You can feel that the summer is coming to an end. Although it is still warm during the day, the nights are beginning to become quite cool. As you sit on deck of the 'Jolly Wanderer' you can watch the sun setting over the swampy area to your right.
The deck is filled with crates, presumably filled with supplies for the expedition.
Captain Forsberg, a tall and slender man in a dark blue jacket, is barking some orders at the crew. Whilst the crew hurries to fulfill his orders as fast as possible, the passengers sit on deck and talk about what they are to expect from the expedition.
Heard there's been some trouble with 'e locals. a woman with an eyepatch and a bow on her back remarks. You see the passengers? Most of them ain't scholars and workers. They're guards and scouts. I tell ya we're gonna have to shed a bit o' blood after we arrive.
A man in blue robes takes a big gulp from his tankard and says Or there aren't enough workers available so they enlisted strong fighters. If you can swing a sword, you can swing a shovel.
Hmmpf... I doubt that. You always find someone who is willing to dig around without setting any ambitious demands. But finding someone who is willing to grab a sword and defend himself... that's not so easy to find and not so easy to pay.
The woman nods at the other passengers. Wadda you think? Is this job gonna be a piece of cake or a bloody mess?
The Jolly Wanderer is a typical example of a river trading boat that is commonly used by The Four Cities.
100 feet long, 30 feet wide and one deck deep.
If the weather allows for it crew and passengers are always on deck as the space below deck is pretty cramped.
Usually the ships are carried by the current when traveling downriver. For the upriver direction there's a sail and, if needed, large oars on board
As rumours go those can be quite inaccurate but they are circulating among the people of The Four Cities and so your character may have picked one of them up
-The expedition found something great and needs more people to secure the treasures that were found
-The exploration of the ruins is only a secondary objective to the whole mission. In reality Bridgeton wants to secure an outpost to advance trade with other cities down the river
-A tribe of orcs, goblins, or any other species is attacking the expedition's camp and it needs assistance to fend off the attackers
-Everything is fine at the camp and they just need more people and supplies to further the exploration of the ruins
