Character creation

Apr 18, 2021 7:48 pm
Hello and welcome to the game.

Here you can roll and describe your character and ask questions if any arise.

For the attributes you roll four D6 and drop the lowest. You can then assign the numbers to the attributes however you want.

You take the standard starting equipment.

Allowed source books are the PHB, SCAG and XGtE.

A backstory would be nice as I will try to weave them into the story. It doesn't have to be a novel though.
The world is deliberatly rather a framework than a fully fledged settings in order to alow you to make a unique character without paying to much attention to existing lore.
I will add pieces to the world as we progress through our adventure

So if you e.g. want a Paladin from the Order of the Rising Sun, this order can be assumed to exist in this world

If you need any help don't hesitate to ask.

Rollin' dem virtual bones

Results : 8, 15, 12, 12, 13, 10

Not the most impressive but a lot better than some others I have played.

Still like my system of rolling abilities better ;) but rare to see it used elsewhere (3d6) keep 2 add 6 and I still get folks getting 8s every now and again and only a few that actually get exceptional stats.

So will wait on guidance from you as to where to go with this.

Rolling the attributes! Let's see if I get something fun. :D

11, 14, 12, 6, 7, 8? That's fun. Kinda bad, but fun! Also fits my thoughts about maybe making a character who is very new to the whole mercenary thing...

Edit: added a trinket roll for the background. I'll reroll it if it's something too unfitting.
Edit2: this is some impressive coincidence with the d100!

Owe -- 11, 14, 12, 6, 7, 8

Dang I would vote that FlyingSucculent gets another try, assuming they want one, that was nearly horrible

Haha, I don't mind it. XD I think it can actually make for a fun (if not very survivable) character!

And it gave me an idea! What do you all think about a fragile dancer who is simply travelling on "Jolly Wanderer", but gets pulled into the things by pure chance? It will explain severe inexperience with low attributes, and I can pick some supportive class... Oh hey, it can be my first ever bard. :D

Well if you wish to subject yourself to that much punishment by all means.... note you can more easily handicap yourself via Personality which only takes role playing to overcome eventually -- core abilities like that can as you put it be "not very survivable" and I am hoping this is going to be a long running game as there was no mention of a one-shot. Still the GM would have to approve the re-roll and I am not sure what they are have in mind, those Abilities could not only impair your character but they might impair the group. I mean it is not like you have 1 out of 6 bad stats -- half your stats are bad and the other half mediocre.

If the GM wanted to go with a generic approach to it he might let players reroll 1 or 2 stats but you have to keep the reroll this way someone as to consider whether they want to risk a mediocre roll or not and this would help folks like you repair some of the damage the pseudo random generator did to you. Or perhaps the GM sets a minimum average modifier of something like +1 like another GM I am playing under opted for when some players had miserable results.

DeJoker says:

I shall subject myself then, since you're offering. :D
But really, while I wouldn't want to make it harder for the group, I doubt it will matter that much on 1st level. And if this character survives to a level up, wouldn't it be cool? A lot of interesting story possibilities! And even if not, it doesn't mean I can't rejoin with another one later~

Anyway, I'll just wait for Scrol's input; if our GM advises to reroll, I will, but I'm fine with luck not being on my side. It just means it'll watch over me later. :P

Sketched out and submitted a human bard character sheet! Not yet finished, mostly just tinkering around and thinking how to better pursue the dancer theme. Also casually gave them Lucky for a feat, and only after that realized the irony. XD

Edit: finished it up mostly, except for actual descriptions.

Oi those are some nasty rolls here FlyingSucculent ^^

If you want to you can reroll one of them or switch the lowest stat out for a 12.
I'm planning on making this campaign more centered on role playing than on grim survival and combat but it can be frustrating to fail with most of your rolls either way.
But I'm not forcing your hand. If you want a clumsy character who stumbles through the world you can certainly do so ;)

Some decent rolls you have here. Do you already have a character in mind or do you need any help in choosing?

It's rolling time! Let's see what we get.

Not bad. Results: 15, 14, 14, 13, 11, 9.

Howdy, folks! Glad to be here. So let's get those rolls out of the way. Big bucks no whammy~

EDIT: Looks like 15, 16, 11, 12, 12, 10. With my luck, that's absolutely better than expected. I'll mill over some characters and see if I can finangle something.

Nice rolls, Waffle!

So, current thoughts for my class just to see if it might conflict with anyone's choice - Abjuration or Divination Wizard, or Eldritch Knight.

Leaning into a ranged EK concept.

Keep rollin', rollin', rollin'.

Edit: 18, 15, 12, 11, 11, 11. Very nice!

So far it looks like we've got a Bard (kudos for taking on the challenge of such a rough start in life!) and a Fighter (soon-to-be Eldritch Knight). Has anyone else settled on a class?

I'm leaning towards a Warlock.

Changing one is a nice compromise, I think I'll take you up on that! But I'm going to be *funny*, and keep my worst score because I kinda want to have bad Strength as a gimmick. (To be fair, I did pick up prof in Athletics, so as long as I have someone else do actual heavy lifting, it shouldn't be too much of a hibdrance.) And of course, I'll play with luck again! :D

I see a lot of good rolls for other characters, so hopefully my frail bard can at least count on her allies to save her in case of an oopsie. XD

Edit: ooooh, sweet, this is definitely an improvement.

Are we allowed to swap out a skill proficiency from a background? Outlander in this case - I want to switch Athletics for Nature.

Then I get to be a pseudo ranger with survival and nature skills that can cast magic(!).

Queni if the GM is using the PHB per GAW then yes you are as they state that you can swap out Skills as well as swap out Tools/Languages they just suggest you stick to the Backgrounds Theme when doing so.

Great. For fighter equipment, I'm not required to start with any of the items? Otherwise, I might as well open up a weapon shop.

I cannot say what this GM is doing but most of the GMs I have played with on here do allow you to sell back whatever equipment you do not want at book price and buy what you want at book price as long as it is only normal equipment. So I suggest going through and detailing what you get -- what you want to sell -- what you want to buy with that -- and then ask the GM if they are okay with your changes.
