Chapter 2: Into The Temple...

Oct 20, 2021 9:12 pm
Soon after the sunrise the camp springs to life. The thunderstorm did some minor damage to some of the tents and buildings but all in all the camp seems to be in good shape.

You are being offered a generous breakfast along with a hot drink. The ground is still rather muddy and so at first it's difficult to find a dry spot to sit on.
But you are soon recognized as the ones who fought off the savage attack and so a few people get up from a bench and offer their places to you.

After you are finished Korsak along with the other group and some people approaches you. Among them is Astrid, the archeologist that talked to Annika the day before

I hope you are all well fed and ready for the deeds we have to do today.
One thing I forgot to tell you yesterday: As a member of this camp you are entitled to monetary compensation and a share of any treasure you may find. An exception are any scrolls or other sources of knowledge. Those will be brought to the archives in Bridgeton but you can study or copy them here or back at the town. As long as these scrolls contain no dark knowledge like necromancy, that is.
Please be careful and take no unnecessary risks. May Waukeen smile upon you and bless us all

he beams at you, makes a bow and leaves.

Rada, who seems to be in charge of the other group remarks Yeah, be careful. I think th's skellys aren't really th' most hardy but inna large numb'rs they could be a bi' much. So take care.
While yer' playing diggy diggy hole we'll make sure that the camp won't end up as a gnoll feeding station.
she turns to the others and gives a stiff nod to them
Buckl' up! We've gotta long march ahead!
Rada nods at you and the group leaves

Astrid smiles at you like a grandmother smiles at her grandchild. Please come with me. The door to the temple is right over there
she says gleefully.

You are accompanied by four workers and another archeologist, a bearded man with a strict face who seems to be about forty years old wearing a robe similiar to the dark green one that Astrid is wearing.

Astrid leads you to a pyramid shaped building which lower parts are buried in the soil. A big rectangular pit with a ramp inside is in front of the building.
The pit is around 5m/16ft deep and 30m/100ft wide.
The pyramid is flanked by and connected to a lower building which apparently was completely covered by soil. The pyramid has no entrance but the lower building has one. It is barricaded by wooden planks and crates. The sides of the pyramid are inscribed with carvings of humanoid figures.
Most of them seem to depict a humanoid figure holding other humanoids in chains, whipping them or having them bow down to them. While the ones holding power often look alike the ones who are subdued often have a variety of body shapes and size, sometimes the are even bigger than their masters.
The lower building is also inscribed with carvings. They seem to depict some mythical or magical procedures. Some figures are holding strange devices in their hand or are shooting lightnings at from their hands. One of them depicts a humanoid sacrificing another one in front of a circular object that stand on a pedestal.
Astrid points at the barricade.
We barricaded the door yesterday in order to keep any additional skeletons inside. She turns to the workers and orders them to remove the barricade
While they do so the other archeologist approaches Melianne Hello, my name is Hjalmar. Excuse me but are you Melianne the dancer? I think I saw you dance at the Monk's Inn in Zirazund. It was in the winter I think. One or two years ago...
Oct 21, 2021 3:52 pm
Krenmuth studies the carvings, stops at one in particular, then he turns to the others. "The picture of a human sacrifice . . . it is familiar to me. Yesterday, I was blessed enough to receive a message from Valkur the Mighty himself. It was something like a dream but I was wide awake."

"I saw a woman standing on a ship's deck during a storm. She faced a pedestal with a large green gem floating above it, similar to this carving. The woman grabs one of the sailors running by and thrusts a dagger into his heart. The sailor died immediately and the gem, which was flickering, glows brightly."

"It was not fate that sent me to this camp, but Valkur's will. His message was both a warning and an assignment."

Korrin enjoys a hearty breakfast, and a second breakfast to go with it before the moot begins. He only has a couple of questions before they depart.

"Astrid, how far have you gone into the temple so far? And any idea how vast it is?"
Oct 23, 2021 10:56 pm
Melianne greets everyone at breakfast as chipper as a sparrow, her energy replenished by a nice night of rest and an early morning of gambling, and her attitude optimistic and cheerful as she perches on a bench to taste the local fare. She even attempts to flirt with few of the soldiers in their vicinity, and only arrival of Korsak stops her from growing too bold and shifting her attentions on Tenebra and Krenmuth instead.

She heartily says goodbye to Rada and other compainions who joined the other group, and chats with few of the workers on their way to the excavation site, ready to take on the day despite the possibility of skirmishes with the undead and likely deadly traps in their immediate future. She always feels more energized in the mornings; or maybe it's more because of finally not sleeping in a swamp...

"Do you know whom this temple is dedicated to?" Upon approaching the pyramid further, Melianne takes a look at the carvings and frowns: "Suffering and inequality, what a weird thing to immortalize on a wall of a building." She shakes her head and throws back the lock of her hair to see better, while her focus shifts to listening to Krenmuth's admittedly unsettling description of a vision. "And sacrifices!"

She is then distracted by an approaching archeologist, and turns to face him with a pleasant smile, offering him her hand. "Why, hello! I am indeed Melianne, the elusive Firebird - you guessed correctly!" She giggles and bats her eyelashes at Hjalmar. "It's a delight to meet you!"

"All temples are monuments to suffering and inequality. The labour of thousands for the glory of a scant few keepers of the divine mysteries. Though... it's certainly rare to see it depicted so blatantly. I think we can assume that those who built this temple saw the subjugation of others as a virtue, and a sign of their gods' favour. Evidently this seems to have included the power to force eternal servitude, even beyond death." Annika shudders. "That doesn't bode especially well."
Oct 24, 2021 8:06 am
I'm sure these are all terribly interesting to you all and would like to discuss all this and compare notes but I don't see how this is getting is inside the ruin. The longer we wait for dallying about the more attacks will happen at any moment. Wavewarden, the two of us will bring up the front with one of the archeologists. the rest stay in the middle. Whatever is in that ruin, I don't want all our think tanks and workers here biting the dust at the same time. The adventurers can fill in the other places in the line.

After double-checking his equipment, and making sure the others are starting to move Sardonius moved to stand in front of the open pit leading deep inside the ruins. He never took another glance at the pyramid and their carvings, having a full look from a distance before. He was not paid to discern the meaning of those carvings. He was there to make sure the archeologists stay alive.

Delving inside ruins is what Adventurer's do...guess I'll have to have the 'experience'
Oct 25, 2021 5:35 pm
Astrid attentively listens to Krenmuth's story and slightly tilts her head.
Interesting my dear. Some people who work here have told me about strange dreams. Not as vivid as yours but still always with some rather disturbing contents. Until now I've always seen those dreams as nothing more than nightmares that come from the excitement of digging up remnants of an old civilization. Maybe there's more to those dreams after all. We'll see...

As for your question...
Astrid turns to Korrin ... we've just opened the temple when the attack began and soon after the skeletons came pouring out. We had no opportunity to explore any of the temple. As for the size. She points at the width of the pit
I guess the building is rather large. It surely is wide...
And as your friend here...
she courteously nods to Annika ...already correctly stated, this culture does seem to have taken pride in subjugation. So we better be careful.
Scrol sent a note to rpgventurer
Hjalmar blushes slightly as Melianne responds to him It surely is a delight to meet you too. Your visit in Zirazund was a thing we all talked a lot about even af...
Hjalmar is interrupted by Sardonius' orders.

Astrid immediatly joins Krenmuth and Sardonius at the front.
Ah yes... the temple. Maybe we can talk afterward Hjalmar whispers then he smirks at Astrid That's typical for the good ol' Astrid she may look old but in her heart she's still a young adventurer.

The workers clear the last piece of debris from the door. On Scags' command they reopen the doors and quickly run to the side.
After a minute of tense waiting.... nothing happens.
Astrid lights a torch, nods at you, smiles and heads through the doorway.

You enter a hallway that is about 10m/30ft long and about half as wide. A row of stone columns on each side hold the roof.
The ceiling is sparkling in the torchlight. Something is reflecting the light up there.
The floor is covered in a thick layer of dust. You can still see the footprints of the skeletons. It appears as if the skeletons stood between the columns.
On the far end of the hallway is a large doorway with two wings. At the left and right side are two smaller doors.
The door on the left seems to be broken.

Astrid turns to you, her facial expression now considerably more concentrated and stricter.
I'll inspect the columns and the ceiling. You can explore the next rooms if you like...
OOC:
I'll need a marching order from you. As it currently stands Sardonius and Krenmuth are at the front. Who is in the middle and who in the back?
Where do you want to place Hjalmar and the workers?
Oct 25, 2021 8:00 pm
OOC:
Do we want to bring the workers into the temple? The archeologists have useful knowledge but I don't see the workers as much more than future targets.
Oct 25, 2021 9:34 pm
OOC:
I agree, we can always call for them later if there is anything to excavate.
Also I'll stick with Hjalmar, so place us together. :D
Melianne beams at Hjalmar, her ego significantly pleased by the man's fascination, and wraps her hand around his. "Ah, of course, we can't stand in the way of knowledge! Or in the way of our determined Captain Tenebra, it seems," she chuckles, leaning closer to the archaeologist as they follow the others inside the temple and whispering to him: "I thought military men were all about planning ahead and thorough preparation? My, it is going to be an exciting journey with such a group. But it seems that I at least found myself a pleasant company already..."

Once they enter the room, Firebird glances around with mild curiosity and then looks back at her companion: "Are you going to help your colleague here? I'd love to stay too. Perhaps you can tell me more about your research? Or maybe you can use assistance of someone... agile." She waves at the columns. "To climb somewhere, for example."

This is no place for a Wavewarden. It is as unnatural as a skeleton army. The lack of a sky makes Krenmuth uncomfortable, so he focuses his attentions on the safety of the group. He says to the archeologists, "Do not wander away from the expedition party. Your curiosity could put you in mortal danger. We will have plenty of time for thorough examinations and catalogs later."
Oct 28, 2021 12:50 am
Korrin takes in the view of the entrance to the ruin and falls in at the rear of the group keeping an eye on the door and trying to keep track of the group as they move into the room.
Oct 28, 2021 9:42 am
Don't wander off from the group! if one of you archeologist types needs to tinker with something I suggest you don't or make sure it isn't rigged with traps! one arc (shortened from 'archeologist') should always have another armed person with him at all times. We don't know what dangers we will find in here...

Sardonius helped the other workers clear off the remaining debris of the ruins then joined the marching line.
Oct 28, 2021 9:46 pm
The workers seem to be quite happy to be able to wait outside but they are still curious. You can see the sillouettes of their heads against the bright light from the outside

Astrid nods to Sardonius and Krenmuth, acknowledging their concerns. She quickly investigates the room, leans against one of the columns, scribbles a few notes and then says
Well I'm ready to move on. We'll investigate everything more thoroughly as soon as we've secured the ruin.
She points at the large door at the end of the room
This way?

Hjalmar meanwhile investigates the door to the right.
I'd say we take this door first. I want to make sure that there are no skeletons behind the side doors before we venture further.

Astrid around in the room with her eyebrows raisedWell what do our guards say? WHich door shall it be?
OOC:
I made a map that is updated as you explore the dungeon.
Just for future reference. I use left, right, front and back in reference to the door that your PCs used to enter a room.

Annika is torn. On the one hand, caution urges her to search thoroughly and avoid any nasty surprises. On the other, there's something - or someone - here that she's meant to find, and it seems unlikely that they'd be in some minor chamber just off the main atrium. She needs to go deeper.

"Up to you, Captain. Take care, or make haste?"
Oct 29, 2021 9:02 am
"Checking if there are enemies in this room won't take much time," Melianne pipes up, pointing at the side door. "We can just peek inside, see if there is anywhere the undead can hide, then proceed through the main path if there is no one inside. Traps won't chase us if there are any, and we'll know for sure that our flank is safe." She pauses, then mutters mostly to herself: "It would be called flank, right? Military jargon..."
Oct 30, 2021 8:14 am
Sardonius smiled despite himself to one of the adventurers trying to use military terms. Melianne the dancer was called as most of the men and some women who fawned over her said. The woman's words were true there was no immediate danger from their sides in this narrow chamber but it wouldn't hurt to check if each and every door leading to a room was safe and hid no surprises.

Does anyone among you know how to look for traps? I want a thorough and clean sweep of every room around here. I don't want any skeletons in the closet jumping up and slicing our throats while we blunder around deeper into the ruin! No one's in a rush to die here right? Krenmuth you take point and get your shield up! let's move to the left door first!
OOC:
Checking door to Scag's immediate left. Would gladly accept help from someone with good Perception to search for some traps
Oct 31, 2021 12:00 am
"I know how to set traps for hunting, but finding them is not one of my skills or strengths." Korrin continues to follow the group, wishing he could feel the wind blowing, and hear the sounds of the forest instead of shuffling feet on stone.
Nov 2, 2021 4:17 am
"Aye, Caption. Left it is." Krenmuth moves to the side door on their left. "Ready? A door can't be trapped if it's not there." He swings his war hammer at the door, hoping to break it to splinters.

Astrid raises her hand and wants to interject but before she has the opportunity to do so Krenmuth smashes the door.
It flies open, dust rises up and setlles down without any attack or other disturbances.

The open door reveiles a corridor with a door on each side and one at the end.
The corridor is just wide enough to allow two people to stand side by side.

Hahaha... well at least we now know that the skeletons are not attracted by noise Hjalmar jokingly notes...

That's what I am going after...if we're gonna be blundering through these ruins making much fuss especially if we bring in the workers to dig, it's better to see beforehand if these skeletons will react. Now, this corridor...if only we have someone to see if it's trapped. Have to make do then...

with that, Sardonius picked up a small chunk of rubble in the corner then threw it across the corridor hoping it will trigger some hidden trap mechanism.
OOC:
So is there a check for that?

Krenmuth turns to let the rock past him into the corridor, then steadies himself in the doorway, hammer and shield ready. Without turning around, he says, "Everyone please watch you nearest doorway. I don't want us to be outflanked by an attack from another door."

"Outflanked. That's more military jargon for you, Melianne."

Sardonius can't spot any traps or unusual movement of the chunk.
The corridor seems to be safe...

OOC:

If you are just throwing a rock, there's no check involved. The rock either triggers a trap or not.
Usually watching for a trap is a perception roll. I included one for Sardonius.
If in doubt you can always add a roll for a skill that you think should apply. If I don't think that the skill fits I'll just change the modifier

Sardonius almost didn't notice he was holding his breath as the wayward stone made its scouting foray into the empty room. As it clattered to a stop, he waited for a few heartbeats to see if any hidden mechanism was triggered. After a few silent moments, he concluded that the room is 'clear' for now.

Right. now no one's gonna move into that room yet before we check what each door has in store for us. If the adventurers here would be so kind to check the two other rooms near them, I and Krenmuth will go clear the upper right door...
Nov 7, 2021 3:21 pm
Melianne watches the proceedings with a sparkle in her eyes, clearly delighted by the novelty of having military commanders in her group and a chance to observe their mannerism - and learn more terms, thanks to the Wavewarden. She even claps in a playful manner after Krenmuth's mighty blow demolishes the door, impressed by the show of raw strength, and holds her breath as Tenebra checks the corridor for traps. And the moment the captain tells them to check the other doors, she enthusistically turns towards the one to her right and pulls at Hjalmar's arm.

"Come on, mister archaeologist, let's see if there is anything for you to study over here!" She strolls towards the door and cautiously pushes at it, checking if it's open and will allow her to peer inside without crossing the doorstep.

Krenmuth opened one side door and Scags chucked a rock in, Melianne and Hjalmar opened the other side door. Annika was heading for the big door. Which door are Krenmuth and Scags now attacking?

Sorry for the delay. Real life confronted me with a lot of quests :D
Melianne checks the door. It doesn't seem to have any obvious traps or alarms attached to it and so she carefully opens the door a bit. Hjalmar seems to be both a bit scared by the situation and impressed with Melianne's boldness. He lights a torch and wants to light up the room when Krenmuth charges forward and bashes the door open. The hinges give way and the door falls to the ground with a loud 'BANG'

No enemies come out of the room and so Hjalmar enters it. Part of the ceiling collapsed and the back of the room is filled with soil from above. He strides around in the room until he makes a hissing noise. Ouch! Seems like some kind of execution or sacrifice took place here.
He points at a pile of headless skeletons and another pile of skulls.

Korrin meanwhile carefully watches the room. He doesn't see any enemies but he spots something glittering on the ground. A clear crystal, glittering in the light of Astrid's torch lies on the floor. If Korrin wouldn't know better he'd think that the crystal is even glowing on its own but it remains dark when he shields it from light.

Astrid nods at Annika Bold and determined! You remind me of me when I was younger. Astrid grabs an iron ring that is fixed to the door and pulls as hard as she can but the door doesn't move.
Erm... it seems as if this door is stuck. Could someone lend me a hand? Astrid says in a slightly frustrated way

Annika pulls on the door but it remains firmly closed. It's either stuck or locked. Probably rather the former given the state of the temple's structure
A strong pull you have! Not strong enough unfortunatly. Maybe we can go around the door when we follow this corridor Astrid suggests and points at the door next to Scags OOC: Door number 3

It surely is hundreds of years old. We don't know for sure. There aren't even any legends about it. We wanted to ask the natives about the temple but... you may have noticed we are not on speaking terms. But I'm sure you could charm them into talking with us Hjalmar says and winks before leaving the room
OOC:
So quick update to alleviate any confusion:
I've added numbers to the doors and added a legend explaining what certain features on the map mean.
The doors are:
0 - The entrance to the room
1 - The one that Melianne and Hjalmar just examined
2 - The one that Annika pulled at
3 - The door reaveling the corridor to the west
4-6 - Currently closed

I hope this clears up things

Korrin is used to being on his own out in the woods, the lack of coordination by the group makes him very nervous as he tucks in tight against one of the pillars into the shadows.

"No point going in further than what we are looking at now, this other door could be just another cave-in like the one on the right. Better safe than sorry."

Scags opens the door, ready to smash anything that comes at him. Astrid peers through the door into the corridor. Even though she usually displays a rather calm attitude she seems to be excited at the possibility of enemies waiting behind the door.

Scags makes a step into the room and It is nearly disappointing that no one is in here to attack.

Only a bunch of old shelfes line the walls. A thick layer of dust covers everything in this room, including the contents of the shelves.

Other than that nothing of interest seems to be in the room.

Melianne is quite content staying in the main hall chatting with Hjalmar, trying to needle the archaeologist into theorizing with her about the temple's history and origin spiced with some harmless flirting. But when she hears Krenmuth talking with Tenebra and Annika, she correctly guesses that they encountered no enemies and strolls over to the group, peeking into the new room with curiosity.

"Is that a storage? It looks dusty. I wonder how dust would even get inside if this building was sealed..." She looks up at the ceiling. "Think it's because it's still inhabited by the skeletons? Maybe there is some kind of a secret cult hiding here!" The dancer giggles and walks towards the end of the corridor.

kadeton says:
"Some sort of library? How curious."

Annika brushes past Scags and heads for the nearest shelf to determine its contents.
Annika discovers an assortment of different items, most of them seem to be either of ritualistic nature or common household items.
The former encompasses an assortment of decorated bowls, various scepters and a dagger that's decorated with gemstones. The latter is an asortment of undecorated bowls, mugs, cutlery and various dishes.
There are also some scrolls among the dirt on the shelves but as soon as Annika touches one, it crumbles into a pile of dust.

Scags and Krenmuth enter the room almost simultaniously. As both flank the door Annika enters with her rapier drawn.
A large basin dominates the room. It was probably filled with water at some point but now it's just a dried up shallow pit in the ground that is lined with turquoise gems.

Pictures are carved into the walls that depict people carrying vases full of water to the basin. Some seem to command over them and carry whips

There are shard strewn across the floor and skeletons lie on the ground.

Melianne examines the door for a few moments, expecting someone to join her sooner or later - but in the end her curiosity wins over her patience, and she takes a few steps back to look into the newly opened room. "Engravings and skeletons aside, this is pretty!" She comments from the doorstep, pointing at the basin. "Wonder if it's for recreation or some sort of a ritual... Hey Hjalmar, you can look at these scrolls later, come explore with me!"

She pries the archaeologist away from the storage space, and tugs him towards the last door; quite boldly, now that she has seen no living - or un-living - being in any of the rooms. She does at least takes caution to push at the door slowly, planning to peek inside while there is barely a gap between the door and its frame.

The former mercenary captain nudged a steel-capped toe into one of the ancient bones lying in the room. If these bones can reanimate and attack them it's better to know now for sure. after a few more prodding here and there it was decided the bones won't rise up. As a precaution, Sardonius asked Krenmuth to bless these bones to make sure they stay dead...

Before joining Scags in front of door #6, he addresses the party, "Pits can contain clues to what they were used for. Let's not forget to examine it after we make sure this area is safe."

When he reaches Scags, he says, "There is no need to skulk in the darkness and I don't want to endanger any torch bearers." Krenmuth casts a Light cantrip on the head of his warhammer.

What..? Erm.. yes.. I guess you are right Hjalmar says to Melianne as she pulls him out of the room

Melianne opens the door at the end of the corridor with hardly any sound. She peeks inside.
A small portion of the room is illuminated by Hjalmar's torch and Krenmuth's shining warhammer.
Rubble covers the portion of the room she can see. Some of the rubble is strewn accros the floor, a bit of it is piled up to small heaps but other than that she can't make out any details. At least she can't spot any enemies
Nov 30, 2021 6:34 am
"Gentle lady, please step aside," Krenmuth says to Melianne. "Evil hides itself well in darkness." He is ready to move in front of her and enter the room.
Nov 30, 2021 10:30 am
Let's move in and clear some of this rubble to see if there's anything the archaeologists would like to look into

With that, Scags sheathed his long sword and started to go to the back of the room where the rubble is thickest and began to sift through it.
Nov 30, 2021 9:54 pm
The group enters the room. Several piles of dirt and rubble cover the floor. Astrid joins you and picks up a few pieces of rubble.
Just as Scags makes his way through the rubble he can hear something in the far end of the room.
Krenmuth holds his shining warhammer high into the air and reveal a large pile of bones in the far edge of the room besides a door in the northernmost wall (Door No 7).
But not only this, he also reveals that some of the bones are actually axe wielding skeletons. One of the creatures still has quite a lot of flesh on its bones.
It lets out a terrifying scream and charges at you along with four skeletons.

Meliannes spell doesn't seem to affect the undead. Krenmuth's call on divine power on the other side at least drives away the ghoul.

Korrin hacks into the hip of the skeleton threatening Melianne and chips away some of the bone there.

Annika thrusts her rapier into the ghoul just before it runs away and a green flame leaps to the skeleton next to Melianne.
Korrin tries to hit the fleeing ghoul but only hits a scrap of cloth that's hanging off of it.

Scags hacks at one of the skeletons next to him. He hits the ripcage, breaking a few rips which flie across the room.
While the ghoul runs away and cowers in a corner of the room, the skeletons attack.
Sardonius is hit by both skeletons, one of them sinking its axe into Scags' flank.

Krenmuth can duck just in time to avoid being hit while Melianne can clearly see where the attack of the skeleton is headed and just makes a step to the side to avoid it.

While Astrid just makes a small step backwards, Hjalmar lets out a series of gasps and grunts as the battle goes on

Melianne isn't familiar with combat enough to pay attention to what is happening on the other side of the rubble pile, but Annika's comment reaches her ears amids the sound of battle and she glances over to see Tenebra retreat behind Krenmuth, visibly battered. Still, the Wavewarden seems like an unshakeable cover to her, so the dancer mentally marks the Captain as relatively out of danger and instead focuses on assisting in combat.

She tries to nick the skeletal ribs again with her rapier before jumping back and lifting her horn to her lips, the loud notes of a war march echoing through the chamber. She attempts to give it a slightly thunderous mood, or maybe a shanty-like rhythm - something that will be fitting for someone whos title is Wavewarden...

Krenmuth, possibly distracted by the shuffling behind him misses his opponent.

Scags takes a few steps up a rubble pile to let Annika pass through.

Annika stabs at the skeleton that Scags previously attacked but ultimativley misses. The skeleton wants to rise its axe to strike in retaliation but suddenly Annika's hand-crossbow lets loose a bolt which shatters the skeleton's skull. The rest of the undead's body collapses into a harmless pile of bones.

Melianne can't really hit the skeleton on front of her but she is able to stir up Krenmuth's spirits

Korrin's axe however smashes the skeleton's lower spine and it snaps in two, inanimate, halfs.

The remaining skeletons swing their axes in wide arcs in order to hit Annika and Krenmuth. Both attacks miss though.

Astrid gives Scags an affirmative pat on the shoulder. While Hjalmar hops from on foot to the other in excitement over the two destroyed skeletons.

Getting enough time to recuperate, the grizzled veteran Scags had enough time to gather his wits and berate himself for getting flanked.

decades of battlefield experience...thrown out of window due to carelessness...I am getting old for this...

The thought stirred something deep inside Sardonius. It was anger pure and seething, like a long dormant volcano now waking up in a rising crescendo of violent fury. To think he almost died because of a rookie mistake...

The volcano erupted.

The former mercenary captain bellowed a ringing battlecry that shook the four corners of the dusty room. With halberd in front, he charged with unbridled rage towards the remaining bone walkers summoning all his remaining strength and anger towards his attacks.

Melianne cheers as Korrin dispatches the skeleton in-between the two of them, and with renewed energy turns towards the remaining undead. The ghoul is still cowering somewhere in a far away corner, not a threat, so the dancer instead pounces at the skeleton engaged with Krenmuth - her own earlier success at dodging their attacks emboldening her desire to show off her fencing skills.

While Krenmuth's attack misses all of his companions hit their targets.
Annika staps the spine of her foe and then finishes it off with a bolt to the head.

Scags pushes himself beyond his limits but it pays off. With two swift blows of his halberd he smashes the skeleton into three pieces.
Melianne's stab at the skeleton pierces the eyesocket of the skull.
Suddenly the battlefield is quiet again. Melianne still has the skeleton's skull dangling from her rapier.
The only thing that is still making sounds is the ghoul in the corner that is scratching on the wall. Time to finish off the last foe...
OOC:
As I'm positive that you can finish off a lone ghoul if you all attack it at once you can just describe how you kill it and what you want to do afterwards.
Dec 21, 2021 12:28 am
Melianne pauses to catch her breath, then blinks at the skeleton skull still stuck on her weapon and promptly yelps, frantically shaking the blade to get the skull off it. The skull slides off, launches through the air - narrowly missing everyone around - and lands down by the wall with a dull thud. The dancer sighs in relief and crosses her arms, expecting the others to deal with the ghoul themselves. Well, unless they actually call for her to join, then she can just throw her dagger at it... or something.

Once they deal with the ghoul, Melianne will look around the chamber and check the piles of stones for anything of interest, then move on to the door in the northern wall to check if it's locked.

Astrid steps forward and admires your work. Well done. I have the feeling that those skeletons were a bit harder to defeat than the ones that attacked us earlier on. But you prevailed she says and affirmatively nods her head.
Hjalmar on the other side seems to be a bit shakey I... I hope that there are not more of those buggers. I mean... they are scary...

Melianne examines the stone piles and you all have a chance to have a look at the chamber you are in.
It seems to have been plundered at some point in the past. You can see that statues and columns as well as furniture have been toppeled and smashed to pieces.
Scorch marks are all over the walls and ceiling.
Nevertheless you can see that this chamber must've been important. In some part the walls and ceiling still have some frescoes painted on them and are decorated with intricate chiseled patterns.

Melianne sifts through the rubble, but she can't find anything of value. Only shards of ceramics, glass and metal as well as splinters of rotten wood.
Annika and Krenmuth on the other side see an amulet hanging from the neck of the slain ghoul.

Melianne checks the door. A small pile of rubble is in front of it but it is quickly removed and the door seems to move easily. If she wants to she could open it.
Dec 24, 2021 5:32 pm
"Aw, Hjalmar, but you have big tough adventurers here to protect you!" Melianne giggles and returns back to the archeologists, catching the man's arm again and pulling him towards the center of the room. "Come on, I want to hear your opinion on what this room used to be. These decorations look fancy, and I think it's the most spacious hall we entered yet... And I found glass among the rubble - that's interesting."

The dancer seems engrossed in pestering Hjalmar - whether to make him relax or just out of natural chattiness, - and displays no interest in opening the new door first. She might have forgotten about it whatsoever for all the attention it receives.

Oh.. I mean I'm not afraid j...just careful Hjalmar stammers. He quickly begins to investigate the room after Melianne asked him about its purpose.

After a while he says This chamber seems to have been important. Its walls are decorated and even though most of the things here are smashed there probably was a lot of fine cutlery and furniture. Maybe it was some kind of big dining hall or an assembly hall.
I can't wait until we have secured to ruin. Then I can investigate this room more thoroughly.

The amulet seems to be made out of bronze, heavily corroded by the years underground. Krenmuth discovers a dull green gem inset in one of the sides. Ray-like markings directed at the gem are carved into the material. Also some glyphs seem to have been carved into the area near the edges but they are too corroded to be read.

If you people are done squabbling over a trinket, there are still other areas of this ruin left to clear out... give that amulet to one of the archeologists here with us. At least they can do something now.

The Captain stood up from being hunched in the corner after the fight with the undead guardians and strode on the next room. Before crossing half of the room, he turned slightly towards Krenmuth: That means fall in step with me Wavewarden...
Jan 4, 2022 4:52 am
Krenmuth wraps the amulet in his former ship's flag and says, "Just securing it, Captain. Then I'm right behind you." When Scags turns forward, Krenmuth shoves the amulet into his pack and follows Scags.
Jan 6, 2022 5:03 pm
Once the soldiers take the intiative and head out into the next room, Melianne - with Hjalmar caught tightly in her grasp, - tails after them, not ceasing her musings about the temple. "A hall like this, and far enough from the entrance! I wonder what ceremonies were conducted here." She scrunches up her nose. "Remembering the engravings, nothing pleasant. Maybe these undead are here for a reason... haunting the place they were sacrificed in."
Jan 12, 2022 9:05 pm
Scags storms into the next room, ready to fend off the next wave of attackers with Krenmuth close behind him.
Instead of undead you find a long corridor that stretches to the east. A large door with two wings is at the end (door No. 10 on the map) and two smaller doors are at the right side of the corridor (No 8 and 9).

While Krenmuth and Scags are wary, Melianne dances into the corridor after the two brave warriors Hjalmar on her side and Astrid close behind.

Korrin murmurs that he heard something and that he'll stay watch in your back.

Hjalmar furrows his eyebrows and holds up a torch to the wall.
Interesting he murmurs Look at the wall. The carvings on it depict some kind of... ceremony. It looks like... I don't know... a manual? But a manual to what? I don't know...
Astrid just looks at the drawings with a stern face, arms crossed in front of her chest.
Melianne notices that intricate carvings line the walls of the corridor. Each carving depicts a scene where an especially detailed figure is performing some kind of ritual or prayers. Sometimes its being helped by other simplier figures. Each picture is enclosed by a frame and below it is a short text written in the same glyphs you saw earlier.

Krenmuth's goal was always to be out on the seas and shores, fighting against evil in Valkur's name. Ceremonial magic inside temples didn't interest him, but he examines the drawings in this room anyway to see if he recognizes the rituals. "Captain, these drawing might say something important."

Jan 14, 2022 7:45 pm
Melianne also examines the carvings, warily inspecting the apparent instruction manual for some undoubtedly questionable magic. "Hjalmar, do you think whoever owned the temple took on apprentices to be trained here? There is little point in a set of instructions if you already know them, so they must've have had some kind of pupils - either that, or they simply liked to have a reminder of their own superiority. Judging by the engravings outside, the latter is almost more likely..." She taps one of the frames with her finger, brushing away what dust there is. "If they were living here, we'll probably find some sort of living quarters soon."

The dancer lingers for a bit, then follows after Annika to examine the next room, tugging the archaeologist along before he has a chance to get too engrossed in musing about the ancient art.

Sardonius glanced at the murals that intrigued Hjalmar and the other archeologists. Again, he cannot make heads nor tails of the drawings. Spending half your life in a fighting line hacking and stabbing people you get paid to kill isn't really conducive to studying ancient wall dood les. He shrugged at his companions comments and positioned himself in front of one of the doors in the hallway.

The mage is right (nodding towards Annika) more clearing, less ruminating. The quicker we clear these rooms and make sure no more bonewalkers are around the sooner you learned men and women can go on to study these ruins...now if you would please form a single line behing me and Krenmuth we'll go to each door swiftly and carefully.

Hjalmar answers: Well they certainly seemed to have been convinced of their own superiority. I don't know if the people here were too keen on passing on their knowledge. If this is a temple it is possible that they didn't live here. But...... he shrugs ... we don't know much about the society here so your guess is as good as mine until we can investigate this ruin more thoroughly..
rpgventurer says:

Krenmuth investigates the drawings. They clearly depict someone who gains power, or the favour of a god but he can't make out references to any existing cult that he knows of.

After Krenmuth finishes his investigation Scags directs him behind him and opens the first door in the corridor.
The warrior and the cleric storm into the room. In the far end they make out a metal construct. Krenmuth is ready to strike it down and raises his hammer which is still shining with a bright light. That's when he discovers a translucent, hardly visibly barrier that stretches across the room and has a light-blue color.
On the other side of the room he recognizes the metal construct as an orrery
Beside the orrery is a stack of wooden crates which seem to be in remarkably good shape.
The floor on your side of the barrier is covered in dust and small debris while the room on the other side is remarkably clean.

Maybe... don't touch it. We could try to throw a rock at it. Or ram it with a piece of wood... he suggests...
Jan 27, 2022 8:04 am
"The room where we fought the skeletons must be on the other side of this wall, right?" Annika pats the western wall of the room. "So if we knocked a hole through that wall a bit further along, we might be able to bypass the barrier entirely. Though I suppose it might also run through the walls in some fashion."
Jan 27, 2022 5:40 pm
"That's a smart idea, Annika!" Melianne bounces on her heels while watching the barrier, though she steps back upon noticing Hjalmar's concern. Maybe there is some sort of a level to disable the barrier nearby?"

If you would like to hack these walls down and potentially also bring the ruins down on our heads then I would suggest you do so after I'm out here... now as you said there are still a couple more doors to check out before you lot go spelunking on some drek...

The old mercenary captain was more agitated than he usually is. dead people rising up to defend a musty ruin. a weird contraption protected by a seemingly magical barrier. This job couldn't be any more weirder. And there's always a threat of another attack from monsters up in the surface.

Busy as a bee. dead as a fly. As the old mercenary adage comes into mind meaning thinking and working too much leads to an early grave.

Sardonius shuddered at the thought and moved to the next door. (Number 9)
Jan 31, 2022 7:39 pm
"Aye, Captain," Krenmuth says as he lines up behind Scags. He coughs quietly, already missing the seaside air of the encampment.

Then he says to the group, "The mystery can wait. This barrier has been here a long time and I doubt if it's going anywhere. I, for one, one would like to clear the area of enemies first."
Feb 1, 2022 7:07 am
"You're not claustrophobic are you, Captain?" Annika's eyes glow softly in the gloom. "You seem grumpier than usual. But yes, I agree that we should tackle this once we know we're secure. I was just thinking out loud."
Feb 1, 2022 8:06 pm
"I'd say he's at about the usual level of grumpiness," Melianne tails after the others, content to bring up the rear in the company of two archaeologists. "But I agree that we should explore the temple further before messing with the barrier... The undead don't make for good research assistants, I imagine. And I'm already tired of all this dust," she scrunches up her nose dramatically. "The faster we're done, the sooner we can get some fresh air again."

The idea of breaking thorugh the backwall is a good one. We'll construct a scaffolding there as soon as we can send in the workers. Then there shouldn't be a too high risk of the ceiling breaking in. Astrid remarks

Astrid and Hjalmar nod approvingly as Sardonius pushes forward.

Once again the cleric and the fighter open the door and are ready to fight back any attackers. Instead of attackers they find the reason that the door in the first room wouldn't budge.
A part of the ceiling collapsed, blocking both the corridor and the door. A few bones are sticking out of the rubble. Wether the bodies were killed prior to the collapse or not can't be determined.

This leaves only one door left to open. It is a large one with two wings. It is decorated with a carving similiar to the ones on the wall.
The humanoid depicted is shown to hover above ground, surrounded by rays of light that come from the sky and its hands.
In the background is a pyramid that also receives rays of light from the sky. Part of the carvings are coated with gold which makes it seem as if the figures are moving due to the flickering light of the torches.

Hjalmar takes a deep breath So... shall we open it... the door?

At the right you can see that the wall partially collapsed under the weight of the soil on top. Hjalmar looks around the room and moves closer to the opposite door.
Suddenly he lets out a scream, jumps back and points at the door.
It... it's moving! he stammers
Scags rushes through the door as well as the rest of you.
You seem to stand in the pyramid. The angled walls are covered in carvings and jewels. At the top a large red gem is hanging from golden chains.
In the middle of the room a stairway rises up to a platform about 2m/6ft. above the ground. On top of the platform is a throne that is surrounded by decorated walls on three sides. And on top of the throne is a body.
It is wrapped in linen bandages. In the right hand is a sceptre with a large green gem on top.
The body stands up, points its sceptre at you and with a hissing voice it begins to speak

Seeing that the creature seems more inclined to talk than to attack, Annika holsters her crossbow and wand and steps forward, hands raised with palms outward. No other exits from this room. If I was supposed to find 'her', then surely this is she.

Keeping her eyes on the creature for any sign of hostile intent, she gives a formal bow. "Greetings, ancient one. We do not mean to disturb your rest, but we cannot understand your speech. Are you familiar with our tongue?"
Feb 14, 2022 9:55 pm
When Krenmuth entered the room, hammer and shield ready, he himself was not ready for a throne room below ground, let alone a throne room with a walking, talking occupant. Before he could decide which spell would best aid their attack, he hears it speak and Annika respond. He hesitates and keeps his eye on the scepter. Maybe Annika can find out its purpose here. Better yet, somehow discover a weakness.

Melianne remains in Hjalmar's orbit, staying by the doorway and carefully watching the exchange between Annika and the undead, who Firebird can only speculate to be the temple's late owner - high priest, or whatever the term would be. At the very least they seem willing to talk, which is a notable improvement over their colleagues from before, but the tone of their voice unnerves her. It sounded like a demand; understandable, if the undead ruler thinks that they are intruders in their domain...

"Neither do I," the dancer whispers to the archaeologists. "It's certainly not Elvish."
Feb 15, 2022 3:58 am
The creature slightly tilts its head and seems to ponder your words. Then it stands up and begins to descend the stairs.

Maybe we can convince them to tell about their land before they decide to remove us forcefully."

And she would try, in another situation - but for now Melianne is wisely waiting to see what her companions decide to do, not trusting her half-baked idea to be the best course of action.

Scags notices how Krenmuth changes position, gives a slight nod and changes position too.

The creature descends the stairs and now stands directly in front of Annika, looking down at her both literally and figuratively
It smells of dust and incense.
It seems to ponder Annika's words. It then hisses: Free citizens? Lost in time? You clearly don't know what you are talking about. If the situation was differently I'd have you all executed at once! But you have proven yourself to be useful by opening the temple. You can also open the palace! I will allow you to serve me and the High Mage
The creature raises its arm and tries to touch Annika's face.

Annika recoils, wrestling with the invasive thoughts. The green flame surges in her mind, burning away the intrusion. Shaking her head to clear it, she says, "I am nobody's servant. But thank you for telling us about the sealed palace - we will be glad to find the way in. Would you prefer to assist us, or be destroyed?"
OOC:
I'd like to give the creature one last chance to reconsider attacking us, but Annika will hold an action to cast Eldritch Blast if it takes any hostile action.

The creature recoils as if it was hit by an invisible punch. It then glares at Annika. She thinks she can see two eyes between the bandages.
It then points its sceptre at Annika
You WILL serve me. The only question is wether you are alive the experience the joy of serving me or not. You have picked the latter...
It begins to swing its sceptre at Annika.

The creature swings its sceptre at Annika, groaning and hissing while doing so. The sceptre hits Annika on the shoulder with a strength that you wouldn't expect from a flimsy mummy.

Annika's rapier pierces the creature where its heart should be. It lets out a terrifying groan and black ooze drips out of the wound. If the creature was a regular, living human being it would have certainly be killed. Before it can recover Krenmuth hits its side with his warhammer.

The mummy turns to Melianne as she mocks the undead that wants to enslave the group.
Her insults seem to work well as the mummy holds its ears (?) and shakes its head.
Enough! the mummy yells YOU WILL PAY ME RESPECT!. It glares at Melianne and she can feel how its gaze tries to find a way into her mind.
Then it swings its sceptre at Annika again. The sceptre hits Annika hard and knocks her off her feet.

Both Annika's and Melianne's attacks miss the mummy entirely. Scags' and Krenmuth's claw-formation seems to produce some effect on the other hand as both of their attacks connect with the enemy

The mummy reacts to Krenmuth's invocation of Valkur Cry for help as much as you want. My power is stronger than anything you can muster it hisses and fixates Krenmuth with its glare.
Then it turns around and tries to hit Scags with its sceptre.

Just as the cleric falls Melianne and Annika finish off the mummy.
All of their attacks hit and the mummy collapses under the combined onslaught.
Black ooze flows out under the body of the corpse the undead being.

Astrid and Hjalmar both rush to Krenmuth. Hjalmar produces a flask from the inside of his coat and pours a liquid into Krenmuth's mouth.
Immediately he regains consciousness.
I always carry one of those around... just in case Hjalmar remarks and winks at Melianne.
As Krenmuth is able to stand up again you can investigate the pyramid if you'd like.
Astrid crosses her arms.
I don't like this. This... thing mentioned a palace and a high mage, We... will have to consider this during our excavations. I will report this to Korsak. It seems as if the ruin here is secured, is there anything you want to have a look at before we return?
OOC:
Great work everyone! You all level up the Level 3!
If you want to investigate the pyramid you can certainly do so. Otherwise I'll move us to the next chapter
Feb 26, 2022 5:32 am
Annika nods as Astrid lays out the situation, cleaning black ichor from her rapier. "Indeed - presumably we can expect this High Mage to be of similar kind and disposition to this creature. Anything you scholars can decipher to learn more about them would be helpful. I would also very much like to see if we can circumvent that barrier to examine the artefacts behind. I do not believe our business here is finished, by any stretch, but for now it seems we are secure. Well done, everyone."

"A man after my own heart!" Melianne beams at Hjalmar, letting her hand fall away from where she was reaching for her own first aid kit and kneeling near them, examining their cleric friend's injuries. "Krenmuth, how are you feeling? Perhaps we should take a small break before going back to the camp, to let your wounds properly close. Do you suppose you might have a concussion?"

She looks over at where Annika and Astrid are conversing and calls to them: "Do you think there is anything to this mummy's scepter? I propose we check if it's safe before letting the workers deal with it. Plenty a song about careless adventurers failing to identify a magical item, you know?"

I will send some workers to try to circumvent this barrier from the back Astrid assures Annika.

Melianne looks at the scepter. It's a polished piece of dark brown wood, topped with a green gem. You think that the gem is glowing a bit but this could be a mirage as well.
Krenmuth meanwhile is able to stand in his own again.
OOC:
If Melianne or anyone else wants to they can make an Arcana check in order to try to see if it is magical. Else you can only try to identify it by spending a short/long rest with it.

Wow, we don't have Arcana specialists at all. I think my +1 is the best for the current team... XD
Melianne twirls the scepter in her hands, examining the odd green gem with curiosity and feeling slightly repulsed by it at the same time. She has to admit that it is of good craftsmanship, but the circumstances make her suspect that it was used for plenty of nefarious deeds. Not the weapon's fault, she supposes, and the woodwork is lovely... Was it even intended to be used as a weapon, or did the mummy simply had nothing else?

Still surrounded by darkness, Krenmuth hears a voice say, "Not today." A gust of air behind him pushes him forward.

Krenmuth awakens to the dim lights of torches. He feels a dull pain throughout his body, except for where the warm liquid still soothes his throat. He squints his eyes to fight the brightness from his war hammer. "Thank you, Hjalmar," he says, then turns to the sound of Melianne's voice. "I can walk out of here. Is the mummy destroyed? Does anyone else need help?"

Krenmuth smiles at the news of their victory. As he gathers his wits, he observes as Annika, Astrid, and Melianne study the scepter and discuss the situation. "This place hides so much evil. I want to come back here when they work on the barrier. I don't trust what's in those crates."

Melianne can't really determine what the nature of the mummie's sceptre is. It clearly emanates a sinister aura but she can't really point a finger at its nature.
Nevertheless the ruin seems to be secured. Astrid rushes off to organize some workers and you leave the pyramid as well.
OOC:
Great work everyone! You cleared the ruins and are clearly on to the sinister presence in the ruins. Let's continue our adventure in the next thread
