Prologue: The Jolly Wanderer

Apr 18, 2021 7:39 pm
You can feel that the summer is coming to an end. Although it is still warm during the day, the nights are beginning to become quite cool. As you sit on deck of the 'Jolly Wanderer' you can watch the sun setting over the swampy area to your right.

The deck is filled with crates, presumably filled with supplies for the expedition.

Captain Forsberg, a tall and slender man in a dark blue jacket, is barking some orders at the crew. Whilst the crew hurries to fulfill his orders as fast as possible, the passengers sit on deck and talk about what they are to expect from the expedition.

Heard there's been some trouble with 'e locals. a woman with an eyepatch and a bow on her back remarks. You see the passengers? Most of them ain't scholars and workers. They're guards and scouts. I tell ya we're gonna have to shed a bit o' blood after we arrive.

A man in blue robes takes a big gulp from his tankard and says Or there aren't enough workers available so they enlisted strong fighters. If you can swing a sword, you can swing a shovel.

Hmmpf... I doubt that. You always find someone who is willing to dig around without setting any ambitious demands. But finding someone who is willing to grab a sword and defend himself... that's not so easy to find and not so easy to pay.
The woman nods at the other passengers. Wadda you think? Is this job gonna be a piece of cake or a bloody mess?

Sitting towards the center of the ship upon the deck with at list two crates as close to her as possible smoking a pipe, Solra responds in an irritable tone, "I imagine it is going to be what it is going to be, and speculation, be it negative or positive, will simply cloud things and create inaccurate perceptions when it actually does become what it will become. So just leave it be."

Rhys leans upon the railing of the boat, watching the sunset. Snatches of conversation from the crew and his fellow passengers float by but he pays it no heed. His thoughts are only on the ruins that lay ahead, and of the so-called treasures which might contain what he has been seeking for so long. Eventually, he has his fill and turns to face the others - his gaze sweeps across the people here, a judgemental cast to his face as he ponders the question.

"A job's a job. Doesn't matter what it's gonna be. You take that contract," he folds his arms across his chest. "You do your duty."

It should be a simple job Garith says as he checks the contents of his backpack to make sure he hasn’t forgotten anything. Unless the rumors that the camp been attacked are true, but I never put much faith in rumorshe said closing his backpack.

Annika's fine clothes and noble bearing make her look very out of place among the rough-and-ready majority of the boat's passengers. Despite this, she doesn't look at all uncomfortable in their company as she sits perched on a crate, watching the view drift by.

"Sounds like nobody really knows what we're in for," she observes. "How exciting."
Apr 27, 2021 12:49 pm
Sitting crosslegged near his dwarven companion, the armored half-orc busied himself with a fish hook, sharpening it to a fine point against the head of a handaxe as he hummed a cheerful little ditty. His eyes wandered as the conversation began to shift, gauging the folk aboard the Jolly Wanderer as they expressed their thoughts on the matter. They certainly were quite the assembly.

"That's part of the real mystery, isn't it? Hopefully it's nothing serious, but I'm not one to count my chickens before they hatch. I just hope nothing's happened to the folks out there," the warrior responded in kind, gingerly placing the sharpened hook back into the tackle box and stuffing it back into his pack. As Raskell stood, his chainmail jangling slightly as he did so, it was plain just how tall the half-orc was as he returned his axe to he belt. Though he seemed amicable enough, his body language betrayed some military experience and the danger that came with it.

"I'm Raskell, by the by. Raskell Thornwood," greeted the half-orc, casting a cordial smile towards the brave souls gathered aboard the deck of the Jolly Wanderer before motioning his hand gently towards the dwarf taking to her pipe. "And this is my dearest friend, Solra. Seems we're all in the same boat, so to speak."
Apr 27, 2021 1:11 pm
"Annika... just Annika for now. Delighted to meet you."
Apr 27, 2021 1:35 pm
Rhys offers a nod by way of greetings. "You all reckon there's been an attack? That's not what they told me."

Being without his hand crossbow, which is safely secured below with his other belongings, makes his hand itch something terrible. The rumours of an attack hardly helps.
Apr 27, 2021 2:17 pm
"I haven't heard anything at all. I'm not even sure why I'm here, to be perfectly honest - sometimes you just have to go where the journey takes you. So to pass the time, why don't you all share what you've heard about wherever it is we're going?"
Apr 27, 2021 2:36 pm
"Hmm." He's reluctant to reveal his real reasons, but it can't hurt to divulge what he has been hired for.

"A recruiter approached me in Bridgeton. Says the fancy folks down by the ruins need a strongarm or two." At this, he shoots a meaningful glance at the half-orc.

Rhys shrugs, apparently unconcerned with the finer details. "The pay sounded good."

"Likewise, Annika," Raskell replied, then returned his attention to the group at large.

"This guy's got the right of it. Ancient ruins and folk in need of protection, accompanied by an opportunity for fairly-earned coin," explained the half-orc, returning the warrior's glance with a nod of his own as he gave the hilt of his sword an absentminded light tap with his finger.

"Everything else has been hearsay as far as I can guess; even the fellow who hired me was pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing. From what I've heard, goblins and kobolds and other ilk have been giving them issue. Then again, I also heard everything's peachy, and they're just waiting on folk like us to secure the area before they start digging into the ruins while they sit around sipping wine. Like Solra said, I wager we won't know for certain till' we get there."
Apr 27, 2021 3:13 pm
"The rumors about the attack may be true," The Half-elf said rising to this feet, "but I've also heard that everything is fine at the camp." He tucks a dagger in his belt between two pouches one of which is filled with cross-bow bolts. "My name is Garith Ianzeiors, by the way, nice to meet you all."
Apr 27, 2021 3:56 pm
Solra sits unpleased about the situation and just biding her time. Truth be told she will be very happy to get off this water bound disaster waiting to happen and get her feet back on solid ground, no matter where that ends up being. In the meantime she does her best to relax as best she can and tries to focus on smoking her pipe.

M' name's Rada. Glad to meet you all. Was hired in Bridgeton too. I'm more of a scout but I'm also able to keep up for myself in a fight just like you all. Rada glances at Annika Well...like most of you at least...

But that probably won't be necessary... While it's always good to be cautious I doubt that we will face any serious threats beside the occasional wild animal The man in the blue robes remarks
As the sun is beginning to set, the crew is hanging lanterns on the rigging and railings. The additional light reveals the man to be an elf
I am Phann. A chronist, hired by the city of Bridgeton to write about the findings in the ruins, that go by the name of Surbanipal by the way. I doubt that they'd send chronists there if active fighting is to be expected.
Scrol sent a note to DeJoker
Rada spits on the ground
You're a damn idealist. Look 'ere. She collects a few mugs and groups them on a crate.

That mug here is the river, this over here is the beautiful swamp to our right and this one is represents the wooded hills farther to the south and west. And riiiight here in the middle are the ruins.
The swamp's treacherous, crawling with animals and other even more unpleasant folks, the hills are occupied by monsters big n' small and the river cuts off any chance of orderly retreat to the east. If you think that isn't an invitation for trouble you haven't learned from your precious chronicles.

Phann was quite calm the whole time but seems to become increasingly agitated. You know what! If you are that convinced that there is trouble you're certainly ready to take a bet He pulls a gold coin from his pocket and smashes it on the crate where Rada put the mugs
I bet you one gold coin that the worst we'll face are wild animals and nothing more.

Ha! Rada replies Well you're gonna get in trouble AND lose money Rada rummages in her backpack and adds a gold coin of her own.
Then she turns to the others. What about ya'll. You side with Mr. Fancy-Robes-Dusty-From-Scrolls or someone with a bit more sense of the real world...?
Apr 27, 2021 9:59 pm
Scratching the stubble of his chin, Raskell gave some genuine consideration to the wager. There's always some truth to rumors, right? Maybe Rada was on to something. Who hires a band of adventurers and explorers to deal with bears and boars? He hoped Rada was wrong, but if she wasn't then a little extra coin wouldn't hurt. Fishing out his purse, the half-orc peered inside at its contents, his face curling into a look of miserly disappointment. Taking a lone gold coin from the leather purse, the half-orc eyed it hard, moving it from one finger to another as he weighed his choice.

"Sorry, friend. While I hope it's just some mangy beasts out in the woods, I'm with Rada on this one," Raskell said, plunking his own coin into the pot with a distinct clink as it joined the others. "If someone's going to hire adventurers, my gut tells me there's something more dangerous out there beyond wolves and bears to be concerned about."
Apr 27, 2021 11:55 pm
Garith stood silently for a moment as the other passengers talked, he’d signed on for the chance to explore the ruins. He still hoped that the rumors of the attacks were false, but he recalled the man who recruited him had been evasive about answering questions. Odds were that Rada was right about them heading into trouble. The Half-elf takes out a single gold coin "I always hope for the best, but this time I’m on the side of the one with a bit more sense of the world." He says as he drops his coin into the pot.

Solra disgustedly says, "Jeesh Raskell seriously do I need to start advising you on using your money wisely, you should take that coin and put it back into your pouch. I mean seriously what are you going to get a third of a gold coin for risking a full gold coin?" She briefly closes her eyes and rubs here forehead with her fingers. Then she sarcastically continues with, "As for my two bits worth on this, which is worth way more than all this immaturity being displayed, I said let it be. However... I am willing to do you all a favor. I will hold on to those coins as I am sure I can put them to a much better use than this childish endeavor by supposed adults, deal?" She looks at the two that started all of this and then says, "Besides if I had to put some actual thought into this I would say you two are in cahoots and are running a con, preying on good folk for petty returns as that is the only thing that would make this inane childishness make any sense."

Running a hand through his hair sheepishly, he knew Solra was right. He really did need to pinch his coppers. Still, the last thing the crew of the Jolly Wanderer needed though was strife amongst the new employees aboard it before the job even began.

{"Sorry. You're right. But please, let's not start any trouble. These are the people we'll need to work with,"} the half-orc replied in Dwarven, hoping if nothing else to prevent further accusations from being hurled.

"Apologies. Solra's right though. I really ought to be more frugal with my coin," Raskell laughed awkwardly, giving his companion a lingering look. "She means well. Honest."

Looking to change the subject, Raskell turned his attention back to Rada. "You do seem pretty keen on the goings-on out here though, Rada. Been out this way a spell or two?" he inquired genially, crossing his arms as he leaned against one of the nearby crates for comfort.

"Surbanipal..." he whispers, testing how it rolls off the tongue. Unlike some of his previous ventures, this one has the good courtesy to remain pronounceable.

"Phann, some of us ain't so well-educated. Name got a specific meaning?" he asks, pointedly ignoring the current round of betting. As the saying goes - a fool and his gold are soon parted. By his reckoning, the boat has plenty of fools.

A potential hint to the origins of the ruin - well, now. That's priceless especially seeing how the chronist seems to be easily swayed by his emotions. Here's a man that he intends to spend some time with during the journey, mining the few bits of knowledge until it hits bedrock.

If it's gold the chronist wants, Rhys will spend no mean amount of coins to further his ambitions.

As for the others, from what he gathers - Raskell might be handy in a pinch, Solra enjoys her pipe and complainin', Garith reveals little so he can't get a bead on him, and Annika even less.

"Ooh, great question. And if you know the name, then you must have some sense of the history of the place." Annika leans forward, eyes bright with anticipation. "Phann, tell us everything."

As the sun inches ever so closer to the reeds and the murky water of the swamps on the right side of river Galfer, Firebird emerges from below the deck, summoned by the sunset and sounds of lively conversation between other passengers. Having spent a good amount of daytime lounging back in her tiny but private cabin, the dancer now comes to taste the questionably fresh air of the evening and entertain herself by something other than playing cards and practicing her music. It was delightful to have a bit of rest on this journey, but she missed the adoration and praise of her public - perhaps, she might yet find an audience on this ship, even if serious faces and sharp blades would suggest otherwise.

Making her way up the narrow stairs with all the grace of a natural dancer, Melianne Windstride reaches the deck and gives a sweeping look to the gathered public, her eyes glinting with mischief behind her dark blue locks as Firebird considers which target she shall choose first. Her gaze pauses on the captain for a long moment, and the woman watches him with interest, intrigued by the goings of the ship and his fashionable jacket. However, she doesn't approach him - yet, - instead opting to flutter into the conversation happening nearby, confidently striding towards Rhys.

"A lovely evening, isn't it?" She slides herself closely to his personal space, tilting her head and batting her eyelashes at the man, a playful smile on her lips. The decorative beads woven into Melianne's hair clink against each other at the movement, and many of golden coins attached to her waist join in this improvised chorus when she leans closer. "No wonder so many of us have gathered here to talk and dine, as I see. Say, sir, did I miss anything curious?" She twirls in place slowly, but nevertheless dramatically, and clasps her hands together. "It seems like nothing happens upon the waves of this river, and I earn for the moment I can step on the solid ground again."

Completely oblivious to the discussion she is actively interrupting, Firebird then cheerfully inspect everyone else gathered around, taking the stock of potential conversation companions should the handsome man in the immediate vicinity refuse to chat with her. She beams at anyone who catches her eyes, while absent-mindely playing with a silk scarf wrapped around her middle, and displaying absolute lack of concern for any rumors or speculations of dangers ahead.
Apr 29, 2021 2:27 am
Rhys stills his breath as she approaches. His eyes narrow slightly with a challenging glare at the woman and for those with keener sight - his folded arms clench a smidge tighter. The decorative beads remind him of the kind his brother used to make, and the memory is a painful one.

He exhales slowly in an attempt to gain control before replying.

"Got some betting going on if you're so inclined," he says, jutting his chin toward Phann and Rada. "Waiting on some answers about what lays ahead."

Seems he left out one more to keep an eye on. The boat sure had some strange types.
Apr 29, 2021 5:50 am
Keenly invested in how Rada seemed so insightful about the goings-on surrounding the ruins, even Raskell had a raise an eyebrow when Rhys and Annika pointed out Phann's own foresight into where the motley lot were headed. It seemed some of the crew knew more than the recruiter who'd hired him had deigned necessary.

Then came the woman from below decks, festive and twirling and full of life and seeming very much out of place amongst the cut of the crew present. If the young lady was trying to get the attention of the folks above decks, she was certainly doing a good job on Raskell, distracting him from the body language Rhys was exuding. The chef-turned-sellsword couldn't help but feel a strange sense of deja vu, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Something about the way she moved seemed oddly familiar, something he'd seen before. Staring perhaps a bit longer than he ought to have, the half-orc shook the thought from his mind, realigning his focus on the current goings-on for the time being.

"See, Solra? Someone else shares your enthusiasm for getting off of this deathtrap," Raskell chimed playfully, giving his pipe-enamored friend a coy glance in an attempt to improve her mood. After the moment had passed it was back to the business at hand, a more composed disposition coming to rest against the young adventurer's face.

"But yes, he's right, and that about sums it up except introductions. I'm Raskell, and this is Solra," he began, motioning again towards his dwarven counterpart before sweeping his hand towards the others one-by-one. "The well-dressed lady is Annika, and the one over there is Garith. Our two insiders here are Phann and Rada. The guy next to you, miss, is... someone." Raskell met Rhys' gaze for a moment followed by an honest shrug, not really sure how else to address him before he turned his focus back to the lass who'd pranced into their conversation. "He seems a capable sort."

Raskell returned his gaze to Phann and Rada, his arms still folded placidly as he leaned against his crate, face stiffening slightly into a passable professional facade whilst he waited patiently for the scout and sage of the Jolly Wanderer to hopefully share what information they'd gleaned for those assembled topside.
Apr 29, 2021 1:09 pm
"Yeah, well try not to drool so much they just swabbed the deck not to long ago," the tone was a bit more sour if possible perhaps his staring at that other female overly long did not sit well with her or the boat ride was just making her all-around irritable.
Apr 29, 2021 5:11 pm
Rada wants to start talking when Melianne comes from under deck and starts talking of her own. Rada's eyes narrow to slits as she gazes at Melianne while Phann raises his mug and greets her Welcome young lady! I was just about to tell what I know about our destination, the ruins of Surbanipal.
Unfortunatly though there isn't much information available.
Only a short mentioning on the fragment of a map that was found in the archives of Surtiskali.
Surbanipal, a place of many wonders and powe... was written next to the position but nothing more.
Even the exact age of the map is unknown but we are sure that it is at least threehundred years old, maybe more. The curious thing is that the city isn't mentioned on any other map we know of. The city council sent a scouting team to the described position and found the ruins.

It is now that you notice that Phann's cheeks are becoming increasingly red. Maybe from all the beer he drank or maybe from the presence of the flirty bard.
So this means that there is much to be discovered like...

Like hoards of beasts, orcs and whatever else the area here has to offer. And we don't even know what monsters might lurk in the ruins itself Rada rudely interjects.
She looks at Raskell. You asked about weth'r I've been 'round here. You bet I've been. Twentythree summers and winters I've been working as a scout for the Four Cities. If all the monsters that dwell 'round here united the Four Cities would be nothing but a memory in a matter of a year.
If you want my advice: That's a nice axe you have here. Always keep it on your body.
Don't get me wrong. I don't consider this a suicide mission, else I'd be in a tavern in Bridgeton drinkin' the day away. But it sure as the nine hells is not a jolly ol' trip to the archives of Surtikali and you better be very careful

Rada points at her eyepatch. Got this beauty a few years ago when I entered a grove with a beautiful silvery tree. Didn't pay attention because everything seemed to be so peaceful and nice and then out of nowhere *PAM* a hail of arrows. Lost half of a scouting team and my eye back there.
'his taught me a lesson. Complacency is the first step towards certain death.
Apr 29, 2021 6:16 pm
The roaring of blood drowns out other sounds, as he's snatched back in time at the mention of a silvery tree. A moment he does not care to revisit surrounded by strangers on a strange journey. It takes an almighty effort to return to the present moment, akin to wading through thick mud whilst cold hands grasp his legs, pulling him down into the dirt, unwilling to let the living be.

It couldn't be possible - not here!

Rhys feels his heart hammers his chest with great thumping blows, and his sense of control begins to spiral out of his grasp. His arms drop stock-still to his sides, hands clenched tightly into balls of fists - his knuckles whiten with tension.

There's nothing more he wants than to stride right over there, grab Rada and demand that she tell him what she knows but not now, the timing isn't right.

He's barely able to respond to Raskell.

"Rhys."
Apr 30, 2021 2:04 am
For just a moment, the half-orc's face grows a few shades darker in an amalgam of shame and embarassment, miming a silent "Solra!" as he gave her a mortified look. He wasn't even staring that hard at the mystery woman! At least, he didn't think he was.

As Phann gave his side of the goings-on, Raskell had time to recompose. The information was useful, if not a bit dull and dry for his liking. Rada, on the other hand, definitely knew how to tell a good story, earning the half-orc's rapt and undivided attention as she detailed one of her ventures into the wilds the Jolly Wanderer was barreling towards. Depressing, yes, but also riddled with excitement and a wealth of information regarding the dangers the group might end up mired in. It sure sounded like he'd backed the right horse when it came to the wager now, though it certainly also put an uncomfortable pit in his stomach; the unmistakable feelings of fear and uncertainty.

He started to say something about condolensces for Rada's friends, followed by a slew of questions regarding her further adventures abroad, but Rhys' voice caught his attention.

"Nice to know you, Rh--" he began, but whatever mirth was in Raskell's voice disipated faster than warmth in winter. When the armored cook turned to properly greet his new coworker, he'd expected the man to be poised and aloof or some such, not white-knuckled and looking like he was about to clock someone for spitting in his ale. Maybe Raskell had unintentionally struck a nerve in the way he'd introduced him to the woman.

"You, uh... you okay there, Rhys?" Raskell inquired, his voice low and tinged with an odd degree of concern. "Didn't mean to offend you or anything. Just didn't know how to address you is all."
Apr 30, 2021 11:24 am
Seeing Rhys tense up slightly and hearing a hint of weariness in his half-sigh - one that reminds her of old mercenary veterans she'd sometimes observe at inns and tavern, - Melianne takes a step back to give the man more room, finding no joy in causing disquiet with her chattiness. Instead she turns her attention to a polite half-orc who introduces the ragtag crew, and thanks him with a bow and words of gratitude, brief so she doesn't interrupt the meeting further, for Rada seems to be staring gloomily at her already. Ah, some people were all work and no joy...

While Rada and Phann weave their tales about the expedition - frankly, Firebird doesn't pay attention; something about the archives with a hard to pronounce name and ruins full of beasts? - Melianne leaves her spot besides the railing and drifts closer to the group, more intrigued in the people themselves than vague speeches of treasures and dangers. She passes by Annika, subtly brushing the woman's arm with her silks, circles Garith while noting his pointy ears and regal posture with an intrigued but fleeting gaze, and finally stops close to Raskell and Solra. She chooses to remain here for now, so she can send flirty looks at Phann while also observing the odd pair of... mercenaries? Guards? She doubts they are scholars.

Engrossed in her musings and the goal of making Phann increasingly more focused on herself, Melianne only starts paying attention again when Raskell calls out to Rhys. Her eyes snap to the man in question, who seems to be holding back either panic or rage if his sudden stillness is to be judged. She saw that a few times when tavern brawls erupted in places she performed at, and that often ended in flying chairs not of the magic variety.

"Are you alright, dear?" Firebird offers an inquiry of her own, turning on her heels to face Rhys again, tilting her head at him in a bird-like gesture - true to her namesake. "I'm sure our friend over here only meant the good with his words."

Annika tends not to notice much of the emotional state of other people, at least insofar as those feelings aren't directly related to her getting what she wants. But even she picks up on the sudden change in tone and the shift in focus to Rhys' apparent tension.

Curious to see what the man would do next - whether he would master himself, or perhaps explode - she watches him silently.
Apr 30, 2021 4:48 pm
Rhys stare lingers on Rada, unmistakably the focus of his attention.

His mind is a whirl of turmoil at the implications of another who'd stumbled upon the grove and survived, living and breathing right there.

During his travels he has yet to meet those who have the faintest inkling of his homeland, a place of wild beauty and danger punctured by the few scattered pockets of stubborn settlers trying to eke out a livelihood. He can truly make the claim that he knew the surrounding wilderness of that place like the back of his hands, scars and all. He'd spent fruitless years searching for it.

He's drawn to the eyepatch, a memento of Rada's encounter - a reminder that she's also a victim.

"I'm sorry for this odd turn."
he says, uncomfortable as he waves off their concerns, retreating back to his previous posture of folded arms. "Got nothing to do with y'all. Rada's not the only one who's seen that,"

He grinds his teeth, struggling to force the words out.

"Silver tree."
Apr 30, 2021 5:40 pm
Solra quietly sits smoking her pipe and casually accidentally on purpose blowing the smoke in Melianne's direction. She did not like her standing so close to Raskell who had already been nearly drooling over her when she made her appearance. It was not that she was jealous, I mean how could she be as they were not a thing. I mean a Dwarf and Half-Orc... really... no way. It was just because she wanted to protect Raskell from obviously manipulative women like her. Besides it gave her something else to focus on other than being in a leaky bucket with all that water beneath them.

"A silver tree?" Melianne puts her hand to her chin, tapping it in an expression of deep thought - certainly deeper than it actually is, seeing as she can only guess the context of its mention. "Is it a species? I've seen some very beautiful silver pines back around Habrook, they make for such a lovely sight in the mornings..." She frowns, glancing at Rhys with searching eyes. "But I suppose it must be something more sinister that you are recalling. If you don't mind me inquiring, what is this tree? Something magical? Is it-"

She abruptly stops herself, wrinkling her nose as a puff of smoke passes by it from the direction of Solra. Firebird is by no means a stranger to smoke - with how much her shows incorporate fire, smoke is just as familiar as music and applause, - but this particular one is too sharp for her senses, unfamiliar in its intensity. Ah yes, the dwarf lady is smoking a pipe! She really should've expected an assault on her senses... Melianne sniffs and coughs a little to clear her throat, then side-steps a few paces away from the group just to make it harder for the smoke to reach her.

Rada raises her eyebrow as Rhys mentions that he has seen a silver tree by himself.
Oh r'lly! You've seen that too? I came back to t' place where it was. With reinforcements f'course. But I only found a regular patch of forest.
And don't gimme that: "Oh you probably got lost in the forest"-crap. I know this area like the...

Rada doesn't get to finish her sentence.

Suddenly you can feel the whole ship dropping as if the water was pulled away from under it. For a very short time you feel weightless, then you can feel how the ship hits the river bed. The whole deck twists and you can see and hear how the planks and timbers of the ship crack because of the impact.
Captain Forsberg says "What?...." but the rest of what he wanted to say is drowned out by masses of water that come crashing down onto the ship.

Suddenly you are submerged in a mixture of water, debris and air bubbles. It is difficult to see but you think you can swim back to the surface and possibly to the river shore

You take 1 damage from the ship crashing down. With a successful DC10 Dex check you take no damage. In order to swim to the shore I need a DC11 athletics check from everyone. If it's not successful you suffer a level of exhaustion

EDIT: Because I was asked and it wasn't clear: You can keep your equipment. You either have it on your body or find it on your way to or at the shore

Rhys splutters and coughs, trying to avoid swallowing water - unable to comprehend what just happened.

In an effort to stay afloat amidst the chaos, he kicks out with his legs - the pull of the current threatening to drag him away. His first thought as he begins to stabilise is that of his hand crossbow, the last thing his brother had crafted before his untimely demise, a present for the outlander.

Panic fills Rhys as he beholds the splintering ship, the crew and passengers hurled into the river Galfer. He wants to help them out but the coldness clings to him, makes him heavier. They will have to survive on their own.

Rhys begins to swim to the nearest shore but out of the corner of his eyes, he spies his backpack bobbling upon the surface. Without a second thought, he turns away and swims toward it - eventually, he's able to wrap his arms around the backpack and use it as a floatation device.

His eyelids close for a moment; he feels utterly drained of energy. It would be so easy to just give up and let himself be pulled away into the deep.

Melianne yelps as the deck quite literally disappears from under her feet and the dancer is submerged by a rushing flow of cold river water. She instinctively tries to resist the current, breaking through the water surface with a gasp for breath, clinging to a random piece of a ship nearby. She is not good at swimming, for all that she travels by water routes often, but at the very least her clothing is not heavy enough to pull her under...

Slightly - or more than slightly - panicked by the situation, she looks around for any other people or a way to get to safety. The shore isn't that far away, but with all the debris and water currents she is slightly apprehensive of trying to get here on her own. Still, survival instincts win out in the end, and the woman leaves her saving anchor and makes a swim for the shore, hoping to get here before whatever destroyed the ship makes a re-appearance.

It proves to be easier than she expects, and despite her hair getting into her eyes every other second and her general disorientation from the shipwreck, Firebird manages to avoid any unfortunate collisions with pieces of the wood twisted around by the river or underwater rocks that it tries to pull her towards. She emerges from the river soaking and shivering, but still with enough energy to turn around and frantically scan the riverside for anyone else in need of assistance.

Solra's eyes go wide and she is already scrambling for something she had made sure would float should anything happen upon getting on the boat. The boat hits bottom and her solid stout bad bounces and she has gotten a hold of that floatsam with a death grip powered by extreme fear. When the waters come roaring in she takes a deep breath and prayers. Once the torrent ends she is bobbing on the surface thoroughly drenched, eyes closed praying, and holding like her life depended upon it.

In the span of what only felt like moments, the tide of the conversation had turned from concerning to dire in a very literal sense. Panic gripped the half-orc as the ship lurched, his body feeling lighter than air for the briefest of moments. It was a surreal and terrifying sensation, but whatever opportunity there might have been to figure out the source was drowned out in a deluge of water, wood, and desperation as Raskell came tumbling down into the drink alongside what was left of the splintered Jolly Wanderer.

The taste of river water filled the would-be adventurer's mouth, sputtering and coughing as he rose to the surface against the sudden roil. From the watery vestiges of the ship, he could see the shoreline, eyes blurred and breath sharp as he began the dogged swim back to solid land, eventually finding purchase on stable ground before falling to his knees to catch his breath, wheezing and spitting foul-tasting water onto the sandy loam.

As he peered up from his wretching position, there was at least one small boon: his pack! Somehow it had made its way onto shore itself, perhaps a little more waterlogged than originally intended, but it appeared relatively unscathed.

"Tymora smiles upon me," joked the chef to himself semi-sarcastically as he stumbled to his feet, trying to fight off the gnawing sense of panic even as the adrenaline from the wreck that had fueled his escape began to wane. This was bad, but the first thing Raskell needed to do was help make sure everyone else made it back ashore in one piece.

The sudden sense that things were about to go very wrong strikes Annika, and she's on her feet and braced to absorb the impact before the boat crash-lands on the riverbed. Unfortunately, there's nothing she can do to prevent the water rushing in over her head, and her fine silks and linens are instantly waterlogged, dragging her down. She struggles ashore like a drowned rat and lays on the bank gasping for breath.

The burst of water ends nearly as quickly as it began. The deafening sound of rushing water, splintering wood and screaming humanoids is soon replaced by the peaceful glugging of the river Galfer and the occasional call for help. A nearly surreal calmness just a few minutes after the sudden deluge.

You all manage to reach the shore, the swampy area that you noticed earlier. The last few feet were a smooth transition from swimming to crawling as you dig your hands into the muddy ground here. Many others seem to have managed to swim ashore too but it's difficult to see in the decreasing sunlight.
As you look up you notice that trees are spreading out their roots over the area forming small "islands" of traversable ground in the swamp. It reeks of decaying plant material and resin, the latter probably because of the destroyed ship.

Just as you all more or less get your bearings you hear a voice screaming on the right.
Come her' ya beasts! I'mma rip ya a second ugly mouth. Freackin' cowards. Huargh!
That's Rada's voice! And she seems to be in trouble!

Melianne, who had just managed to fish out her personal belongings out of the water and was trying to orient herself in the encroaching darkness while lamenting over the probably poor condition of her playing cards, jumps at the sound of Rada's war cry. She twirls in place, almost losing her balance on the unfamiliarly mushy ground in the process, and squints towards the rows of trees. It sounds like the fierce woman is in some sort of combat, perhaps with whatever destroyed the ship...

Melianne nervously bites her lip and clutches her pack as she considers what to do. She is not going to be useful in battle, she's sure of it - what can a dancer do besides inspiring the troops, and on this unstable ground? Maybe distract the opponent, should they be of human variety - certainly her soaked clothing will be quite distracting... But Firebird also knows a few spells which she learned years ago to use in her shows: pretty light summoning ones, and a simple charm for healing burns. If not as a fighter, maybe she can act as a healer instead?

Before she doubts her own decision further and bows to her lack of conviction, Melianne heads towards where she thinks Rada is. Jumping from root to root in an attempt to avoid treacherous patches of swampy grass and keeping an eye out for any other passengers of the destroyed ship, the dancer hopes that she won't get lost in the dark. On the way, she also reaches into her satchel and pulls out a heavily decorated horn - maybe not the best weapon, but it seems more appropriate for a battle than her lyre... and probably less disrupted by the water.

Rotten eggs tickles at his nostrils, a foul odour. Rhys retches—His eyes snap open to a darkening sky, skeletal branches swaying overhead. He rolls onto his knees, the last of the river water splattering black mud. He scrambles in a moment of panic, a sense of loss swallows him, but the comforting weight of the backpack wrapped within his arms provides immediate relief. The outlander buries his head within it; its faded leather hide his face. Rhys lets out a soft sob.

After a moment, he raises his head to survey his surroundings, a defiant expression on his face. Rada's scream splits the air. She has information that he desperately needs.

Rhys unties his backpack, reaches inside for his weapon. Armed at last, he stalks in the direction of the voice, a bolt readied on his hand crossbow.

The squelch of mud follows him.

Annika is lying flat on her back on the muddy riverbank when she hears Rada yelling. She briefly considers just pretending to be dead and letting other people deal with the situation, but... What if this is the reason you're here?

With a groan of effort and annoyance, she staggers to her feet and slogs her way through the cloying mud to firmer ground. Then she draws her rapier and heads in Rada's direction.
May 5, 2021 1:58 am
Still catching his breath, Raskell peered across the beachhead for any sign of his colleagues. He caught a glimpse of Annika, flat on her back from the ordeal, as well as Rhys and his satchel off in the distance. Even the mysterious dancer had washed ashore, drenched but alive. He breathed a sigh of relief, the taste of pungent water lingering on his tastebuds as he exhaled. That relief was soon replaced by concern -- where was the captain, or Phann and Rada? For that matter, where was Solra?

Already tense from the ordeal, it reached a new crescendo as someone shouted from across the coastline. He recognized that voice; it was Rada, and it didn't sound good.

"Oh, no," the half-orc mumbled to himself, his heart thumping hard in his chest. Torn between the immediacy to render aid and the dread of not spying his friend amongst the survivors, he cast his eyes to the river one last time. Debris from the Jolly Wanderer dotted the current, but Raskell saw nothing in the light of the setting sun. No captain. No Solra. Just flotsam, wreckage and the churning water beneath them. Steeling himself, the young adventurer knew the time to search for survivors wasn't now; it was time to make sure everyone else who'd made it ashore survived.

"Hang on, Rada!" Raskell shouted, throwing his pack over his shoulder with a clumsy jangle as he sprinted towards the sound of conflict as quickly as he could, slipping on mud and detritus awkwardly before finding purchase on sturdier earth as he hurried to catch up with the others. As he unslung his shield and drew his sword, the half-orc inhaled sharply, a wave of pain shooting up his side along his ribs. It had all happened so fast, he hadn't even noticed how hard he'd hit the deck as he was forced under the river. But he could worry about that later -- after the scout was out of danger!
May 5, 2021 9:10 pm
Korrin found the water barrel floating next to him when he surfaced and luckily it was only filled about a quarter of the way with what was now smelly muddy water, he had his pack in his hand when the ship went down. And as much time as he spends out in nature, he has learned through trial and error how to keep his pack dry.

He has yet to have a boat up and disappear from underneath his feet, but he has had to swim across a creek or even a narrow part of a river and still come out with at least one set of dry clothes to change into.

So he is thankful that he did bring the iron pot hanging from the back of his pack, since the lid is still secure and he now needs to bail out some water from the S.S. Hairyfoot, so he can make it to shore. Who knew the big thing would come in so handy?

He proceeds to do so until he is only ankle deep in his new luxury cruiser. And he has balanced out nicely, so unless a big wave comes at him he will be able to stay afloat indefinitely. The luck of the little people! Who says I'm too short? This barrel fits nicely!

As he shakes his head at the circumstances be sees that most of the people he saw on deck are already on shore except for the pipe smoking dwarf lass that was giving the human lady dirty looks.

She looks terrified clinging to the wreckage and does not seem to be making any effort to get to shore, and he seems to be the only one close enough to drag the floundering dwarf to safety. So reaching for the shovel and rope strapped to the sides of his pack he starts paddling her way with his makeshift oar. This isn't going as planned and his gear has been put to use in new and unusual ways, but things could be far worse.

He yells to the Dwarf "HANG ON I AM ON MY WAY...CATCH THE ROPE WHEN I THROW IT TO YOU!"

Korrin throws his rope at Solra and even though it lands directly beside her, Solra clinches to her precious piece of floatsam without any attempt to grab the rope.
Maybe he threw it in the wrong direction? Korrin looks extra carefully.
He can easily spot her, a dark sillouette among various pieces of debris, not too far away. Maybe 60-70 feet away. He can also notice that there is some kind of commotion going on at the shore.
Korrin throws the rope another time and it lands directly next to Solra again.
She still doesn't grab it unfortunatly
The flow of the river isn't very strong and so Korrin should easily be able to paddle to her position.
Meanwhile the rest of the group is scrambling towards the position from where Rada's screams could be heard. Rhys has troubles to hold his eyes because the scramble for the shore was so exhausting and so stumbles forward without much foresight.

While Korrin is busy rescueing Solra the rest of the group arrive at Rada's position nearly simultaniously.

You see Rada, drenched and muddy waving a longsword with her right hand and a long iron dagger with her left. You can see blood running down from her left shoulder. About 10 feet behind her are a few people, huddled together and clearly terrified. She waves both weapons in wide arcs in order to scare off her attackers:
Three creatures that look like giant frogs stand about 15 feet away from her, in a triangle shaped formation, with the base pointing at Rada.
They are about as big as an average human, wielding spears and wearing crudely crafted hide armors.
The middle one's skin is yellow and it's wearing a tattered shield in addition to the spear. The other two are muddy green.

Rada and the creatures notice you almost at the same time.
While Rada barks Ey, go an' get those ugly bast'rds at you, the yellow monster just lets at a loud Croak! and gets ready to face its new adversaries

Peeking from her safe position, she eyes the frogs skeptically, noting their vaguely humanoid shapes. "Are you sure we can't solve this peacefully?" The dancer calls out to Rada, but it serves to make the amphibians all look her way; Firebird squeaks and hides behind the tree before they choose her as an easy target.

"Alright, not swinging a sword - no blood on my hands," she mutters to herself nervously, lifting her horn to her eyes and inspecting it critically. Rolling onto the scene with all the grace and finesse of of a drunken oaf, Raskell positioned himself between the others and the weird frog-things. Caked in mud, grime, soaking wet with sword and shield in hand, he was quite the sight as he eyed the situation nervously. Never in his life had he seen anything like these bizarre frog creatures, crudely armed and armored as they menaced Rada and the other survivors.

"Guess it's time to really put those drills to work," he thought to himself, swallowing hard at the prospect of actual life-or-death combat. Until now, the rowdiest he'd gotten was having to toss the local drunks after bopping them one with a club. But this? This was the real deal, and there was no room for mistakes. Lives were at stake -- lives that could be snuffed out if he and the others didn't intercede. Focusing himself for a moment, he breathed deep as his body grew tense, muscle and sinew flexing slightly as he tightened his grip on his armaments.

No. If nothing else, he wouldn't sit idly by and do nothing. Perhaps he didn't have the experience, but he had the skills and the training, and he'd be damned if he didn't at least do his best to try and protect the folks being waylaid by these amphibious jerks.

"Don't worry. Everything'll be okay," Raskell said as assuredly as he could muster, the young warrior putting on his best facade of bravado and courage. Whether this statement was specifically directed at his fellow adventurers, Rada and the survivors, or just himself wasn't very clear; what was clear, however, was the aggresive stance he took, narrowing his focus towards the yellow frog creature in the center as he positioned his shield in anticipation for the coming melee.

Fatigue wears Rhys like a well-worn cloak.

The edge of his vision blurs, a hindrance as he threads across the treacherous terrain toward Rada's voice. Fortunately, he's not the only one on their way to lend aid. The half-orc is a lodestone; his chainmail the star that guides the outlander across this darn swamp.

The dancer's caution alerts Rhys; her flowing silks blooms like a flower set against the roots of a tree. Past her, he sees Rada's bloodied and beset by strange creatures. Without hesitation, he takes up position beside Melianne under the cover of another tree. He leans against its gnarled bark; a brief reprieve from his exhaustion.

The outlander pokes his head out, examining the targets. Raskell seems well-equipped to deal with their leader, so he shifts his focus to the unshielded hostiles. They're easy pickings - he'll make 'em pay.

"They're not friendly. Ain't that a shame."

The three frog-like creatures begin to... waddle into your direction in a way that is almost comical if it weren't for the recent shipwreck and the spears in their hands.
Apparently not fully suited for movement on land they have difficulties to move forward. They approach Raskell very slowly and in the end the leader and one of the green monsters are facing him from about 10 feet away while the other one ist standing behind them.

With the battle starting again since the frogs seem to show no intention of backing off, Melianne covers behind the tree and lifts her horn again, a triumphant battle march starting to echo over the clearing. It's not so much a coherent melody as it is an energetic beats, created from pure inspiration to get the combatants' spirits up and intimidate their opponents. It sounds vaguely like a song one can hear playing in a tavern, incoherent in structure but making one want to dance their worries away... Or launch themselves into a merry brawl.

As she plays, Melianne tries to ignore the battle itself - she doesn't need to see all the gruesome details, thank you, and she flinches when Rhys' crossbow bolt whizzes in alarming proximity of her. But as the hunter leaves her side to move into a better position to rain devastation upon the amphibians, Firebird actually gathers her courage to peek from behind the tree and pause her song. She surveys the field and an idea pops into her head; it won't be the first time she used this spell to help someone land a shot...

Murmuring words of a spell in a sing-song manner while carefully moving closer by circling her saving tree, Melianne directs her magic to envelop the opponents - and ignite. For a moment all of the frogs start to glow like oversized green fireflies - though it remains to be seen if it sticks. She just hopes it would help her allies, and doesn't attract attention to herself... For now, back to making this fight a musical epic.

The monster looks at the bolt with even wider eyes than before. It has no time to make any action though as Annika suddenly jumps forward and pierces the heart of the creature with her rapier. The monster behind it is also engulfed in green light. This makes it easier to target both of them.

Combat round 2:
The leader of the frog-creatures lets out a sound that sounds like the combination of a screech and a croak and thrusts its spear at Raskell. At the same time it tries to bite Raskell into his shoulder.
The frog-creatue that stood behind the other green frog-monster steps over its killed companion and attacks Annika with its spear as well as biting at her hand.
Raskell skillfully blocks the spear attack by his opponent. The enemy also tries to bite his shoulder but the only things it accomplishes is a blow to the head by his weapon

Annika in turn isn't that lucky. The spear of her opponent hits her shoulder. Just as she is about to stabilize herself again the monster bites her arm and Annika goes down.

Annika, please roll a death saving throw.

Magic, music, and mayhem -- everything was happening so fast! The throes of battle upon them, Raskell's nervousness and clumsy swings found themselves invigorated by the uplifting tempo of the anonymous-but-strangely-familiar performer while the others lead the offensive. In a somewhat literal way, the half-orc adventurer found himself with a song in his heart, his confidence and his success bolstered as he found purchase with his trusty blade against the malignant foe before him, deflecting its vicious counter-strikes in turn.

As the battle ebbed momentarily and the frogs' attention waned, Raskell caught sight of what had drawn their attention: a heavily armed halfling and none other than Solra! Though she was looking worse for wear and more than a little down, he was glad to see she'd made it out of the shipwreck in one piece.

His relief was short-lived, however, when he saw Annika take the brunt of spear and fang, the chef's eyes going wide with shock.

"Annika!" he blurted out reflexively, worry dripping in his tone. There wasn't much he could do at the moment; Raskell had his own problems in front of him. "Solra! Stranger! Help!" he cried out to the reinforcements. Though it could have gone without saying, tactless desperation and hot-blooded adrenaline had won the day.

Returning his focus back to the yellow-skinned creature looking to skewer him, too, Raskell redoubled his efforts, lashing out with another heavy cross-swing from his longsword. The lovely bard had painted the monsters in a mighty helpful skein of magic he didn't quite understand, save that he could see them for what they were -- murderous foes that had to be defeated before anyone else got hurt!

This is something he never expected he would ever see, let alone face in battle, but he sees that the half orc has drawn all of the creatures attention as he steps up and swings, catching the yellow skinned frog completely unaware he connects with both blows.

Then continues moving past the yellow frog in an attempt to aid the woman, seeing as the half orc has called for help.

Melianne is startled by Raskell's cry for Annika and quickly looks over at the battlefield to see what's wrong. The melody she plays hitches in pitch and fades out on a distorted note as she sees the human woman drop down from a spear piercing her shoulder and a vicious bite, the swampy ground now splattered with a terrifying amount of blood. Trying to ignore the queasiness it makes her feel, the dancer almost instinctively steps back, before pulling herself together. Battles might not be her forte, but Firebird will be damned if she runs from one; especially when there is danger to one of her companions! She might not know them well, but shared circumstance still make them closer.

Trying to use these thoughts as a reassurance to ward off her fear, the dancer waits for a moment when the frogs are distracted. It comes in a form of a joined attack of Raskell, Rhys... and some halfling that is now on the battlefield? When did he arrive? And is that Solra the pipe smoking dwarf somewhere behind? Firebird stares for a moment, but then bolts from the cover of the trees, intending to get closer to her allies while still keeping out of reach of the enemies. She does have a weapon if things go dicey, a gift from one of her many acquaintances... but there is another one that is sharper and needs no steady hand.

"Hey, you pathetic, lacking in manners, bloodspilling amphibians!" The dancer calls out as she skids to a stop a few dozen feet or so away from where Raskell and the halfling are fighting the frogs. "I've toured all of the four cities, but it's the first time I see folk so consumed by mindless violence that they would attack their guests with no concern for civilty or hospitality, with barely a warning!" Firebird raises her hand to flick her hair over her shoulder in a dramatic fashion. "You are less than the ground you walk upon. Even mud of the swamps has more tact!"

Her piece said - though likely not understood, but the tone should be enough to translate the idea behind it, - Melianne hurries to back off behind her allies. Her gaze catches on Solra again, and after a brief hesitation, she moves to approach her. At the same time, she tries to remember the exact specifications of that one healing spell she knows... Annika's wound is not a minor burn, but if it can help in any way, she has to try.

Raskell stabs the frog-monster leader into the shoulder. A croaking scream escapes its mouth and it raises its spear to retaliate.
But before it can stab at Raskell the halfling with a weapon in each hand cuts down the leader and continues to the last monster standing.

The last monster turns to Korrin when it's suddenly struck by a crossbow bolt in the shoulder. A second bolt flies high over its head

Melianne's insults don't seem to bother the monster and it turns to her. But suddenly Rada runs at the monster with a horrifying battle cry.
She runs her sword through the back of the monster so that it sticks out the chest on the other side.
With a last faint, surprised Croak!? it breaks down and falls to the ground.

That's what ya get for screwin' with us, you basterds! she cries out. She breathes heavily and looks at you, muddy water dripping down her forehead and over her eyepatch.
She points at Annika *Erm*... I think your friend needs help

With the frogmen dead and the battle won, Raskell still held his weapons in a death grip for a moment, the heat in his body cooling as the reality of the situation sunk in: it was over. Caked in mud, blood from Rada's felling blow and sore from his escape from a watery demise, he couldn't help but let out a slight chuckle; not one of mirth or joy, but genuine, bona fide relief.

The small stranger snapped him back to reality. Dropping his sword and shield without concern with a clang and a squelch, the chef dropped to his knees beside the injured Annika.

"Solra! Snap out of it! Annika needs help!" the half-orc shouted pleadingly to his clerical confidant, his voice an odd amalgam of heated panic and undirected anger for what had happened as he flung the laden leather satchel from his shoulder and into the mud. In any other situation, Raskell would have sooner lost a finger than what he was about to do, but he was riled up, and in the moment emotion took precedence over logic. Unceremoniously, he tore through his backpack with haste, foisting his beloved and elaborate cookware out into the grime beside him to dig deeper, removing a slightly waterlogged but still usable healer's kit that had been shuffled to the bottom of his pack when the Jolly Wanderer must have gone into the drink.

"Hold still, Annika. We'll get you all patched up and Solra'll make you right as rain," Raskell murmured, intensely focused on the task in front of him as he surveyed Annika's injuries. He was no sawbones, but Raskell had learned enough between the kitchen and the militia to bind a wound or two; he only needed to stop the bleeding long enough for Solra to return to her wits. Liberating a roll of bandages and some herbal ointment from the container, he pressed the salve hard into each wound, wrapping the linen gauze snuggly enough to ward off the flood of crimson pouring from the brave woman's body. It wasn't pretty when he finished, but it was effective enough for what it was worth.

When all is said and done, Raskell leans back, taking a seat right there in the damp earth as he caught his breath. It'd been a while since he'd felt so much adrenaline; it was wearisome, but also oddly exhilarating in a primal, alien way that made him feel uneasy. But the moment was done; he just needed a second. He peered across at the rest of those around him -- those who'd stepped into the fray, and those who'd needed protecting.

"Everyone else okay?"

Raskell'll go ahead and make use of his Healer's Kit to automatically stabilize Annika. That ticks his kit down to 9/10.

With the battle over, much to the relief of Rhys, he walks over to the frogmen and rummages through their belongings. He pulls out an intact bolt with a sickening squelch, wiping off the gore upon the carcass. "Well now. This coulda been avoided." he tuts at their foolishness. The importance of communication is a hard-learned lesson for these fellows, and one that came a little late.

It seems he's in a crew of esteemed combatants unafraid to tangle with foes of a strange kind. He watches Raskell's efforts to stabilise the injured woman, approving of his apparent skill to patch wounds up, and of the halfling's efforts.

"Might be there's more of 'em. I don't recommend we stick around to find out."

Welp, I was waiting for an answer before posting, but I guess it doesn't matter anymore.
Melianne drops down her hand which is still clutching the horn, and watches all the activity around the clearing with a somewhat lost expression. She... doesn't really know what she is supposed to do now. She was going to check on the wounded human woman before, but the latter is already being tended to by Raskell and the yet-unknown halfling - and Melianne doesn't wish to get in their way with her limited knowledge of treating burns and not much else. And she'd rather not see the frog bodies up close...

Nervously straightening the silk scarf on her waist and putting away the horn just to do something, Melianne takes a second to check on the surrounding. The short burst of adrenaline the battle granted her had all but faded, leaving the dancer unsure and out of her element. A group of fierce, blood-splattered skilled mercenaries is not her scene - she might deal well with such people in a tavern amidst music and fun, with easy camaraderie, but not in some forsaken swamp! Does she approach?

Her slightly panicked thoughts are interrupted when she notices movement to her right, and suddenly remembers the dwarf woman... who is still at the shore, and seems to be clutching some wooden wreckage. Firebird glances back at the others, her eyes seeking out Raskell. Since the half-orc is Solra's friend - or lover? both? - from what Melianne had gathered, she should probably fetch him. But he looks busy bandaging Annika, and there is never a good time to distract a doctor at work.

With a sigh, Melianne turns and hesitantly starts walking up to the dwarf, still unsure if she's crossing an unspoken line and is even welcome. She moves deliberately slowly and steps on every branch she can on the way to alert Solra to her approach, since the latter appears to be stressed, and stops just in reach from the other woman. "Darling, are you alright?" Firebird makes anothjer step forward, and gently puts a hand on Solra's shoulder. "You should move away from the water, you'll catch a cold. Here, let me help you get up?"

Korrin sees the the big half orc has stemmed the flow of blood on the woman ans she appears to be out of danger. He pats the half orc on the shoulder as he stands up and looks around.

His first piece of business is to wipe his weapons clean before stowing them, while he silently berates himself for not having a healers kit... Will have to get one as soon as possible.

Secondly he needs to secure the rest of his equipment before it all washes away, he coils up his rope, checking its condition as he does so and secures it back on his pack along with his trusty shovel/oar, then finally hefts his pack before going over to help the woman to convince the dwarf lass to just stand up already.

He eyes the situation with a smile on his face and just walks over and taps the dwarf on the shoulder. "Lass you can let go now, you have been safely ashore for a few minutes now, there is someone in need of a true healer as the battle is over now as well."

Solra's knuckles are white from her near death-grip upon the floatsam, the gentle voice of Melianne barely reaches her consciousness but her continued efforts sink deeper in slowly peeling back the layers of fear that overcame her earlier. By the time Korrin arrives Solra is already nearly ready to attempt to leave the sanctity of her refugee. At Korrin's words she nods and says, "Alright," followed by fearfully and ever so carefully maneuvering until she has semi-solid ground under her feet and then carefully makes her way out of the water backpack in hand. Once upon drier ground, she looks at them and turns to Melianne and nods in respect towards her, "Thank you for rescuing me here." Then she turns to Korrin and nods in respect, "Thank you for rescuing me from out there," she points out into the river. "I owe both of you a debt of honor, if you need anything just ask. Now where is or are those in need of healing?"

"You are welcome, dear," Melianne steps back to give Solra space, while giving her a quick once-over in case the dwarf herself is in need of medical help. She doesn't seem to be, only soaked with Galfer's water - like all of them, - and maybe still a bit nervous. The dancer can certainly relate, now that there is time to process everything that just happened.

"Our companions are tending to Annika," she gestures back to where Raskell is watching over the human woman and Rhys watches over Raskell. Or at least it's how she thinks it is. "She took a spear to the shoulder and a nasty bite from a frog creature, I believe." Melianne pauses, then pats her satchel. "If you need supplies, I have a small pack of bandages and salves... I use them for burns and scractches, but they can probably help with other injuries? I know nothing of these things, you'd probably be better at it."

She then turns to the halfling, inspecting him with curiosity. "I don't believe we've been introduced! But I've seen you join the fight, out of nowhere. Are you a mysterious hero who appears when things are dire and there are damsels to be saved?" She lifts her hand to her lips and giggles. "It was a very well-timed entrance, for sure, sir."

"Why yes, how did you know? Haven't you had the pleasure of being rescued by the local "Barrel Ranger Oar Society" before today..." Korrin can't keep a straight face any longer and finally busts out laughing.

"It was just pure luck is all, what want to know is where did the boat go? Thankfully they had a halfling life boat just waiting for me when I surfaced haha. But where are my manners, Korrin Undermoss at yer service young lady." And he offers his hand to the wet lady.

Solra looks to where Melianne points and nods and responds, "Thank you I will not need those supplies, as I gifts bestowed upon me by Khalreshaar and Eilistraee." She then makes her way in the direction that Melianne pointed until she locates Raskel.

Upon seeing Raskel she says, "Raskel, I hear someone is injured." With purpose in front of her and semi-solid ground below her once more, she is slowly becoming herself once again. Getting next to Annika she touches her, "May the blessings of Eilistraee heal your wounds."

"Bastard bit me," she growls, searching for her fallen rapier. Looking up at Solra and Raskell, and realising that nobody seems to be fighting, she asks, "Did we get 'em?"
May 12, 2021 8:25 am
"Done and dusted." Rhys hands over the woman's rapier, having found it near one of the frogmen - he has wiped the mud off as best as he could. He eyes her curiously. Perhaps he can learn something from her.

"I'm of the same mind of Korrin," he says to those gathered within earshot. They had wounded to tend to, scared people to herd, and hostile creatures to contend with.

"We are not home-free yet."

Rhys sifts thorugh the frog-monsters possessions. Apart from the crudly crafted spears he doesn't find anything of value on them.

Rada wipes her sword clean with the armor of her slain enemy. She looks at all of you and as she sees that everyone is being tended to she begins to curse like a sailor.
After a few minutes the flow of incoherent curse words subsides and is replaced by whole sentences Dogshit! What inna nine hells happened?! And Phann, this idealistic fool isn't ev'n here to pay up his bet. Taken by this damned frog people. By Mielikki! I'm gonna shred those frog people first and then I'm gonna turn Phann inside out for his idiotic optimism.

Rada leans against a tree, lowers her head and sighs. She closes her eye and you can see how she tries to steady her breath.
After her breathes become deeper and slower, she calmly begins to speak, with her head still lowered
Gotta say. Y'all fought valiantly. And you... she raises her head and points at Annika ... are packing a lot more punch than I'd have expected.

She stands up and walks over to the people she was protecting when you came to her help. None of them dared to talk during the patching up of your companions.

This... she points at the people ... is th' glorious rest of the crew an' passengers of the Jolly Wanderer.
The sun is setting so it's becoming increasingly harder to count the people but you are sure that those are merely a fraction of the people who were on the Jolly Wanderer initially
The rest of 'em were taken by those frog people. When I swam ashore most of t' others were being lead into th' forest by those green bast'rds. We at leas' stopp'd those three.

Rada looks up and down the shore. Pieces of wood, crates and various items from the Jolly Wanderer are strewn along it.

I think we should'a make camp. Don't think that followin' them into th' dark wood is of much use.

Regarding Investigation checks:
Usually if you are looking for something it is a perception check.
Investigation is used if you try to deduce something from existing clues.

So Rhys' check is a perception check in this case

Sometimes both skills can be used for the same situation depending on how you frame it. E.g. when looking for a hidden compartment in a room you can just look for it (Perception) or try to deduct where a hidden compartment would fit in (Investigation)

Through Solra's divine aid, Raskell could feel the tension of the situation leave him like air from a puffed up sack as Annika gasped and spoke, her anger catching him somewhat off-guard. His eyes drifted momentarily, passing over Annika first, then Solra, lingering a tad longer on the stouter woman than perhaps he meant to before he slowly rose, doing his best to scoop his poor utensils back into his pack before making a crude attempt to liberate some of the mud clinging to his now wet and filthy attire.

Raskell began to speak, but Rada's outburst cut him off. Only now did he realize just how grim things really were; these weren't all of the frog-things that laid dead before the assembled party, and many of the crew -- Phann included -- were left unaccounted for. The chef-at-arms' heart sank into his stomach again, twisting into an uncomfortable knot. They'd won a small victory. At least these folks were safe. But for Raskell, that wasn't enough.

"You guys're right," Raskell begrudgingly said in agreement with Rada, Rhys and Korrin, obviously still bitter over the ordeal but trying desperately to regain his composure post-battle. "No objection from me. But we've gotta go after them. They're still out there somewhere, and we're the only ones who can do something about it," he added. As terrifying as the prospect was, he refused to let this be the end of things. But for now, rest and recuperation.

Softening slightly, Raskell returned his focus to Solra, resting his hands on both of her shoulders along with a warm smile. "I'm alright. The important thing is you're okay, Solra. Just... no more boats for a bit, okay? Scared me half to death when I didn't see you on the shore when I washed up. Guess that means we both owe Mister Korrin a debt." They sure made an odd pair, but it was plain as day that the young adventurer had a soft spot for the dwarf.

"And you, too, Annika. Glad you didn't give up the ghost. Had us worried," Raskell said, giving the woman some space as he recollected the rest of his muddied armaments, fingers still tinged a dried blackish-red from his impromptu first aid. But time was short, and there was much to do.

"We'd best get to it. Should see if we can scrounge up what what's left from the Jolly Wanderer before it gets dark," the sellsword agreed, putting a hand over his eyes to gauge the setting sun before casting it back towards the shoreline. "With a little luck, maybe something edible survived the crash."
May 13, 2021 4:11 am
Hearing that Raskell was indeed unhurt she felt calmer inside then at his mention of boats she concurred, "Yes no more boats, I will crawl all the way if I have to!" After Raskell finishes talking she softly says, "Alright you head up the scrounging party, and I will see if anyone else needs tending to and then help stand guard." With that said she gives his arm a squeeze before turning to the others and saying louder, "Is anyone else hurt?"

"Would have been a goddamn stupid way to die, gnawed to death by a giant frog. I'll have to be a bit more careful next time."

Annika rubs her shoulder, even though there's not the slightest scratch to show where she was skewered. "And there will be a next time. Seems pretty clear that they sank our boat somehow, not to mention made off with a bunch of our people, so we'd best make sure they get what's coming to them. What's the plan - fortify the camp for the night, then go hunting in the morning? Are we sure the captives are going to live that long?"
May 13, 2021 5:21 am
"I'm afraid I won't be much use from here on out," The mere thought of scavenging for supplies after surviving all they've been through in such a short time is utterly draining.

"Best I can do is stand guard with my trusty crossbow. But as the little fella says, we'll be needin' to put up some barricades if we intend to wait til 'morn, and this terrain don't seem mighty suitable for that. If y'all don't mind bearin' with me, I'll have a look-see for better ground that don't leave us so open from those terrible creatures."

He sweeps a free hand at their swampy surroundings, shaking his head in a fit of indignation at their predicament.

After introducing herself to Korrin in turn, Melianne almost automatically drifted after him back to the group. Still, during the entire - discussion? raid planning? war council? - she was busy blending uncharacteristically into the background. Hiding behind Korrin, as oxymoronish as it sounds with their height difference and the dancer's natural inability to be stealthy, even in the slowly encroaching darkness of the night. But the halfling seemed like a cheery fellow, her sort of crowd, unlike the battle-hardened mercenaries, cursing sailors or stoic hunters, as nice as all of them might be.

As everyone move on with their respectful plans to improve the situation, Melianne sighs and twirls the end of her scarf, absent-mindely trying to squeeze the water out of it. She watches everyone else, silently considering which of them is more approachable at the moment, but coming up short with decisions. She can't hunt, heal or build barricades effeciently, and she really doesn't want to go back into the water to fish for supplies... And music is not the best idea if there are enemies nearby. What remains? The dancer hums to herself, and then turns to approach Rhys.

"Perhaps you will appreciate some company?" She puts her hand on her chin, lips stretching in a smile, trailing behind him with a deliberately playful sway of her hips - though the latter seems to be almost a habit. "There is strength is numbers, and I'm not much help in organizing a camp." Melianne looks at him with a pleading expression. "I can help you... scout? Oh, and I can do this!" She seems to have gotten a sudden idea, and with a click of her fingers a few floating glowing orbs of fire appear around them.

Giving Solra a knowing nod, Raskell turned his attention back to Annika whilst Rhys, Melianne and Korrin took to scouting.

"I... guess we don't," admitted the half-orc dourly on the subject of the missing crew. "I mean, we could head out there now, but..." he began, his voice trailing off as he looked to those around him once more. Beleaguered, waterlogged, and wounded as they were, he wasn't sure how else to sugarcoat the situation in an optimistic manner. How could he? Instead, he let the newly minted battleground speak for itself.

Not wanting to dwell on the prospect of what Phann and the rest of the Jolly Wanderer's missing members might be going through, the mud-spattered adventurer opted to change the topic. "I suppose I'll get to rustling up whatever I can while there's still light. Crates and planks, dry goods, and anything else that survived might come in handy," he said, his gaze again sweeping across those still present and raising his brow slightly. "Could go faster with a few extra hands."

"Right," Annika turns to address the mob of frightened survivors, and speaks in the voice of someone accustomed to giving instructions and being immediately obeyed without question.

"Okay, listen up! We're going to make camp for the night. Rhys and Korrin are finding us a good location. In the meantime, everyone needs to be gathering whatever we can salvage from the wreck, especially food and anything we can use to build fortifications. If you are wounded, come and see Solra. Raskell is in charge of the salvage operation, so follow his instructions. Look alive, people, we've got work to do!"
OOC:
I'm leaning on Annika's "Position of Privilege" feature here, particularly "The common folk make every effort to accommodate you and avoid your displeasure." Not sure if that's enough to warrant Advantage on the Persuasion check to get people motivated, but I've included it just in case. (Edit: Didn't matter, and man, tough crowd! I guess they've been through a lot.)

Annika can hear a few people in the mob mutter dismissive comments but within a few minutes of Annika's address most of them get up and either search for salvageable goods or go to Solra for medical treatment.

Most wounds are simple bruises and cuts that Solra has no problem in treating.

Korrin scouts the surroundings. Most footprints in the mud are pretty fresh and he can easily see where the frog people came from and that they led the survivors of the wreckage back the same way.
Scrol sent a note to Rizzoxiii
He can also find a tree that stands just right so that he can overlook both the survivors as well as part of the wooded swamp.

Melianne's lights are a great help and Rhys asks her to direct them to various positions in order to look for any suitable camp site. Unfortunatly though there don't seem to be any good spots for camping. After looking for a spot for a while they settle for an area between two trees where the network of roots make the ground at least a bit less muddy.

While you are all busy the sun goes down completely.

At the site that Melianne and Rhys chose for the camp Rada is trying to get a fire started but the absence of any dry wood makes it very difficult. Annika comes to help her and with a flick of her wrist a stream of fire leaps from her hand into the heap of wood in front of Rada, lighting it. Rada raises her eyebrows, nods appreciatively and goes off to help the others.

The survivors all collect at the camp site and show what they were able to recover from the wreckage.
-A crate of dry rations, enough to feed you all for a few days
-A bag with various gemstones and an amulet(2x obsidian worth 10gp each, 4x turquoise worth 10gp each, 2x onyx worth 50gp each, a silver amulett in the shape of a lizard worth 25 gp)
-A lot of wood that can be used to form barricades around the camp and keep the fire going
-A few daggers and shortswords

In the light of the campfire you can count thirteen people excluding you and Rada that are here.
One of them, a man with black hair that surrounds a bald spot on his head steps forward I just want to thank you in them name of us all. When those frog-things came we thought we were done for. Thank you so much. he shifts a bit uncomfortably and then asks Eh.. do we have a plan to free the others?
OOC:

Please fel free to RP as you wish, I'm gonna reply as necessary and on monday I'm gonna move us to the next day

@Rizzoxiii Usually anything regarding tracking and orientation is a survival check. The investigation check is right for finding a tree to climb. So I'm gonna take your perception check as a survival check and the investigation check as a check for finding a suitable observation post (both successfully btw)

@Queni I'd rule this as a survival check so I'm gonna take that roll. Melianne's help gives you advantage on the check which is balanced out by the disadvantage from your exhasution

@Kadeton Yep, advantage is warranted here. And sure, use your cantrip to make fire
May 14, 2021 10:32 pm
Korrin finds a tree that'd he is sure will suit his needs for an observation post to give the camp early warning of another attack. He calls down for a meal to be brought to him when there is time. So he settles in for the night, getting as comfortable as he can, because it will definitely be a long night.

In the meantime Korrin tries to keep his focus on the dark swamp surrounding the makeshift camp, as well as pointing out any trails that he had found to Rhys and Raskell so that they could also be observed and fortified on the ground, all the while puzzling over the other set of tracks he found and If he could figure out what kind of animal was with the human. Being as he only caught a glimpse of them before it got to dark.

Melianne spends almost all of this time following Rhys, accompanied by her floating lights and chatting at the man about her dancing routine, trying to keep her mind off the current bleak situation. She only leaves his side once, when out of the corner of her eye she notices Annika's little trick with the firewood; like moth to the flame - or rather, a firebird, - the dancer is attracted to anything that can make flames, and she watches the noble woman with a renewed respect after that.

Once the survivors gather around the newly founded campsite, Melianne drifts back to Rhys, offering sweet smiles to those she meets the eye of, but generally remaining silent. Yet her restless nature takes over pretty soon, and not wanting to listen to a serious discussion she jumps to her feet, gesturing vaguely to the tree in the distance. "Ah, I'm rubbish at making plans, I'll only get in the way. I think I will go and bring some food to our brave protector from Barrel Ranger Oar Society instead," she declares cheerfully and turns to leave the campsite, heading for the tree Korrin has decided to stay at. She doesn't bring any of the rations they found with her, instead opting to offer the halfling her own supplies. Who knows how they'll set up the rationing, so why raise the question early...

Annika isn't much inclined to listen to the miserable grumbling of those assembled around the fire either. Speculation about the fate of the other passengers, the threat of further attacks from frog people, or the prospect of trudging through the swamp seem to be on everyone's minds, and she can hear them heading towards desperation and panic. Better try to keep their spirits up.

"Come on, you sad sacks. We've got food, we're warm and fairly dry, and we've got people on guard to look out for us. Things could be a lot worse! Let's make the best of it, eh? Who knows a good tune? I picked this one up down by the docks..."

With that, she launches into the bawdiest, most inappropriate sailor's drinking song she can think of, encouraging others to join in with interjections of "Sing, you bastards!".

The dancer's aid is a welcome one, her chatter less so and Rhys only murmurs agreement at various points of the one-sided conversation as they search for better ground; however, her floating orbs prove key to securing a less exposed campsite as they stumble across a network of roots. It's better than nothing, but still makes for a dismal sight. He offers his thanks to Melianne along with a curt nod. As much praise as you can get from the weary outlander.

He sets about unrolling his bedroll and settling in for the night. With his crossbow clutched tight to his chest, and his backpack serving as a pillow - he tells those nearby, "Wake me up if anything's amiss."

And so, he slips into a deep sleep.

Reluctantly some of the people begin to chime in on Annika's tune but after the first verse all constraint disappears and everybody loudly sings 'The Tale of the Salty Mermaid and her Drinking Crew'
As such songs go everybody knows a new verse to the song and so you sing over 20 verses about the adventures and wrongdoings that the crew experienced in the various harbors it piloted to.
The solemn mood that reigned before is replaced by laughter and optimism. Everybody seems to be sure that tomorrow you all just march over to the frog people and free the other crew members. Whoever stands in your way will get 'the ol' one-two punch on the nose'.

After a good laugh and with a heart full of joy you all begin to prepare your sleep rolls. Tomorrow will probably be exhausting but you are sure that you can rescue all the others, no matter what.

Solra does her best to make sure everyone has been tended to to make sure to potentially minimize or eliminate any complications from the ordeal everyone had just gone through. Once the evening draws nigh she finds a good place to sit so she can keep an eye on the folk as well as the nearby error. She removes the heavy armor for the night but keeps the padded underlayer on just in case.
May 17, 2021 6:33 pm
The night goes by uneventfully. Korrin and Solra keep an eye out for enemies but apart from the constant smacking sounds of the swamp nothing disturbs your rest.
Everyone gets up and helps themself to a portion of the rations for breakfast.
In the rising sun you can now see the crowd of people more clearly. None of them are armed or look like any kind of warriors.
After everyone finished their breakfast the crowd of people look around in a confused way and they seem to be waiting for any kind of input or command.
Rada uses a piece of cloth she found on the beach to clean her weapons from the mud that accumulated on them during her rest. Even though she isn't looking up, she seems to be aware of the situation and begins to talk in a rather low voice
A'ight, seems like we survived th' night. Any plan's on a rescue mission? Or will ya let the oth'rs rot at the frog people's lair?
The crowd of people collectively raise their eyebrows as Rada says the last sentence and look at you with concerned faces.
May 17, 2021 6:38 pm
"Well we have a two pronged problem, we need to get these folks to safety and we need to rescue the others while staying in communication some how. Did we actually lose that many warriors when that ship went down sure would make it easier if had more able bodied fighter types? Still I do not think having the group wait here in the swamp while we rescue the others would be a good idea but not sure how we can maintain communication to know where to head to once the rescue mission has been completed. "Does anyone have any clue as to where we are or how far we might be from these ruins we are supposed to be camping at?

He looks around for any sign of somebody knowing anything.

"What sank the boat? Somebody here has to know how far we had gone? The crew has made this journey before I would hope.

"I think we know who sank the boat. Frog people! We need to get our fellow travellers back, and who has them captive? Frog people! We need to get out of this swamp, and who's standing in our way? Frog people! There needs to be a reckoning. Who's with me?"

A good night's rest is the cure to a great many ailments. Indeed, he feels invigorated and ready to chase after the frog people. Rhys hungrily tears into a hunk of bread as he listens to the discussion. When there's a natural gap for him to speak up - he does.

"Time's a-wastin' the longer we talk. Might be they're dead already."
he shrugs then raises a wry eyebrow at the rabble-rouser, "Anyhow, I don't see how heading deeper into the swamp gets us out, Annika."

He swipes his hands together, shaking off any lingering crumbs before continuing on.

"Reckon we should let Rada and these fellows arm themselves. Fortify this encampment while those of us willing to take the fight to their lair does so. If we aren't back by some agreed time, might be we are dead too, and they should take off for civilized territory."

Once again, Melianne appears at the meeting later than anyone else - but in her defense, she spent a good part of the night staying up to clean her waterlogged belongings, making sure that her instruments are properly strung and that her tinderbox and clothes have dried. Or maybe it was just an excuse, and in truth the dancer was terrified of going to sleep in a frog-filled swamp, in the middle of nowhere, by the people she didn't know...

Now, she slips behind everyone else, sitting down cross-legged on a dry patch of ground and listening to the discussion while twirling her hair. She had already grabbed a bite from her rations, preferring to do so alone, but the conversation seemed important enough to approach. Now, if only everyone else didn't look at her as often as the mercenaries when speaking about further plans... Do they think that she is qualified to be in a rescue mission? Or that she is a part of whatever hired force "Jolly Wanderer" had for protection?

When yet another of the passengers expectantly glances her way, Firebird sighs and shifts towards the closest of the yesterday's group, who happens to be Solra, in an attempt to hide behind her. Trying to justify the movement, she remembers what the dwarf have said and hesitantly offers: "Aren't the ruins just further down the river? We can simply follow it and wait by them, and once you rescue the captured folk you can follow the same way... Maybe my lights can act as a beacon in case we change the route." Melianne taps her chin in thought.

Solra responds to Melianne but it is more like she is talking to herself than to Melianne, "Yeah the ruins and the base camp are somewhere south of us but we have no idea how far nor what lies in between. Further we do not actually know who or what was behind what happened to the boat. I mean considering how weak those frog folk seemed, I highly doubt they caused that much water to magically disappear. So unless they have a powerful frog spell caster that just cast one spell and left his minions to collect the wreckage, we have some other unknown adversary which may just be in the direction of the ruins. Further we are going most likely need every able body with any talent, to help with the rescue if we want any chance of success. I do not like Rhys' plan but really all-things-considered there are not any other real options." She then looks at Melianne and says to her, "As for you my friend your talents could prove to be invaluable when it comes to rescuing the others that were captured so do not count yourself short." She gives a smirk, "Because frankly you are taller than I am."

The man with the bald spot who talked to you yesterday raises his hand carefully and when everyone looks at him he begins to talk.
Erm... We aren't really fighters. I'm an antiquary, I can polish swords but wielding one... I mean I can certainly try
He takes one of the short swords that you found, grabs it with both hands and swings it left and right, more like a bat and not in the way you'd usually wield one.
The others give it a try too, pick up weapons and swing the swords in a similiar way.
Looks like we've got ourselves an army on par with t' friggin' Bridgeton Elite Guard Rada says and shakes her head
But ya'll got the spirit. Maybe with enough shoutin' an' wavin' of ya weapons we can scare those froggys away from their lair. Well as long as they don't have any other tricks up their slimy sleeves.
Rada claps her hands But I guess we won't find out by just sitting here! So what do ya say!? Shall we go an' get the rest of the crew back? After we've dealt with the frog people we can still decide on how to proceed...

There is a big cat with one of what I believe to be human tracks that I saw, I don't know if they are together or if the cat was following the person to be honest. Melianne is taken aback at Solra's... compliment? A double-edged one, seeing as the dancer was trying to do the exact opposite of getting herself involved with the rescue mission, which now would be almost inconsiderade. She chuckles weakly at the height joke, but her mind is not in it as she wonders about what's to happen. "It's kind of you to say so, dear," Firebird twists the end of her silk scarf, wrapping it around her hand in a nervous tic. "But I doubt I will fare better with a sword than these fellows. And dancing isn't a very effective intimidation technique, is it? I remember reading about a tribe which solved disputes in a battle of rhythm and grace, but these frogs didn't seem like the sort..."

She seems to be planning to add something else, probably another argument in favor of staying with the main group, but Korrin's departure startles her and Melianne turns to watch the halfling. She blinks in confusion at his quick explanation, before glancing at Solra and then at Rhys. "A cat? As in a lynx? Or a leopard? And snakes?" Melianne glances down at her dancing shoes in despair, and sighs. "Ah, Solra, I hope your medical talents - or blessings - extend to curing poisons. The last time I was out in the wilderness with venomous snakes, I had to limp for an hour to the closest healer; it was horrible!"

She clasps her hands dramatically, and leans a bit towards the dwarf in a not-so-subtle manner, while innocently looking back at Rhys and Annika. "Should we all follow Korrin? Or wait until he and you, Rhys... scout ahead, was it? It must be dangerous to go alone, with the frogs knowing where we are." Melianne frowns. "But he probably knows better..."

Solra eyes Melianne up and down with a critical eye as if perhaps viewing her for the first time then says, "Sister I do not mince words, I just call it like I see it. For someone who can breathe inspiration into others to conquer their fears you sure do seem to struggle horribly with your own. Get a back bone, being spineless is for the invertebrates."

She listens to Korrin and then to Melianne's comment and replies, "Leopards, Lynxes, and snakes oh my. Well if the snakes be a constrictor kind, then limping on a poisoned leg is going to be the least of your worries sister. They can crush every bone in your body and usually do before swallowing you whole. As for scouting with Korrin, nay this girl," she slaps her chainmail which chinks in reply, "is not the sneaky kind. We will stay with the main group and I agree with Rada," she turns and looks at the others, "Get what weapons you can and let's get moving perhaps you will not need to use them if we show a consolidated group, a force to be reckoned with so-to-speak. So put on your mean face and try to look tough even if you do not feel tough. Just hang back looking tough if any fighting gets started and defend yourself if necessary. Cuz if you do not, then I will kick your butt all the way to the base camp and enjoy doing it every step of the way. Now move!" The playfulness Melianne had heard just shortly before was gone, and from what Solra had said she got the impression she literally meant she would do what she just said she would do if it came to that. Her approach to dealing with folk in general was not one that created comradery but one more that said what you need to fear more is me and not those frogs or any other critter in the swamp. However, Melianne could tell that Solra lacked the talent for inspiring others either with bravery or fear and to prevent her from beating up their charges she might have to do some work of her own to get those to follow what Solra was saying.

Rhys isn't able to prevent the crew from marching to the frog people's lair, raising up a big stink and announcing their arrival with the subtle grace of a bolt to the face. So much for the element of stealth. Reckon the list of dead will get a set of new names by day's end.

He can't guarantee their safety—the potential involvement of a big cat adds further complications—but the outlander will surely do his best. If all else fails, his priority is to keep Rada alive. He's not done with her, not by a long shot.

"Korrin is setting the pace, y'all. Stick together and don't go wandering off." he calls out, watching as the halfing disappears into the swamp. After a certain amount of time has passed, Rhys follows behind - his crossbow readied for any dangers.

While slightly disoriented by the number of people giving commands around her, Melianne nevertheless moves to follow the group, sticking by Solra's side and carefully watching the ground for snakes - venomous or bone-crushing - while subtly cheering up the folk following them. It might be chaotic with so many strong personalities around, but my, she would be lying if she said it didn't tickle her fancy to be among so many strong people. It is a shame that there is a threat of the frog people looming above them, otherwise it would be a much more pleasant trek in good company.

Still, the good company part is here at least, and so Melianne utilizes it fully. She remains pretty much glued to Solra, following after the dwarf like an especially sparkly bodyguard and doing her best to present an optimistic front. Despite what Solra said, Melianne is not an inspiring kind, not truly, she thinks. But she can add weight to others' words by passing orders with a honeyed tongue, and make the dangerous mission seem like a peaceful walk by playfully dancing around the roots and pits in their way. It is all a show in the end, not so much different from one she performs on the scene, and if it can help...

Only once the group is more or less organized - as much as it can be, - and has a steady walking pace, Melianne gets closer to Solra to resume the conversation. "Darling, you seem to be a natural leader! Though I don't think our crossbow-wielding friend appreciated everyone's enthusiasm," she giggles as she tries to walk backwards to look at Solra while moving. "I should find Annika and Rada, and we'll have a proper mission council!"

Korrin leads the group along the tracks he found the day earlier. While you are at the front of the group Rada stays in the back with a watchful eye.
The only sounds you hear are the sounds of your footsteps and croaking. An awful lot of croaking.
Rhys notices that while frogs and toads usually tend to hide on the sight of a humanoid, the amphibians living here seem to just watch you and croak as you go by.
Melianne calls out a few orders but most of the group are more concerned with keeping their footwear on while pulling the feet out of the mud after each step, than with listening to Melianne. Nevertheless they do their best on following you.

Korrin notices that the footsteps are increasingly intersected by other footsteps originating from frogmen too. He slows down his pace and soon some kind of frog people camp comes into sight.
He beckons the group to stop and Rada joins you at the front.
Now look at this. A whole lil' frog town. Cute... she mutters
The frog camp consists of a lot of huts, nearly all of them constructed out of wicker work. Most of them are constructed at the ground level, a few are hanging in the treetops and a rather large building made out of wood and wicker work is standing on stilts in the middle of the camp.
Just as you turn to each other in order to discuss a plan three of the frog monsters, each riding a giant toad, are leaving the camp and coming right at you.
You all (presumably) ready your weapons but before the frog people are in range the middle one dismounts raises its hands and walks slowly at you.
It walks at you until it's about 30 feet away from you. Unlike the other frog people you encountered it isn't armed and it's not wearing armour.
Instead it's wearing... a dress. A red silken dress, clearly not tailored for frog people. A silver necklace is wrapped around the wrist a few times and on the head it's wearing a pair of undergarments so that the eyes are poking out where the legs would usually fit through.
With a loud croaking voice it announces
*Croak* I am Kruux, herald to the great emporer Cuurtinoax XXVII, ruler over the Galicroax swamp empire, collector of many riches, finest and wisest judge, knower of the secrets of the *Croax* Bullywug. The toads *Croak* announced your coming *Croak* to Cuurtinoax XXVII and he sent me, his humble servant, to greet you.
You are invited to *Croak* pay your respect to the emporer and pay the tribute he deserves for your trespassing of his great empire*Croax* As long as you treat the great emporer with the respect he deserves *Croax* your lives are save, so *Croax* don't let him wait

The frog monster bows down until its nose touches the swamp and points its arms at the camp
May 23, 2021 7:49 pm
"Well I'll be... Never seen nor heard nothing like it. I think someone should go see what this is all about, there is too much I want to see right here." Korrin looks around the camp, taking it all in.

"Excuse me, Kruux? Did I say that right? Would it be possible for you to show me around a bit? I have a million questions.

Melianne watches the... herald... with astonishment and curiosity that his approach certainly warrants. Seeing as the frogs back at the river's shore had shown no sign of understanding human speech - neither Rada's, nor her own, - it is somewhat disturbing to observe that this one can not only understand, but speak the common language. Almost without an accent, too.

"Ah, Korrin, before you steal this dapper gentlefrog to show you the lovely sights of this settlement, may I interrupt with a teeny question?" Melianne carefully inserts herself between Korrin and the frog, sending the halfling a quick look which silently asks him to wait. "As much as we'd all love to meet your glorious emporer, it would be terribly crowded with all of us in here - but if we send a representative, we'd want them to bring a fantastic gift - as a sign of good faith, on behalf of us all! You, I see," she eyes the frog's questionable attire, "have a wonderful taste in fashion. Would you advice us on what the great Cuurtino- the emporer enjoys?"

At the constant chatter of the frogs and toads along the way that just sit and watch she checks to see if they will continue to do so if she shoots a few of them, specifically a few of the larger frogs as frog-legs are good eating and she is not all that worried about pissing off frog-folk since she believes they are going to be killing some more of them soon enough.
OOC:
I did not make rolls for Solra shooting some frogs as I did not imagine that would be too difficult but did croaking a few get them to at least start hiding, even though I doubt it will get them to stop making noises? Also about how many can she kill before they start hiding, or if the do not start hiding how many were decent sized frogs that would make for good eating.
Upon discovering the village of froggers riding toads she readies her crossbow and she maintains that aim upon the one approaching. Then is a bit surprised, not by the foppish frog but the reaction of those with her. She grinds her teeth as kowtowing is not her bowl of tobacco in fact she has never liked it. As such she speaks up over her crossbow which is still trained upon that foppish frog, "Okay tell you what, there is a whole bunch of stuff back along the shore-line that you are more than welcome to have and give to your emperor but I would point out we would not be here trespassing had your folk not taken members of our group prisoner. So how about we do this instead you return our folk to us unharmed and we leave peacefully. I am not much interested in meeting with your emperor nor getting a tour of your village nor actually staying in this swamp any longer than I have to but I am not leaving with out our folk and if I have to kill every frog in this swamp to get our folk back I will do that."

Rhys is skeptical of the frog people. In normal circumstances, Kruux would have made for a comical sight if not for the implications that it had taken its clothing from captives.

"Solra has the right of it. Have you all forgotten they tried to kill us but a day ago?"
he says aloud, not caring if the froggies heard him. Unlike the old lady, though, he has no intention of going down in a blaze of futile glory. He glances side-to-side, and behind him - worried about being surrounded.

Melianne barely resists the urge to groan as every single one of her companions - except Korrin - starts advancing towards the herald frog with accusations. Do these people even know what subtlety is? Why let the opponent know what you want to get right away, especially when said opponent is blissfully unaware? They could've gotten in without any noise, found the prisoners and kept the element of surprise...

"These people would get destroyed at the easiest gambling table, I swear," the dancer murmurs in frustration, while side-stepping around Kruux to block his potential escape route, her hand moving to rest on her rapier's grip.

Whenever Solra shoots a frog the other amphibians around it try to hide from her but come out again as soon as Solra proceeds to walk with the group. Solra may have tried to shoot another frog immediately after and for a short while the croaking is certainly quieter but never ceases completely.
The frogs and toads that hide from Solra stop making noises for a while but you were basically surrounded by them, so that even when a few of them stopped the others continued croaking.
Solra managed to shoot seven frogs, each of them a bit smaller than a human fist. Maybe a bit of a snack but not enough for a full meal

Kruux seems to be taken aback by Solra's harsh words, opening and closing its mouth. Just as it raises its hand in order to respond it is met by Rhys' and Annika's accusations while they stride forward.
As most of you advance on the herald at once, the rest of your "army" joins in, striding forward towards the herald screaming and with the swords held high up into the air.

The herald tries to turn on the spot in order to run to its escort which in turn is advancing on you. Kruux wants to hop away but Melianne sidestepped the herald. Kruux wants to hop past her but slips out and lands flat on its belly.
The two toad riders hop into the herald's direction and waive their spears in a threatening manner.

Kruux turns on its back and begins to scream *CROAX* We didn't sink your ship! Strange human was it!*CROAX* *CROAX* Came with stinky cat! *CROAX* Your people are alive! *CROAX* Just had to pay tribute but are in town! *CROAX*
Rada, who previously witnessed Solra's attempts at catching some frogs and toads bumps her with her elbow If yer lookin' for a snack, I'd let it scream sum more. Heard their legs become more tender this way.
OOC:

So for clarification the situation is as follows:

Armed civilians & Solra |10 feet| Everyone else from the group except Melianne |15 feet| Kruux |5 feet| Melianne |30 feet| Two toad riders with spears |100 feet| Frog people camp
May 25, 2021 11:23 pm
OOC:
Okay I am not understanding your response -- Solra did not try to grab them as she has a crossbow in hand and instead shoots them. That be a pretty dang perceptive and quick frog to avoid a bolt.

Also I would place Solra at 10 feet with the rest of the armed civilians as stated she has a crossbow trained on the foppish frog had he not fallen Solra would have shot him. Still as it stands I will roll initiative and wait for the go ahead as she is not going to take kindly to those toad riders threatening Melianne

"Wait, Solra, wait!" Rhys calls out, lowering his crossbow, "If we cause a ruckus, those froggies might harm the captives."

He takes a step back, holding one hand up with the palm toward the frog-people as a gesture of peace. Kruux is a pathetic sight, scrabbling in the mud with its stolen undergarment, but at least he's open to dialogue.

Melianne glances warily behind her shoulder, at the aproaching spear-wielding frogs. Spears aren't the best matchup for a rapier even if they are smaller than usual, and she is also not a particularly good fencer no matter what. So Rhys' intervention is very welcome, as it allows her to back off a little and get herself on the side of the group again; before these frogs get the wrong idea and try to skewer her tender backside. That would be unfortunate, and will certainly ruin her clothes.

"Strange human with a cat?" She muses aloud, watching Kruux's panicked flailing as her outlander companion tries to negotiate with the amphibian. "Korrin, you saw paw tracks back at the shore, right? Did they lead here as well? We might have another opponent lurking around then..."

The dancer shakes her head as if she tries to shake off her seriousness, and waves towards the frogs. "Let us not fight when there is other danger around, gentlemen! I'm sure we can resolve this peacefully, over a cup of tea with the emporer. I'd love to talk with a fellow appreciator of fine fashion and art, while the rest of us are sight-seeing in your beautiful village..." She sends a meaningful look towards Solra.

Korinn sheathes his weapons and turns to face the mob advancing on the floundering frog. Stepping to place himself between Kruux and Solra and Rada in particular.

"Hold yer horses, we have been met by a herald of this Emperor Cuurtinoax and we are apparently in their Empire, perhaps he speaks true that they did not attack us."

Solra did not like how things were turning. She by no means felt that these frog folk were all above aboard but had it not have been Korrin she might have shot him for getting in the way as it is her honor would not allow that. She uncocks her crossbow stowing the bolt and hanging the crossbow over her shoulder once more. Then she unlimbers her axe and mace as she moves up to stand next to Melianne. As she passes Korrin she points her mace at him and says, "Do not make me regret this Korrin, I will protect you but if you risk your life needlessly I may have to cancel the debt I owe you due to sheer folly on your part."

You just said they are in town and had to pay tribute...that would indicate that they have already paid the tribute. If not, then how would they be expected to pay a tribute if they are being held prisoner?"

Korrin motions to Rhys and Solra to take hold of Kruux. Treat him fairly, but it seems we have some bargaining to do. I do not take kindly to double talk. Speak truthfully and consistently with me and I will do the same in turn. Mincing words is not something I take kindly to."

Korrin eyes the 2 guards carefully as he turns to question Kruux. "Now where are our people being held? You may want to think about your answer carefully, my friends seem to have no patience at the moment. Tell your friends that you will be leading us to town and for them to go ahead and make certain that ALL of our companions are fit to move on. You have a strange way of greeting guests, especially guests that had no intent or desire to visit your unknown Empire. Melianne is about to protest her companions' way of negotiation - which is more of an interrogation at this point, - but gets distracted by the new arrival, a bedraggled man who seems like he didn't have a good night's sleep. She inspects him with curiosity, and leaves the group around Kruux to greet him. "Hello there, sir! We are indeed what remains of the "Jolly Wanderer"'s crew and passengers. And the rest of us, it appears, are being held in the clutches of these," she waves towards the frogs, "fine gentlemen."

She offers Shedinn a hand. "I'm Melianne, and it is always a pleasure to see a friendly face. My companions threatening this herald over here are Korrin, Solra and Rhys," the dancer indicates each of them. "And the angry lady at the head of the mob is Rada. There were also some others, like this beautiful lady Annika and a charming half-orc Raskell, but I'm not sure I can see them in the crowd right now... Anyway, please, would you be so kind to help us? You look like the most capable sort," she bats her eyelashes at Shedinn, though the effect is slightly lost as she looks slightly worried about the situation with the herald.

"Ah, you're so noble!" Melianne giggles to herself, before shaking her head to banish any distracting thoughts, at least for now, and leaning closer to Shedinn. "You see, we're technically on a mission to rescue our fellows from the frog village ahead. The frog herald - the one Korrin is currently manhandling, that one, - has confirmed that they are alive and kept prisoners. I was going to charm my way into their good graces, but..." The dancer sighs. "These talks aren't going great, as you see. I'm afraid that the situation is going to devolve into fighting soon, and we will need any warrior to handle it."

She pauses, then sends the dragonborn a quick look. "If a fight were to start, do you think I can stay beside you? I'm not a warrior, merely a dancer, but I'm sure we can make a wondrous team..."

Rhys eyes narrow as Korrin makes an excellent point.

"This stinks worse than the swamps these fellas call home."

A motion at the corner of his vision catches his attention; the silver scales of a dragonborn glints, like the sparkles of sunlight upon the river Galfer, and the outlander tenses—thinking him an enemy—but upon hearing Shedinn's friendly discourse with the dancer, he relaxes his guard.

"A strong-arm is most welcome considering present circumstances. Reckon you'll do better at restraining this fool of a frog than I."

Rhys makes no effort to acquiesce to Korrin's request - figuring that the guards wouldn't take kindly to their herald being manhandled, or froghandled in this case.

Solra looks at Korrin then to Rhys interjecting after his comment about the frog aroma, "I concur with Rhys."

She follows Melianne over to the new guy but when Shedinn responds she says, "Okay shiny, just know you put one finger on her, and you will lose the hand attached to it."

She looks back to the others then says rather annoyed, "Okay enough of these shenanigans, what is going to happen is the farcical frog there," she points her mace at the frog herald, "is going to take us to the rest of the crew and then we are all going to leave peacefully." She walks back over to the frog herald, "Is that understand farci frog? Because if that does not happen then a lot more than these seven frogs," she indicates her catch of dead frogs, "are going to die today, starting with you. So lead on farci frog, I do not want to linger in this cesspool you call a home any longer than absolutely necessary."

Melianne gladly assumes the position by Shedinn, satisfied to have found a potential guard - and such a charming one, too. The shipwreck was worth it, indeed; so many new people. Though it could have done without the amphibian element, or the matter of their fellow companions getting into their slithery hands. Alas, she is sure that they won't leave without a fight; those who liked titles three times longer than their names rarely took well to being disrespected, and the frog guards already seemed on edge...

She is distracted from this train of thought as Solra approaches with a very... decisive comment. Melianne's eyebrows rise involuntarily at the yet another declaration of protection, and she tilts her head. "My, Solra, you know how to make a girl feel special," her voice is teasing, and her eyes glint mischievously again. "Who would've known I'll be safer out in these swamps than ever, with such fierce and strong protectors..." The dancer winks at the dwarf, while simultaneously leaning towards the dragonborn. At least there was still fun to be had in the situation, even if the time was not the most appropriate.

"If there is a whole village of them, I doubt they are going to simply let us in," she murmurs more seriously. "Even with these lovely folk," Firebird indicates the mob still scowling and waving makeshift weapons behind them, "they likely outnumber us. And something tells me they believe in quantity over quality..."

Kruux frantically looks around the group as you all make your demands. It starts to speak but is interrupted by the arrival of the dragonborn soldier.
Meanwhile the toad-riding guards had their chance to catch up to Kruux, still raising their spears into the air. They are about ten feet away from the herald. Kruux raises it's hand(?) and the guards lower their spears
Your friends *Croax* made serious transgression into the empire of Emporer Cuurtinoax XXVII. Without paying the fee for walking here *Croax*. Shipwreck or no shipwreck. Who want to *Croax* walk this land has to *Croax* pay tribute. You can come into the greaty city but sheathe your weapons and pay fine and entry fee.

After a moment of uncomfortable silence Kruux blurts out *Croax* Five silver pieces for threatening the herald and ten silver pieces for entering the great city. So that is nine silver pieces in total *Croax*
Kruux looks at you with its eyes wide open and its hand stretched out

"Hold on Sheedin..." Solra points her mace at Sheedin, "paying extortion and being placed into slavery is not how civilized societies work farsi frog. If you truly are a civilized," she coughs, "empire, then you would know that being hospitable and magnanimous treating foreigners like honored guests is a much better tactic as this will bring much more wealth to your doorsteps than you could ever swindle out of a bunch of shipwrecked foreigners. Further we actually represent four truly civilized and fairly well off kingdoms to the north and upon our return if we were to state that there was a group of very civilized folk down here willing to trade and be friendly things could go a lot better for your folk and your leader as well as yourself. Of course, if we were to return and outline your current focus of banditry I am sure putting together a sizeable force and coming down here to wipe you out as a preventative measure would most likely be, while a less desirable outcome for us and definitely for you and your folk, deemed a necessity since leaving known bandits near your borders is always a bad idea. However, adding another kingdom or empire to the already existing ones would simply be a win for everyone. So tell you what, you start playing nicely with us and we will see what we can do to help make things a win for you and your folk. Just know that I am not paying your extortion fees and if our people are not returned to us unharmed and free to leave, well like I said you are going to be the next permanent casualty then we will work on the rest. I am sure you are quite aware of what our tiny group is capable of already, so just think what would happen if a considerably larger force came down to retaliate for your banditry upon their folk which by the way would only be a small fraction of the military force our kingdom could muster. So are you going to be sensible and work at setting up proper civilized dealings or do we just treat you like a barbaric race of thieves and go straight to war?"

OOC:
I'm really enjoying Solra's breathless and indignant diplomatic flailing. But yes, this is probably more Annika's area of expertise - hopefully the dice are also on her side.
"Your eminence," Annika steps forward and executes a perfect courtly bow, "If I may, what my colleague is trying to say is that we are honoured to be received as guests of his Imperial Majesty Cuurtinoax, and that the hospitality he shows to us and our beleaguered fellows, who have inadvertently trespassed on his dominion, will be a matter of great interest in our respective cities. This is an historical moment for your great empire, and we would hate for its future to be put in jeopardy should we be treated unkindly or unfairly. We will do everything we can to assist you in avoiding any unpleasant diplomatic incidents, and a beneficial outcome for all."

"To apologise for threatening your eminent personage, we shall pay a tribute - not a fine or a fee, if you please, these gauche terms have no place in polite conversation - of the nine pieces of silver you have requested. Further, as a show of good faith, we offer another nine silver pieces for the safe release of our countryfolk." She waves at Shedinn to give the frog whatever silver he already has in his hand. "We trust that this generous gift will repair any affront we may have caused the Emperor or his herald. Please, take us to your master's court."
OOC:
There's a bit of Persuasion, a bit of Deception, and quite a bit of thinly-veiled Intimidation in there. Annika has the same bonus in each, so take this roll as any of the above, or let me know if she needs multiple rolls.

My apologies, Solra , I mean no disrespect, I am tired and hungry and want to help...To be honest I could go for some frog legs right now..as Sheedin smiles.
Jun 4, 2021 4:43 am
Melianne observes the situation quietly, not willing to interrupt the others and already too confused by Solra's spiel about... poiltics? It sounded like politucs, but most of it went right over the dancer's head. She wonders if the frogs understood any of that; who knows, maybe they are more attuned to these things than herself, if they are running an empire here.

Still, she can't help but comment, mostly murmuring to herself: "I don't understand these people. First threats, then persuasion, then threats, then sweet words again... The ways of diplomacy among mercenary folk are truly mysterious." Firebird sighs dramatucally and leans against Shedinn's shoulder. "My brave guardian, do you suppose it will be faster if we just sneak past them while the guards are distracted?.."
OOC:
(...not an actual offer to do so. Yet.)
Jun 4, 2021 6:57 am
Melianne's movement and words causes Solra to glance back and then she meaningfully looks at Shedinn and makes a chopping motion with her axe across her other wrist just to remind him of her promise then softly says, "Personally, I think killing the lot of them would have been a whole lot faster, but I am willing to go the diplomatic route."
Jun 4, 2021 10:13 pm
Your the Diplomatic one, Solra... I like aggressive negotiations, personally.. Sheedinn smiles a frosty smile at Solra as he tightens his grip on the hilt of his axe.. Just give me the word, and its frog leggs for dinner.
Jun 5, 2021 6:57 am
Rhys has long grown fatigued after all the windbags started talking. However, the outlander is wise enough not to make a snide comment during these tense negotiations.

He waits for the herald's reply before deciding on a course of action. Surely the frog doesn't possess the faculties needed to parse the word vomit he has been treated to, but the day is not over yet and it has been one surprise after another.

One thing's for sure, he reckons, we came here to rescue the captives. Insofar as they don't stray from that path...
Jun 6, 2021 7:55 pm
It listens to Solra and becomes a bit uneasy at the mentioning of armies marching into the swamp.
Annika's reasoning on the other side calms Kruux down again and it look with watery eyes as she mentions a tribute.
Kruux's froggy eyes grow even bigger as Sheddin gives him double the silver it asked for.
Kruux quickly wants to pocket the coins but discovers that the dress apparently has none, so Kruux just closes its fist.
*Croax* Very wise to pay tribute. If *Croax* there are other empires the great Emporator Cuurtinoax XXVII will surely want to know about them. You can enter the great city but no waving the weapons.

Kruux turns around and leads the way accompanied by the two mounted guards. As you follow them into the town you are accompanied by four additional guards with spears, the ones Rhys spotted before.

In comparison to the Four Cities this 'town' isn't really remarkable. As you've already seen from afar most of the town's architecture is made out of wicker work. Most buildings are just small huts, some of the frog people also seem to inhabit hollowed out trees. You also spot a few pools in the ground that are crawling with tadpoles. Wether those are the children of these people or just the offspring of normal frogs is not obvious.

As you are led through the town Rada murmurs I'mma sure that t' Four Cities will glaaaadly accept this great town into their alliance. Hehehe

You approach a large building on stilts that's bit more impressive than the others. It seems to have several rooms and at one side there's even a small tower from which one of the frog people looks down upon you. A few stairs lead up to a front porch on which a frog person sits that's bigger or at least fatter than all other frog people. It sits on a throne that's decorated with a lot of shiny objects. There doesn't seem to be any order or artistic intention behind the arrangement.
The frog person itself is draped in a few layers of colorful fabrics and wears a lot of jewelery. Rings, earrings, brooches and the like are fixed at its clothes in a chaotic manner.

You see an elf kneeling at the bottom of the stairs. It's Phann the elf you know from the Jolly Wanderer. Phann is reading from a piece of parchement he is holding
....And from everywhere across the land it can be heard
By the greatest bard and the tiniest bird
That no one can be greater it may seem
than the great emporer Cuurtinoax Seventeen

Phann stands up and makes a bow
I hope my humble poem sparked some joy in your heart, great emporer

Emporer Cuurtinoax XXVII reaches into a crude ceramic bowl beside the throne, grabs a fistful of worms and shoves them into its mouth.
After a bit of chewing it says *Croax* A very good poem. Really worthy of me. You can have double the worms today

At least th' worms hav' more spine than ya! Rada bellows

Phann turns around with his eyes widened in shock but before he can react Kruux hurries forward and communicates with the emporer in croaking sounds. After they are finished talking the emporer leans forward and loudly announces *Croax* So you came for an audience? Kruux said that you paid a worthy tribute so you may speak...
Jun 6, 2021 10:03 pm
Shedinn steps forward, approaches the base of the steps and bows...We come to talk about the prisoners you hold, Great One, about their release

Korrin looks around town as they all stop before the big shiny frog, He is looking for the rest of the crew and passengers from the wreck. He is also assessing the frog forces at the same time, running a tally in his head. As well as guaging the chances of getting to the Emporer himself if things go that route.

Melianne keeps herself close to Shedinn and Solra, still wary about the frogs and their surprising readiness to allow random intruders into the village. Overconfidence? Probably. But there is still a - admittedly little - chance that these amphibians are smarter than they show, and plan nothing pleasant for their guests. Hence, the dancer hides behind her two "bodyguards" while curiously peering over their shoulders at huts and lakes and other sights of the frog village. Almost out of habit, she tries to spot if they have a tavern, or something like it.

And then, they arrive. The throne room is certainly the most impressive sight in the entirety of this settlement, but for all the wrong reasons - like its gaudiness, questionable artistic composition and likely ill-gotten decorations and trinkets. The sight of Phann reading poetry to the worm-eating emperor only adds to the picture, making Firebird shudder in discomfort. Thankfully Shedinn summarized their goal pretty well already, so she can gather her thoughts while the... emporer... processes the inquiry.

Korrin currently only notices six armed frog people. The two riding the toads are besides Kruux who is standing halfway between the emporer and you.
The other four are standing around the group. On the way into the town Korrin noticed no other armed frogs per se but he occasionally saw spears leaning against trees so he assumes that a few frog people will at least arm themselves should combat break out. Korrin guesses that about six to ten additional frog people will turn up but they will need a bit of time to come to your aid.

Shedinn looks around. He has been ambushed before and should be able to recognize any signs of sudden violence. But currently he doesn't see any. While the armed frop people seem to be vigilant they don't seem to prepare to attack you. The other frog people in town seem to be curious but peaceful.

Prisoner!? *Croax* They are merely here to pay their tribute and will stay here until it is payed the emporer blurts out. You can walk my empire but you have to pay tribute. I'm sure the small towns you are coming *Croax* from have similiar laws.
Are you here to offer a sizeable tribute in...
the eyes of the emporer seem to swell a bit ...shiny material or art?

I'm gonna pay you some tribute with the sole of my boots Rada mumbles. She seems to be relaxed but you notice that her hand is hovering over the grip of her sword

The corpulent emporer has a thirst that can only be slaked by shinies. The outlander cares little for such material concerns; if it can assure the safety of his companions and of the captives - parting with his money is a price easily paid.

He approaches Cuurtinoax with all the caution he can muster—taking care to convey that he means no harm— and providing an opportunity for the greedy frog to have a closer examination. Rhys reaches into his belt pouch, which clinks pleasingly, and holds up a gold coin betwixt two fingers.

"This here shiny enough?"

Seeing Rhys actually managing to catch the frog's attention and bravely ascending the porch, Melianne leaves her post at Shedinn's side and instead follows the outlander - in a characteristically forward attempt to insert herself into the negotiation. The second attempt for today. "Your Excellence, I see that you are a fellow appreciator of art! Say, is it only material works that touch your heart, or are you truly a frog of culture who knows value of a spoken word? I'm sure you are, as you seem to have the most exquisite taste in poetry!"

She twirls with a dramatic flip of her silk scarf. " As a sign of our respect to your empire, would you allow me to sweeten this deal with a performance? I'm sure that you and your people would enjoy a good song and a dance, would they not? The food for the soul is much more valuable than any trinket, surely Your Excellence agrees!"

Interesting so Melianne is just based on a proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation. So is Shedinn planning to do this investigation?
Solra grinds her teeth with all this self deprecation taking place, it was like no one had any self respect. She had no problem honoring someone of nobility but paying respect to basically some over glorified bandit was not her style. As such she was ready should this seeming fool hardiness did not pay off and they ended up needing to start cracking frog heads to teach them why they ought to be friendlier to strangers rather than exploiting them when they are in need of friendly assistance. She was pretty sure the guards were keeping an eye on her as, while she was not waving her weapons about she had put them away either.
Jun 10, 2021 7:27 pm
The mounted guards stop Rhys and anyone else who wants to get to the emporer at the base of the stairs, just before you could reach Phann.
Anyone else is also barred from ascending the stairs.

As the emporer sees Rhys' shiny gold coin it shifts in its chair.
*CROAX* Ahhhh yes you truly are very wise. This shiny coin will be enough tribute for the poet. He may *Croax* walk freely from now on
One of the mounted guards grabs Phann by the shoulder and shoves him towards your group. He scrambles back to you and Rada shoots him a vicious gaze but says nothing

The emporer looks at Melianne and Shedinn as they make their proposal
Ah yes you really seem to be worthy of walking these *Croax* lands of mine. We will watch your dance and then I will set the tribute for all of your people. KRUUX *Croax* *Croax* *Croax*

Whatever the emporer said to Kruux it leads to the herald waving at the frog sitting on the tower who in turn croaks and ribbits.
Within a few minutes a lot of frog people are assembling at the space in front of the "palace"
The emporer seems to give some sort of speech in its language and then turns to Melianne.
*Croax* I just told them that you will dance for my and our honor. *Croax*
All eyes are on Melianne, expecting her to perform...

Melianne sighs in relief when the threat of battle shifts back in favor of merriment and entertainment, - even if the power balance remains questionable and circumstances are less than ideal, it is an improvemewnt. Despite the fact that the audience consists of gawking frogs and a shipwrecked mob, the scene is still familiar, and when the circle of audience forms around her, the dancer finally in her element.

Firebird brightens and dusts her clothes from imaginary dust, before reaching into her satchel - apparently, bottomless, - and pulling out two torches and her tinderbox. Unlike usual torches, these have a metal base and a thinner than their wooden counterparts, their ends smothered in what seems like some sort of resin, and they ignite quicker then expected. "Your Excellence, I hope you don't mind some extra effects in my performance? I assure you, it's quite safe and most worth it." Melianne keeps the torches in one hand as she removes the bag from her shoulder and offers it to Shedinn. "Please watch it for me, would you? Thanks!" She winks at him and returns back to the center of free space.

"My, what an eager public!" Firebirds twirls in place, testily turning the torches in each hand, and watching the frogs' reaction. "But keep your distance, folks, this dance is scorching," Melianne laughs, and starts moving. It's not the first time she has to dance without music - a good thing about fire dancing is that it is always a mesmerizing show. Quite distracting, too..

Rhys is captivated by the dancer's fiery performance, by her graceful movements, and by the hypnotic whirling of her torches; a feat he has never witnessed during his travels as he's not inclined to frequent such places where entertainment can be found. Their current predicament is forgotten, and he becomes but one of many amongst an audience formed around the ethereal space that the dancer occupies.
Jun 11, 2021 11:30 pm
Sheddin takes Melianne's pack in his hand as she winks at him. As he watches her dance with a grace like no other he forgets about how tired and hungry he is. His thoughts fully on her., as he feels a closeness to her almost like she was sent by Bahamut himself.
Jun 14, 2021 6:00 pm
Melianne lights the torches and twirls them into her hands. She begins to turn while doing so.
As she turns faster and faster it looks as if a whirlwind of elemental fire is turning in the midst of the frog people.
She throws one torch high up into the air, catches it with the other torch as it falls down again, throws both of them up again and juggles them.
The frog people watch in awe and this is enough distraction for Annika to slip away. She ducks away behind one of the huts and manages to get away from the crowd. She is standing in the middle of the village and can faintly hear the rushing sound of Melianne's torches as she throws them into the air again.

How does Annika want to proceed?

While Annika is searching the village and the frog people are watching Melianne, Kruux calls out *Croax* You clearly are a master of fire. What else can you master? *Croax*?

Annika tries to figure out which buildings might serve as a jail - sturdy construction, bars on windows, guards, and so on - large enough to hold the remaining members of the expedition. The unfamiliar architecture is confusing, and she realises she has no idea where to start.

Instead, she resorts to simply going from one hut to the next, checking for any obvious signs of captives.

She laughs teasingly, and twirls one of the torches. "I'm afraid fire is the only primal force for this bird; and I'd rather be an ace of one suit than a jack of every. But you got me curious now, dear Kruux! Your people must be the masters of water, are they not?"

Her eyes light up with mischief, and she looks up at the frog "emporer". "Perhaps some of your own talents would like to join my dance, Your Excellence? I am sure that we can learn from each other, and practice is the best teacher!" She tilts her head. "You yourself must be quite a dancer, I bet!"

At the conclusion of the performance, Rhys is momentarily stunned and he doesn't notice that his breath has stilled. The raucous croaking of the frog people's adulation for the dancer eventually restores his wits in full, puncturing his hypnotic-like state - for which he internally chides himself for getting caught up in the debacle.

Rhys becomes intensely aware of his surroundings, and of the reason they came to this so-called empire in the first place. Seizing the opportunity, he strides over to Phann and then tightly grabs the hapless chronist by the arm, dragging him in close for a whispered interrogation.

"Tell me everything that's happened since they took you. Quick before their attention turns to us."

After talking with Rada, Solra checks on the regulars that Raskell has been in charge of to make sure they are still organized and ready should the situation degrade into a small battle. Reminding them that many of the frog folk are no more skilled at combat than they are and to work in pairs if necessary.
Jun 21, 2021 9:14 pm
Annika takes a look at each hut that is accessible by her but she doesn't see any prisoner. As she looks around she doesn't see anything resembling a prison at all. The huts she searches seem to be too small to hold a significant number of people.
Melianne's performance seems still catch the attention of the frog people so she still has time to search around a bit.
As Rhys grabs Phann he let's out a tiny shreek but it is immediatly muffled by Rada who comes to your assistance and puts a hand over his mouth.
Phann's eyes grow large but he relaxes at Rhys' question.
The elf begins to whisper Well... as we came to the shore after this strange incident we were immediatly swarmed by those frog people. We had no time to form any kind of defence and so we were quickly overwhelmed. They led us here and we were put into a pit just behind this "palace". I was able to talk to some of the guards for an audience with the fat frog over there.
I was just trying to come to good terms with this "emporer" of those toads when you barged in...

Phann seems to be glad to see you all and hurt in his pride at the same time
Korrin looks around and notices about fourty frog people who watch the show, many of whom seem to bee children. A lot of the "grown-ups" seem to be hurt. They bear scars and wounds that are not so fresh that they could result from a fight with the crew of the Jolly Wanderer but they also don't look old enough that they are from some battle that took place a long time ago.
Even though they are more numerous than you not many of them bear any arms.
If a battle should break out he thinks that there would be about eight armed adversaries and (if they participate in combat) about ten additional unarmed fighters.
Solra looks at the "army" you have gathered and can only shake her head as they gawk like chicken at Melianne's performance. If battle should break out they surely aren't ready to fight immediatly but they still have their weapons on them so they'd be a distraction at least.

Melianne's proposal makes Kruux think. After a bit of anticipatory gazes from the emporer and the crowd Kruux bows down and says
Let me show you the dance and sound of my people
It jumps into a puddle and ribbits, making the water form beautiful wave patterns in the process. Then Kruux fills its mouth with water, rises its head into the air and spits the water out in a pattern that resembles juggling balls, that Kruux catches with its mouth again.
Kruux walks around, similiar to a rooster and "juggles" the water with its mouth while the crowd ribbits and croaxs with excitement

Not above ground - but surely not below ground? Almost everywhere below ground would also be underwater. Except for...

Her eyes are drawn to the frog-Emperor's 'palace', rising above the other buildings in the village. It's not only taller, it's higher. Cursing herself, she tries to find the quickest way to the other side of it.

I think you forgot to add the second die for advantage, DarkJedi?
Melianne observes Kruux's performance with genuine interest, following him around with a focused gaze while lightly twirling her torches. His movement technique can use some work, but there is merit in good coordination needed to catch the water at correct intervals - with more practice, she thinks that the frog can make a good juggler. Also, he needs a change of attire. That monstrosity of scavenged items is neither practical nor appealing...

Caught in her thoughts, Melianne actually starts following the herald trying to match her own tricks to his rhythm - but she is quickly startled out of it by Shedinn's resolute demand. She moves herself to his side, settling a calming hand over the scales on his shoulders. "Darling, there is always time for merriment, why cut it short?" She winks, but then turns to look back at the frog leader. "But if we must, I believe that the great emporer has promised to negotiate the tribute for our people after the dance. I'm sure that we can come to an agreement without any unneeded violence!"
Jun 23, 2021 3:15 am
Having heard the Dragonborn, she becomes happy that someone has finally come to their senses. Then after Melianne's comment, so as not to lose the initial momentum, Solra chimes in with, "Yeah we can start the negotiations with how many of his people and how much of his tiny village we do not slaughter and destroy based on how many of our people he decides to return to us unharmed."

Rhys frowns as he considers Phann's report, and even more so when he spies Shedinn being foolhardy. Do they not understand that the frog has the upper hand? If the emporer says the word, the remaining prisoners could be slaughtered before seeing freedom. A black mood settles on the outlander as he steels himself for the inevitable.

"Reckon the fat frog won't take kindly to that. Are you of any use in a fight, Phann?"

He slowly reaches for his hand crossbow, ready to whip it out.
Jun 24, 2021 6:16 pm
Annika swiftly navigates between the huts and finds a way to the back of the palace.
She finds a circular pit in the ground that is surrounded by a wicker work fence that reaches to her hip, giving the pit the look of a giant basket.
Carefully she sneaks to the fence and peaks into the pit. It is about 10 feet deep and at the ground of the pit are about twenty people, sitting around and chatting in a low voice. They all seem to have been stripped of their personal belongings. You can spot Captain Forsberg who is in conversation with one of the ship's crew members. Apparently his blue colored jacket was taken as he is only clothed in a grey shirt and matching trousers
A few feet beside Annika a rope is bound to a tree, probably there in order to put prisoners into or out of the pit.
Erm of any use... I haven't thouroughly tested wether I am capable of fighting. I mean I once got into a fist fight with a colleague and I managed to break his hand with my nose... which also broke Phann responds to Rhys' question

Annika breathes a sigh of relief. No guards, no restraints - that's a lucky break.

She gets the attention of the prisoners, and tosses the rope down to them. "Let's go! Able-bodied fighters first. The frogs won't take kindly to you escaping. Arm yourselves any way you can - they've left spears lying around, grab what you can."

(Accidentally submitted an unfinished post at first, if you caught that. XD)
Melianne's grip on her torches tightens, as frustration builds up in her mind. Just when she finally made some progress on getting into these frogs' good graces, her companions had to ruin it with their brutish ways. They could have fought the guards back at their first meeting and then snuck into the village, but no, back then they went along with the negotiations. Yet now, when they are among enemies and at a disadvantage, now is the time to battle?! She might not be a tactician, but something tells her that it's a waste for both sides.

All that said, the dancer doesn't know what more she can do. Shedinn seems absolutely set on scaring the emporer into accepting his terms, with Solra close behind, and even Rhys appears more or less ready to fight - if him reaching for his crossbow is any indication. And Melianne... she doesn't like the idea of fighting the frogs. At least not the civilians, not the ones who gathered here to merely watch her performance. Even if the emporer with a hard to remember name is a kidnapper and his guards attacked them back at the shore, the villagers - as with any monarchy, - are unlikely to have been involved.

So instead of trying to speak up again, to pointlessly try and convince the others to avoid bloodshed - as if any of them would agree to the price of fifteen golden coins, - she slowly steps back from the group. Not towards the mob of the ship's passengers, but instead towards Kruux. Once the attention is mostly on Shedinn and the emporer's stand-off, she leans towards the herald. "Kruux, dear, my friends aren't going to accept your ruler's demand," she whispers to him hastily, while simultaneously snuffing out and packing her torches. "As a fellow man... frog of art and diplomacy, surely you see that this is our last chance to prevent a bloodbath. You need to gather the civilians and hide, before the arrows start flying."

"That's...something," Rhys remarks, "Best if you joined up with Raskell's mob. Try to get in the middle if you can. Avoid any fighting, Phann."

He scrutinises the frog's guards as he waits for the monarch's reaction. If they dare to take a hostile action toward Shedinn, the outlander will fire the first shot at the fat frog. With their leadership dead, hopefully those strange folks will lose their fighting spirit.

Violence is the last answer for the outlander, but the self-styled emporer keeps making outrageous demands, and his instinct tells him that the frog will never be satisfied.

Kruux's eyes go wide as Melianne's warns the frog creature. Kruux lets out a series of croaks and suddenly there is a great ruckus. Kruux as well as all civlians are running away from the area in front of the palace.

While Melianne warns Kruux, Phann runs from Rhys towards your "army" and hides in the middle of the people.

The emporer points at you and with a voice that is so deep that you can feel a vibration in your chest it yells
Guards! *CROAX* Seize the troublemakers. Whoever catches one of the puny humans can keep it as slave!

The two guards that are riding the toads are lowering their spears at you, while the four frog people around you are doing the same.
Your makeshift army with Raskell as its leader is readying their weapons. Fear is written on their faces as they clearly never have been to a battle.
Annika, on the other side of the palace, can hear the turmoil going on and hurries the people to get out of the pit. Unfortunatly only three people managed to get out of the pit at this time. One of them found a spear, the others are unarmed
Annika hurries them but she realizes that she only has the choice to hurry to the fight with three people now, or more a bit later.
Annika is on the other side of the palace. She can reach the others if she chooses the dash action. But she will only be able to bring three people with one of them wielding a spear. She can wait a round to accrue more fighters or can try to get to the other side of the palace right now

The two mounted frog people are in front of you while four frog foot soldiers are at your sides, two at each one. Raskell with his army is in the back and it seems as if the army can occupy two of the foot soldiers, one from each side.
Melianne is at the front, near the mounted guards as that's where Kruux was a moment before. The others are a few steps behind. You can attack any of the enemies you like as the area where the fighting is taking palce isn't very spacious.

Korrin's arrow flies true and hits the emporer in the shoulder who let's out a gargling shriek

One of the mounted guards positions itself in front of the stairs leading up to the emporer, raising its spear, ready to strike at anyone who nears the ruler. The other one hops in front of Melianne and thrusts its spear at her.

At the same time the four armed frog people begin to attack you.

Two of them attack your 'army' under the lead of Raskell while the other two attack Solra and Shedinn.

Ferociously they stab and bite at you all, willing to protect their emporer but apparently they themselves are surprised by the sudden eruption of battle and only one spear attack on Shedinn and one bite attack Raskell find their intended target.

Just in the middle of all this commotion Annika comes storming on with an armed man in tow.

Question about Thunderwave still stands.
Melianne yelps in pain as a spear grazes her side, and hastily jumps away from the frog guards. Her rapier is not the best match for their weapons, both in range and style of combat, and the dancer has no delusions about her ability to withstand damage. So, with as much dignity as she manages, Firebird performs a tactical retreat towards Raskell and his brave mob before anyone can poke more holes in her beloved silk scarf.

This leads to her noticing the return of Annika, and Firebird cheerfully waves at her with the rapier, calling out over the commotion of the battle. "You're just in time! And not alone, it seems? Splendid!" She dives into the crowd of passengers, wondrously avoiding any limbs waving about, and tries to find a position from which she can see the battlefield with minimal risk. There, it would be safe for Melianne to do what she does much better than fighting - play some music. A boisterous tune for the reinforcements, perhaps...

The emporer takes a few steps back and hides behind its throne. From the cover of the throne it mutters an incantation and then hurls a green sphere at Shedinn.

Sheddin has to make a DC13 DEX saving throw. If you are not successful you take three damage.

Shedinn in the meantime hits the mounted guard hard with his axe. The giant toad that the guard is riding lets out a squeak, throws of its rider and runs off into the village, making way for anyone who wants to, to ascend to the emporer.

EDIT:
Shedinn hits his frog-foot soldier with his axe and strikes it down with a swift blow.

OOC:
Sorry guys I made two mistakes with my previous post. At first: Shedinn stood next to a regular frog soldier, not a mounted guard so he struck it down with a swift blow and is ready to engage the next one. I corrected that in the post
Secondly I forgot to process the turns for Rada, Raskell and the army.

I like DeJoker's idea so we'll do it like this:
On your turn you can command Raskell with his army and the spearman that Annika brought with her, as well as any other people who arrive to help. We'll treat Raskell + army as one unit with two attacks, for the sake of simplicity
It takes no action to yell a simple command at them and they can reach any foe. Of course they can only attack once per turn.

@DeJoker If you want to you can make the attacks for Raskell+army for round 1. The spearman only arrived at round 1 so Solra could only command him in round 2

Stats:

Raskell + army:
You make two attacks, one for Raskell and one for his army.

Now that Melianne is more or less safe behind the bulk of their improvised army, she can observe the battlefield in more detail. After a quick look around to determine where she is most needed, the dancer notices their brave warrior friend Raskell go down and gasps, before pointing her hand at him and fiercely whispering words of a healing spell. It's not supposed to help with battle wounds - she's only ever used it for accidental burns and occassional bruises of tavern patrons, - but the warrior looks like he needs any assistance he can get.

Once the last wisps of magic leave her hands and surround Raskell, Melianne turns her attention back to their opponents, hoping that Rada can protect their friend from further harm. With almost everyone engaged in close combat, there is not much Firebird can do without hurting allies - but, she can be a distraction. "Hey, you, the emporer!" She doesn't even need to think as she calls for her magic again, directing it towards the dragonborn.

Seeing Melianne rush to his aid and belittle the Emporer brought a smile to face
As Sheedin takes in the roundness of her face, with a voice as soft as a whisper, She end in says to Melianne.
Thank You,; If I did not know better, I would say you have the blood of a dragon running through your veins
Jul 17, 2021 6:28 pm
Annika's eldritch blast misses entirely, hits the palace, showering the emporer in splinters.

Melianne's words seem to have hit a nerve with the emporer as it holds its head and shakes it.

Raskell, reinvigorated by Melianne's healing spell, stands up and is ready to strike once again.
Rada meanwhile charges the guards that Shedinn is currently occupying and strikes at it with her sword. She cuts out a sizable chunk of flesh and the guards seems to be near death.

The emporer, still under influence of Melianne's words, hurls a flashing bolt at Shedinn but the bolt misses and strikes a tree.
The frog ruler croaks a few words (?) and the two guards at the foot of the stairs seem to get ready to engage you.

Solra runs forward in response and wildly swings her weapons at one of the guards, hitting with both of them. At the moment of impact a flame leaps from her hammer at the guard, lighting the mounted frog soldier on fire.

Two people, a bearded male and a middle-aged female with spears in their hands come running to you from the prison pit in order to aid you.
Both seem to be determined to fight the frog people till the end
OOC:

EDIT: Corrected my mistake of overlooking that Raskel was already healed
Both of the guards are now seriously wounded (one of them is even burning) and the emporer is wounded too.
Shedinn and Korrin are up next.

While the mounted guard can narrowly avoid Shedinn's swing, Korrin's arrow flies true and hits the emporer in the chest. It stumbles backwards, blood flowing from several wounds and from its eyes. You don't think the emporer can take much more damage.

The mounted guards meanwhile swing their spears at Shedinn and Solra. The one attacking Solra is still burning and you can see how the flames create patches of burnt skin on the enemy
While Sheddin can avoid the spear with a small step back, Solra gets hit on the arm while trying to dodge the attack.

Both guards seem to be on their last leg.

Annika hurls another sizzling bolt of energy towards the Emperor, hoping that the guards might stand down if he falls... but mainly because she's annoyed that her last shot missed.
OOC:
Annika really needs some time on the shooting range to hone her skills with Eldritch Blast, apparently. Her sights are way off.

Used the Bardic Inspiration die from Melianne to try to boost that to a hit, but it's still only a 14.

Melianne beams back at Shedinn with a luminous smilre, pleased by his compliment, and moves closer to the stairs. With the reinforcements arriving behind and the emporer's guard falling one by one, the advantage in battle seems to lean firmly towards the ragtag group of survivors, and she feels energized with the victory as close in sight.

"Hey, your frogginess, last chance to surrender!" The dancer calls out to the hiding amphibian with a slightly mocking wave of her hand. "Or are you too cowardly even for that? Unable to face the consequences of your hubris?"

Annika's eldritch blast hits the throne of the emporer and sends shiny trinket that are fixed to the royal seat on their way to floor. While this may harm the emporer emotionally it doesnt hurt it physically.

Melianne's words on the other side seem to have some effect as the emporer shakes its head even harder, blood flowing from its ears. It peeks from behind its cover and hurls another bolt of magical energy at Shedinn before hiding behind the cover again.

The spell of the emporer hits a small hut behind Shedinn and it begins to burn.

In the midst of this mayhem Kruux returns with two frog foot soldiers, armed with spears and crude leather armors and shields.

Kruux announces Cuurtinoax XVII. has only brought war and mayhem over its people *CROAX*
I, Kruux I. will now ascend the throne, free the prisoners and will bring *Croax* peace and prosperity. If you help me I will lead your people to your brethren *Croax* at the dry place

Kruux's soldiers seems to be a bit unsure but are ready to join the battle.

The emporer Cuurtinoax XVII answers.
*Croax* Defeat the usurper and I will not only lead your people out of here but shower you in *Croax* riches beyond your shiny, slimy dreams!
OOC:
The initiative order still stands, so Shedinn and Korrin will go next but you can exchange quick messages (One sentence per turn outside of your turn at most) outside of the initiative order. I'll hold Solra's turn for now as this is a bit more rp flavored rather than just fighting

Korrin stabs one of the mounted guards with his swords. While Rada, Solra and Raskell slay the second one, Shedinn ascends the stairs and before the emporer can say a single word Shedinn kills the ruler with a swift blow from his axe.

Suddenly the battlefield is completely silent and you all wait for another ambush but instead Kruux hurries up the stairs, picks up a few pieces of jewelery from the dead emporer, fixes them to the dress its wearing and then climbs the throne.
From there Kruux declares
*CROAX* I, Kruux I. am now emporer of the bullywug! Cuurtinoax XVII brought death and conflict over us but I, Kruux I. *Croax* will bring peace and prosperity!

Kruux makes a grand gesture towards you and then announces
Your *Croax* prisoners are free to go! I will *Croax* provide you with guides and food and will *Croax* lead you whereever you want to go!

A few of the frog people rally at the area in front of the palace and bow their head.
OOC:

Korrin looks around checks to see if anyone is hurt badly. Once don' with that he ascends the stairs to stand next to the Dragonborn and nudges his leg with an elbow to get his attention.

"Well couldn't you hit him a little harder? I softened him up for pretty well for you huh? Half that kill is mine big fellow. But I must say, ya could have gone for the legs bwahahaha."

Korrin rolls the emporer over and starts patting him down thoroughly.

Melianne lets out a relieved sigh as the battle draws to a close, and hurries back towards the assembled allies to check for injuries and help with her limited medical skills wherever she can. Only once she is satisfied that there is no one else bleeding out among the ex-passengers and the newly freed prisoners, does she turn her gaze towards the toughier of her allies - fussing over Rada and Raskell, then approaching Shedinn to inquire about his condition.

"Are you feeling well, o' mighty warrior?" She eyes the dragonborn's armor where the guard's spear had drawn blood, and lightly touches his shoulder. "Such a fierce fight! You should probably take some rest; doctor's orders!" She winks at him playfully, and then glances towards Kruux warily. "Korrin, dear, are you sure you should be looting a fallen ruler without at least consulting the current one?"

Korrin looks up at Melianne as he continues searching the body. As he looks over at Shedinn and winks, he says.

"Half!"

Looks like the best way to win a battle is with aggressive negotiations.
he smile, and gives a bow to the new emporer
Jul 23, 2021 1:54 pm
Kruux watches Korrin search the body of the fallen emporer. Even though the frog people have little facial expression you can clearly see that Kruux is nervous.
*Croax* Yes, yes. I see you take the reward I wanted to *Croax* give you anyway. A small gift because *Croax* you ended the tyranny of Cuurtinoax XVII.

Korrin finds the following things on the body of the dead ruler:

-A dagger+1
-A collection of various trinkets and amulets, worth 250gp
-A pouch of gold dust, worth 25gp

"Did anyone else... no? Never mind." Annika seems to relax, granted a sense of calm by the knowledge that the greater plan is still in motion and hasn't been derailed by recent events.

"Come. We've shown these folk how the Four Cities deal with tyranny and threats, but we must also demonstrate that we are reasonable and civilised when treated with hospitality and respect. Kruux, may you be a wiser and more compassionate ruler than your predecessor, whose greed and arrogance led to his downfall. And let there be peace between our peoples."
Jul 27, 2021 7:19 pm
Oh yes... *Croax* peace and prosperity. We... we will have both *Croax* Kruux says and then seems to issue a few commands in froggish (?)
A few frog people hurry away and come back with wicker baskets full of dried worms and green cubes as well as some more frog people.
Some more come back with the crew from The Jolly Wanderer as well as some baskets full of clothes and trinkets, undoubtetly taken from the crew when the ship sank.

Kruux gestures you all to go to the area in front of the palace. Kruux forever thankful for bringing peace and prosperity. I *Croax* understand you very busy and have to leave so here is many food and scouts who *Croax* will safely lead you to the dry land to the south. Farewell you erm... *Croax* heroes! Yes heroes!
Kruux makes a gesture with its hand, sits down atop the throne and most of the frog people disperse except for three of them carrying the baskets with food and clothes, and two who are probably your scouts.
The remaing frog look at you in a way that's similiar to a dog who wants you to follow it...
