Charge me for a riding horse as well. As for the short sword, Angel left it inside when he picked up the longsword. He probably won't go back for it.Nov 9, 2020 4:18 am

Wondering if we should wait for DM to double check the inn. Seems like something might be happening there with Eltrezar!

OOC:
yep that’s why I’m holding my post. But @DM yeah the lance will stay with the horse. Warhammer across Coulsons back under his shield, sword at his hipNov 10, 2020 12:13 am
OOC:
Yeah, for sure. I'm going to striketrhu and retcon everything posted regarding when you return to the inn because some crazy is going down at the inn right now. I would have posted today but work got super hectic (I'm maintenance director for a hotel and corporate is coming to inspect our building) so I had to put on my big-boy pants and actually do my job all day in preparation for our quarterly inspection instead of playing D&D. Basically the Inn is on fire and Eltrezar is whapping off Magic Missiles and things have gone mad while you were shopping, which you'll have noticed as you head back across the river, but I'm on my phone in a bar right now, so as soon as I get to my computer I'll make a post for what you all see.

ooc: In the meantime, I'll catch up.
Kelric nods at Sister Alice and says, Thank you, I vow to pay you back for him. Stroking the mane of the horse he adds, This is a fine horse, he will do well.
Turning to the stable boy Does he have a name? gesturing towards the horse. Upon hearing the answer, he takes the leads and begins following the rest.

Sister Alice nods and acknowledgment of Kelric's gratitude and waves off the notion of repayment.
The horse is a contribution to the service of righteousness. Fight the good fight and consider our account settled.
When Kelric inquires about the horses name, Alice reminds him,
The groom told us they don't name the animals here.

As they canter along the road back towards the inn, Coulson turns in his saddle, not used to being quite so high, and tells Kelric and Sister Alice "I’ve named my ‘orse Deliverer. Cos it’ll deliver me to battle"

A fine name for a noble steed. I'll call mine "Zephyr" as in the wind that blows from the north.
Alice had never owned a horse before, hadn't much needed one truth be told. She didn't know much about their care but sitting so high off the ground she couldn't deny the appeal.
Maybe it was the last remnants of the sunset or maybe it was the town lamp lights being set, but in the distance Sister Alice could swear she saw the faint glow of a fire...

"Ooh, a name for the horse. Now that's a tough one. Since you're mostly black big fella I'm gonna call you PANTHER." Angel pats the horse on the neck and looks up at Sister Alice as if to get her approval. He notices her gaze and turns his head to follow it. "Is that coming form the Inn?"

Fine name... Alice replies distractedly without taking her gaze from the horizon.
Invokes a powerful... Yes I think it is coming from the inn! Quickly now men!
Alice spurs her horse to a gallop and tears off toward the glow.

Cloppy... no,
Stompy... no,
Silver... no,
Timber...
Ginny had been deep in thought, running her hands through the pony’s mane, and playing with names in her mind.
Sister Alice’s "Quickly men" snaps her to attention. She looks around and sees an orange glow some ways away. Others in the street have turned their attention there as well, as Alice and the others dart off.
Whats that smell?! Oh! Oh! Here we go! The quest!
Let’s go Timber!
Gilly is a mix of excitement and nerves. She trots behind the others as competently and as quickly as she can manage!

As the party leaves the trading post satisfied with their mounts and new equipment they begins discussing at length the naming of their animals, when they are brought out of their conversation by shouts of men and women at the inn. Looking up they see flames licking away from a fire in the stables and a column of black smoke rises into the air. For the moment the fire appears to be small, but is quickly growing to one of medium size, at which point baling water on it from the well may prove difficult.
As you rush to investigate and maybe be of service in putting it out you notice an even more curious thing. The man with the pointed hat that many of you saw visiting the druid of the grove points a finger and speaks an arcane incantation and an arrow of light streaks from his hand and races across the open way striking a man on horseback. The man falls off his mount with a heavy and graceless crunch and lies unmoving on the road heading east out of town. The fallen man's companion, also mounted on horseback, wheels his animal around and draws a crossbow muttering some obscenity you're probably the better for not hearing clearly. He takes a moment to inspect the fallen man, seems to consider for a moment, and decides that one old man shouldn't be too much of a danger against his crossbow, magic arrows or not.

Round 1 begins! Turn order is as follows:
-->1. Alice (7)
2. Kelric and Man#2 (6)
3. Angel and Gilly (4)
4. Coulson and Eltrezar (2)
Coulson is the only one still injured, having 2HP at the moment.

I didn't drag down an A-Z/number-on-the-sides key for this encounter, as I don't really think this small encounter is going to be all that tactical. If you want to just sort of describe any movement you make I think we can wing it without too much issue. As it stands, Eltrezar is 125ft from the man with a crossbow, and the others are about 85ft from the crossbowman for the purposes of ranged combat, but because the blacksmith's property is surrounded by a wooden post fence, it would take about 95ft of movement to get in melee range. The fence is pretty much just a couple of wooden posts fitted in uprights every ten feet or so, though, and shouldn't cause much of an obstruction to fire through, so I wouldn't say anyone will benefit from cover or anything like that. The man is clearly intent on attacking Eltrezar and hasn't so much as noticed the others.Round 1 begins! Turn order is as follows:

Can we tell from this distance if the mounted men (man) looks like the guys that molested the tavern girl?Nov 12, 2020 4:50 am
OOC:
Yes, it is definitely one of the men that was tossed out of the tavern at the crossbow point.Nov 12, 2020 5:25 am
Those were the men that groped the barman's daughter!
Alice kicks at her horses flank and charges toward the man with the crossbow, pulling the strap of her sling from her belt as she goes.
Fire! Fire! Fire at the inn! she yells at the top of her lungs.
Her steed just rounds the corner of the blacksmiths fence when quick as a thought she pulls a river stone from her belt pouch, nocks it in the cradle of the sling, and with an overhead twirl whips it at the bowman's head...

Oh, interesting!... Okay so this is actually a good opportunity to mention rules for mounted combat since you guys bought animals.
So be advised that if you’re riding an animal, you’ll suffer a -4 penalty to ranged missile attacks. Spellcasters can’t cast at all because they need a degree of stability to cast their spells.
On the other hand, any time you use missile weapons you’ll notice you have three ranges: short, medium, and long. If you’re at short range, you get a +1 to your attacks, and if you’re at long range you have a -1 to your attacks.

In this case, Alice raced her horse forward 80ft and released her sling bullet at a target still 20ft away. @dominion451 rolled a 16 after Alice’s ranged modifier, -4 for an unstable surface makes it a 12, +1 for being short range makes it a 13 17.

Alice races forward on her newly purchased mount, drawing sling and stone. As she closes in on the crossbowman she releases her bullet. For a moment, there’s a sense of uncertainty, as the horse beneath her jostles and bumps, but the stone sails through the air, and as it closes the twenty foot distance between herself and her target she knows her aim was true.
The stone strikes the man in the side of the head, and upon smashing his temple, the crossbowman tumbles sideways off his mount, falling to a crumpled pile on the dirt beside his companion. Neither of the men move, and it immediately becomes apparent that both are dead.

Thank you Coulson, My Lord favors me this day!
Alice dismounts her steed and approaches the two bodies where she checks to see that they are truly dead. She speaks the words of last rites offered by her order to the departed and makes the sign of Cuthbert.
