Pondering my next game on GP once my Knave game wraps up, probably in the late summer timeframe. Rather than another one-shot, I'm considering running a longer and more ambitious campaign. I have a couple of ideas on that, and one of them is Free League's very excellent dark fantasy game, Symbaroum.

So -- this is just a community pulse check on that game. Anyone have interest?

I have played in a game and very much enjoyed it, but I am seriously maxed out on games at the moment. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find some interest.

Symbaroum is my favorite dark fantasy setting. I've run a couple games of it, and each time it grows on me.

The system is simple, the Corruption mechanic is awesome, and the setting is rich and deep without being a huge world with tons of history you need to learn about.

Good luck! (And you know where to find me if you need a final player to launch, haha.)

Having played with you before, I'd love to be in a game you're running. And if this runs off Year Zero, like most Free League stuff, it's probably an awesome game. I wish I could fit it in but I don't think I really can right now.
If you don't find enough players, I'll fill a spot (after Qralloq), but I'm sure you'll find plenty of interested people

I would love to be part of a long-running campaign that focuses on dark fantasy. Never played Symbaroum before, but if the ridiculously bonkers artwork is an indication of the overall vibe - I'm interested!

I'd definitely be up for a long term Fantasy game. I'd be a new player though. I have played other games that run off Year Zero.

For those who are too busy / overloaded at the moment -- do bear in mind I'm not looking at launching anything soon, just taking the community's temperature on the setting and genre. Suspect I wouldn't start anything until August or even September.

Couple of notes:

The art (lordy, that art) is really the best way to suss out whether playing in a Symbaroum game is something you'd like. It's incredibly evocative for many, and it will either speak to you and excite you, or you'll be be like eh, next. You'll know when you look at it.

Qralloq nails one of the core things that is appealing for me -- the scale and scope of the setting is limited. This is not multiple continents and fifty nations vying for power, this is less than a dozen factions battling politically, socially and physically in a cauldron from which none of them can escape. It's brilliant, and pretty easy to wrap your head around in terms of understanding what the game world is like.

A mild warning that when I say dark fantasy, I mean it. There are loads of mature themes, there's colonialism, racism, classism, slavery, abject poverty, terrible disease, dark horrors and more -- I wouldn't focus on anything nasty just for the sake of it, but it would be a very adult game.

Lastly, Symbaroum is not a YZE game. It was originally developed by Järnringen, whom Free League then picked up. It's a d20 roll-under system with player-facing rolls, flexible classes, and a fair bit of character customization. It's a little heavier than the systems I normally run, but I think it looks like it will play pretty well in the PbP format.

I have no problems with any of that. When you do decide to put something together, keep me in mind.

In that case, you can note me down as interested. Even if it's not YZE

I'm down if it's in September. I should have a spot available by then.

Cool to see there's some interest. Some motivating art...

The artwork is beyond gorgeous.

@Harrigan, do you intend to run the The Chronicle of the Throne of Thorns? Either way, I'd love to play.

I don't have a problem with dark themes, but I am curious if the players are the good guys in the story? I don't mind a little anti-hero action, but I prefer to be the hero of my story...if you will.

Ohhh Symbaroum. Yes please! This is one of my favorite systems in a really interesting and unique setting. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I've read it fairly extensively and would love to give it a spin!

Looks really cool, I would be interested as well but I have never heard of it before now.

Probably not, but I haven't read it. If it's unbelievably awesome, maybe? I find Symbaroum (and most other non-short-form) adventures a little dense, and I'm generally someone who builds a campaign around the PCs and their connections and interests. I was planning to just homebrew that part of it after the equivalent of session zero, and have several big-picture ideas that could work as more an adventure framework -- like being members of a group striking into the Dark Davokar (rangers, ogre mercenaries, barbarian guides, Ordo Magica explorers, goblin hanger-ons, etc.), being trouble-shooters in the employ of the Queen, being free colonists trying to make your way in the world, etc. Ideas just drip off the pages.

I would say the PCs are the... protagonists. This is absolutely, 100% not heroic fantasy. There's good and evil in virtually every faction, there are more shades of grey than you can count, there are few easy decisions, and consequences for your actions await 'round every corner. This isn't a call for evil PCs without morals -- I have no interest (in this setting) in running a game for a bunch of degenerate murder hobos... but there might be ne'er-do-wells aplenty. The first few Song of Ice and Fire novels aren't far off the tone I'm striking for, in that regard. Grounded, gritty, dark, at times brutal, at times wonderous.
