Part 2: Welcome to Hommlet

Sister Alice hears a groan from the other side of the door, then some cursing, creaking, more cursing, until finally the door is opened, and standing before her is a bleary eyed, beaten up dwarf in armour, who proceeds to drag himself downstairs towards food and morning ale
Nov 20, 2020 3:45 pm
Good man Coulson, some pipe and ale will fix you right up.

Alice follows the dwarf out to the common room and waits while he finishes his meal. Alice is surprised by the wizard's kind words regarding the church, she had thought him a follower of the aforementioned druid that apparently lived in the area.

Of course Sir Eltrezar, I'm sure we will be at the church for an hour or two and would be happy to have your company. It's true what you say, the Church of Cuthbert takes a very practical approach to it's ministrations. Best to reach the masses from a place of simple understanding.

Once done the pair head off toward the Church of Saint Cuthbert and petition the priests there to put their powers of healing to use.

"Eh... should we bring him? Only I don’t know if he’ll be much help on a quest."

Gilly points to the intoxicated Elmo, propped up on the bar. She hurriedly gathers her equipment from the table, bows to the innkeeper’s wife, and prepares to follow out the door, when she spots Angel staying behind. Realizing that they won’t be leaving any time soon, she sits down with him and waits.

Sister Alice glances toward Elmo at the halfling's mention and answers Gilly in hushed tones.

After we finish with our business in town we can come back for Mr Elmo should he still be here, though I share your skepticism Gilly.

"I'll keep an eye on him since I'll be staying here watching out for the establishment. And making sure our lock box is secure.
OOC:
Don't recall what the final decision was regarding our horde of coin but I wanted to err on the side of caution.

OOC:
@Aldrusian: I believe the consensus was to purchase horses to carry the weight.
@dominion451 and TheFoxofFinch:
The earliest of risers arrived in the common area at around 6am, and by 8am even Coulson is up and fed and ready to visit the Church of St. Cuthbert. The walk is short but refreshing, and after arriving at the church and being greeted once again by the priest Calmert, who learns of Coulson's needs, Alice and her dwarven companion are brought to the Audience Chamber where Alice first visited.
Again, Calmert invites you to have a seat while he makes some preparations, and ignoring the comfortable padded chairs near the fireplace, gestures to the hard wooden benches along the wall. He then walks out of the door leading to the church processional, but not before turning and saying, "I'll only be but a minute," gesturing silently but pointedly at the poorbox fastened near the artifacts table.

@charles.c.crowley:
Eltrezar heads over to Brother Smythe's shop across the street, where he hears the banging of hammer on iron coming from the shed. As the wizard arrives Smythe looks up and sets his work on a horseshoe down.
"Good morning traveler; I trust your sleep at th' inn was well! To what do I owe the honor o' your visit this morn'?"

@everyone else:
Deciding to remain at the Wench while your companions finish their errands, you watch for about ten minutes while Elmo wraps up a story he's been sharing with Glenda while she works. It's a rather drawn out tale about a pig he once had that his brother Otis tried to feed but the pig was determined to have a nip at Otis's rear end instead. The story is altogether a bland tale, with too many details, that only an inebriated man could tell so long-windedly or find as much humor in as Elmo seems to.
After wrapping up his tale, to Glenda's polite amusement, he shoves away from the bar and saunters slowly over to you all.
"Unless me prying ears deceive me, I believe I over'eard you sayin' we was fixin' to 'ead out as soon as your friends return. Perhaps now would be a good time to 'ead 'ome an' fetch me horse, and the axe an' armor your friend Lady Aleesa purchased for me yesterday, no? I shall be back in 'alf an hour..."
With that, he nods smartly and turns out the door of the inn, clumsily bumping a table with his hip on the way out.

"Not sure I trust him to return. Can someone follow him at a discrete distance and make sure he doesn't wander of somewhere else?" If no one volunteers, Angel will get up grumbling and saunter out the door to do it himself.

OOC:
Good call Angel. As for the coin, my decision at least was to keep it at the inn in the lock box though I would have taken it with me to the church expecting to have to pay for healing.
Nov 20, 2020 10:47 pm
Alice and Coulson enter the church and thank Calmert for seeing them. At the Brother's insistence, Alice drops another twenty gold pieces into the poor box and takes a seat on the wooden bench as indicated.
Nov 20, 2020 11:10 pm
OOC:
@Aldrusian: Not ignoring you, just giving others a chance to volunteer first. Otherwise I'll post for Angel.

@dominion451: Noted that Alice is using the lockbox for the time being. Just let me know how much you want to deposit.
@dominion451 and TheFoxofFinch:
Almost as soon as Alice is seated the door opens and Calmert returns. "Well then, thank you for your patience. Now let's see about this man's wounds." He looks Coulson over for a moment, inspecting the dwarf's injuries. As he does this he speaks to Alice. "As a cleric following the ways of our benefactor Saint Cuthbert, I am going to assume you are not yet an adept, else you would have prepared this spell yourself overnight? Maybe I am wrong and being a bit presumptuous. In any case, I am happy to let you watch me if this is not a skill you've mastered yet. A lesson through observation, if you will. Please pray with me."
Without looking to see if Alice is practicing the necessary prayers or not, Calmert closes his eyes, recites the proper prayers for Cure Light Wounds, and lays his hands on Coulson's shoulders. Coulson feels a pleasant warmth spread through him, focusing on the injuries under his armpit and ribs. When Calmert opens his eyes, the dwarf feels considerably better.
OOC:
Calmert is healed for 6HP, which I believe brings him to full health.

That is correct Brother, I am only an initiate though I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from you.

Alice recites the prayers as led by Calmert and feels the thrill of the ritual as Coulson's wounds miraculously heal.

Thank you Brother Calmert, your gifts are quite compelling.

Alice deposits another twenty gold coins in the poor box and asks to make her daily atonements in the chapel while she waits for Eltrezar.

Coulson, though I would suggest you spend some time in prayer considering the blessing you have received I do understand if there is other business to which you must attend. I will stay a while and pray while I wait for the wizard.

Gilly turns to Angel, eyes wide and excited at the prospect of some mischief.

"Why don’t we both follow him? I’m pretty sneaky! But...

I’m not sure I like that guy all that much. And he’s got a big axe and big armor and I've got... well... this."

She handles her short sword.

"I’ve just got a bad feeling... Halfling’s eh... inn tuition."
OOC:
Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree here

"Good morning sir, I come to you seeking a brace of daggers to protect me along a task that I have agreed to undertake, one that promises to be quite dangerous. As a scholar of arcane mysteries, violence is not my specialty... but I have been known to throw a knife with some accuracy in my time. How much per? I would very much like two or three of your finest."
Nov 21, 2020 4:52 am
@charles.c.cowley:
"Hmm... Fortune be on both our sides this morning; your timing has served us well. I have five of these, which I was going to deliver today to the Trading Post. Three gold per dagger. More than I'd get from Rannos and Gremag, but less than you'd pay there." He shows you five daggers recently forged, well made but plain. It's evident that they were designed for utility and function first.
After making your purchases, Brother Smythe nods and thanks you then says, "By the way, before you and your companions set out today, assumin' you're still intent on searchin' for the rest o' th' men that caused trouble at th' inn yesterday, I think you should swing by 'ere. I've gleaned some information yeh'll find plenty useful, I believe, though it might be easiest to explain it once while all your ears are present."
OOC:
Just let me know how many daggers Eltrezar purchases.
@Aldrusian and @KCC69:
Angel and Gilly leave the inn a short time after Elmo does. Creeping and using buildings and other objects for cover they watch as the man walks south, occasionally staggering, the line he draws not altogether straight, but he does go directly to the home Angel met him at yesterday. He enters the home and is inside for about five or ten minutes before exiting out a back door and retrieving a horse from the modest yard in back. Another ten minutes or so are spent getting the horse's tack fastened. After getting his mount ready Gilly and Angel watch as he puts foot in the stirrup and steps up, swinging his leg over the saddle, and tips over the other side, nearly falling flat before grabbing the saddle horn. Thinking better of riding, he gets back down and grabs the horse's reins, deciding to walk back to the inn on foot.
After arriving at the inn, astoundingly pretty close to a half hour after leaving, he stables his horse and staggers back inside.

Where has Kelric (Shadowace) been this whole time? Haven't seen him this morning.
Angel sneaks around back and comes in the back door giving a good sigh and hitching up his pants as he enters the common room. "Ah, there he is. And right on time too. Sister Alice will be along shortly. Let's make sure we're ready to go after some bad guys the moment she shows up."

OOC:
Yeah we seem to have trouble keeping elves around lol. Just need Eltrezar to hook up at the church since he's expecting to meet us there...
Nov 21, 2020 2:49 pm
Looking over the knives, Eltrezar tests out the weight and edge on each. With a satisfied grunt, "These will do nicely. And for that price, I would be happy to purchase all three. You never know when one will come in handy, and knives like this have a tendency to go missing. The more the merrier! And with this purchase, I shall go about my business and return with my new companions. Until then, good ser."

After departing the smithy, Eltrezar heads to where he believes the chapel to be. He finds it eventually, along with Sister Alice and Coulson still inside. Looking around, he sees the practicality common to the centers of worship for The Cudgel. "Ah, I'm glad to find the two of you still here. I have just finished my business at the smithy, though Brother Smythe has requested our presence for some information. It would seem that he would like to speak with the group before we depart on our task. Coulson, you look much better, though it is not common to see a Dwarf without recent wounds."

Yeah I was looking at that last night too. I thought Kelric was down in the common room having breakfast, but it looks like Shadowace hasn't posted in about four days. As far as the PCs would be concerned, they technically didn't even see him turn in for the night. Possibly Shadowace has something going on keeping them busy irl. As soon as the PCs set out in search of the men from the tavern I'm going to lock this thread and start Part 3. You guys are just about wrapped up with this one I think, so we'll wait and see if Shadowace checks in before then. Otherwise, I suppose you'll have to set out without Kelric.
@Altrusian:
As Angel enters the inn and greet him Elmo, again standing at the bar with a horn of ale in hand raises it in a gesture of "cheers" and says, "Lookin' forward to it, friend."

@charles.c.cowley, @dominion451, and @TheFoxofFinch:
Eltrezar arrives at the Inn and informs Sister Alice and Coulson that Brother Smythe has requested that the arty stop by the shop and visit him before they set out in search of the men. It seems that he has discovered some information that should prove valuable to you.
Nov 22, 2020 12:01 am
OOC:
I had hoped to catch Elmo before he ordered another ale.
"We need to keep our heads clear or we'll risk losing them. I think it's time to put down the ale horn and see if Sister Alice, Coulson and Eltrezar are nearby." Angel signals to Gilly to help him to get Elmo out the door without an ale horn in his fist.

Sorry all work was a rough one this week and distance learning with the little ones is not going all to well.
Finishing his breakfast, Kelric rejoins the group. That was a fine meal he says. His pack is on, bow slung over his shoulder, and ready for adventure.
