Part 1: Lance Rock

Apr 19, 2016 7:14 pm
Red Larch is a little town on the Long Road, a few days’ travel north of Waterdeep and south of Yartar. It’s a way station for caravans coming to or from the cities of the North, with only one inn, the Swinging Sword.

The Swinging Sword is a three-story stone structure, crowned by a steep slate roof that bristles with many chimneys. A signboard juts out over the door, hanging from chains. It’s a ten-foot-long carved wooden scimitar emblazoned with the inn’s name in red paint on both sides. An inn yard with stables and outbuildings lies behind the building.

The ground room of the inn is bustling with activity with guests eating breakfast or having a morning drink. Behind the counter, a tall, fair-skinned woman is beckoning a few travelers towards her. She catches your eye, waving you over with the rag she was previously using to wipe down the counter. You recognize her as Kaylessa Irkell, the proprietor of the establishment, who had previously offered you the chance to make some coin in exchange for a potentially dangerous excursion. It appears she has invited others to join you.

When the group appears to be settled, all crowded around the counter with drinks in hand -- "On the house, on the house," Kaylessa had said. "As long as you lot do a good job." -- Kaylessa begins her story in earnest.

"Now, I’m sure you’re all here just because of the promise of some gold," Kaylessa began, leaning forward conspiratorially. "But it’s only fair for you to know what you’re getting yourself into. I don’t know how long you all have been here in Red Larch, but you must have noticed the troubling things happening all around the valley. Fogs in the Sumber Hills even at midday, hot and muggy winds even this time of year, sudden bolts of lightning flashing across the sky even without a cloud in sight--fell magic, I say. Even some of the folks in town are acting… I don’t know. Strange."

She cast a glance around the patrons at the bar, gesturing for the group to shuffle further away from the half-elf who was eating his breakfast next to them.

"Now, I think it has something to do with the happenings over at Lance Rock. You must know the place--it’s a big landmark right near here. Well, I think there’s been some suspicious things going on over there, but the people in this place are too set in their ways to do anything about it. I’m willing to pay you lot 50 gold pieces--total, not each, before you ask; I’m not made of money--if you go and clear out anything sinister lurking over at Lance Rock. I’m fine with being wrong--Lathander knows I’ve been wrong before--but I need someone to at least make sure it’s clear before I can let it go."
Apr 19, 2016 8:58 pm
"Ah Lance Rock, yes I've been by there several times on my travels. I'll give it a look-see shouldn't be too much trouble how about you two musicians? Wanna see Lance Rock?

Rak looks around for other viable candidates.

"Maybe that human looking guy there. In the dark leathers. I'll go give him some dice and invite him to join."

Rak grabs a few wooden dice from his pack and twists them between his fingers. He rolls them on the table in front of the rogue.

"Hey there, you look a little bored. Wanna join me and those two singers for a quick look at Lance Rock. There's some coin in it from the bar-keep. What say you?"
Apr 19, 2016 9:20 pm
Ralen looks up, amused.

"Two singers? Are you sure you'll be able to handle yourselves? Quite the interesting group to go adventuring."
Apr 19, 2016 10:17 pm
Leaning on his cane pretty hard he looks at Ralen and replies.
"I've been better off with worse."
Apr 19, 2016 10:39 pm
"Sing? Maybe some scat but I'm not as hep at the vocals as I am with my strings. I can dig what you're laying down about that oddness in the air, though. I saw the earth open up and swallow some folk which is part the reason I'm here."

Elly swigs back a short glass of whiskey and looks about at the other patrons, suddenly self concious of any glances toward their group.

"Best just check out this Lance Rock and make sure it's clear. Hand me some skin on that fifty and I can jibe with it.
Apr 20, 2016 1:18 am
Muril scratches at his beard a bit after hearing this offer. Then he grabs his money pouch, and it feels a little light, despite having played for room and board for the past 9 nights.

"Well stranger, I can tell ya that ol' Muril Haggred ain't no stranger to a brawl. I'm happy ta help, y'all, but let's make sure we're back before the after dinner show. Had my eye on a half-elf gal I was hopin' ta see again tunight. I'mma sing a real pretty song for her tunight, wunna muh songs about my ma oughtta do."

Muril runs up to his room to gather up a few things for the day trip.
Apr 20, 2016 1:20 am
Ralen smiles.

"Sure, why not. I'm in it for the coin."
Apr 20, 2016 3:27 am
"My, did you say you saw the ground itself open up, dear?" Kaylessa repeated to Ellodora, pausing as she began to wipe down the counter. "See, these are exactly the kinds of things up talking about. Ground opening up, lightning in the sky--I don't want to be an alarmist, but surely, the folk here need to be a bit more alarmed at the happenings here."

"Well, well," she continued hurriedly as a rush of patrons entered the inn, letting in a gust of wind from outside. "You folks know the way. Just southwest of here, about three or four hours to walk. It's a pretty clear day. I bet you'd even be able to see it once you get out of the town proper for a bit."
OOC:
You're welcome to do anything else in the inn or the town before leaving, or you can ask Kaylessa anything you want. If you just want to head off, then just let me know your marching order and how you want to get there (walking, try to get horses, etc.

"I doubt you youngin's could make it there without a horse underneath ya. huh? As for me I've walked these lands time and time again, last time I was actually at Lance Rock was... well... " Rak murmurs to himself for near a full minute counting. "59 years ago! Yeah, I can barely remember what the trail looks like..."

Raktasha trails off and the calls over Kaylessa. "Kay, would you like to buy a dice pair or you still got your older ones? Got some sixers made from antler. Oh, never mind we need to get moving I guess."

Raktasha looks at his new traveling companions and feels comfortable with his new company. Taking them all in he just waits for someone to make the next move.
Apr 20, 2016 1:21 pm
Checking his equipment, Ralen stands, moving near the group.

"So, do we have a plan?"
Apr 20, 2016 2:09 pm
Muril reenters the communal area of The Swinging Sword, now wearing more adventurous attire. He traded in his casual clothing that he typically wears when performing, to a set of clothes that looked like they've been in a tussle or two. He wore chain mail, suggesting to the party that he's not afraid to get up close and personal with any devious types. Holstered in his belt he has a mace and a flail, and on his back by his left shoulder a handaxe is sheathed for easy access.

"Welp, y'all ready to go?"

Elly similarly changes into road clothes. The path from Candlekeep to the Swing Sword has been a long one and after she has all her satchels in place and her cello at her back, she goes to the innkeep to purchase a single pound of flour. She's read more than one mystery novel where a few handfuls of flour have come in handy and if she's going on a real adventure, she wants to make sure she's prepared.

Still . . . something was eating at her. "Y'all" . . . these northlanders sure speak like they have bees in their mouth. I miss Torban and his strike-me-dead homebrew. The old dwarf merchant and his friends was where she learned the talk that matched her walk. Hearing all this strange tongue made her miss home all the more. But home didn't matter anymore. It was for her friends that she had made it this far. She would make that murderer pay and if this was the next step to finding a lead, then she would pick it up.

"I'm all in. Let's screw this juice joint."

After a few hours of uneventful travel, the group managed to find their way to Lance Rock, piecing together the vague directions from Kaylessa and the haphazard recollections of Raktasha from years past. A few miles away, the group could finally see it--a narrow, twenty-five-foot menhir of bare, gray rock that juts eastward at a sixty-degree angle--and they changed course slightly to move directly towards it. The gray granite of Lance Rock stands out sharply against the surrounding limestone, but other than that, nothing seems unusual.
OOC:

"Ah this must be Lance Rock, yes... Not those other two crags I mentioned. Like I said it was 59 years ago. So what the heck are we looking for, just checking out to see if all is... safe? Let's circle the rock and give it a hard look."

Raktasha makes sure to not be in the front or the back of the party but ushers everyone with him while looking and analyzing the rock.

Raktasha searched the base of Lance Rock, giving it a good look before beginning to edge southward and following a trail of brush that got thicker and thicker the further he went. He managed to pick out a trail that the brush had partially covered about a hundred feet south of Lance Rock proper. A neatly-painted sign stood beside the trail and Raktasha read on the sign:

Come no closer
lest you catch
the disfiguring plague
that afflicts me!
The Lord of Lance Rock

Squinting into the brush, Raktasha could just make out the opening of a cave, but it was too far away to see any more details.

Ralen jumps, surprised that someone knows his name. Shaking his head, he dismisses it, concentrating on the tasks at hand.

"Certainly."

Moving ahead of the group, Ralen studies the sign, then inspects the area of the trail around it for anything interesting.
Apr 21, 2016 6:00 pm
Ellodora examined the rock and surrounding area for any sign of a magical influence. From what she could tell, there were no markings or glyphs that suggested spells had been recently cast, nor was there any discernible sign of current magical influence in the area.

Apr 21, 2016 10:22 pm
"Looks fine to me."
Apr 22, 2016 12:03 am
"Alright Ralen, I'll follow you into the cave. Elly, Murril, you two coming?" Raktasha nudges Ralen forward with his quarter staff.
Apr 22, 2016 12:04 am
Ralen begrudgingly enters first.
Apr 22, 2016 12:49 am
Elly brandishes her cello menacingly in front of her, slinging her homemade shoulder strap to the front and weilding her bow askance, ready to summon the power of the strings to her aid. She follows behind Ralen and Raktasha.
Apr 22, 2016 12:54 am
As Ralen entered the cave, he found it difficult to see far into the pitch darkness. A faint breeze blew from within the cave, carrying the faint odor of death. The passage narrowed as it went on in the darkness towards the west, but Ralen was unable to see beyond the initial opening of the natural cave.
Apr 22, 2016 12:56 am
"It's certainly dark in here... anyone have a torch?"
Apr 22, 2016 2:35 am
Muril pulls out a torch from his explorer's pack and sparks it up. "This oughtta help," he said as he handed Ralen the torch.
Apr 22, 2016 2:36 am
Now holding the torch, Ralen continues carefully.
Apr 22, 2016 2:43 am
"Now that stench sure is a foul one. Whatta y'all reckon is causin' it? Smells like ol' William of Nelson's feet after a cow patty stompin' contest, but worse!" Muril continued alongside Ralen down the narrowing cave throughways.
Apr 22, 2016 5:26 am
As the group progressed along the narrowing passageway, they came across the source of the foul stench in the air: the corpse of a human male, sprawled on its back, wearing only leather breeches.

Ralen held the torch aloft, lighting further along the passageway. The tunnel opened up into a cave about 20 feet beyond the corpse.

OOC:
Combat! The corpse gets a surprise attack against Raktasha. Everyone roll for initiative. You will either be in the group that moves before the corpse or the group that moves after the corpse (depending on your initiative order). You can act in any order within your group. If you roll higher than the corpse (and are therefore in the first group to act), you can go ahead and edit in your action into your post. If you roll lower than the corpse (the last group to act) but you don't think what other people do before your turn is going to affect your action, you can go ahead and post it as well. It'll just happen later in the round when your initiative group comes up. If anything drastic changes before your turn, I'll edit things accordingly.

Raktasha is in melee range with the corpse, about 60ft into the tunnel from the entrance of the cave. Ralen and Muril are within 5 feet of the corpse, since they were initially leading the group before Raktasha inspected the corpse. She hits a few more notes before adding with a wry smile, "You know you're a dead ringer for a cat I used to know back home. Smell just a bad too."

OOC:
@13zeros You can advantage if we use the optional flanking rules. The rule is basically, if you are flanking the target (on the opposite side of the target from an ally), then you get advantage on your attacks. The downside is just that when playing without a grid, it can be a little hard to keep track of who's flanking and who isn't, and of course, if the players get advantage for flanking, then so do the enemies. It's really up to you guys if you want to use it or not. I don't mind either way.

Also @laserhamster1, it doesn't really matter because you guys killed the zombie regardless, but for the future, you can add your sneak attack damage (1d6 for level 1 Rogues) to your normal weapon damage when you have an ally in melee with the target you're attacking. Raktasha would have still been in melee with the corpse, so you could have added sneak attack damage, even though you didn't have advantage on the attack. It didn't matter for this battle, but just so you know in the future.

3. Muril

You can go in any order in your group. I'll describe the results of Muril's actions once the others have gone.

Moving around to one of the zombies once one of his companions is in range, Ralen attacks with a backstab.

Rapier Damage Roll - (1d8+3)

Sneak Attack - (1d6)

OOC:
All double on a natural 20, so I'm going to roll the extra 1d8 for the rapier and the 1d6 for the sneak attack for you to see if you kill it. The +1 was a typo, but Ralen did an extra 7 damage from the natural 20.
Using the proximity of his allies as an opening, Ralen ducked behind one of the zombies, sliding his rapier smoothly into its back until it protruded from the front of its abdomen. The zombie took one fruitless step forward, as it tried to yank itself off of the rapier before falling limp and sliding to the ground.
OOC:
Only one zombie left!

Rolls

Ralen's Crit damage - (1d8+1, 1d6)

1d8+1 : (6) + 1 = 7

1d6 : (1) = 1

Apr 26, 2016 8:51 pm
With only one zombie left Raktasha rounds on him and punches whilst holding his quarter staff creating an oversized fist against the zombie. Then quickly turns his wrist to let the staff itself to do damage to the tors of the undead creature.

Rolls

unarmed strike - (1d20+5)

(8) + 5 = 13

unarmed strike damage - (1d4+3)

(3) + 3 = 6

Quarterstaff strike - (1d20+5)

(6) + 5 = 11

Quarterstaff damage - (1d6+3)

(1) + 3 = 4

Apr 26, 2016 8:58 pm
Raktasha's fist and quarterstaff both hit the zombie firmly, as it took a few steps back under the impact. It appeared damaged but was still standing.
Apr 26, 2016 10:12 pm
"Chill, old timer, I've got your back. I've been studying the gnomish style of Fizzbert Tallshortonestalker." She draws her rapier and dagger, flaying her in a high style with the rapier forward and the dagger cocked back ready to pounce in her offhand. "Time to put it to some use against more than just Elven choral folios!"

Move to last zombie making an Attack action, bonus Action to offhand attack.

Elly jabbed the zombie with her rapier, but it barely appeared to phase the zombie, as it lunged into Elly in retaliation.

The zombie missed entirely, however, and Muril took the opportunity to smash it in the back with his morningstar.
OOC:
New round: Raktasha, Elly, and Ralen are up again.

Rolls

Attack - (1d20+3)

(7) + 3 = 10

Apr 26, 2016 11:11 pm
"Whaa... It's Still..."\

Raktasha quickly brings the heavier end of his staff on the undead's head. He then does a quick jab with his free hand.

Rolls

Quarterstaff attack - (1d20+5)

(1) + 5 = 6

Quarterstaff damage - (1d6+3)

(4) + 3 = 7

unarmed bonus action - (1d20+5)

(5) + 5 = 10

Unarmed strike - (1d4+3)

(4) + 3 = 7

Raktasha swung at the zombie, but his quarterstaff went wide. Undeterred, he punched the zombie across the jaw, sending it falling dead to the floor.
OOC:
You are all at the entrance of a round cave with a high ceiling. There are two exits, one to the north and one to the south. There is a flat boulder at the center of the table with dark stains across it's top.
Apr 27, 2016 2:15 am
Ralen checks out the boulder.
Apr 27, 2016 8:13 pm
Ralen examined the boulder in the middle of the room. After a few moments of inspection, it appeared that the dark stains spread across the top was blood.
Apr 27, 2016 8:14 pm
"There's blood on this rock... a sacrifice?"
Apr 27, 2016 8:39 pm
"Blood magic? Muril you read about anything like this? Blood and undead? I don't know friends, this is a peculiar place."

Raktasha on high alert now looks down the corridors with his dark-vision as best as he can and checks the walls for more loose rocks.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+1)

(12) + 1 = 13

Apr 27, 2016 9:40 pm
Raktasha looked around the cave, careful to examine the walls and ceiling. There did not appear to be any loose rocks of hidden zombies. Above the entrance to this cave, he could see a ledge about 10 feet up, where he suspected the zombies had been laying in wait for any people who entered the cave.
Apr 27, 2016 9:46 pm
Elly thinks back to her books and tries to think if there are any known religions or cults in this area that turn to ritual sacrifice.

Rolls

Religion +4 - (1d20+4)

(14) + 4 = 18

Apr 28, 2016 7:57 am
"You guys hang here for a second, I'm going to check out the ledge where those undead came from."

Raktasha gingerly bounces off the fallen boulder and catches the ledge with both arms and a leg.

Rolls

Acrobatic climbing - (1d20+3)

(10) + 3 = 13

Apr 28, 2016 6:22 pm
"Here, old-timer, let me give ya a boost." Muril then assisted Raktasha in getting a better look at this place where the zombies had fallen from.

"Sometimes I can sense strange things if I focus on it. Before you go pokin' your nose up there, let me see if I can detect any more of 'em."
OOC:
Muril uses Divine Sense to detect if there are any undead within 60ft.

Rolls

Athletics to Assist Raktasha - (1d20+2)

(1) + 2 = 3

Apr 28, 2016 8:34 pm
Elly examined the boulder, trying to recall anything suspicious she had heard about the area. She recalled rumors back in Red Larch of suspicious activity among the town elders, but whether or not they had anything to do with this, Elly could not tell.

Raktasha took a running leap, bouncing off the fallen rocks towards the ledge above. He caught the edge of the ledge with his fingers but was not fully up. Muril tried to give him a boost to push him the rest of the way, but he was too short and his arms flailed in the air under Raktasha.

Muril gave up, instead taking a moment to focus and search for any undead creatures remaining around them. After a few moments, he could not detect any undead in the immediate vicinity, but he did not know if there were any undead further in the cave or completely hidden from him.
OOC:
Raktasha, make an athletics check to see if you are able to pull yourself up onto the ledge.

@13zeros Muril does not detect any undead within 60 feet that is not behind total cover.
Apr 29, 2016 6:51 am
"Whaa... that wasn't as good as I hoped."

Rolls

Athletics - (1d20-3)

(5) - 3 = 2

Apr 29, 2016 7:15 am
Raktasha tried to pull himself up onto the ledge, but he felt his fingertips slipping off the edge before he could get a good grasp on it. He fell backwards onto the cave floor, able to roll into to prevent any damage from the fall, but unable to climb onto the ledge.
Apr 29, 2016 7:17 am
"Not as spry as I used to be... any other ideas?"
Apr 30, 2016 5:29 am
OOC:
Any chance I can acrobatics my way up the walls?
Ralen runs near the entrance, attempting to jump off of the nearest wall to the ledge.

Rolls

Acrobatics - (1d20+5)

(13) + 5 = 18

Apr 30, 2016 5:57 am
Ralen ran towards the wall, able to get enough speed and purchase on the wall to make it up the ledge. The ledge ran across the narrow passageway that they had entered the cavern through. On the edge, there was an empty wooden box.
May 1, 2016 5:55 am
"Ralen, see anything? If there's more undead, don't touch it!"
May 1, 2016 12:28 pm
"Yes, a box. Hold on."

Ralen tries to determine anything about what the box used to hold.
May 1, 2016 9:04 pm
Elly moves to check out the exits to the north and south and see if anything distinguishes them from the other.
May 2, 2016 1:06 am
"Here, Ralen," Muril said as he tossed a rope up. "Mebbe this might help ya. Should we come up to join ya, or do ya think you got it on yer own?"

"How's things lookin' over there, Elly?"

Rolls

Rope Toss - (1d20)

(11) = 11

May 2, 2016 1:36 am
"Nothing up here except the box, but you can climb up if you'd like."
OOC:
If anyone wants to come up, Ralen will hold the rope.
May 2, 2016 7:25 pm
Ralen examined the box on top of the ledge, and it appeared to have only a few rocks in it. He suspected that it might have been what the zombies used to throw rocks at them, when a load of rocks fell from above earlier.

Elly moved to the northern exit and could see about 30 feet into the passageway before it appeared to curve to the left. She moved to the southern exit and could see about 60 feet into the darkness before the passageway trailed off.

Ralen caught the rope that Muril threw up and held firm, in case anyone wanted to climb up.
OOC:
Elly, make a Perception check.

Perception +1 - (1d20+1)

(16) + 1 = 17

May 5, 2016 2:30 am
"I'll hang out down here if you don't mind. Unless you need me."
May 5, 2016 5:49 pm
Down the passage to the south, Elly could hear the faint sound of shuffling. The smell of corpses seemed to permeate this entire place, coming from both the north and the south.
May 6, 2016 12:18 am
Elly pokes her head back from the south exit and look to her new friends. "You cats dig crushing these dead heads? I can hear a few more this way." She points down the south hall and a excited smile creep along her face.
May 7, 2016 11:47 pm
Ralen hops down, heading towards the hall.

"I'll lead the way."
May 8, 2016 2:42 pm
Muril looks over his shoulder at Elly and replies, "More dead heads, eh? Well, I didn't come here to not bash things." He gathers up his rope and walks toward Elly.
May 9, 2016 1:02 am
Raktasha follows with his eyes wide watching for anymore surprises. He happily pulls up the tail letting the other three catch any danger.
May 9, 2016 2:59 am
The narrow passage to the south is about 10 feet high in most places, with rough, irregular walls. Protruding spurs on the walls are coated with dried blood.

Eventually the passage widens out into a star-shaped cavern ahead that has many clefts in its walls. Only two, across the cavern, seem large enough to traverse. Three zombies lurch about in the area. One is costumed like a bear, another is dressed as a lady in a frilly dress and thick makeup, and the last is costumed as a jester with jingling bells on its collar and sleeves.
May 11, 2016 5:23 am
"Gasp! Zombies!" Elly says in mock surprise. "I'll be honest, I think I know this play . . . this is the scene where the adventurers crush the woebegone carnival travelers that were ambushed by zombies sending them to their final resting place."

She pulls out her cello and begins with some notes that are straight out of her father's hymnals before bouncing and bending the notes into something a bit more lively. "Let's see which ones can dance. My money is on the skin daddy with the terrible face paint. She looks more convincing as a clown then the jester."

Viscious Mockery at the painted lady zombie. Wis Save DC 13. Damage rolled.

Rolls

VM Damage - (1d4)

(1) = 1

May 11, 2016 3:40 pm
Muril let out a giggle upon hearing Elly's humorous words, and decided to add a few of his own as he lurched closer to the grizzly moving remnants of these travelers. "Maybe I'll just "bear" down on that one over there, Muril said as he moved toward the bear-costumed deadite. He moved forward with his left arm which held a morningstar, parallel to the floor, as if to keep the thing back from him if need be, while he started swinging his flail overhead as he moved closer, finally swinging it toward the head of the nasty thing.

May 14, 2016 4:56 am
Seeing the intruders, the three zombies all lurched forward, as if in some strange play. When they got close, they all attempted to slam into the group, two at Ralen who was in the lead and one at Elly. The first zombie misses Ralen entirely, but the distraction is enough to let the second zombie slam into him. A third zombie hit Elly solidly before she could react.
OOC:
