Part 2: Welcome to Hommlet

The captain seems wholly disinterested with the line of conversation, going so far as to appear to have not heard it at all.
Oct 31, 2020 7:54 pm
Alice waits for Coulson to finish before she speaks to Elmo.

Right you are Mr Coulson, but if this young lad is willing to stake his safety for ours then I will personally fund his kit.

She turns to the Captain and then to Elmo,

That's assuming such a thing is permissible by your father.
Oct 31, 2020 10:07 pm
The captain doesn't even look up. He brushes away the question with a hand wave and says to Alice, "Elmo is his own man. He serves as Master-at-Arms of the militia, and if I had any say in what he does with his spare time he wouldn't be spending every waking moment carousing in my sergeant's tavern.
"If he wishes to accompany you, and you're willing to pay his fees, he can do what he likes. However, the militia is funded by taxation of the village's citizens and by rights will not be supporting this endeavor financially or through the provision of gear. Not until the village council deems it acceptable."

Alice and the others watching this could easily get the impression that the captain and his son, who happens to also be the Master-at-Arms, have a strained relationship. The captain seems a fair but straight-laced man, and the son seems to have a history of biding too much time carousing at the tavern. As innkeeper and owner of the tavern in question, and also sergeant of the militia, Ostler seems somewhat uncomfortable with this entire dynamic and looks as though he'd rather be anywhere than in this room.

Very well sir, I'll waste no more of your time. Come Elmo, let us see if the smith has anything in your size.

Assuming there is no more banter to be had, Sister Alice takes her leave and makes toward the blacksmith to find provisions for her new man at arms.

Feeling quite burdened by the wealth on her back, Alice thinks it high time she bought a mule. Though stubborn creatures, they more than made up for a lack of personality with strength of spine.

@Aldrusian, Shadowace, and dominion451:
With your business of introducing yourself to the militia captain concluded, Alice leaves with Elmo slowly gaiting alongside her. The other companions follow and you arrive at what would be best described as the town center again, with the inn on the west side, the blacksmith at the northeast, and to the southeast, a copse of trees and a large, well-manicured lawn.

Some of you may notice as you arrive that a small halfling girl is entering the inn, possibly remarkable only in that up until now, the only demihumans you’ve seen are those that came with the party and the elf Kelric who was also a guest at the inn. This town seems to be largely human. The hafling looks back at you and gives you an interested look before disappearing inside.

Others may also notice a tall man slowly walking towards the copse of trees, guiding a mule by the reins. With a long white beard and pointed hat, he couldn’t look more like your stereotypical wizard unless you gave him a long wooden staff.

"Welcome back," says Brother Smythe. He looks curiously at the fact that you have Elmo in your company, but nods at the man and greets him. "Elmo… What can I do for you folks now?"

@KCC69:
Gilly enters the inn of Hommlet looking to find some means of making some money. If not through adventure as she hopes for, maybe at least some honest work bustling at some tables. As she opens the door to an inn called The Welcoming Wench she looks behind her to see four men and a woman approaching the center: Two of the men, a dwarf and a man in rogue’s armor, look uninjured but their clothing is bloodstained, and the woman is wearing heavy plate and carries a shield and hammer, almost surely a cleric geared out for fighting.
These three don’t look like common villagers and maybe with a proper introduction Gilly won’t have to hustle beers from table to table after all.

She enters the inn and looks around,, finding herself in the common room and tavern. A couple of women look dressed to serve and she approaches them to inquire about any word of adventures or work to be had. It seems as she does the serving wenches are talking quietly but with some excitement or apprehension about one of them being grabbed roughly by a patron, though everyone drinking and eating seem calm and harmless.

@charles.c.cowley
Eltrezar finds the grove easily enough as he enters what could be best assumed as the "town center". It sits off to the southeast.
Quote:
This is obviously a place of worship. The trees are neatly pruned, and the grass is well tended. A carefully placed line of bluish stones sets off the path leading to a rock cairn where flowers, nuts, berries, and garlands of leaves are placed. A small path leads beyond the shrine to a low-roofed wooden building placed under the great boughs of the central oaks of the copse.
There doesn't appear to be anyone around... that he can see anyway.
Nov 3, 2020 8:36 pm
Greetings once more Brother Smythe, Elmo is in need of some chain mail and a large axe. Would you be able to furnish these items? I am happy to pay a fair price.

Sister Alice smiles warmly at the blacksmith and glances around at the wares he has on display.
Nov 3, 2020 9:12 pm
The dwarf walks up to the blacksmith and asks in a low, almost embarrassed tone, if he knows where he might purchase a "War’orse, one tha’ won’t be shy abou’ gettin in a fight. An a lance, bot too big fer a dwarf, but big enough ter skewer some Bastid bandit"
Nov 3, 2020 10:05 pm
Angel steps up next to Couson and asks the smith, "I could use a horse too but nothin' so fancy but fearless would be a good thing. And I could use a better bow. Do you deal in bows or is there someone else in town who does that? And if I have any funds left I might like a good quick sword that can do a little more damage that this little thing." He shows the smith his short sword hilt first.
Nov 3, 2020 10:37 pm
Walking into the grove, Eltrezar gives off a huff of indignation. 'Druids. Never around when you need them.' Upon spotting the shack, he coaxes Isolde to keep going for just a few more paces, a task that would have proved impossible for any less clever than he. Arriving at the door Eltrezar takes a moment to adjust his robes and his hat, picking some signs of the road out of his beard, and then raps at the door with his bony knuckles. ahem "Hello? Is anybody home?"

@Aldrusian, Shadowace, and dominion451:

Brother Smythe listens to each of your requests and points north across the river.

"Sorry folks, you'll want to be speakin' t' Rannos an' Gremag at the Tradin' Post. I c'n do helmets an' shields and the like, but fine armourin' isn't in my skillset. I do custom work directly to the public, but it'll take some time.
The Tradin' Post is who you want to see if you need equippin' now, and they're sure to 'ave the gear you're lookin 'for. They even have some horses an' livestock."

He gives you all directions to the Trading Post, located across the river, just east of the moneychanger.

@charles.c.cowley: I'm not forgetting you, just give me a moment to post for you separate. Will be posted later this evening.

Gilly stands at the inn door, watching the strong cleric woman and her companions pass, and for a moment she considers to follow them, but she’s set her mind to check the inn first.

After they’ve gone on, she pushes through into the inn. She takes a moment to straighten out her leather chest piece. She wets her thumb in her mouth and clears off a smudge on the armor from breakfast.

Wow. Busy place!

She looks around the room, at the busy tables full of eating and drinking. She walks over to the first table she meets, puffs herself up to look heroic and exclaims:

"Hello there! Adventurer for hire! Need any adventuring done?"

The men at the table look down to see a young Halfling woman, bushy red hair, and equipped rather more for maybe catching vermin than grand adventure. They laugh to each other and tell Gilly that they have no need of an "adventurer" of her make.

Gilly repeats the heroic puffing and "Adventurer for hire!" at a few more tables.

Nothing?

After repeated rejections, Gilly decides that she will leave the inn. She heads towards the door, drawing a mix of pity and amusement from the tables she approached.

A whole big place of people, and no adventure!

She exits the inn, and sets out up along the road, eyes on the look out for an armored cleric woman and her companions.

Should have followed her in the first place, Gilly!
OOC:
I should have called this character Ginny. Dang autocorrect.

Alice thanks Brother Smythe and heads with Elmo and her cohorts toward the trading post. On arrival she repeats her request to the shop clerk, purchasing a suit of chain and an axe for the new recruit.

From the door of the trade post, Sister Alice thought she had caught sight of the fire haired Halfling she had spotted at the inn before. Usually, spotting a tail would have put the cleric on her guard, but the Halfling folk were widely known for their goodlyness. Probably just a wonderlusted youngster come to see the new commers.
OOC:
Just edit your posts and call her Ginny if that's what you want her to be called, I'm sure no one would mind.

Gilly followed the party at a distance all the way down the trade post. She’d just been down there herself earlier this morning.

Noticing that she’d been spotted, she decided she would approach the big woman.

Taking a moment to make sure she looked the part, she stepped out from where she had been looking on.

She stops a fair distance from the trading post, and presents herself:

"Gilly Puddlefoot, adventurer for hire!" she says too quietly to cover the distance.

"Scuse me. Gilly Puddlefoot, adventurer for hire!" she shouts louder to the cleric. She puffs out to look heroic.

"Can’t come any closer. He... She points to the shop clerk.

... told me not to come back "until I have real coin to spend." she says, making a mocking, miming face at the shop clerk.
Nov 4, 2020 5:09 pm
Alice smiles at the little adventurer, impressed by her forwardness.

Greetings Gilly Puddlefoot, I am Sister Alice of the Church of Saint Cuthbert. This is Elmo, Coulson, Angel and Kelric.

Alice examines the diminutive adventurer for a second and smiles.

Adventurer for hire are you? We just so happen to be in search of a righteous quest ourselves. Would you care to join us? You seem a little light on armament and I am currently providing charitable offerings, tell me what is your preferred weapon that you lack the coin for?

Kelric sees the newcomer approaching. Hello Gilly, I am Kelric. I provide fresh game to the local Inn and have just joined this fine group.. giving her a nod of greeting

Gilly returns the nod to Kelric.

Gilly Puddlefoot, adven... eh, I’m Gilly."

She then takes a moment to nod to Sister Alice, Elmo, Coulson and Angel in turn.

Adventuring sure does involve a lot of nodding

She then makes a show of taking a big step forward, when she’s sure the shop clerk is looking. Her eyes brighten up when she hears of a righteous quest.

"A rightful quest? And you need an adventurer hired for it? Well, look no further than me!

Just what kind of rightful quest is it, anyway?"

Coming closer to the trading post wares.

"Well, I did have my eye on that one there..." she says, pointing at a short bow and quiver lying exactly where she had left it this morning.

"I’ve never missed a shot in my life." she says, padding her resume to seal the deal.
Nov 5, 2020 3:58 am
Alice points out the bow and quiver as well as Elmo's chain and axe to the clerk.

How much for these good sir?
Nov 5, 2020 4:20 am
Two men run the trading post. Rannos can be best described as slow, fat, clumsy and placid. His partner Gremag is tall and thin, with sharp features and protruding eyes. Gremag tends to dither and fuss at customers, and at Rannos as well. Rannos is busy negotiating with Alice.
"Ah yes, a fine short bow! And it could be yours or your little friend's for only 35 gold! And a set of chain mail and axe? This axe here is ten gold, and a set of chain to fit the militiaman? Fifty gold!"
As he speaks you see a groom and man-at-arms minding the store, the groom sweeping and the other man stands watching, possibly on the lookout for possible theft or robbery.

@charles.c.cowley:
A tall man comes to the door of the shack and looks calmly at Eltrezar, an aloof look on his face. He stands there quietly, cooly gazing at the wizard through the doorway but doesn't speak. His eyes then lower to a wooden box fastened to the outside wall of the shack, which reads "Offerings".
Nov 5, 2020 4:54 am
A staring match begins between Eltrezar and this tall man, whom the wizard assumes is the Druid of the Grove. His eyes lock with the man's, then move to the wooden box, then back to the man, then back to "Offerings." Sigh... Eltrezar reaches into his robes and pulls out a frustratingly light money pouch. 'A Wizard should never be this low on funds, nor should he have to pay for someone's time,' he thinks as he removes five coins and places them in the box. Each clink that echoes from the offerings box is harsh to Eltrezar's ears, but it seems to be a necessity. 'After all, what is a Wizard without his staff?'

"Now then. Might you be the Druid of the Grove? I must apologize, I was not given a name."
Nov 5, 2020 4:58 am
That's a fair price, I'll also be needing a lantern, two flasks of oil, and a large sack.

Alice glances around the mercantile and spots a saddle.

We've had some interest in purchasing horses lately, do you sell them here? What for your warhorses?
