Order of Scribes
Magic of the book, that is what many folk call wizardry. The name is apt, given how much time wizards spend poring over tomes and penning theories about the nature of magic. It is rare to see wizards traveling without books and scrolls sprouting from their bags, and a wizard would go to great lengths to plumb an archive of ancient knowledge.
Among wizards, the Order of Scribes is the most bookish. It takes many forms in different worlds, but its primary mission is the same everywhere: recording magical discoveries so that wizardry can flourish. And while all wizards value spell books, a wizard in the Order of Scribes magically awakens their book, turning it into a trusted companion. All wizards study books, but a wizardly scribe talks to theirs!
It should be noted though that wizards of the Order of Scribes cannot cast the Find Familiar spell as they already have a Familiar in the form of a magical quill and spell book.
[ +- ] Wizardly Quill
By 2nd level the Wizard has created a Magical Quill, this Magical Quill can be conjured into a free hand at will. Further this Magical Quill has the following properties:
• The Magical Quill disappears when dismissed or if the one that conjured it is rendered unconscious or dies.
• The Quill stores ink of a single type or multiple types and then when written with, it produces the desired type of ink in a color of the user's choice upon the writing surface.
• When using the Magical Quill to transcribe a spell into a spell book the time required to transcribe is reduced to 33 minutes per spell level.
• The user can, as a Bonus Action, erase anything they wrote with the Magical Quill if they wave the feathered end over the text provided that text is within normal reach.
[ +- ] Awakened Spell Book
Also by 2nd level the Wizard transforms their spell book into their first Magical Awakened Spell Book, this Magical Awakened Spell Book can be conjured into a free hand once per Long Rest. Further when this Magical Awakened Spell Book is being held with the wizards hand the wizard gains the following initial benefits:
• The Magical Awakened Spellbook disappears when dismissed as a Free Action or if the one that conjured it is rendered unconscious or dies.
• The Wizard can use the book as a Spell Casting Focus for their wizard spells.
• When casting a wizard spell contained within the book that has a casting time of 1 Action, the wizard can choose to cast it using 1 Bonus Action. They can do this once per Spell Casting Ability and regain one expended use after completing a Short Rest.
• When casting a wizard spell contained within the book, the wizard can cast it as a ritual even if it does not have the ritual tag. Once this benefit is used, it cannot be used again until the wizard finishes a Long Rest.
• The character can add extra pages to their Magical Awakened Spell Book. The character must obtain very refine paper costing 2gp per sheet.
If the book is ever destroyed or the wizard wants to craft a new one, the wizard can replace the book but must make a new one. To do this the wizard starts with a mundane Spell Book and transcribes whatever spells they can and choose to into it per the normal guidelines of spell transcription. Once they have transcribed 2 spell levels per level of the wizard into this book they can then go through the process of transforming it into a magically awakened one. The process of awakening a new Spell Book costs a minimum 30gp in material components per spell level contained within the book. And requires 7 consecutive days of incantations taking a minimum of 7 hours each day. However, it should be noted that a wizard can at this time choose to create an Enhanced Spell Book prior to awakening it. These enhancements are left up to the player and the GM to determine what is wanted and allowable.
[ +- ] Melded Minds
At 6th level, the wizard can, while their Magical Awakened Spell Book is in hand and as a Bonus Action, meld their mind with that of their Magical Awakened Spell Book. They can only due this once per Short Rest and the melding lasts for 10 minutes per wizard level or until rendered unconscious by some means. When they do this certain extra abilities are gained as follows:
• The Magical Awakened Spell Book sheds dim light in a 10-foot radius.
• The wizard gains Dark Vision out to 60 feet.
• The wizard gains Expertise in the Arcana skill.
• The wizard may designate their Magical Awakened Spell Book to maintain a Concentration spell that they have cast. This frees the wizard to cast other spells including other spells that require Concentration. The book can only maintain one Concentration spell at a time and if designated to maintain another Concentration spell it loses any current Concentration spell it may be maintaining.
• The wizard gains Advantage on any Saves made against Enchantment spells due to their dual mindedness.
[ +- ] Master Scrivener
At 10th level, after finishing a long rest, the wizard can create one magic scroll from a spell contained within their Magical Awakened Spell Book they are holding in hand by using their Magical Quill, provided it contains the necessary ink. The chosen spell must be of no more than 4 levels less than their maximum castable spell level, have a casting time of 1 Action, and they must have an available spell slot of the level they want the spell to be cast at (maximum 2 levels higher than the spell's level) that they are scribing onto the scroll. The scroll is unintelligible to anyone else and cannot be deciphered, and the
spell vanishes from the scroll once it is cast. The character may only have one of these scrolls per Spell Casting Ability, if creating a new scroll exceeds this limit the oldest scroll's spell vanishes.
The character is also adept at crafting regular spell scrolls, which are described in the treasure chapter of the DMG page 129. If the spell is contained within the Melded Minds Magical Awakened Spell Book and the Magical Quill is used, the wizard can craft a scroll as if two individuals were working upon the same scroll at the same time. Allowing them to contribute 50gp worth of effort for each day spent crafting the scroll. They must of course supply twice the material components and twice the spell slots required for creating that scroll.
[ +- ] One with the Word
At 14th level, the wizard's connection to their Magical Awakened Spell Book has become so profound that their mind has become entwined with it. They can perform the Melded Minds as a Free Action and it lasts twice as long as normal. Further while Melded Minds is active the following properties are gained:
• The Dark Vision extends out an additional 60 feet to 120 feet.
• The time it takes to normally transcribe a spell is now reduced to 9 minutes per spell level.
• The character gains Advantage on any Intelligence(Investigation) checks that they make to decipher a spell.
• The character gains Advantage on all Intelligence(Arcana) checks they make.
• When using the Master Scriviner ability to craft a regular spell scroll the character gains the benefit of two individuals working upon the same scroll at the same time but only needs the regular amount of material components and spell slots required for one person crafting that scroll thus effectively halving not only the time but the cost.
