Prologue: Trouble in Paradise

Mar 30, 2016 1:36 pm
OOC:
It looks like we're about ready to go. I'm going to go ahead and post the beginning of the prologue here, and you guys can start posting whenever you are ready. :)
The Island Empire of Olera has enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity ever since The Paladin King Roland the First destroyed the regime of Dread Lord Damos and sent his monstrous armies scattering into the wind.

It is now 100 AD (After Damos), and the Freedom Celebration is in full swing in the village of Dewfall. King Roland the Fourth has petitioned the guilds and asked for a party of adventurers to meet an archaeologist by the name of Perrin Highhill and escort him and his discovery from Dewfall to the castle.

The road from Olera Imperia to Dewfall is long, but largely uneventful. Small bands of goblins are seen, but they scatter quickly when they see the size of the merchant caravan and circus that the six of you are travelling with. Four days of travel, and nothing of note happens. Each night, you bed down to the sounds of the bards playing their instruments and the acrobats tumbling across the field.

Upon arrival in Dewfall, it's not hard to tell that the people are in full celebration mode. Children are dancing around Maypoles, there are games and prizes, and there's a steady stream of patrons going in and out of the Busty Bar Maid, a quaint tavern just off of the town square.

The merchants are setting up their wagons, and the performers have begun a retelling of the old war story. We now turn to you, adventurers. What do you do?

I do not believe i have ever visited this town before. As such i need to find the the temple to the gods here. Introduce myself to the local clergy and spend some time in worship.
Mar 30, 2016 1:53 pm
"Great, I thought we'd never get here. I can't remember when I last spent so much time out in the wilderness, camping under the stars. Hate it. Who wants a drink? I might even pay. I'm feeling generous." I take in the sights and colors around me. They're blindingly bright. "Well isn't this... cheery."
Mar 30, 2016 1:56 pm
"I would love to join you in revelry and merry making Xulara, but i must meet the local clergy and put in a bit of time with the devine before hand. Tell me where to meet you in an hour or so and I will be there."

The bold for character speak works great, i am stealing it.

I'm going to wait to move forward from this point until I get a post from everyone, to give DJForeclosure a chance to finish up Maia's backstory and make sure we're all on the same page. I will, however, answer general questions about what the party can see from where they're standing at the village gate.

Thanks for indulging my detail-obsessed oddness. Sorry folks, I'll get there!

Is there an area of the town visibly for religious use?

Roughly how big is this town?

As an immigrant i have never partaken in a "freedom celebration" so any of the local customs i can observe and learn would be interesting to me.

A wide smile spreads across Garn's face at Xulara's offer, "I'll take you up on that offer! Can't turn down free drink!"

It's not a problem! I mainly started this post to get a leg up on things.
Kaosanddoom says:

There is a temple visible past the village square, and it is the tallest building in the village. Very easy to see, but there are no obvious symbols to tell which deity it is dedicated to.
Kaosanddoom says:

Roughly 2000 people in population, but there are easily more than that here currently for the Freedom Celebration. Many people have set up camps and "tent towns" outside of the village walls, to save money on tavern fees.

The story of how Roland the First defeated the Dread Lord Damos, which is being retold Ember Island Players style, may be of interest to you.

Dahlia heads for the large temple. First things first, and then to learn about this local tradition.
Mar 30, 2016 3:13 pm
"Sure Dahlia. Do what you gotta do." I roll my eyes when she leaves and join Garn as we walk towards town. "The damned gods have never done nothing for me. I guess some people just like to hold onto childish fantasies. So, the Busty Barmaid, then?"

"I'm not too picky. Anyone else want to join, follow me!" I make my way towards the tavern, keeping an eye out for the usual pickpockets that target new folks with heavy coinpurses, or anything else of interest.

Turning towards my nearest compatriot I say, "Hey, when are we supposed to meet Highhill? You don't suppose he's in a hurry? We just got here and I'd love to indulge a bit."

Happy that they get to spend some time away from the caravan Hegy takes a few moments to take in the sights. "Busty Bar Maid? Subtle!" she laughs to herself before hearing Xulara's offer to buy drinks. "Busty Bar Maid it is!"
Mar 31, 2016 11:55 am
Toshi sits perched atop one of the caravan wagons, toying with one of his throwing knives. His eyes narrow in the depths of his hood as he listens to Xulara and the others talk, and watches some of them make for a tavern. He is not usually one for merrymaking, especially not in these parts, where racial prejudice runs deep and one of the catfolk is likely to get strung up in a bag and thrown in some river to drown. In his experience, large crowds in a "celebratory" mood can very quickly turn into an ugly mob.

Toshi wishes this Perrin Highhill would arrive already so they can go about their business. It feels strange being tasked with protecting someone instead of making sure they breathed their last. But that is the price of the guise of legitimacy that a membership in the Explorers' Guild affords.

He has been studying his new companions during their travel here, gauging their strengths and weaknesses. It is sometimes hard to puzzle out seasoned adventurers. Xulara in particular intrigues him. The way she moves, the way she carries herself, Toshi can tell she possesses a similar skillset as he. And he is sure that she has puzzled out his true race as well as his true profession. And yet he does not know her from the Guild of Assassins. An outlander then? Best to watch that one closely.

Xulara, Garn, and Hegy all head toward the Busty Barmaid, and find a packed house in full festival mode. There's one table surrounded by men who are arm wrestling each other, where it appears bets are being placed all around. Another group of tables are set up around an impromptu stage, where there sits a minstrel who is playing his lute to the thrilled enjoyment of those around him. Another table has a game of dice being played, and it appears that a few people have left that table grumbling about "damned Halfling luck".

Outside, Toshi and Maia, the merchants that you rode with are getting set up, and no sooner than some of them have parked their wagons than people start lining up to sample their wares. There is also some sort of "fighting ring" set up in the town square, where people can test their skills in the "strongman tournament" with wooden practice weapons.

Dahlia, when you arrive at the temple, you can see that it is a general purpose temple to honor all of the Goodly Deities, and many of the Neutral. Shrines to each deity line the wall, their holy symbol prevalent in the stained glass window above each one. A priest in a fully hooded set of robes walks to each shrine, collecting the offerings there and placing them into different bags. There aren't any parishioners here, as everyone is out enjoying the Freedom Celebration. Saerenrae's shrine is very easy for you to find.
Apr 2, 2016 2:55 pm
Maia looks around, trying best she can to judge her surroundings. After a bit she strides off toward the Busty Barmaid, looking to see if there might be some kind of job board. Perhaps she can use some of her magic or even writing skills to gain a little extra coin before we meet with Highhill.
Apr 2, 2016 11:16 pm
"Halfling luck? My guess is there's a little something more than luck going on over there."

Without leaving the others Hegy will take a look for the lucky halfling. If she can find him from her current position she'll use a 'Detect Magic' cantrip centered on his table, just to see if there's more than just the halfling's luck at work.
Apr 3, 2016 3:58 am
I call over the bustiest barmaid I can find. "Three fine ales for myself and my two friends here!" I point towards the happiest drunks I can find in the place. "Whatever they're having!" I then turn back towards my peoples. "Looks like a fun place they've got here. Either of you looking to make some coin?"

Back at the caravan, Toshi tries to gauge how long it is til nightfall. As is his custom, he will do his exploring then. For the moment he remains perched atop one of the wagons and watches a pair of human children at play. A boy and his sister. Toshi's thoughts turn to his sister, Aki. They had been happy once, until they Aki had stumbled into a human boy and his gang of street urchins. Their parents had always warned them of the cruelty of the 'noble' races, but that was the day Toshi had learned just how cruel humans could truly be. Toshi shakes his head to clear it of painful memories. He stows his throwing knife and brings out a ball of twine. A favorite plaything of Aki's when she was alive. He holds it gently in his hand as he watches the children, sitting very still, as if afraid any movement might dispel the idyll of the moment.
Apr 4, 2016 12:35 pm
The barmaid, a voluptuous red head, smiles at Xulara with a "Sure thing, sugah," and saunters off to fetch the drinks requested. Cheers and jeers can be heard from the arm wrestling table as the "champ" takes down another challenger, and a few groans and sounds of excitement can be heard from the winners and losers at the dice table, as the halfling who appears to be running the show takes note of Xulara and starts wrapping things up with an announcement of "Last throw, gents! Double or nothing, winner takes all!"

Toshi, it was late afternoon/early evening when you all arrived in the town. Early dusk has started to set in, and you judge that in about 30 minutes, night will fully fall...but that doesn't appear to slow down the festivities at all.

Maia, as you walk along the various wagons and tents the merchants have set up, you can see that there's a little bit of everything here. An old human alchemist, long gray beard belted to keep from blowing in the breeze, is selling sparkle-sticks and other novelty alchemical items to the children for coppers, and tending to much larger fireworks when nobody is lined up to sample his wares. Another tent has a large wooden fence with various runes inscribed in it, which encircles the ring where the "Tournament of Arms" is being held. After wandering for about 15 minutes or so, you make your way into the Busty Barmaid in time to see Xulara, Hegy, and Garn have their drinks delivered to them.

Dahlia goes to the shrine of Sarenrae and prays for the health and prosperity of her traveling companions. She prays for the safety of the proprietor of this job. She prays for the strength to vanquish the evil that would threaten the things she has prayed for.

After her prayer she calls over the priestess and places a gold coin in her hand. "For Sarenrae my priestess. And if you would a blessing for me as I go to defend the inhabitants of the world from the evil that lurks therein.?"

Maia wanders over toward Garn as she sees the burly man sit at a table for gauche, uncultured, and possibly profitable competition. She leans down toward Garn as he sits. "Well friend, how confident are you feeling?"
Apr 4, 2016 1:49 pm
Garn flexes the muscles in his massive arms and winks at her, "I feel pretty confident, not many are the men who can best me in a test of strength."
Apr 4, 2016 2:03 pm
Dahlia, the priest in the dark robes turns to you and accepts your coin, placing it within a satchel that has Sarenrae's symbol embroidered upon it. With a chuckle, a melodious male voice comes out from behind the mask.

"I am not a priestess, child, but I will gladly ask my lady Pharasma to guard and protect your fate, that you and yours may find your way home in the end."

He places a gloved hand on your shoulder and mutters a prayer in a language that you don't understand, but sounds beautiful and fills your heart with peace.

Garn and Maia: The current "champ" is a big, burly man who looks the barbarian over and grins.

"Hey hey, Jim. It looks like we might have ourselves a decent challenge this time!"

He looks at Maia with a bit of a drunken leer. "Don't worry, sweetheart, I won't hurt your boyfriend too much...but when we're done, maybe you'd like to spend the rest of the night with a real man. *hic*

The little man who has been riling up the crowd looks up at Garn's face and says "10 Gold gets you a chance at the champ. You win, you put 100 in your purse. You lose, you help buy the champ's drinks for the rest of the Celebration. And he don't drink cheap."
Apr 4, 2016 2:11 pm
Garn reaches into his pouch and slaps 10 gold coins onto the table, "Done! Now let's see what you've got!"
Apr 4, 2016 2:15 pm
Maia stares back at Jim with as much withering contempt and disgust as she can muster. She then turns back to Garn and whispers low.

"I'll put up 5 Gold if you're willing to part with 25 of the winnings. Plus, I can give you some tips without him knowing, so perhaps I can give you a weakness on which you can lean."
Apr 4, 2016 2:17 pm
Garn waves the offer away, "Nah, I got this covered, and you can have half the gold when I win. I'm just here for the challenge."
Apr 4, 2016 2:19 pm
Maia moves away, satisfied. That's better than she'd hoped.

"If you insist on charity, I won't dissuade you." She gives a rare smile. "Just make sure you take him down then. I don't like the bile that escapes his face."
Apr 4, 2016 2:24 pm
Garn, as soon as you slap the gold on the table, the champ's drunken leer turns to determination as he sets his arm on the table. You grasp his hand, and the little man standing beside him pats him on the shoulder and starts calling for bets.

"Alright folks, place your bets. 1 to 10 odds on the challenger here, place your bets!"

Bets start flying, with most of the people betting on the champ, and only one or two betting on Garn.

I smile pleasantly at the barmaid and drink with a practiced mirth as I watch my companions leave. It's yet another reminder that, in the end, I'll always be alone. I should be used to it by now.

The Halfling catches me eye, and I accept it for the invitation it is. What do I have to lose, really? I head over to the table, sloshing my drink as I do. "Double or nothing, you say? What's the wager?"

With the sun waning in the west, Toshi checks his gear and, leaping lightly from the top of the wagon, begins his exploration of Dewfall. He keeps to the shadows and out of the way corners until he can gain the rooftops. This is his time and his world. There is a layer of the world that lies deep beneath the surface. A layer that most refuse to see because it terrifies them. This layer is where Toshi, "the bright one," becomes Kage, "shadow."

Kage prowls the rooftops, a shadow among shadows. Every settlement has a different pulse, breathes differently. Kage takes a circuitous route, always keeping to the rooftops, that swings out towards the temple where he knows Dahlia went, then circles around to the town center before heading in the direction of the Busty Barmaid.

I fish out 20 gold and throw 'em on the table. "Alright, let's see em. High and odd."
Apr 4, 2016 3:35 pm
After Xulara places her bet at the dice table, the halfling slams the the cup on the table, and waits for others to declare their bets. Two more men bet High and Odd with Xulara, a couple High and Even, two bet Low and Odd, with one Low and Even.

"I like the way you think, sir. Low and even!" the halfling exclaims. With a dramatic flourish, he pulls the cup up to reveal: snake eyes.

As he collects the dice and coin, the halfling says with a smile: "Well, there you have it folks! Low and Even. Sir, you and I will split the winnings, you'll take 90, and I'll take 90. Everyone else, your drinks are on me, and it's been a pleasure!"

Before Xulara gets up and leaves, the Halfling waves for her attention. "'Scuse me, miss...but as soon as your big friend over there is done playing around, could you move your drinks over to my table? We have business to discuss."

Garn, you and Champ lock arms, and as soon as Jim gives you the go ahead, you snap into action, arm tightening, muscles bulging...and neither arm moving an inch. The champ's veins bulge slightly on his forehead, and his look of determination shifts to one of surprise and then anger.

The champ and Jim leave in a hurry, after paying out their bets and giving Garn his well earned 100 GP...deep in an argument about some sort of magic.

"Waiting, yes. Worried, no. I've just been passing my time, visiting with old friends. I don't think there will be any trouble with this trip to the capital, but I've been wrong before, and I'd like the extra help getting my discovery back to the king. I left it at the Temple for now...the head priest there is an old friend, and better equipped to deal with unknown magic. I'll explain everything once your companions get done with their little game over there.

Perrin, the halfling, then waves in Hegy's direction, indicating she should join the rogue and halfling at the table...right as an explosion from outside shatters the windows and fills the room with dust and debris.

Dahlia, at this point, you've exited the temple, feeling pretty good about how things have gone down this evening. Dahlia quickly mounts her steed and scans the area for danger. If there is any she will deal with it first, if not she will rush to rejoin her party at the tavern.

Also not that it matters but my reflex should have been 19 not a 17, i forgot the blessing bonus.

OOC:
In desperate interest of Maia's self preservation, I don't suppose any of that damage was Acid, Cold, or Electricity was it? :D
Apr 5, 2016 2:25 pm
As he vaults over to an adjacent rooftop Toshi notices Dahlia riding away but his attention is focused on the bomb-tossing figures. What sort of creatures are they? Do they seem to be headed in a particular direction? Is there a pattern to the mayhem or is it random? He tries to gauge whether any of them would be within range of his crossbow. Keeping to the rooftops he follows the attackers if there is a general unified direction. Otherwise he beats a path to the Busty Barmaid.
Apr 5, 2016 5:08 pm
There doesn't seem to be any unified direction that Toshi can discern...right now, they just seem to be running around causing general mayhem.

Both Toshi and Dahlia make it to the tavern in time to unite with their friends, though it takes up the entire round to do so. Dahlia sees through the window that a halfling is busy running to each party member, checking them over and helping them up. When Dahlia arrives at the tavern door, the Halfling looks up at her and yells: "Listen. The artifact is in the temple. You guys go there, tell Father Weiryn that Perrin sent you. I'll do what I can to help the villagers." And then he goes about helping the other tavern patrons to their feet, directing them to the back door.

At the moment, there is just general chaos and a fire starting in the tavern itself. No enemies are in sight, nor does anyone make an attempt on any party member.

Begin Round 2. Once everyone has declared their actions, I will post a round synopsis with the NPC's actions (if any) and move on to the next round. All party members have been helped to their feet.
OOC:
And nope. Slashing, bludgeoning, and fire...no cold, acid, or electricity.

I stride towards the exit. Before I make my way to he temple I whistle- two high-pitched notes (one long, one short). I'm sure Toshi's skulking about the rooftops somewhere; hopefully he'll hear. Dahlia's probably feeding some orphans or polishing the halo on her head. We'll have to find her later. In any case, I follow Garn and watch his back. I don't like surprises.

Maia's going to get out of the burning tavern, coughing and blinking, then she's going to call Istariel to her side for help.
OOC:
Going to move out of the tavern, then use the Summon Monster II class ability to call out my Eidolon. If I can't do both, then running out of the burning tavern will suffice. Shaking her head and she pulls herself up to a seated position Hegy quickly thanks the halfling for his help. "Name's Hegy" she coughs as the dust rips into her throat. Getting to her feet she quickly tries to get a feel for the situation when she see Garn run towards the exit with Xulara close behind. "Hey..." *cough* "wait for" *gasp* "Hegy!!" she manages to spit out wondering why she's referring to herself in the third person.

Without wasting another moment she high tails it out of tavern, Denevér flapping behind her.

Toshi, ever the watchful eye, watches everyone rush off. "The temple?! I was just there!" he thinks to himself, annoyed. He glances quickly at the halfling. So it seems his companions have found Perrin Highhill, or Highhill has found them. The mission is to escort this person and his artifact back to Olera. Why is everyone rushing off to recover this unknown artifact without sparing a thought for the other half of the mission - that of protecting the archaeologist? Ever the doubter, Toshi wonders further, what do we really know about this Highhill? For all we know he could be behind this mayhem. His oh-so-noble staying behind to 'help' might be nothing but a clever ruse. Toshi decides to stay behind and follow Perrin. If the halfling is on the level then he'll need someone watching his back. Otherwise, well...

It is autumn. Toshi and his sister Aki play among the flurries of amber leaves. The world is golden. Laughing, Aki strays too far and stumbles into the path of a gang of human boys. Toshi, remembering their parents' stern warnings against crossing paths with humans, fears the worst, and bares his claws in anticipation. But the boys help Aki up and invite the siblings to join them at play. "We love cats! You two are good at climbing, right? Come on, we'll show you our secret hideout - you can join our gang!" Toshi has never had friends, let alone a gang. Naive and stupid, he agrees. And takes Aki, sweet Aki, along for the adventure. The humans take them to the docks - the hideout protects their favorite fishing spot, they said. The siblings, stern warnings forgotten, are so happy! Toshi is skipping stones across the river with Kite, the gang leader, when a sack is pulled roughly over his head. He can hear Aki's muffled mewling close by. Toshi lashes out with his claws, and connects. There is loud cursing from the victim, laughing from the rest of the boys. A splash, as something, probably the sack containing Aki, is tossed in the water. Kicks and punches. Screaming as Toshi's claws find another boy's face. Weightlessness, and another splash, and he is fighting for his life in the icy water...

The crash of a nearby structure collapsing brings Toshi back to the here and now. All his companions are gone. Where has Perrin gone? There! Toshi makes to shadow the halfling, wondering where destiny will lead him this night.
Apr 6, 2016 1:10 pm
Hegy, you run out after Garn and the others, and see Dahlia leaned out over her horse, hand outstretched to pull you up and on. When you grab her hand, you can feel a rush of divine energy surge through your body, healing you for 3 HP.

Garn, Maia, Xulara, Dahlia, and Hegy: you make it to the temple in time to see shadowy figures rush into the now busted down door. Two small, well armored kobolds stand between you and the door, white scales gleaming in the firelight, and they ready their weapons and shields when Garn comes into view.

Toshi: You've started to run out of roof, so you take to the streets, keeping to the shadows and doing your best to keep the halfling in sight. At one point, you actually lose him...and then you hear the high pitched scream of a frightened child, not far off. Rounding the corner, you see Perrin standing between some women and children and 4 kobolds, with brilliant green, blue, white, and red scales. The white advances on the lone halfling, who draws and throws two daggers at the creature, only to have them deflected off its armor and shield. A fifth kobold appears from the shadows to the side, with dark black scales, and drives a dagger deep into Perrin's back. He is badly wounded, but still standing.

End round 2. Begin Round 3. Post your declared actions, with rolls for attacks and damage, and resolutions will follow once all declarations are made.
OOC:
YAY! YOU SPLIT THE PARTY!

Um...I mean...don't you know you never split the party? ^_^

"Dismount Hegy, i have Kobolds to slay."

Dahlia Helps Hegy off the horse.

"Come Arten, fly like the wind and help me smite these creatures"

Locking her lance into place Dahlia performs a ride by attack. Full charge at the closest Kobold. Using any remaining distance to put space between herself and the kobold should another attack be necessary.

OOC using ride by attack feat with lance. Adding up the modifiers here so if any mistakes are made they can be called out.

+1 for being mounted against and unmounted creature.
+2 for the charge.
Dealing double damage for charging with lance while mounted.

So that gives me a total of +8 (3 base, 2 strength, 2 charge, 1 mounted against unmounted) to hit and 2d8+4 damage

Maia stands back from the fray, waiting for Istariel to shake off his rude awakening.

"I am so sorry to call you so suddenly, but I cannot help others without you."

Putting a hand on his back, Maia begins chanting softly but distinctly, drawing golden runes on his back with her finger. The runes grow into the image of four golden shields, each with the angelic face of an Aspect of the Cardinal Directions. After a brief and bright shine, the shields disappear, but their protection remains.
OOC:
Maia is casting Mage Armor on Istariel, granting him 20 AC. This is 1/4 1st level spells she can cast today. Also, does Istariel need an Initiative roll or should he just use mine?

Hegy, your shot bounces off of a shield as Maia chants a brief incantation, while her eidolon shakes off his disorientation. Dahlia charges in on her mount, but her lance goes wide off the mark...

The kobold's cry out in a raspy language as Dahlia rides by, and the one closest to her lashes out with his blade but doesn't connect.

The second starts to come forward, but is interrupted when Garn charges forward, and meets the charge head on.

Dahlia wheels Arten round and prepares for a second advance.

"Look to me you servant of evil. Know that i am the tool of your destruction."

Feeling the divine blessing and the power of Sarenrae course through her, Dahlia lines up another attack intent on ending this evil farce. Laying heels to Arten this four legged smiting machine sets course for the Kobold. With a great thunderous rumble from the hooves of an armored heavy war horse, the metallic clangs of heavy armor jostling in the rhythmic strides of a full gallop, and a warriors cry to make even the most heralded of ancestors proud, Dahlia rides back into the fray. You didn't hit, but that's OK. I made the adjustments. You get a +6 to hit and a +3 to claw damage.
Maia feels her wounds start to close as the Celestial Healing spell takes effect (heal 1 HP). Istariel dances up next to Garn and slams his hand into the kobold's side...and it is like hitting a wall. The kobold grunts and takes the hit with no effect.

Garn takes advantage of the kobold's distraction, and lays in a mighty swing...cutting deep into the lamellar armor and landing a severe wound. That kobold then turns to Garn and lashes out with his own sword, screaming something in that odd language again as he connects with his blade.

Hegy, this time your bolt goes just shy of the mark, missing the kobold completely as he ducks under Dahlia's charge again. He screams out something very similar to the first one as he lashes out with his blade at Dahlia's horse, but misses as they ride by.
OOC:
