French did initiative +submitted fist round actions, which is correct. I will resolve the action in initiative order. Should all spiders be dead by his initiative for whatever reason, I will ask him for new action.

You could do what you posted on your next turn - after monster turn is over and after Bellow swings hist both axes and Elrond fires his crossbow

And - no you don't need to roll anything. I don't see how would you be able to "fail" to deliver so simple and straight forward message.
It is up to players however how they think their characters react as they understand your opinion.

P.S. I think it is easy to persuade someone that smoking kills, make them stop smoking is not.
