Prologue: Trouble in Paradise

With the sun waning in the west, Toshi checks his gear and, leaping lightly from the top of the wagon, begins his exploration of Dewfall. He keeps to the shadows and out of the way corners until he can gain the rooftops. This is his time and his world. There is a layer of the world that lies deep beneath the surface. A layer that most refuse to see because it terrifies them. This layer is where Toshi, "the bright one," becomes Kage, "shadow."

Kage prowls the rooftops, a shadow among shadows. Every settlement has a different pulse, breathes differently. Kage takes a circuitous route, always keeping to the rooftops, that swings out towards the temple where he knows Dahlia went, then circles around to the town center before heading in the direction of the Busty Barmaid.

Toshi, your route around the city gives you plenty of time to explore, but it's takes you about 45 minutes and full dark has arrived by the time you get to the temple.
OOC:
Toshi, roll Perception...you and Dahlia are on "pause" for the moment, while I finish out the scene that's going on in the Barmaid.

I fish out 20 gold and throw 'em on the table. "Alright, let's see em. High and odd."
Apr 4, 2016 3:35 pm
After Xulara places her bet at the dice table, the halfling slams the the cup on the table, and waits for others to declare their bets. Two more men bet High and Odd with Xulara, a couple High and Even, two bet Low and Odd, with one Low and Even.

"I like the way you think, sir. Low and even!" the halfling exclaims. With a dramatic flourish, he pulls the cup up to reveal: snake eyes.

As he collects the dice and coin, the halfling says with a smile: "Well, there you have it folks! Low and Even. Sir, you and I will split the winnings, you'll take 90, and I'll take 90. Everyone else, your drinks are on me, and it's been a pleasure!"

Before Xulara gets up and leaves, the Halfling waves for her attention. "'Scuse me, miss...but as soon as your big friend over there is done playing around, could you move your drinks over to my table? We have business to discuss."

Garn, you and Champ lock arms, and as soon as Jim gives you the go ahead, you snap into action, arm tightening, muscles bulging...and neither arm moving an inch. The champ's veins bulge slightly on his forehead, and his look of determination shifts to one of surprise and then anger.
OOC:
Strength check number 2 from Garn.
Apr 4, 2016 3:42 pm
"I'm sorry my friend, but I don't discuss business on an empty stomach." I give him a wink, take my drink and make to leave.

Garn is a bit surprised by the man's strength, but pushes forward with all of his might.

"Not even Guild business? I guess I was mistaken, then. There's only so many half-elves that are travelling with such an assortment, even if a couple are missing."

The Halfling calls over the barmaid that served you earlier, and starts ordering up a huge meal, more than one halfling could ever eat, and asks for seven place settings with a wink in Xulara's direction.
Apr 4, 2016 4:25 pm
I place a drink order with the barmaid before turning my full attention back to the Halfling. "Is that so? I wouldn't know. But I guess I could spare a moment if only to alleviate my boredom. What do you call yourself, Halfling?"

"Oh, I don't know about all that...your large friend there tends to stand out a bit."

Garn, you push forward, and slowly...oh so slowly, his arm starts to go down. It takes every bit of your considerable might, but you finally manage to make his knuckles touch the table. Jim looks at you, eyes wide, and stammers "We...we have a winner...um...collect y-y-your winnings, sir..." as the Champ rubs his sore arm, rage in his eyes.

I shrug. "True. Some of us like to stand out. Others like to stick to the shadows. There are all sorts. Are you telling me you've been waiting for us to get here? Should I be worried?" I lean back lazily in my chair and idly wonder when my remaining traveling companions will be joining us.
Apr 4, 2016 6:11 pm
Garn stands up with a grin on his face and holds his hand out for a friendly shake, "Well fought, my friend! I haven't had an opponent so tough in a long time."
Apr 4, 2016 6:24 pm
Yeah, yeah...take your money and go. AND YOU! You said I wouldn't lose!

The champ and Jim leave in a hurry, after paying out their bets and giving Garn his well earned 100 GP...deep in an argument about some sort of magic.

"Waiting, yes. Worried, no. I've just been passing my time, visiting with old friends. I don't think there will be any trouble with this trip to the capital, but I've been wrong before, and I'd like the extra help getting my discovery back to the king. I left it at the Temple for now...the head priest there is an old friend, and better equipped to deal with unknown magic. I'll explain everything once your companions get done with their little game over there.

Perrin, the halfling, then waves in Hegy's direction, indicating she should join the rogue and halfling at the table...right as an explosion from outside shatters the windows and fills the room with dust and debris.

Dahlia, at this point, you've exited the temple, feeling pretty good about how things have gone down this evening. Night has fallen, and you are due back at the tavern to meet your friends and possibly this Perrin Highhill. However, before you get very far, an explosion rocks the town, and a shockwave hits your body, knocking you from your feet.

Toshi thanks his feline luck that he spotted the explosive device before it detonated, or he might have lost his footing on the temple roof. He whips his gaze back to where he had noticed movement in the trees, trying to pierce the darkness with his cat eyes.

In either case dahlia wheels around to face the incoming danger.

You were mounted as you were walking out of the temple? Because that's when this happened...right after you walked out of the temple.
