"Not to worry Gilly, we won't be sneaking if we ride the horses up. We will wait back here out of sight while you three sneak up and shoot the guard. If no one notices you do so then we will walk over and join you, but if your arrows do not kill the guard he may shout an alarm and then more men will come out of the hole. The horses are so that if that happens we can rush to your aid as quickly as possible."
OOC:
the riders will hold position near 36,EE on the last marked combat map

Gilly nods to both Coulson and Alice, understanding their plan.

"Be careful." she smiles to her adventuring companions.

She turns and heads into the brush once again.

Elmo nods and says, "Aye, not a bad idea Sister. Are you figurin' we rush the hole in th' wall after th' 'alflin' and th' thief take their shots at th' crossbowman? Is tha' what yer thinkin'?"
OOC:
For real, though. Is the plan that Angel and Gilly try and sneak to the bushes, and fire at the man guarding the hole in the wall, and then anyone mounted on a warhorse will cross the shallow moat and dismount and storm the Moathouse Wall's hole?

And if so are we thinking Alice and Elmo ride one horse, Eltrezar and Coulson on the second one, Angel and Gilly on foot creeping?

What is the rest going to do? Attack on foot and hope the horses draw the cross bowman's fire?

Also, where is Gilly creeping to? The bushes directly east of the hole, or the ones more southeast?
Dec 10, 2020 1:27 am
"That's right Elmo, let us hope our bowmen are able to take out the guard, otherwise we may be riding into fire."
OOC:
Yes Angel, Gilly and Kelric sneak ahead and shoot the guard, as soon as they fire Gilly should signal is with a bird call at which point we will charge and dismount within melee distance of the hole. Coulson and I will share a horse and Elmo and Eltrezar will share to more evenly distribute the weight. I'll let Gilly chime in on which bushes to creep to...

OOC:
Yes, three of us will move up and sneak attack this guard.

The others hold back to see how that goes. Awaiting a signal.

I don’t think I’ll push my luck too much and remain to the southeast. As soon as I’m in range, we can prepare our shots.
Dec 10, 2020 1:47 am
Eltrezar grumbles all the way to the horse he is expected to share with the drunkard. "Perhaps the two of us should lag behind you a bit, Sister Alice. I don't trust this man to be subtle in the slightest, and I worry he might sway into any bolts instead of away." None of these words were hidden from Elmo.
Dec 10, 2020 2:26 am
"Of course Master Eltrezar, Coulson and I will ride in the vanguard,

Alice looks to Elmo with a raised hand of placation,

"Not as a slight to you good sir Elmo, bit because if there is blood to be spilt I would rather it be mine than yours."
Dec 10, 2020 5:24 am
Angel follows Gilly trying to keep low and quiet. He will place himself where Gilly points trying to keep a good distance apart so that their arrows will come from two different directions to confuse the guard if they both miss.
Dec 10, 2020 4:36 pm
"Aye, tis a good plan Sister. I’m glad we had yer tactical mind with us". Coulson mounts his horse, then offers a gnarled hand down to Sister Alice, to help swing her up o to the back of the horse
Dec 11, 2020 2:02 am
Kelric nods in agreement and gets his bow ready to fire.
OOC:
He will attempt to get into a spot that still has cover but provides a direct line of fire if possible.
Dec 11, 2020 2:58 am
"Thank you Coulson, with Saint Cuthbert at our side we cannot fail."

Alice takes the dwarf's hand and mounts the war horse, gripping it's flanks with her powerful legs so as to keep ready her hammer and shield.
Dec 11, 2020 4:31 am
With a plan of attack decided upon, Gilly, Angel, and Kelric press forward at a creep, using the natural environment whenever possivle to stay in cover.

Meanwhile Alice and Coulsion mounted on one warhorse, and Elmo and Eltrezar mounted on the other wait for a sign that their companions have made a bow attack.

Around the other side of the moathouse, Gilly, Angel, and Kelric spot the crossbowman keeping watch, but through the use of cover and patience Gilly and Angel eventually get to within 35-50 feet of the man standing watch. Kelric is about 65 feet from the guard, but all of them are within short range.

OOC:
The guard failed to spot you and Gilly, Angel, and Kelric now get a Surprise Round. After they attack, I will roll Initiative for everyone.
Surprise Round! Turn order as follows:
-->1. Gilly, Angel, Kelric (S)
You're all within Short Range of the crossbowman, and thus get +1 to yor To-Hit rolls on top of any Dexterity Modifier.

Gilly sets an arrow in her bow. It occurs to her that this is the first time that she’ll be firing on a person.

... if Alice and Coulson and the others say it’s okay then it must be okay...

She sees the man, unaware of the impending flurry. She draws back the bow, closing one eye. Her tongue protrudes slightly.

She fires. The arrow clacks against the stone.

Clack... clackety...

Perhaps the idea of killing a man causes her to hesitate or lose focus, but for whatever reason Gilly's arrow files off the mark pretty badly, clattering against the stone wall a foot or so from the crossbowman. Angel's arrow is released a split second later and misses the guard's chest by a hair, clattering to the other side of the man.

The man instinctively flinches as each arrow clatters to each side of him, and his eyes fall on Gilly and Angel, bewilderment on his face as he suddenly realizes the two attackers got so close to his position unnoticed. He still doesn't see Kelric to his right.
OOC:

Yondalla, guide this man’s shot!
Dec 14, 2020 5:39 pm
Seeing Gilly's and Angel's arrows fail to hit their target, and instead reveal the halfling's and thief's positions, Kelric lets loose his arrow, giving the party their final chance to capitalize on their ambush... And true that arrow flies! As the brigand stands at the gap in the wall staring at Gilly and Angel with a bewildered look on his face, Kelric's arrow sinks deep in his throat, and with a gurgle cut off he staggers back and hit the ground dead.

For a moment the party doesn't know whether to give a bird call or not, when their choice is made for them.
Inside you hear a voice shout, "Oy! Bloody hell, Owen? Some bastard outside the walls just shot Owen dead!"

Another voice, harsh and with authority, begins barking orders... "You there! Get at that hole and see what were dealing with! Use your crossbow if you have to; I don't want anyone squeezing through and getting into this place before I've got a head count on what we're dealing with! You... be ready to back him up if he falls as well! You... with me! Get over here and help me with this!"
OOC:
Couple of things:
First here's a keyed map of everything the "sniper group" can see:
https://i.imgur.com/CeYboDz.png

And here's a keyed map of everything the mounted group can see:
https://i.imgur.com/LXHFyn7.png

Second, while I usually make individual Initiative rolls for enemies, I don't want to reveal how many are inside, so I just made a group one for the Brigands this round. I accidentally marked it as hidden, but it was a "5". As your party members begin spotting individual brigands they will be designated a number, much as every other enemy has in this game, and they will get an individual Initiative roll at the start of a new round, but undiscovered brigands will still have one group roll.

Third, remember that Alice is on Coulson's horse, and Eltrezar is on Elmo's. Therefore, you may make regular actions but your PC's movement is limited to your horse handler's turn, unless you choose to dismount and go on foot. I'm not going to force you to use an Action to dismount, we'll assume you hopped off easily enough, but mounting a horse will take an Action.

Fourth, the hole in the Moathouse wall is extremely narrow, allowing regular sized characters to pass through, but just barely. This will cause a sever bottleneck effect. To enter and exit through the hole you MUST past from GG10 to FF11, or vice-versa. Likewise, melee attacks can only be made from GG10 to FF11, or vice-versa. This will severely limit movement and melee attack opportunities.

And finally, the Surprise round ends with one brigand watchman killed. Round 1 begins! Turn order is as follows:
-->1. Coulson, Sister Alice (7)
2. Kelric (6)
3. Unidentified Brigands (5)
4. Angel (4)
5. Gilly (3)
6. Eltrezar, Elmo (2)
Good Luck!
