Good job 👍

Uh oh! The grell appears to be unaffected by lightning!
That was an inspired idea though, @matmaisan! Laurent is awarded Inspiration even though it didn't work!

Actually 15. Just realized that with Dungeonmania I've done the 14.

Does there appear to be a way through the gate now?
OOC:
Short answer: No.

Long answer:
Berry learned this during downtime:
Quote:
As the for the Seals of Astaroth, you have to dig much deeper. Eventually you learn that Iskandar was constructed on the ruins of a forgotten city, and before being conquered by the Vendian Empire, it had a thriving economy in what the records refer to as "delving" - finding pathways into the ruins and recovering its artifacts and treasure. Astaroth abolished delving in the first month of his reign and spent a year crafting the Seals of Astaroth, which were buried in secret locations under the city in the shape of a pentagram. The seals obscure any access points to the ruins, making it impossible to find even if you knew where they once were. The Seals also obscure themselves. Prominent delvers tried in vain to find ruins or destroy the seals, but none could manage it. The secret of their location died with Astaroth.

You realize that if this information is correct, the location of a Seal of Astaroth could be incredibly valuable to the right people. You suspect the reason that you were able to see it at all was due to the damage sustained to the crystals used to power the seal.
In other words, breaking a single Seal of Astaroth might not be enough to reveal an access point. And locations of access points may or may not coincide with locations of the seals.

And additional information was found by Laurent.

Ok. So it's not a gate. Just a seal. Roger that

In my mind, I conflated the original description to imagine a gate surrounded by the seal. Maybe we should get the heck out of Dodge

- do we still have the purple stone? If it was possible to carry it away, despite its size/weight, Laurent would definitely have tried to.
Whether you mentioned it before or not, if you tell us now that you would have taken one or both of the gems then okay they are on your person.

- the men charging in the warehouse, are they sporting grey cloaks? Since they are coming from the back door entrance they are at the same level as we are, correct? (EDIT sorry hadn't checked those handy maps out yet)
Not all of them are cloaked, and those who are have them in various dark or muted colors, including both grey and black. But they look and act like Bartoz's men (Bartoz owns this place). The black-cloaks that you saw, who probably killed two of Bartoz's men before fleeing through some sort of temporary teleportation portal in the supply room under the stairs, look like they are a different group. Your biggest and really only lead as to the black-cloaks' identity and agenda is the note from The Tribunal.

- I suppose there is a wealth of loose objects weighing less than 5lb in the warehouse (and within 30ft of Laurent) that could be made to fall and cause noise / create a distraction by the use of mage hand? I'm thinking of ways to grant Laurent and the others advantage on their stealth rolls... Tilma and Berry might not need it, but Laurent probably does. I'll roll with advantage, and Len and Jabes can determine if I must stick to the first roll, or if I can pick the better of the two, depending on whether the distraction is possible, whether it is effective, etc. (EDIT Looking at the map, I think his best hope would be to make objects fall in the vicinity of squares I-J/13-14, allowing the party to use the crates for cover, and hopefully attracting the attention of the incoming force to their comrades' cadavers)
Yeah the distraction worked. Good thinking!

First a response,

I was under the assumption that the green orb was still lashing out deadly arcs of electrical energy making its handling too dangerous. I had thought of trying to cover it in a cloak or something but my XXIst century brain told me that it would probably not work. In any case, Laurent would definitely want to carry out the purple stone, despite it weighing 40 or so pounds. He would try to place it in his bag, if possible, or in a sack or something, to facilitate carrying it out.

A couple of further questions:
- does the crane overlooking the warehouse area have any load currently on it, so that if, say, a mage hand pulled a lever, that load might be lowered or — even better — fall on, or near, the Bartoz strike team?
- would it be possible to discern if the door is merely barred or if it is locked/padlocked from Tilma's position at F7? Depending on the answer to that question, a further distraction may be needed to gain us some time.

Dang, things just got a lot more complicated:
- Is the access through the skylights reachable from the upper floor (we lowered through those, right?
Feb 9, 2022 2:36 pm
Yeah the front door is locked. For now.

Yes, you could try to exit the way you entered: up the skylights and away by through the orphanage. Just hope Bartoz hasn't sent men over there as well (if you'll recall, he also owns the orphanage).

Yes, the crane is loaded. Yes, you can attempt to drop the load onto the warehouse floor as using Mage Hand as you described. Let's hope none of the thugs hear you casting the spell (it has a verbal component, correct?). You did manage it just a few moments ago downstairs.

With a deadbolt, so it would suffice for one of us to open the deadbolt (or is it padlocked)? In any case, with folks banging on the other side, I think that path is blocked.

The hand lasts one minute, no? That being said, I've moved out of the thirty foot range it has, I believe. How would we handle casting discretely? With a slight of hand check?

The green crystal continues to send out arcs of energy but you were able to pick it up and stow it without suffering any further harm. It would seem Berry has absorbed a portion of its magic somehow. I wonder what effects that might have down the road?
Feb 9, 2022 9:55 pm
How about hiding, maybe under the beds? or those windows on the south wall?
Feb 10, 2022 8:49 pm
matmaisan says:
Where would the skylight we used be, in terms of map coordinates?
I realize the entrance hall in my map ended up shorter than how Len described it:
Len says:
Berry sees that the sky lights have latched windows built into them. As you approach, you see that there is two men dressed in dark cloaks at the door. One is speaking with Laurent, the other stands behind him. Both have curved daggers drawn. Further down the corridor you see a body of a man lying in pool of blood. The skylights lead directly into that corridor, one above the men, the other above the dead body.
Let's say those access points are above B10 and E10 (marked here with yellow squares). They are about 10 feet up.

I had asked some OOC questions on Discord but perhaps I should just repost them here:
- is it possible to rappel down from the rear side of the warehouse and into the alleyway (assuming there is no one there keeping watch)?
- if so, is the descent smaller than 30 ft? That would allow Laurent to use his mage hand to untie the rope and lower it gracefully.

If the answer to either questions is negative, I'd say we just move through the orphanage with all haste.

Len

Hey matmaisan! I think your characters will notice quickly the back alley is a difficult option for escape. The warehouse double doors are wide open and the bay has a lot of folks searching and watching. Would require some high stealth rolls, mechanically speaking.

The orphanage is a better option. It has sustained some damage in the earthquake, but the large crack in the side of the stone wall will provide easy purchase to scale and the windows are shattered so no worry about them being locked.

Just dropping by to let you know I've had one of the busiest two weeks in recent memory, and could barely connect to GP. Covid again, absurd workload, kid at home, etc. Things are smoothing out now so I'll try to catch up on my IC posts soon. My apologies for holding back the game.
