Lambor's Hold

Belathor considers this for a moment, not even considering a town might be too small for a church. He wondered if this was to be his life's purpose, helping build the town's population and found a proper church, but first it will need protection.

Nodding, Belathor smiles, "If there's anything I can do while I'm here, please call on me. Have a pleasant evening."

Heading to the room he sheepishly enters, "Looks like I'll be bedding down with you folks after all."

"Of course," Murya replies with a smile. "If nothing else, I would love to just talk."
After you've all spent some time to relax after the arduous last part of the journey through the thunder storm, you all one by one make your way up to the room reserved for you. The next day, you'll be able to spread out abit more but for tonight, it's fairly cramped in the small room. You drift off to sleep quickly, for the first time since this journey began, in a warm, safe place. Right?

Secret Roll

A few hours later - the storm seems to have subsided by now and it is quiet and dark outside - all of you, except Narissa, are suddenly woken up by some unexpected noises around you. As somewhat seasoned adventurers in a foreign place, you immediately startle out of your sleep and look around for danger. It's dark so you can barely make out your surroundings but after a second of adjusting to the low light, you all notice something moving in the room with you, something small darting towards Arphaxad on the floor with flittering movements, and you hear a strange, creepy chittering sound coming from multiple parts of the room.
OOC:
I think Narissa is the only one of you to have darkvision, so with her still asleep, this is all you can tell without a source of light.

Narissa is taking one bed. Who else of you is sleeping in a bed and who is on the floor?
Aug 18, 2021 11:45 am
OOC:
I'd assume Belathor is on the floor as a late comer, probably curled up a little too close to Arphaxad.
Aug 18, 2021 1:34 pm
OOC:
I think Taz would've taken the second bed if it was still free when she reached the room. She does have darkvision though, as a half-elf.
Aug 18, 2021 1:40 pm
Ooc: I'm on the floor too I guess
Aug 18, 2021 1:42 pm
OOC:
Unless the beds are tiny cot like things we might get 2 to a bed.

"What the--aaahh!" It takes Taz a second to understand that what she's seeing is neither part of a nightmare nor just a play of the shadows in the room. But when it sinks in, she sits bolt upright and starts hollering for the others to wake. "BUGS! Arphaxad, Auras, Beltathor, get up!"

She thrusts her hand into the component pouch on her belt, and fumbles to find the bit of wychwood there before hurriedly singing out the spell for Dancing Lights. Four globs of magical light manifest right in the faces of the two largest centipedes, hopefully surprising/distracting them long enough for the others to get themselves off of the floor.

Belethor pulls himself up and starts to call on Lathander

OOC:
Casting the Cantrip - Sacred Flame at first opportunity.
Aug 18, 2021 4:31 pm
In the light you create in the room now, you all can see a huge swarm of insects, spiders, centipedes and similar verminous critters all over the floor, coming in from both the window and the door. Two particularly huge centipedes, each about half a meter in length and as thick as a a human wrist, seem to be leading this swarm.
OOC:
Alright, let's go into combat here. Belathor can cast on his turn. I will say you all (except Narissa) are awake now and able to get to your feet and draw your weapons before combat starts. I will roll Init for all of you as well as the enemies. S1/S2 are the swarms, C1/C2 are the centipedes. With your tokens, it should be clear who is who.
On your turn, feel free to update the map if you know how otfbm works. Otherwise, just tell me what point on the grid you're moving towards and I will move you. Quarters are pretty cramped but you can move past each other without need for a roll.

We will go with regular inititative here so everyone acts on their turn. If that seems to drag too much in PBP, we might think of another way for the next combat.
Narissa will wake up on her turn. She is prone until she acts to get up.

Belathor casts down a lance of holy radiance on the centipede closest to him but it curls out of the way, avoiding the damage entirely. The swarm by its side quickly begins swarming all over Belathor, biting at him through his clothes and drawing blood.
The centipede leading this swarm also approaches the cleric and digs its large, mandibular jaws into Belathor's leg. Pain shoots through it and the venomous bite, along with the many smaller injuries all over his body, is enough to make him collapse on the floor.

At the same time, the second centipede snaps its jaws at Auras, digging the venomous pincers into the warlock's skin before she can react.
The swarm coming in from the window climbs all over Arphaxad but are repelled by his scales and their dozens of bites do not cause any harm.
OOC:
That is a total of way too much damage on Belathor who goes down to 0 hit points immediately as he is swarmed by both the swarm and the centipede.
Auras takes six points of damage and will need to make a Constitution saving throw.

With the creature's attacks finished, it is then also Auras' turn

Auras sees the swarms and see the cleric go down cursing she cause her hands to grow ice to the touch and casts dissonant whispers and the attempts to cause the large centipede in front of her flee

Rolls

Con save - (1d20+2)

(9) + 2 = 11

Dissonant whispers - (1d20+5)

(13) + 5 = 18

Damage - (3d6)

(123) = 6

Aug 18, 2021 9:59 pm
OOC:
I don't think you have to make an attack roll for Dissonant Whispers, but even if, that would hit. The Centipede succeeded its save, so it takes half damage (3) and doesn't have to flee.
While the wound inflicted by the centipede burns on Auras' leg, she is able to resist the effects of the poison without sustaining any further damage from it. Auras then whispers a curse at the critter, which is then strengthened and intensified into a small cacophony of overlapping murmurs. The centipede seems to cringe away from the sound for a moment but then catches itself. Despite the obvious damage it has taken, it does not back down.

"No! You get away from him!" Taz barks, drawing her rapier and eyeing the centipede attacking the downed cleric. She leaps off of the bed towards it, and slashes at it with her sword. "NARISSA WAKE UP!" she shouts, at the sleeping tiefling over one shoulder. She sends a bit of magic to help put some pep in the horned one's step. "Help me 'rissa! Help, help me 'rissa!" she belts out, trying to make enough noise to rouse the other woman. ((Also, a d6 Bardic Inspiration.))

Damage (if needed) - (1d8+2)

(8) + 2 = 10

Too focused on rousing Narissa, Taz doesn't pay enough attention to what she is doing herself. As she jumps out of the bed towards the disgusting beast, she stumbles slightly and her rapier misses the centipede, which in return simply clicks its mandibles at her aggressively.

Narissa grumbles and rolls over her crimson eyes open up and she blinks before sitting bolt upright in bed letting out a little shriek. Her hair is tangled in her horns and tumbles down around her pointed ears. She looks at the centipede nearest her head and it's swarm of creepy crawlers draws some magic in through her shoulders and releases it through her fingers. The room cools noticeably as she does so and then she jumps to her feet grabbing her dagger.

Damage to the bug. - (1d6)

(4) = 4

OOC:
If you had to make an attack roll, you'd use the spell attack modifier. For Frostbite, you don't as it requires a saving throw. It's usually (but I don't know if always) either/or
Either way, it's a success and the centipede failed its save
A shiver runs through everyone in the room as the temperature suddenly drops for a moment. When the sudden wave of cold hits it, the centipede attacking Auras lets out a chattering series of clicks as it shrivels up in place. It stops moving and its legs give way as it drops to the floor, unmoving and dead.
The swarm next to it seems to lose some of its cohesion at this. Many of the small vermin break out, seemingly freed from the hive and now only acting as regular bugs would. About half of the swarm still remains on Arphaxad, however.
