Part 3: Investigating the Moathouse Ruins

Seeing the opening so close, Mal walls toward the opening in the great room cautiously...
OOC:
Mal checks R9
Feb 6, 2021 4:52 am
Eltrezar follows behind Mal, accepting her armor as a shield of his own. Dagger in hand, he prepares to help examine any area. He keeps his distance from the barbarian, seemingly tired of the arguing.

Gilly follows behind. This room, then another... and there’s that tower, too.

She looks at the people arranged around her! Could there be more tied up, being used to sustain snakes or lizards somewhere in this fort?
Feb 6, 2021 6:17 pm
Mal approaches the open doorway and looks inside to find a storeroom. A stairway of stone leads down into the earth on the east side of the room. To her left, against the south wall, a picked over shelf stands crawling with giant rats desperately looking for food. More loiter about the top of the stairway. They are hungry and fearless, and when they see Mal they rush after her, and with their squeals, more rush up from the staircase from below.

OOC:
Neither side was surprised this round. Thirteen Giant Rats make up the enemies in this combat, and I was tempted to just make one roll for them all, but I don't want them to have a chance to "zerg rush" on any of you in one fell swoop, so I went ahead and rolled individually for each rat, and hopefully that will give your party a chance to break up their rush and hack some down and reduce their numbers before someone gets chewed to pieces all at once.
As far as which party member the rats target each round when their turn comes up, I will randomly roll a 1d6 on each rat's attack. The "Target Selection" roll will play out as follows:
1. Angel
2. Gilly
3. Eltrezar
4. Loken
5. Mal
6. Elmo

Round 1 begins! Turn order is as follows:
-->1. Angel, Eltrezar, #4, #5, #12 (5)
2. Loken, #1, #8 (4)
3. Gilly, #3 (3)
4. Maloria, #7, #10, #13 (2)
5. #2, #6, #9, #11 (1)
6.. Elmo (7, 2-handed)

I noticed Aldrusian posted while the Please Hold image was up and I was editing the post, so Angel's token isn't in the image where he probably wanted it, but I'll make note that Angel moved forward to cover the others, and he and Eltrezar are first up in the turn order. For the time being, just call out a number between 1-13 if you're attacking a Giant Rat and I'll apply any damage to that number. As they begin to spill out of the room I'll start labeling them, but I had labels on in this tiny room and it was a complete overlapping mess
you couldn't make heads or tails of.

OOC:
I'll let the rats go right now just so you guys have something to fight and don't have to waste a turn waiting for them to burst out of the room.
One Giant Rat rushes at Maloria, scurries up her leg, using her armor for purchase and bites her hard on the neck, opening up a large wound which gushes blood.
Another Giant Rat rushes the room aiming for Eltrezar, but since Maloria blocks the doorway, it bites at her instead.
The third Giant Rat goes directly after Mal as well, but she fends it off.
OOC:
Round 1 continues! Turn order is as follows:
-->1. Angel, Eltrezar, #4, #5, #12 (5)
2. Loken, #1, #8 (4)

4. Maloria, #7, #10, #13 (2)
5. #2, #6, #9, #11 (1)
6.. Elmo (7, 2-handed)

Maloria takes 3HP Damage from the first Giant Rat bite. Each Giant Rat is about 3' long. As long as Mal continues blocking the doorway, the Giant Rats' have no choice but to focus their attacks on her solely, and there's going to be little anyone else can do in terms of melee attacks, as the doorway is acting like a bottleneck. Ranged attackers can still fire at them, but will suffer a penalty to their attack rolls as the rats are using Maloria as cover.
On the other hand, I would say that three 3' rats are about all that could occupy a 5' space in front of Maloria, and so, like the PCs, the rats are at a standstill for their melee attacks as well. Maloria has a decent armor class, but is it going to be enough to withstand a constant barrage of rats for long if she holds at the doorway?

Secret Roll

"Rats!" cries out the wizard, as he takes a small step back. The sudden rush of animistic hunger being halted by the armored frame of his new Dwarven friend was not lost on him, and Eltrezar takes a moment to consider his options. "Barbarian, time to prove your worth against these Rodentia gigantes! Have at them!" He flings a dagger at one of the rats but finds his aim hindered by the Dwarf before him. Finally, he leaps out of the way to allow the warriors an opportunity to enter the fray.
OOC:
Eltrezar throws a dagger at Rat 1, which is any rat he has a decent shot of hitting past Mal. The rules say the GM assigns the penalty for cover. He then moves back ten feet to get out of the way.

OOC:
Good point. I would say due to Maloria's small stature as a dwarf, but wearing bulky plate armor, the penalty for ranged attacks around her is going to be -2.
Eltrezar throws a dagger at one of the rats and hears the now all-too familiar sound of metal clattering against stone somewhere on the other side of Maloria.

Loken barrels in looking to get at least some sort of action in this fight, but his attempts to stab past Mal prove fruitless as a result of the awkward angle, length of his sword, and the little cleric obscuring his view of targets.

Angel sees the press of bodies at the door is going to make it all but impossible to get another shot off with his bow, and the rats on front of Maloria are all but completely obscured now.

Another giant rat rushes in to fill the space previously occupied by its fallen companion and takes a bite at Mal, but it doesn't even come close to her with its teeth.

OOC:
This is really becoming a knife fight in a phone booth real quickly, and unfortunately for the rats, as with the party, there's no more room for them to occupy a space to make a melee attack Mal at the doorway, and #8 must forfeit it's turn while #1, #4, and #5 try and pick the cleric apart. This gives you a tactical decision to make: Keep Mal at the door where only she is able to make melee attacks, but only deals with 3 rats at a time, and hopes her AC1 can keep her safe against the assault, or move away from the door, letting the rats free to rush into the room where everyone has a chance to fight, but also become subject to rat bites with inferior AC than Mals plate armor.

Round 1 continues! Turn order is as follows:
1. Angel, Eltrezar, #4, #5, #12 (5)
2. Loken, #1, #8 (4)
-->3. Gilly, #3 (3)
4. Maloria, #7, #10, #13 (2)
5. #2, #6, #9, #11 (1)
6. Elmo (7, 2-handed)
The only rat visible to Gilly would be #5 who is directly in front of Mal but can be seen through the doorway. None of the others can be seen from the halfling's position.

Gilly will move back, to give the others some space to set up a kill box, and then fire a shot from her bow through the legs of the cleric!
OOC:
I understand it’s a -2 to hit, right? So I’ll just fire at a +1 instead of the usual +3
Having missed the rats, somehow managing to fire under the legs of her companions but over the heads of the rats, she draws her sword, ready to meet them when the emerge from the room next turn!
