Qralloq says:
"Your miners, all of my children are in grave danger. You are the ones that answered my call. Will you listen to my plea?"

To Emmett, it responds, "Tombstone Redoubt. A relic, an anchor, a crossroads."
Emmett is looks flabbergasted, clearly becoming frustrated at his lack of control and understanding of the situation.

"That's not an anchor, I've seen an anchor. That's...a funny-lookin' moon or somethin'! Look, I'll hear you out, but you better have some better explanation for what's goin' on and where we just went to!"

The room does appear to have several exits, although they are closed and may in fact simply be wall. They aren't hinged, but may slide.

Cooper gestures with a head bob to the viewscreen. "That is your world. We are high above it, higher than the birds or the clouds. Your land is on the left side of the planet, about to disappear from view."

He turns back to you. "I could tell you stories. My interactions with my children has lead me to believe this is the case. In the present time I have no such luxury. I will be blunt. The portal you came through operates from this station. It allows the instanteous transport between the mine and the mining asteroid Geiger-196557A. There, the miners of Cooperstown mine the high yield ore and return through the portal back to the mine. The equipment on this station can be used so that the portal can be designated to transport to other locations, such as here. However, in the previous night in Cooperstown, the portal was activated by some other means. A series of rapid interactions occurred, and several creatures entered the mine and this station. I have traced the location of the creatures home, and I need someone to block their access. I cannot leave this station, as I am a part of it."

He pauses to let that digest or for questions.

"Uh-huh. Did those ‘creatures’ have many legs, two poisonous tails and a whole lot of ugly?" Lyle asks.
Apr 30, 2021 11:30 pm
"You have described them accurately. One of them managed to damage my leg with its tail, which will take time for me to repair."

Turana remained silent at first, overwhelmed with everything she saw, so many to see and analyze all of the sudden, then there was this other being claiming that we were his children, or hers, who knew, her curiosity augmented with each piece of new information that she struggled to grasp, she did not how to start to answer all of the questions in her mind. maybe ask that being.. last time someone claimed to treat her as a daughter did actually inflict pain upon her as a mean of teaching her something. but she was not alone this time.. so she went ahead and asked ."Cooper, if I may, can you tell us in which sense are we your children? We could use to know more about you and the creatures, not to mention the ones who fell under the attack of this nasty things"

"Your town Cooperstown was named for me, for my role in allowing it to thrive and flourish through the management of the portal. In many ways I am the parent of the town. It is a metaphor only, as I am a mechanical construct and incapable of biological procreation. The creatures and the people are outside of my experience. It is my wish to understand them better, too."
May 1, 2021 12:25 pm
"How can we block access.to the creatures? And can we discover why this has happened in the first place? You said the portal was activated by some other means. Do you know how or by whom?"
May 1, 2021 12:45 pm
"What is there to understand about those... beasts? When we came upon one it was stripping the flesh from a... person? It attacked on sight. They seem to understand prey well enough, but I doubt there is reasoning with them. What were they devouring? Strange, manlike people with soft, slug skin? They seem more the kind to talk to, Cooper."

To Y'breq, it answers, "Collapse the tunnel perhaps? I would prefer if we knew what else was there before doing so. There could be opportunities if the quintpods are a limited threat."

To Lyle, it adds, "We don't know what we don't know. You are correct that initial signs point to a dangerous and aggressive species. The truth is often more nuanced -- do not take any chances, but find out what you can. As to the people, they too may be equally a threat, scouts for an invading force, or they may be peaceful people caught by circumstances and flung across the world to die in the dark. Our response should be based on sound evidence rather than first impressions."

"I Agree, based on the information provided by the Cooper this station should be able to send us to the creature's source somehow, and hopefully we can learn as much as we can about the place before we have to face too many dangers"

Emmett's opinion of the strange, likely ancient creature in front of him is mixed. On the one hand, he was never a huge fan of shadowy authority. He'd had enough of unknown actors pulling strings back in his soldiering days, and thought it was behind him. On the other hand, it was good to see there was some sort of benevolent (or so he hoped) authority behind the decision to open the tunnel. The foreman's answers didn't seem complete enough for Emmett to accept.

Emmett stands up straight and nods at the creature. "Alright there, Coop, it sounds straightforward enough. I mean, straightforward for this completely insane situation we're caught in." He rubs the side of his face with his good hand.

"In the end, it sounds like someone planned this thing. Any idea who or what would've wanted you to come to harm? Oh, and since we've got you here, we found this on one of the bodies. Ever seen anythin' like it, or what we might use it for?" He holds out the unidentified numenera, hoping the being might have more knowledge of it than he does.

A blue light shines from the technological being and analyses the device. "It is a transportation stabilizing device. Activating it will send information back to another device, and it will also make it easier for a teleportation from that other device to its location to succeed."
May 2, 2021 7:54 pm
Emmett looks thoughtful for a moment, tossing the compact device up and catching it as it falls. There's very little sticking out from its metallic surface, just a few tightly wound wires around one corner and a seam where it might come apart with the proper tools. It feels like there's something rattling inside, affecting how it spins in the air.

"Hmm. That makes it sound like there's more than one of them little things out there. Bound to be, right? I gotta wonder who's got it and what they sent those odd lookin' folks out for in the first place. Think there's any way to tell, Coop?"

He shakes it gently, holding it to the side of his head.
OOC:
I haven't had you as a DM before, do you mind little bits of invention being inserted into a scene by your players? I don't know anything about the device, just throwing stuff out there to make it a little more real.

OOC:
I really love it when players get inventive. Have at it. I'll push back only if what you propose won't work with what I'm planning.
"I cannot say. By my estimation, there is a material chance that the other device connected to that one is near the other side of the portal they came through. I should point out that there are four separate new portals linked. The archway was cycling through them, although for the moment I have stabilized it to act as normal and stay focussed on the mine. The interference that you see may indicate that they are trying to activate it once more from the other side."

"So- first we check out where the 'quintpods' are coming from, then decide whether or not we need to collapse the tunnel?" Lyle says, wondering how many of those things they'll run into. They could probably fight them one at a time well enough... but if they were to swarm the group they would be in serious trouble. "Sorry about your leg, Cooper. Are you able to fix that yourself? Should we look out for parts?" Whatever Cooper was, Lyle was pretty sure he meant them no harm. "Also, I found this 'shooter' on one of the bodies.. could you tell me anything about it?"
OOC:
I was thinking ot using my Flex Skill ability to focus on 'Initiative' for the day. How does that actually affect my Initiative roll? Does it get eased by a step? The list of skills in the book is pretty bare bones, are you open to alternate/additional skills?. Also, how does resting work? I'm not sure if we can rest up anytime or if we need a certain amount of time, etc.
May 2, 2021 11:06 pm
Cooper says that the repairs are well under way and he will not require assistance.

It cannot tell you anything more about the shooter. It tells you that it is a focussed energy weapon, whatever that means.
OOC:
Initiative should be fine. Initiative rolls are you trying to beat a target difficulty. For the quintpods, that's three, so you would need a 9+. The skill gives you an asset on the roll, decreasing the roll one step to difficulty 2 so you would need to roll 6+ to act before them.

The rulebook is clear that the sample skills are only samples, and are not meant to be exhaustive. Coming up with other skills is entirely appropriate.

Resting is handled through Recovery rolls, which are listed on your character sheet as four check boxes. One takes 1 round, another 10 minutes, then 1 hour and then 10 hours. Your Recovery rolls replenish after a 10 hour rest. Each takes the indicated time (uninterrupted) to use, and replenishes 1d6+1 points for you to allocate between your pools. You don't need to use them in that order -- I sometimes try and leave the 1 round one for emergencies, for example.

Thank you!

Y'breq looks around the space in wonder while the others are talking. She was never a very good conversationalist, often working by herself, deep in thought and sometimes the guts of a machine. She was nervous and excited at the prospect of exploring some new remote location, her mind filled with ideas and hopes and dreams. What she did not care for were the creatures that were fairly resistant to her only weapon. She'd definitely have to remedy that after this job was finished.

"Everybody almost ready then?"

nezzeraj says:
"Everybody almost ready then?"
Emmett turns to Y'breq. "Yeah, I s'pose so. Whatever the skist these things are, they aren't gonna go and kill themselves for us. But..." He turns back to Cooper. "Don't take this to mean I'm trustin' you. Nobody ever did anythin' out of pure altruistic integrity, and that includes you. I'd like to know what you're gettin' out of bringin' a whole town of people up from nothin'. Then we'll see about wreckin' your new friends."
OOC:
Emmett is ready to roll after that last question is answered.
