"I'll take first one. I'm not tired yet." This would give Ax time to think and search the barn and the immediate vicinity for anything useful without the others watching him. You could also tell much about a person by watching them sleep.

"I have to agree with you Arden, about Moer. I didn't get a strong feeling about his loyalties to Emil either. And I'd like to keep my options open, if you know what I mean."

"I do," Arden returns quietly to Aaxi. Lowering his voice further, he gestures with this eyes to Arnd and Swaneke and adds, "And keep one eye on those two, even after your watch. They could prove worrisome."

"Good. I'll take second -- wake me at midnight," he says loud enough for the whole crew to hear.

Rose is more than a little tired. She is very glad when Ax volunteers for first watch. "Wake me when my shift is up." She quickly doffs her armor and slips into a deep sleep even faster. She is used to working hard, but with more varied tasks. Walking all day in heavy armor has worn her out.

Arnd and Swaneke work themselves into the watch. Swaneke refuses to let anyone outshine him in this group.
OOC:
We'll call it 2gp for the group for dinner. It's mostly just root vegetables in stock, and a bit of old bread.
The night passes quietly with the only disturbances being a couple of curious foxes looking for an easy meal. When the sun is up, so is Moer. He bids you a good day and plods out to his fields. "Crop should be ready just before the season's turn. As long as the weather holds it will be a decent yield. Be safe now!"

Once everyone is prepped and ready
OOC:
take your time for that
Swaneke wants everyone on the road asap. "This is nice and all, but we're supposed to be getting provisions back to the city. Let's head out," he says with a rather pushy tone. "We can just cut through that bit f wilderness between farms. It can't be far since they're all just of next to each other." He sets off, then turns and waits expectantly.

Arnd slowly follows after him, looking rather unhappy. "I guess we'd be better off," he says following Swaneke. "I supposed duty calls, but don't you think that there are going to be ambushes out here? You heard Moer. There are resistance militias around.

"You afraid of a bakers and cobblers?" Swaneke shoots back. "They aren't soldiers, and we are. C'mon." Arnd looks resigned to hs fate, and waits for the others to catch up.
OOC:
Well, Arden, is this a test of wills to see who is the senior officer of the group?
Aug 30, 2021 6:43 am
Before they bunk down for the night, Arden fetches water for them all to wash in, relieves himself outside against the side of some outbuilding, and settles in for some shuteye. But he keeps tabs on Rose as she sleeps, making sure she's not bothered by the two men that argue back and forth like children; he trusts neither of them around a young woman. In the morning, after everyone has risen and made ready, he collects the coins for Moer and prepares to lead the group away from the farm just after the sun is above the horizon -- and finds that Swaneke and Arnd have their own ideas.

The squabbling pair are headed into the fields when Arden looks to the priest, the farmgirl and the halfling and shakes his head. He's not for traveling long with these fools if they keep it up, but he calls to them regardless as he walks towards them, ready for the day's travel.

"Arnd. Swaneke -- wait. We won't be ambushed in a pasture, it's more like to be on a road. But that shouldn't steer our course regardless -- we'll need to use those roads, they're faster."

In the distance, two farms are visible, and Arden points at both of them. "I spoke with Moer this morning about who resides in each of those places. One of them is a widow and her family, but the other was abandoned some years back. Perhaps a good place for highwaymen such as those we're talking about to hole up in. I say we check there first. Make sure we're not leaving some threat to Mohr and the widow unattended."

Looking over his shoulder, the dark-haired man asks, "what do you three think?"
OOC:
Hopefully not taking too many liberties there. Just let me know if there's anything I need to adjust and I'll make it happen.
Aug 30, 2021 12:21 pm
OOC:
nah, you're fine. I had envisioned a bit more distance between the farms, but we can shorten that. Dissent among the troops‽

OOC:
Whatever works -- I wasn't thinking they were next door neighbors, but more like a few miles distant, maybe even barely visible.

Arden is right not to trust those two. They are stupid and trouble, a really bad combination. "I wouldn't dismiss bakers and cobblers, Ax says to the two morons. "A large group is more than capable of putting the hurt on us especially in an ambush situation. Arden is right. We should stick to the road for a whole lot of reasons."

Ax didn't think his words would matter. People like that are also very stubborn. "We should get rid of them as soon as possible. Let them go into the fields while we stay on the roads," he says in a very low voice to Arden although he doesn't care much if they hear him.

OOC:
Sounds like a plan from Aaxi. How do you want to break away from Arnd and Swaneke?
Aug 31, 2021 1:04 am
Rose feels a great deal of relief when Ax and Arden discuss ditching the troublesome duo they have been stuck with. At the same time she also feels a small bit of guilt. Here she was, only her second day as a soldier, and she was already turn against her own...

"I hate to say it, but we stand a much better shot of staying alive without those two. Neither of them seem interested in listening to reason." It suddenly dawns on Rose that after those two are gone, she will be the weakest link. She quickly adds, "I may be green, but I'm a quick learner and I follow directions well."
Aug 31, 2021 2:51 am
OOC:
How about a Charisma check to convince Swaneke, and by extension Arnd that they're going the wrong way? I'll have Swaneke roll as well. The lowest number wins. Sound good?
Aug 31, 2021 4:56 am
OOC:
From Arden? I can do that. You're suggesting he try and roll under his Charisma of 14? I ask because there are a bunch of ways to handle this kind of thing in S&W: with no roll at all if the RP is solid and the situation makes sense; using the morale and loyalty systems; using the d6-based skill systems present in a few follow-on White Box games, etc.
"You two," Arden calls to the two men. "This way!" The man points, adding, "We're going this way."

To Rose and Aaxi, he quietly says, "let's just see if they'll listen to reason."

Ax watches with great interest. He doesn't necessarily agree with Rose but he gets her point of view. Nodding at Arden he says, "Don't count on it."

Grudgingly, Swaneke and Arnd fall in with the others. "Yeah, well, you'd better be right," Swaneke says to Arden. The soldier makesa very hostile face, but takes no action.

"After you," Arnd says politely. "You probably know the area better than I do.

Despite everything that's going on, the road appears to be well-travelled. Their are wagon tracks, hoof prints, and signs many people walking along the dirt road. Ironically, you don't see a soul on this pleasantly sunny day.
OOC:
The intersetcion you were near is a "T". You'd strayed a bit beyond the horizontal bit that runs North/South on the map. Which way would you like to go? North or south?
OOC:
I just wanted a quick resolution to what looked like a standoff. The polyhedral equivalent of a coin flip seemed reasonable.

OOC:
Are the houses / farms that I had Arden mention a thing? If so, which direction are they in? If we shouldn't worry about them, I'll randomize it.

OOC:
When I originally concieved of this, they weren't there, but for the sake of the game, it doesn't really make a difference. People don't live this far out from the city, so they could very well just be shacks used by hunters or lumberjacks. There could be people in them, but they likely represent a somewhat transient population. Is that fair? Having grown up in a place reputed for agriculture, even if unfairly, I can honestly say that once you get out to the real fringes where the farms really are, there really isn't anything else. The differences between homes can be substantial, but they still see themselves as part of a "community". That was kind of how I had envisioned this. If we throw a few extra homesteads in, it still works. If it helps the story then I'm fine with it. Go forth and be creative!

OOC:
South it is, then, unless my companions dissent.
Arden leads the group south, but he walks among them rather than in front.

"So what are your stories?" he asks Swaneke and Arnd. "Old friends who decided to join the cause? Are you locals?"
Sep 3, 2021 10:46 pm
Rose is quite pleased with the way things are going. She feels that they have a competent leader and skilled group. They might just live to see the end of the week. Especially if every farm turns out to be as peaceful as the last one.

She cannot help but smirk when Arden asks the other two party members to share a bit about themselves. She immediately makes a bet with herself that Swaneke will tell some exaggerated tale that overvalues his most likely minimal skills and Arnd will reveal very little while being mopey and complaining about how he'd rather be anywhere but here.
Sep 4, 2021 2:45 am
Swaneke just scowls at Arden, but Arnd shrugs and says, "what else was I going to do? Yeah, I'm local. I've lived my whole life in Hoffnungsadel. I don't know if I loved it, but where was I going to go?" He pauses and looks at Swaneke before continuing. "Our rulers, you know, they did great things, but the way they behaved...it was like having a team of kings and queens, but not in a good way." Swaneke cheers him on at this. "No one like it. They were all untouchable, and even if they ran things well, they were awful. When Emil came along, I thought he'd be more diplomatic. I hadn't realized he was ready for war. When fighting broke out, every basically tried to flee, but no one knew where to go, myself included. Rather than get caught up in the executions, prisons, or what have you, I joined Emil. I guess I just thought, one absolute ruler is better than a gang of them."

And then just as he ends, Swaneke starts up, "Nah, Emil is just better. Our city needs a ruler, a true ruler. The clowns in power couldn't stop making buffoons of themselves and us. That's not ruling. Emil, he's going to rule Hoffnungsadel, and I want to be a part of it. I came from the gutter, but with Emil, I'm going to rise. That was never going to be possible with the bastards we threw out."

He still looks angry, but a smile creeps into the edges of his mouth by the time he's finished. After Swaneke finishes, he looks to everyone else hoping for some kind of affirmation that the he'd preached gospel, but stops and squints looking off down the road.

"Is that a person?"
OOC:
Cue Phineas! There's still a fair amount of ground between you all, but it's a space that will be crossed quickly.
