No better time to start a Fallout game, than when there’s gas shortages in the US haha
May 13, 2021 4:07 am
There's our mood setter, right there. Didn't expect to read warnings on how you shouldn't fill your plastic bags with gas this morning...

Thanks for the spot. Looking forward to playing. Still on the fence on wether to pre-order or not. Shipping was costly.
May 13, 2021 2:12 pm
It was :| I had to blow my entire entertainment budget for the month of April to pre-order it and ship it to the US lol. But it was definitely worth it to me

One thing the Fallout 2d20 rule book brings up is having the group world-build together. If you feel comfortable, as I put info in the Setting Details page and whatnot, don't be afraid to share any ideas you might have of things you come up with or would like to see in a Fallout setting based on what I put in there! I'm not gonna promise that everything you tell me will show up in-game, but I can promise you I’ll listen :) You can always send me a PM of ideas or post them here for everyone to discuss!
And if you have any questions about any rules or anything, don't be afraid to ask! :)

The map isn't displaying. Got an error when I try to go to the link.
A couple of ideas for now:
1) Vault - A half-opened vault hidden deep in the swamps. Its interior is a gaping mouth of darkness, swamp water has seeped in and there's a veil of silence around its immediate vicinity. Who knows what secrets or dangers lurk within...
2) Ghoul encounters - Feral ghouls and sentient ones alike. A small settlement surviving amidst the rotten stench of the swamp. Perhaps their numbers are dwindling and they need supplies.
3) Swampfolk!
Oh, and I really enjoy the survival mechanic in Fallout. Is that something the book touches on?

Haha, great minds must really think alike! I already had similar ideas for a similar vault and a high population of ghouls in the area, but I completely forgot about the swampfolk from Point Lookout! That’s good, I will fit them in, both crazed and perhaps a settlement or two of them.
So, one thing I really love about this rule book, is how much of the fallout games they really crammed into it. Anything you see in a fallout game, you can pretty much do in this 2d20 game. Crafting weapon/armor mods and food, scavenging, getting addicted to Chems, it’s all there. The book doesn’t have specific rules for a "survival mode" like the games do, but I feel like if we leaned into all the stuff in the book, it could get pretty gritty and realistic. For example, injuries are easy to come by, detrimental, and sometimes hard to get fixed. And, it has rules for hunger, thirst, fatigue, exposure to the elements, disease. So yeah lol. I don’t wanna sound like a salesman trying to get you to buy the book, but I really love it lmao.
[edit] I just realized all that stuff is in the "Survival" chapter, so I guess you could say it has survival mechanics in it lmao, I initially missed that

That all sounds great! Crafting and Chems especially.
I gotta ask, though, the golden numbers '111' - are these shiny and glossy?
Also, I love survival stuff but at the same time, I'm aware others don't. How does that chapter feel? If it's feasible, I'm throwing my vote for implementing it.
That post-apocalyptic vibe of scavenging for supplies in the wasteland while 'Big Iron' plays is so damn good.

Sadly, I only have the PDF right now, the physical book is still in printing, they haven’t even begun shipping them yet. The date for that is still just "Summer 2021"
I think we should start out without all the survival elements while everyone gets the core mechanics down, so maybe the first one or two acts of the starting adventure, and then we can begin to add in survival elements if everyone is on board with that. But crafting and chems could be considered the core mechanics so I’ll probably give you guys opportunities to try that out whenever you want.

One thing tho, that I really will never check, is encumbrance. I know that’s a big thing in the video games, but I ain’t got time for that. If you would like to keep track of that, power to ya. Obviously, carrying three full sets of power armor on your back is unrealistic, but I don’t care if your .5 pounds over your encumbrance.
May 14, 2021 12:07 pm
I'm fine with that. It all sounds quite good, frankly. Just excited there's a new Fallout TTRPG!
Also, the GM getting to use AP is an intriguing concept. Interested to see how that plays out.

Haha don’t worry. I try to be a benevolent GM, I feel bad when I deal too much damage to a character lol.

Regarding origins - I'm tempted to be either a Ghoul, a Super Mutant, or a Mister Handy. What are the complications with the Mister Handy origin?
Lots of updated stuff to go over! Will watch the youtube series tomorrow. Can barely keep my eyes open.

I guess it's not really that big of a deal, but it changes your hit locations, there's a lot of special things that they can and can't do and they have more choices when it comes to arm attachments and equipment packs and stuff as well.
May 19, 2021 11:48 am
They have freakin' arm attachments? Dope.
I'm assuming skills are the same in the games? I'll probably go Repair, Survival, and Small Guns (shotgun). Any of the origins offer a bonus to those?

That's great, Furmyr!
Also, if anyone hasn't seen the Three Eyed Townie link that aquafina posted, I recommend checking it out. Videos are only around 5-10 minutes. Definitely worth watching to learn the game rules.

May 20, 2021 10:53 pm
Alright y'all, here's a little update:
A lot of my other games have been kinda slow recently (besides Candlekeep, Rage and Queni know lol), so I've had more time than I thought I would to get this game set up the past week. I am going to try to post Steps 4 and 5 for character creation tonight, but I will wait til everyone chooses their origin before I post Step 6: equipment packs, cuz they're based on the origin you chose, and I'm only gonna post the packs that apply to y'all cuz that's less work. Besides that, I believe I have the rest of the core rules posted here, and anything else we're missing, I'll mention along the way.
Tonight/this weekend/early next week also I plan to start posting more setting details so you guys can actually begin to create your characters and ground them in the setting if you so choose. I love character backstories and I love intertwining them with the overall plot, so the juicier the better! For the couple of games I've run here on GP, I've given the players a list of questions to answer for the characters to help flesh them out, so expect to see that eventually too (totally optional, just for those who have the time)!
So, with all that being said, I'm hoping to get the game actually started sometime next week/weekend, let me know how you guys are feeling!

Feelings? You know when dogs get excited they sometimes do tippy taps? Yeah, that's me. Example!
I'm infatuated with playing a Ghoul, but I also wanna be a Super Mutant. Argh.
How's everyone else leaning?

I'm leaning towards a vault dweller or possibly a survivor.

I am going vault dweller.
What does the science skill do?
For a Tagged skill to start, are we allowed to buy 3 levels or only 1, since tagging give us 2 levels?
@ aquafina
I am submitting my character so you can see where I am going with her. Thoughts and suggestions welcome. I have no ideas off the top of my head regarding the experiments of her vault yet.

Here is the official description for the Science skill:And honestly, I’m not sure how useful the Pilot skill is gonna be. It’s used for "driving land vehicles, or pilot flying vehicles", vehicles like vertibirds, tanks, cars, and motorcycles are the examples it gives. The games don’t feature working vehicles except for vertibirds really, and having cars and stuff kinda ruins the whole exploration thing I feel like, it’s almost like fast travel.
During character creation, no skills can be increased above the rank of 3. Tagged skills start at 2 and everything else starts at 0. I highly recommend buying that third rank for all of your tagged skills first.
[ +- ] Science
The Science skill covers academic and practical knowledge, but is practically applied in the wasteland through computer coding, robotic programming, and brewing chems.
Its default S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attribute is Intelligence but you might use it with Perception to observe a test subject, or Charisma to convince people of something using your scientific knowledge. You use Science to hack computers, brew chems, and solve problems with science!

I was leaning towards a Vault Dweller. Someone who has no business being outside, but has found themselves on the outside despite this. An administrative assistant, used to a comfortable job pushing papers, who now is way in over his head.
May 21, 2021 11:51 am
Here's an idea...What if the vault characters came from the same vault?
I'm thinking of going with the idea that my character could have been like a soldier/guard.

That's a badass idea, Squadfather.
Maybe you all stumbled across my character during your first foray into the wastelands. That's group cohesion sorted and also gives our PCs some familiarity with each other.
1) Ghoul - Jack of many trades. A former mechanic before the nuclear bombs dropped. Talks like a dumb hick but is highly intelligent and savvy.
2) Super Mutant - Your classic muscle-bound warrior with a penchant for smashing enemies into a paste. He has a copy of Grognak the Barbarian, and believes he's the reincarnation of Grognak.
I don't want to overlap with skills so probably will go Super Mutant.

Kenzie is a brainy, gadgeteer/hacker
An idea that keeps popping up in my head about the experiments done in the vault, are like the dwellers going through mazes, like lab rats, to receive bonus food/items with electro-shock and other negative reinforcements to train them to various tasks.

Whaaaaat nooooooo. It’s not like that’s directly written in the origin description or anything. Oh wait haha
But I love it!!
I was gonna base the introduction off of your characters, because the story starts off with the mayor of the settlement asking you guys to do something for them. So perhaps you all just emerged from the vault and are trying to assimilate to wasteland living, and the mayor thinks this might be a good way to see if you’re trustworthy or not as newcomers.

Queni found a link to a website that helps guide you through the character creation process. I highly recommend you use this, or at least please use it for the equipment packs so I don’t have to take the time to post them here haha!

On the equipment section of that page, you’ll notice some things near the bottom that don’t change when you switch between equipment packs, those things are from your tag skills. Anything that says d20 or DMG (which just means dF) you can roll here. Because I’m generous, I’ll let the dF just be d6 rounded down, so:
Roll: # of things you get
1 - 2: 1
3 - 4: 2
5 - 6: 3
Once I see what people have, I will start populating the equipment tables and things with the info that you need :)

Thinking of this to explain how the Super Mutant met & teamed up with the Vault Dwellers:
You are all out having a grand old time breathing in air that has a tinge of radioactive flavor and seeing wonders such as the two-headed deer. Maybe you decide to set-up camp under the shelter of a crumbling brick walled building, but shock! horror! Numerous feral ghouls swarm on your position.
It's looking hopeless, but you all hear a rumbling roar - "Me Grognak!"
A Super Mutant with an oversized machete charges in, slashing ghouls left and right. After the battle, he shows you a faded and tattered copy of his namesakes comic.

@aquafina,
What's our vault number? Did it start in 2077? What year are we starting in?
I am trying to get a feel for my character's background. Like, is she a multi-generation dweller or did she spend time in cryo or suspended animation.

Kenzie, the gadgeteer/hacker is tagging Repair, Lockpicking, Sneak, and Science. She is taking Hacker, as her first Perk. She has a high Intelligence and an above average Agility, with all other stats at average.

My security/soldier will be going with Big Guns, Small Guns, Survival, and Unarmed.

I just posted a possible description of the vault that you guys hail from, Vault 36! It is, of course, not final, and anything that you guys wish to change/tweak just let me know! :)
@Rage, the vault closed on the day of the bombs, and has been operational since. I think this game will probably take place around 2290 or so, so it's after the main games and there's potential for me to throw in a random NPC or something from the games haha

The factions and locations posts are not necessary to read, as we will discover everything eventually, but for those that want to, they're there for ya! They might also help with the creation of Queni's super mutant character :) (Locations post coming up in a few)

Kyle probably did well with the brainwashing. It was the evil he knew which he misses now that he's on the outside and everything is new and... ugh... exciting. I had planned on him being an administrative assistant. The shock that all the papers he filed ended up in a shredder didn't shake his loyalty and he is still sure they had a greater plan than his suffering. The betrayal must have stung and is something he still have problem believing. Though he has started to slowly overthrow the conditioning he still gets the need to relieve himself every day at exactly 3 P.M and certain sounds can result in strange behaviour.

I believe Kenzie is ready to go, if you want to check out her sheet. Let me know if there are details I am missing or more background questions.
I made the last Overseer her Uncle Willam.

I am thinking Kenzie is related to the last Overseer of Vault 36. ... its robots ever since. And everything looks great on your character sheet. I think the only thing is that you don't have the second half of the vault dweller origin in your sheet. That's totally cool, just want to make sure you're aware of the second half (the complication/luck point thing) :)
~
I am beginning to put equipment in that thread, so if anyone is waiting for details on anything in particular keep an eye out there! I have reached out to @malkavian, hopefully they are still in it!
And @Furmyr, your character background and stuff sounds awesome!
I don't mind small changes to the character sheet for readability or just if something makes more sense one way than the way I made it, but i think it would be handy to have your hit locations resistances and luck points in there, unless you have a different way to keep track of those things then let me know! :) I posted a sample character sheet here, you just have to delete the apostrophes to let the formatting stick.
When anyone else is ready for me to review your sheet just let me know! I have to put the details of everyone's equipment up, and I have some story things I want to finalize, but otherwise I think whenever everyone is ready with their characters, we can go ahead and get started! :) Cant wait!

Hey guys!
I know you guys may not be done yet, but I went ahead and looked over Queni and Furmyr's character sheets.
Queni, I think everything checks out and looks great!
Furmyr, I noticed a few things with the skills section. Tagged skills automatically start at 2 and can't be reduced. I think you have Barter as a Tagged skill, but it's set to 0. With your intelligence, you should have 15 extra points to spend. So Barter, Medicine, Sneak, and Speech should each start at 2, then you can spend the 15 points to increase any skills however much you want (except that none of them can be above 3 right now). I would recommend increasing all of your tagged skills to 3 first. But otherwise everything else looks great!
Squadfather, how's it coming along? Any questions?
I think I'm ready to start whenever everyone else is, so just let me know! This weekend will be busy for me as it's a holiday weekend and I'll be visiting family, just a heads up.

I have added the character questions to the bottom of Kenzie's sheet and made an attempt to answer them each.
Also, I will be using this color blue for Kenzie's dialog, if that's okay?

Have our characters been able to salvage anything from Vault 36 since our escape from it or did it get completely destroyed and buried?
May 28, 2021 12:59 am
In the chaos of its downfall, imma say you guys were only able to escape with your normal starting equipment and aren’t sure the current condition of the vault. But if that is something you guys want to do eventually, I’ll leave that up to you :) just know that I will probably make it a harder dungeon than the starting adventure.
My plan for this is to run the starting adventure, which contains three acts. Once that is done, I will give you a couple quest lines to follow, but if you’d like, I can leave the direction up to you :)

May 28, 2021 3:24 pm
The game will start with you guys running an errand for FoCo’s sheriff, which shouldnt take too long and you will be back in town soon after. On the errand you might have a chance to scavenge some mod materials and stuff, at which point when you return to town and have a little bit of downtime and access to the workbenches/resources necessary to do so, I will post rules and stuff for how all that works!
May 28, 2021 3:44 pm
And with that, everyone’s characters are ready to go!! You guys can still answer the questions whenever you have time, I will check up on those every once in a while. But expect the first post sometime today!
As a reminder though, I will be visiting family for this long holiday weekend, so I will post the first post today, but probably don’t expect another until Monday night/Tuesday at the latest. :)

They probably know Kenzie is intelligent and can fix things. She was never seen doing menial jobs in the vault. They may even know or heard rumors she was related to the last overseer, Willam.
May 30, 2021 1:55 pm
Link is 28, known to be quiet, and is good in a fight. His family line can be traced back to the military soldiers that were "assigned" spots in the vault. (They were told it was for a security detail, but it was really so they could be part of the experiments).
Due to some rather "extreme" experiments Link is slow to trust most people. Yet, once you've earned it, Link will go to the ends of the earth for you.

Kyle was an ass kisser people pleaser in the vault and he isn't much better now. His 10 year plan included becoming Overseer one day. He enjoys the comfort of Vault life. So what if he sometimes got electrocuted, at least he could be fed if he only took the stairs down and he had a comfy bed even if it meant getting woken up by a siren in the middle of the night just so he could press a red button that did nothing. His one act of rebellion was not pressing it once, and the next day they took away his matrress and that's when the rebellion in him died.
He is slowly getting used to frontier living, but can be a bit miserable about it. But he's good in a pinch, can talk his way out of trouble and he is loyal even though he'll complain about it.

What a great start, I'm apparantly the kind of guy that sneaks away from the group and then fires at my own friends at the first sign of trouble. Sorry I guess

Oh and if he used his 10mm pistol, it has the Reliable quality, meaning it ignores the first complication rolled in every combat encounter! :)

Would you prefer us to total the damage ourselves during combat? It's a bit of pain, but if it makes things easier - lemmie know.
Jun 6, 2021 10:15 pm
I would appreciate if everyone added up the damage totals, but really I don't mind doing it! I have the results of a d6 memorized at this point so it doesn't take me too long. I would also appreciate everyone putting your attacks' Target Numbers either in the attack rolls' description or in OOC in your post, but it's really no big deal if you forget! :)
Jun 7, 2021 7:37 am
Will do!
Also, got a question about the aim action. Are we forced to take the reroll or can we only use the reroll if it's better?
Just noticed the 'AIM reroll if needed'. That answers it, I guess.

I guess looking back at it, the official words are "Reroll 1d20 on the first attack you make this turn." So idrk, but we’ll go with that you can take either roll.
And thank you for the feedback and recommendations!!! But good luck with getting that image outta your head 😋
Apologies for the delay tho, will post the next thing either late tonight or tomorrow afternoon! :)

Also just wanted to make sure everyone is aware that Queni made a post in the Absenses public thread and has had to withdraw from all of their games. Queni you are always welcome back whenever you feel ready to! :)
But for everyone else, how would you like to continue? We can simply continue on with just the three of you, or I can make a post in my recruitment thread and see if anyone else wants to join. I'll leave it up to consensus.

We will definitely miss Queni and our big superhero mutant, DaReal.
With even the rats having more hit points than we do, I am worried only three PCs may have a lot of trouble on their own. Is it possible we could have more than one character as an alternative to recruiting more players?

Did Kenzie find anything cool with that critical success when searching the barn?
Jul 5, 2021 11:45 pm
Unfortunately, critical successes in this system really only helps the group generate AP, they don't really technically have another benefit.
@Squadfather, if you would like to spend a luck point, see the ways to use them here. The uses that could apply here are Miss Fortune and Luck of the Draw. So you could reroll the dice I used to figure out what you were able to scavenge using Miss Fortune, or come up with something completely new to add to what you guys find in the barn using Luck of the Draw. The 2d20 system, from what I can tell, is a much more narrative and flexible system than say, D&D5e. There are no clear cut rules for what can and cannot be added to the scene using luck points, so feel free to be creative or brave! I can always veto a suggestion for what you find, so don't be worried about overstepping or anything. Obviosuly you're not gonna find a whole suit of power armor just by spending a luck point, but perhaps another clue to why he was crazy and off his rocker, or just some extra ammo or a stimpack.
(I don't have anything else planned for the barn, so it's not that I am hiding clues behind the spending of luck points, just FYI)

Sorry. The last few days of my holiday really tired me out. Haven't had the chance to check for a few days. I would rather play one character myself, but wouldn't mind if one of the other players wants to play two characters.

No worries Furmyr!
It sounds like you guys playing multiple characters is the winner! RageRed and Squadfather, do you guys have interest in playing another character still? If not that's okay, I can always send a post out into the interest thread.
If you would like to play as another character, feel free to begin creating one and let me know what you're thinking and we can begin discussing, I probably wouldn't have you join until you get back to town in FoCo, or you can meet one the way back there. :)

Feel better aquafina.
I have finished the build for my second character and submitted her for a look over. I still need to add a bit of background and answer the questions.
As a survivor (mercenary) where would she have come from? The only groups mentioned are The Swarm and the people around Luckville (Casino).

Hey guys, just want to make sure y’all know that I haven’t ghosted, I am still here. I’m just struggling to keep up with real life right now and haven’t really had any time for GP lately. I’m not sure when I might be able to write the next post and help you build your new character Rage, but hopefully soon :)
Jul 30, 2021 7:48 pm
Alright, life is crazy but we must push through lol. I believe my posting rate will still be pretty sporadic for the foreseeable future, but if you guys are okay with that, then I am okay with continuing on :) I had to close another game of mine but I wanna hold on to this one if possible.
And Rage, I will get back to you on your new character some time in the next day or so, but to be honest I don’t have much of the outside world built up too much. Everything in the Setting Details is more or less everything I got at the moment. So if nothing strikes your fancy in there (the swarm, maumee nation, the rocket men, children of atom, etc), you can go ahead and begin creating something of your own or tell me what kind of place/faction you’re interested in and we can start brainstorming :)

Oof, well okay. I apologize to y’all, but I think life has just become too much for me right now, and I have to admit that I just dont have enough time or energy for Gamersplane much anymore. I was really trying to hold out hope for this game, but I think it’s time has come unfortunately.
I have really enjoyed playing with all of yall, and hope to see you guys in future games. When life calms down again, hopefully in a couple months, I hope to start a very short-term game, similar to runekyndig and adam’s vignette games, so that I might actually be able to finish a game lmao.
Anyways, I hope there’s no hard feelings ❤️
I will leave the game open for a week or so before retiring it, or until all of you respond to this post. Below are the links to the game page and forums just in case you want to refer back to them after the game is retired :)

Yeah. The important thing is to take care of you. I saw enough of the system that I could make an infomed decision to buy it (ok, I bought it before I could have an informed opinion, but I don't regret it :P )
