You also don't have Elmo at the moment as he went to go see about a lady friend and said he wouldn't be back for about a week or so, unless you plan on waiting for him to return to Hommlet.

Well... that’s a long time for a ruin to be repopulated. Best strike out before anything slithers back in there. Though maybe go carefully.

So we got to town one evening, spent the next full day in town, and are ready to head out the following morning? I'm ready to kick more butts!

But also, if the potion is ready from Jaroo (soon to be nicknamed Ja Rool for how cool he's been), Eltrezar would pick that up.

Would it be worth hiring a couple sword goons to up our survivability? I am loathe to split the xp but this module is no joke. Each of us is always one hit away from death.

Hiring retainers is certainly an option. There is usually one or two that will hang around the tavern looking for work. I believe that the owners of the Trading Post mentioned that the big silent guard that stands around guarding the place was available for hire.
There's certainly places in Hommlet where you can a aquire retainers of equal or lower level as your PCs.

Hrmph! "I don't see the problem with maintaining a smaller group, and just replacing the warriors as they fall. As long as they can keep me protected, I'd prefer the larger amount of XP."

But more seriously, I'm fine with hiring a warrior. Probably not two. Just someone expendable.

If that's the direction you want to go, we can go with that. Are we looking to drum up retainers at the Tavern? The Militia? The intimidating man at the Trading Post that doesn't talk much? I have a retainer fee in mind for each location.

If you wish to hire a retainer send a PC to the location you wich and make an offer. This could be a percentage of loot earned, at flat fee, both, neither, etc.). You then make a 2d6 roll modified by your PC's Charisma Modifier, further modified by how close your offer was to the retainer fee I have in mind for the potential recruit, and we look at the outcome on the Retainer Hiring Reactions table.

Everyone knows that dark and brooding individuals have a higher chance of being great warriors, but also an equal chance at betraying the party at an inopportune moment (not that there is an opportune moment to be betrayed). I vote Tall, Dark, and Handsome! But I also welcome the input of my own hirelings, such as Gilly and Mal.

Gilly will speak with the gruff fellow at the trading post while she’s there to buy the shield. She’ll offer him 10% of what we find out there! Seeing as the heavy lifting has been done the day previous. Should be an easy 10% for him.

Gilly makes an effort to hire the services of the Man-at-Arms of the Trading Post but gets nowhere with the silent man himself. She makes more headway when the shopkeepers overhear the one-sided discussion. After realizing that even the man's services seem to need to be negotiated through the shopkeepers, Gilly makes an offer, counter-offered by Rannos, counter-offered by Gilly, counter-offered by Gremag, countered again by Gilly, which is renegotiated by both the shop owners a third time. Throughout this back and forth the three of them come to a final offer.
Perhaps the men have an agreement already, or perhaps they have a means of communicating Gilly is not aware of, but without speaking a single word on his own behalf, it appears the silent man is willing to work for 10% of any loot brought forth from and excursion to and from the Moathouse ruins and dungeon, so long as the party is willing to purchase a chainmail waistcoat him. Gilly would recall that, coincidence or not, a set of chainmail armor was the same terms Elmo requested in exchange for his services.

Sensing a scam in town, Gilly bristles a bit.

"If I was in the business of charitable donations, I’d have gone to see the priests or the druid. Are you fit to be hired or not?

Sword. Shield. Shoes. Armor.

You know... basic gear?"
Apr 4, 2021 6:11 pm
Rannos Davl, the shorter, slower, fatter of the two men listens to Gilly patiently before replying in his slow drawling manner. "Ah, but you see , little one... Our associate here is fit to be hired to act as personal security for our Trading Post at the moment. Sword? But of course! Even a longbow as well... Shield? Not so much our associate's style, nor likely to be needed most days. And chainmail? Again, it would be quite uncomfortable to stand in mail every day when leather will be sufficient most days...
"But, my little friend... This village is small and word travels fast. Do not think we haven't heard of the loss of two of your own companions on your first venture to that useless pile of rubble out there yesterday. And if word be true, both of those were dragged back to our village wearing heavy plate. Why you yourself, it is told, wandered back to this village looking as if Death himself had already claimed you for his own, and what do you wear? But mere leathers as well. And I can assure you, young halfling, our associate, while keen with sword and bow, is not nearly so hardy as the likes of you. I doubt even the mightiest man could have survived the wounds you seem to have took in battle and lived to return to our Trading Post with goods to sell.
"Our associate is not asking for heavy plate, despite evidence that would suggest it likely necessary. He's merely asking that you meet him halfway, and furnish him with some chainmail. But to venture forth in leather... Pfft! Only a fool or a halfling as hardy and lucky as yourself would return to that place in leather. I'm sure you understand..."

I'm assuming that Eltrezar is dealing with Jaroo while Gilly is negotiating with the worst warrior around.

I did scroll back, and it looks like chain was 50gp for Elmo.

@KCC69 and cowleyc: The shopkeepers are willing to sell your party chain shirt for 40GP, most likely because they know it's going to their associate.
@Eltrezar: Meeting with Jaroo, the druid hands over the potion that was requested, and asks if he can get anything else started for him over the next few days.

Ahrm! "For now, we could use some potions to allow us to detect danger ahead. Exploring the moathouse, it seems that many nasty creatures have been lying in wait."
OOC:
What all can we get in the form of potions? Is it spells that target the drinker, or any spell? Cause I might try to start getting creative here.

Gilly wrinkles her nose and passes over the 40 gold.

He needn’t think he’s getting to keep that. I’ll have it off his back as soon as we step back into the village. Or I’ll take it out of his cut...

"Fine. We’ll be setting out shortly. We’ll pass by and gather your stuff as we leave..." Gilly says shortly, closing the matter. She didn’t take to the flattery and ignores it.

"Ah, very good little warrior! Our associate will be fitted and ready to travel as soon as you and your companions are in need of him! No need to buy him a horse; we'll provide him with one of our own to ride, courtesy of the trading post."

Okay so Eltrezar is now in possession of (1)Potion of Protection from Poison. You can request any divine spells available to the Druid class to have prepared for you, though, you may only make this request once per week. He'll prepare 1d4 spells, and it will take 1d4 days to be finished. Whether those spells come in the form of scrolls or potions depends on the nature of the spell itself, what he has time to prepare, and what method of preparation is most convenient for him. In this particular case, this is "Week 1" and since he had 1 potion ready after a single day, we'll say that he had already brewed it earlier, and so he is offering to prep another order for you, but it will still be 1d4 spells in 1d4 days to finish (ACTUALLY, SEE BELOW). After this, he can only take requests once per week from the party; he is a busy druid with many Druidey things to attend to, and not the party's personal alchemist.

OOC:
Actually, 1d4 spells of your choosing is way too powerful. I can see this quickly becoming a situation where you guys start stacking up on all the high-level magics real quick. So I'm changing Jaroo's terms. You can order up to 5 points worth of potions or scrolls per week in exchange for a donation (whatever you think the value of the donation is is up to you). The Level of the spell being prepared is equal to how many points it costs. So in 1 week you could order (5) 1st Level Spells, or (1) 5th Level Spell, or (1) 3rd Level Spell and (2) 1st Level Spells, etc... It will still take 1d4 days for everything to be prepared.
Yes, I have altered the deal; pray I don't alter it any further. Besides, you're getting free potions and scrolls... That's plenty generous by itself.
