Part 1: Lance Rock

Apr 19, 2016 7:14 pm
Red Larch is a little town on the Long Road, a few days’ travel north of Waterdeep and south of Yartar. It’s a way station for caravans coming to or from the cities of the North, with only one inn, the Swinging Sword.

The Swinging Sword is a three-story stone structure, crowned by a steep slate roof that bristles with many chimneys. A signboard juts out over the door, hanging from chains. It’s a ten-foot-long carved wooden scimitar emblazoned with the inn’s name in red paint on both sides. An inn yard with stables and outbuildings lies behind the building.

The ground room of the inn is bustling with activity with guests eating breakfast or having a morning drink. Behind the counter, a tall, fair-skinned woman is beckoning a few travelers towards her. She catches your eye, waving you over with the rag she was previously using to wipe down the counter. You recognize her as Kaylessa Irkell, the proprietor of the establishment, who had previously offered you the chance to make some coin in exchange for a potentially dangerous excursion. It appears she has invited others to join you.

When the group appears to be settled, all crowded around the counter with drinks in hand -- "On the house, on the house," Kaylessa had said. "As long as you lot do a good job." -- Kaylessa begins her story in earnest.

"Now, I’m sure you’re all here just because of the promise of some gold," Kaylessa began, leaning forward conspiratorially. "But it’s only fair for you to know what you’re getting yourself into. I don’t know how long you all have been here in Red Larch, but you must have noticed the troubling things happening all around the valley. Fogs in the Sumber Hills even at midday, hot and muggy winds even this time of year, sudden bolts of lightning flashing across the sky even without a cloud in sight--fell magic, I say. Even some of the folks in town are acting… I don’t know. Strange."

She cast a glance around the patrons at the bar, gesturing for the group to shuffle further away from the half-elf who was eating his breakfast next to them.

"Now, I think it has something to do with the happenings over at Lance Rock. You must know the place--it’s a big landmark right near here. Well, I think there’s been some suspicious things going on over there, but the people in this place are too set in their ways to do anything about it. I’m willing to pay you lot 50 gold pieces--total, not each, before you ask; I’m not made of money--if you go and clear out anything sinister lurking over at Lance Rock. I’m fine with being wrong--Lathander knows I’ve been wrong before--but I need someone to at least make sure it’s clear before I can let it go."

"Ah Lance Rock, yes I've been by there several times on my travels. I'll give it a look-see shouldn't be too much trouble how about you two musicians? Wanna see Lance Rock?

Rak looks around for other viable candidates.

"Maybe that human looking guy there. In the dark leathers. I'll go give him some dice and invite him to join."

Rak grabs a few wooden dice from his pack and twists them between his fingers. He rolls them on the table in front of the rogue.

"Hey there, you look a little bored. Wanna join me and those two singers for a quick look at Lance Rock. There's some coin in it from the bar-keep. What say you?"
Apr 19, 2016 9:20 pm
Ralen looks up, amused.

"Two singers? Are you sure you'll be able to handle yourselves? Quite the interesting group to go adventuring."
Apr 19, 2016 10:17 pm
Leaning on his cane pretty hard he looks at Ralen and replies.
"I've been better off with worse."
Apr 19, 2016 10:39 pm
"Sing? Maybe some scat but I'm not as hep at the vocals as I am with my strings. I can dig what you're laying down about that oddness in the air, though. I saw the earth open up and swallow some folk which is part the reason I'm here."

Elly swigs back a short glass of whiskey and looks about at the other patrons, suddenly self concious of any glances toward their group.

"Best just check out this Lance Rock and make sure it's clear. Hand me some skin on that fifty and I can jibe with it.

Muril scratches at his beard a bit after hearing this offer. Then he grabs his money pouch, and it feels a little light, despite having played for room and board for the past 9 nights.

"Well stranger, I can tell ya that ol' Muril Haggred ain't no stranger to a brawl. I'm happy ta help, y'all, but let's make sure we're back before the after dinner show. Had my eye on a half-elf gal I was hopin' ta see again tunight. I'mma sing a real pretty song for her tunight, wunna muh songs about my ma oughtta do."

Muril runs up to his room to gather up a few things for the day trip.
Apr 20, 2016 1:20 am
Ralen smiles.

"Sure, why not. I'm in it for the coin."

"My, did you say you saw the ground itself open up, dear?" Kaylessa repeated to Ellodora, pausing as she began to wipe down the counter. "See, these are exactly the kinds of things up talking about. Ground opening up, lightning in the sky--I don't want to be an alarmist, but surely, the folk here need to be a bit more alarmed at the happenings here."

"Well, well," she continued hurriedly as a rush of patrons entered the inn, letting in a gust of wind from outside. "You folks know the way. Just southwest of here, about three or four hours to walk. It's a pretty clear day. I bet you'd even be able to see it once you get out of the town proper for a bit."
OOC:
You're welcome to do anything else in the inn or the town before leaving, or you can ask Kaylessa anything you want. If you just want to head off, then just let me know your marching order and how you want to get there (walking, try to get horses, etc.

"I doubt you youngin's could make it there without a horse underneath ya. huh? As for me I've walked these lands time and time again, last time I was actually at Lance Rock was... well... " Rak murmurs to himself for near a full minute counting. "59 years ago! Yeah, I can barely remember what the trail looks like..."

Raktasha trails off and the calls over Kaylessa. "Kay, would you like to buy a dice pair or you still got your older ones? Got some sixers made from antler. Oh, never mind we need to get moving I guess."

Raktasha looks at his new traveling companions and feels comfortable with his new company. Taking them all in he just waits for someone to make the next move.

Checking his equipment, Ralen stands, moving near the group.

"So, do we have a plan?"
Apr 20, 2016 2:09 pm
Muril reenters the communal area of The Swinging Sword, now wearing more adventurous attire. He traded in his casual clothing that he typically wears when performing, to a set of clothes that looked like they've been in a tussle or two. He wore chain mail, suggesting to the party that he's not afraid to get up close and personal with any devious types. Holstered in his belt he has a mace and a flail, and on his back by his left shoulder a handaxe is sheathed for easy access.

"Welp, y'all ready to go?"

Elly similarly changes into road clothes. The path from Candlekeep to the Swing Sword has been a long one and after she has all her satchels in place and her cello at her back, she goes to the innkeep to purchase a single pound of flour. She's read more than one mystery novel where a few handfuls of flour have come in handy and if she's going on a real adventure, she wants to make sure she's prepared.

Still . . . something was eating at her. "Y'all" . . . these northlanders sure speak like they have bees in their mouth. I miss Torban and his strike-me-dead homebrew. The old dwarf merchant and his friends was where she learned the talk that matched her walk. Hearing all this strange tongue made her miss home all the more. But home didn't matter anymore. It was for her friends that she had made it this far. She would make that murderer pay and if this was the next step to finding a lead, then she would pick it up.

"I'm all in. Let's screw this juice joint."

After a few hours of uneventful travel, the group managed to find their way to Lance Rock, piecing together the vague directions from Kaylessa and the haphazard recollections of Raktasha from years past. A few miles away, the group could finally see it--a narrow, twenty-five-foot menhir of bare, gray rock that juts eastward at a sixty-degree angle--and they changed course slightly to move directly towards it. The gray granite of Lance Rock stands out sharply against the surrounding limestone, but other than that, nothing seems unusual.
OOC:
Feel free to roleplay anything that you'd like to have happened during the travel, if you want to. Anyone who wants to look around Lance Rock can make either a Perception check or an Investigation check.

"Ah this must be Lance Rock, yes... Not those other two crags I mentioned. Like I said it was 59 years ago. So what the heck are we looking for, just checking out to see if all is... safe? Let's circle the rock and give it a hard look."

Raktasha makes sure to not be in the front or the back of the party but ushers everyone with him while looking and analyzing the rock.

Raktasha searched the base of Lance Rock, giving it a good look before beginning to edge southward and following a trail of brush that got thicker and thicker the further he went. He managed to pick out a trail that the brush had partially covered about a hundred feet south of Lance Rock proper. A neatly-painted sign stood beside the trail and Raktasha read on the sign:

Come no closer
lest you catch
the disfiguring plague
that afflicts me!
The Lord of Lance Rock

Squinting into the brush, Raktasha could just make out the opening of a cave, but it was too far away to see any more details.

"Lance Rock. . . I think I may remember a beat or two about that. I use to study maps and all sorts of jazz back at the monastery." Elly thinks back to the crazy maps that had looked at over the years and tried to recall anything about this place.

Muril and Ellodora both recall that Lance Rock is a a prominent landmark in the area, sometimes used to give directions to travelers making their way towards Red Larch, but other than that, there's nothing that seems to come to mind.
