"Eh... if the elves call you Tur... eh... Turtle and the Dwarves call you Dombledurr, then what do the Halflings call you?"
"I have yet to have earned a name from your kind. Perhaps one will come to you, should providence favor you to walk by my side."
Quote:
"Anyway, what caused the fire here."
"It would seem that these bandits were common thugs, as they used this shattered lantern to start the fire. No elegance to it, no pride in their work. But is it wise for us to leave one of these marked stallions at this inn? If more of this rabble returns looking for answers, I fear that they will be more successful in their destructive manners."

You are right that more will come sir, their bag men are dead and their failure to return cannot be covered up. Do with the horse as you wish but know that more will return regardless.

We could follow their trail back to their rathole and route them out, but at this point I think it prudent to involve the town militia as I have no authority to wage war in Hommlet's name.

Alice turns about and locates Elmo from amongst the crowd and motions for him to come near.

Elmo good sir, what have we license to do in this matter? We know there are more and they have attacked the town proper.

Angel steps over to where Sister Alice is speaking to the Innkeeper and the man in the tall hat. He also notices the strange brands on the horses' rump. After a moment listening to the conversation he pipes in with a question. "You look to be a man of some learning, good sir. Is the process used to make this brand familiar to you?" He turns to the Innkeeper and asks. "Are you familiar with this brand? Does anyone in the vicinity use it?"
Nov 18, 2020 2:54 pm
@KCC69: The innkeeper seems surprised at first at her offer of the bandits' silver, then nods appreciatively. "'Thank ye kindly, little one. This ought to cover much o' th' costs o' repairin' those men's damage an' your generosity will not be forgotten."

@dominion451: Alice turns to Elmo inquiring as to what license the party has to proceed in the matter, only to realize that the man is nowhere to be seen. He seems to have dissappeared. In fact, as she ponders it, she realizes she cannot recall the last time she saw the man.

@everyone: Stowing the bandits' silver in his tunic, Ostler responds. "As to questions abou' th' brandins on these horses, they are indeed both curious an' conspicuous. I've never seen th' like o' them before, both in their design and method o' makin' 'em. An' I agree that th' likelihood o' th' rest o' those two men's companions comin' lookin' for 'em is high, and should they find one o' their horses in my stable it could spell more trouble, or maybe the outcome will be the same either way..."
He seems to ponder his thoughts a moment before turning to Eltrezar. "Do as you wish with your new animal, ser. If you wish to keep it in the stables, that is fine. As for the one the good lady has given to me, I think I shall bring it to Brother Smythe across the way. I myself am not o' th' old faith, but he is assistant to the druid o' th' grove and has use o' some o' the magics o' that way. There is a chance that either he or the druid himself can glean more information from these animals.
"In th' meantime,"
he says looking at everyone, your efforts in savin' my stables is greatly appreciated. Should any o' you be needin' a room to stay in tonight I shall be happy to put you up at no charge. For those who already paid for a room and board earlier today, as I believe the good lady and servant o' Saint Cuthbert here has, please see th' goodwife inside abou' bein' reimbursed.
"I understand your desire t' find the rest o' the men who may have had part in this, an' I agree the east road seems the most like way t' start lookin', but the hour is getting late an perhaps gettin' a good night's rest will be of greater benefit for the time bein', and a great relief to me an' th' goodwife to have you nearby, should the other men return lookin' for their companions. The dwarf here looks like he could use more than one good night's rest, to tell true, and I don't expect Brother Smythe is like to have answers tonight, though perhaps tomorrow any information he can glean will prove worth a bit o' patience now."
OOC:
For the record, after finishing your shopping at the Trading Post, getting your mounts fixed up with their tack, fighting two bandits, and fighting a stable fire, it's currently probably after 8pm, possibly approaching 9pm. The sun has set, and darkness is quickly setting in. Recall as well that Coulson has only 2 Hit Points, though to make use of a 1d3 natural healing roll he must take 24hrs of complete rest.

Coulson, in the morning we should hit the church and have them do some healing to get you back to 100%
Alice clasps arms with the innkeeper in thanks of his offer to comp the rooms, though she has no intention of collecting her money from his wife.

Thank ye sir, we will keep watch through the night and be ready should they return. Where would Elmo have run off to? Is there anything I should know about the lad?

"Elmo? 'E's an alright fella. Master-at-Arms o' th' militia.
Takes orders well enough when I 'ave to give them. Most o' the time you're like as not to find him in me tavern with an ale in hand to be honest. Doesn't seem to cause any problems.
"Ey, Glenda,"
he shouts over to a serving girl who is outside looky-looing the fire damage, "Was Elmo inside when you came out jes' now?"

"Elmo? No..."
She shakes her head. "Probably at home gettin' an earful...

Ostler shakes his head knowingly, and says quietly in a conspiratorial tone, "Elmo's pa isn't so keen on 'is son's carousin' ways, if yeh might've noticed when we was over there earlier today...

"So anyway, 'e's usually here or home if he isn't tending to 'is militia duties. He sometimes seems to slip away for a few days at a time and comes back. No idea where 'e goes. Probably found a warm bed to lie in with someone somewhere..."
He nods like that's about the gist of it.
OOC:
Anyone else's characters have any errands they want to do today?

A weary sigh escapes from Eltrezar, now sapped of magicks and energy. It had been a long day travelling to this town and fighting with his mule the whole way, and the promise of a warm bed distracts the wizard from most of the discussion. "I would be quite happy to take you up on the offer of a room. I am most weary from my work here, and suspect many long days ahead."

No errands for Alice, ready for sleep and a shift on the watch rotation
Nov 18, 2020 9:02 pm
Pretty much dead on his feet, Coulson sways a little from side to side "Aye tha’ bed sounds right good ter me. If’n yer all will ‘scuse me, ima go get me ‘ead down"
Nov 19, 2020 12:05 am
Angel nods at Coulson's suggestion and follows him into the Inn.

Gilly follows the crew into the inn for the night, taking one last glance up and down the street to ensure it’s free of undesirables.

"I’ll take watch too! Didn’t do much today anyhow, so I don’t mind.
Your inn is under my protection!"
she says to Ostler.

She handles her bow and short sword as if to reassure him!

"Any trouble, well they’ll have to deal with me... and eh, the rest!
I’ll call everyone else too!"

Gilly sets herself up in the corner of the inn. Eyes peeled for her watch. Everyone’s a suspect.
Nov 19, 2020 4:15 am
The party turns in for the night. Those that had suspicions that the rest of the men from earlier would return to attack the inn in the night agree upon a watch schedule, and despite having valid concerns, no further attacks come. Possibly the two men acted alone in their act of sabotage. Possibly the rest of the men were frightened off by the fact that two of their own were handled so easily and quickly. Possibly the two men were simply there to probe your defences and get a measure of your strength. In any case, the night is quiet and your sleep interrupted.

Those of you that get up early in the morning come downstairs to the tavern for breakfast to find Elmo leaning at the bar with an ale in hand already, chatting flirtatiously with a bleary-eyed Glenda who looks as if she’s not even fully awake yet. As you walk into the room he turns to you, looks you over with glassy eyes, and says in his drawling, slightly slurred manner, "Ey there, if it isn’t the mighty adventurers themselves! Glenda here was jes’ tellin’ me I missed quite the excitement las’ night. A shame, though it sounds like my new axe wasn’t needed. Hopefully I’m around for the next one. Were you plannin’ on us headin’ out today to see what there is to see, or have you errands to run first?"
Nov 19, 2020 4:33 am
Eltrezar the Medium, looking quite bedraggled, dips a hunk of stale bread into his cup of coffee while studying a massive tome that takes up most of a table. 'Of all that I have learned and heard across the realms, I have no idea what that man just said. He's less decipherable than this Coulson fellow...'

"If we are to engage in more of this savage fighting, a trip to the smithy to pick up a few knives wouldn't be remiss. However, if time is of the essence, I can just try to give the rest of you the opportunity to engage instead." Hrmph! Despite mentioning a possible urgency, nothing in the wizard's motions suggest that he has any intention of hurrying. He continues reading the tome, muttering to himself as he repeats phrases written in a cryptic hand.
Nov 19, 2020 4:46 am
Alice emerges from her room, feeling rested and refreshed. She nods a greeting to Elmo as he chatters at her and offers a more formal greeting to Eltrezar.

Good morrow sir. Of course we shall make time for you to equip yourself, let me know if you require extra coin.

Alice orders a large breakfast and then speaks to Elmo's musing.

I don't think we can afford to let this go, my wish is to ride East and confront these vandals to take their measure, if not drive them out all together. I hope we can count you among our numbers Mister Elmo.

Coulson is still snoring away in his bed. He will need rousing, he is in a really deep slumber

Gilly wakes up. She’s still in the corner where she had posted last night. She had finished her watch, and quite cozy in the main room, had simply curled up on a bench and slept soundly.

She awakens as the inn begins to come to life. Yawning, she settles down to a breakfast with Alice. Mouth full:

"Miss Alice. You thinking we’ll be headin’ out of town today then?

Only I think that Timber wants to go for a ride."
Nov 19, 2020 4:28 pm
Grinning, Alice imagines the wide eyed halfling trotting into battle atop her pony and nearly spits out her food.

Yes I think we may ride out today Miss Gilly, and I'm sure Timber could use the exercise. He is a growing horse after all. First however, I'd like to take Coulson to the church to finish up his healing from the battle we faced on the way in.

Angel slips down the steps almost soundlessly just in time to hear the last few words from Alice to Gilly. He hails the Innkeeper or his daughter or wife and points to the meal that had just been delivered to Sister Alice and sits down at the table.

"I take it our dwarven partner is still abed? While you take him to church I will stay here with whoever else wishes to stay to make sure nothing happens like last night."
Nov 19, 2020 10:21 pm
Alice dips her head gratefully to Angel for his offer of protection.

Thank you Angel, I appreciate your looking out for these people. Hopefully I won't be but a short while at the church, then we can discuss our plans moving forward.

Having finished her meal, Alice returns to her room to don her armor then stops by Coulson's door to rouse the dwarf.

Coulson! Rise and shine! Let us get you fed and then see about healing those wounds!
Nov 20, 2020 4:33 am
With a groan and barely audible creaking of bones, Eltrezar (who is not locally known as either Tarathiel or Dalomdûmir) rises to his feet and slams the book shut. "I shall head to the smithy and purchase some new knives, then, and meet you at the church. I have some interest in seeing this chapel, as I respect the common-sense ideas of this St. Cuthbert. And once my task is complete, we can depart for our mission." Without awaiting a response, he heads back to his room to pack the tome away and prepare his gear for the day. If nobody stops him, he then heads to the blacksmith with the intention of purchasing a few daggers.
