The Chaos Mines

Zachary, still staring out the window, suddenly started backing away from it with a look of terror on his face. A moment later, all hell broke loose.

Raine was standing by the door looking out into the corridor when the window broke. He turned around in time to see Kieran and Tiny destroyed by the strange tentacles.

"Oh, crap! Run!", he exclaimed before taking his own advice and speeding off down the corridor to the west.

With his back pressed to the wall, a horrified Zachary watches as his friend is reduced to a dedicated husk and discarded. A strange sparking red object caught his attention as it fell from Kieran's corpse. Having never seen anything beyond these caves, over the years, Zachary had developed an extremely vivid imagination and an intense curiosity about anything new that he encountered. Kieran's and Tiny's deaths had satisfied his curiosity about the tentacled whatever-it-was, but the strange red object... What was that??

Zachary heard Raine shout as he lunged forward and grabbed the glittering red object. Then he pivoted and took off after the beekeeper with every bit of speed he could muster. He kept his eyes forward but could feel the monstrous tentacle stabbing at his exposed back.

Seeing Zachary grab one of the glittering, glowing red things, a greedy Ungor goes for the other, before joining in on the mass exodus out the door. Ilva is already making a run for it and so is Ostarghi, his new shield turned towards the "window" as if it's going to do him any good should the tentacles lash out.

Wil groans seeing the lightning fast annihilation of his tiny friend. The bit of hope he represented was now dead. Wil runs for the southern door with the rest and notices that some have grabbed makeshift shields and weapons. He feels grateful for another breath and vows to make it out of here… for Tiny Tim.
Slinky had heard the commotion and stepped through the southern door already. Not sure which direction to go, he sinks into a shadow and waits to see which way the rest turn. He aims to remain alive by following in darkness and letting the others expose the dangers.
He says to himself, "Fools" with a self-righteous shrug.

OOC:
This is the best post in the game.
Frito, Felf, and Will recoil in horror as they watch some of their fellow slaves killed in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, Frito was mid-chew when he inhales in surprise and he gets a few crumbs caught in his windpipe and begins coughing. Will clamps down on his tongue in fright and he feels a small trickle of blood in his mouth. Felf goes stock still in fright. After a few moments, all three make a break for the door to get out of reach of those horrible tentacles.

Orwalsh Stoneglow
A bit of food fell from Orwalsh's mouth as the tendril emerged from the mysterious wall attacking some of his fellow "labor force." Although shocked he manages to sort of roll and come to his feet as the tendrils take form. "You shouldn't waste good bread!" Orwalsh's shout to the tendril of bread and utensils is accompanied by a strike from his make-shift wood cudgel. He then makes a break towards the other door on the south side.

Slye Gigglewater
As the tendril struck out Syle barely managed to avoid being impaled like one of his situational compatriots. Taking his long-fashioned shiv he slashes at the tendril just as Kieran is dusted. "We need to get outta' her fast!" He then makes a break for the southern door.

Na'freya Shadowfeather
Her eyes grew wide, seemingly awestruck by what was happening before her, though she showed little emotion. Looking over to Slye she mutters, "Let's leave this!" She swings at the tendril closest to her and then she begins to quickly make her way to the southern door where there are a few others.

Raine makes the decision to break right down the western hallway and the others, either fleeing in panic or methodically waiting for another to make the call, follow suit...

The corridor leads on for a ways and the group of haggard escapees makes their way swiftly down it. A brief tremor momentarily halts their progress but the shaking is over almost as soon as it begins. At the end of the hall, the group in front stops suddenly as they realize that the room the corridor opens onto has fallen away in the explosion.

What was once a storeroom is now a deadly obstacle course consisting of a vast chasm passable only by three remaining outcroppings that were once the floor of this room. The outcroppings are separated by about 10 ft each with former elements of the store room still somewhat connecting them. A cargo net hangs between the entry ledge and the first outcropping, a length of pipe that once passed water deeper into the mines hangs dislodged from the ceiling between the 1st and 2nd outcroppings, and the chain winch that was used for hoisting heavy crates hangs from the ceiling between the second and third out croppings. There is nothing to assist with the leap from the third out cropping to the doorway on the other side.

Worse than this is the fact that two huge cats, once common house cats now made massive by the twisted energy of the chaos vortex, prowl the cavernous ledges above these outcroppings higher up than the prisoners can reach. They peer friskily down at you as you peer out across the chasm...

Wil, not expecting to live long enough to experience hunger again, takes out two of the tins of spiced ham and pries them open with a knife. Hoping that cats are more interested in a meal they don’t have to kill first, he tosses them up to the ledge where they perch.

Rolls

Tossing tins - (1d20+1)

(4) + 1 = 5

Nov 11, 2021 5:41 am
The cats seem immediately impressed by this offering and both move quickly to the ham. A standoff soon ensues with both cats arched on either side of the salty meat making deep throated "mraooooowws" at each other.

Slinky had followed the group at a safe distance but suddenly felt the need to take advantage of the distraction provided by Wil.
Running to build momentum, he leaps from the entry ledge onto the cargo net hoping to stay afoot and make it to the first outcropping.

Rolls

Leap - (1d20+1)

(17) + 1 = 18

Wil, seeing his ploy at work, begins to crawl slowly toward the cargo net when a little silhouette of a man (skaramooch skaramooch Wil he do the fandango?) leaping in front of him. Wil holds the net firm to aid the stranger’s landing. Then he gingerly begins his careful crawl across the net.
Nov 11, 2021 6:02 am
While Slinky is easily able to leap to the net and then swing across to the first outcropping (Reflex save DC10), Will is unable to reach the net by hand from his position on the entry ledge.

Andreas "The Son of A Shepherd"

"Hmm..." Andreas was perplexed, confounded even at the state of the cargo net. Scratching his skull in contemplation, the stress of the cats so near slowing him.

Cor the Gravedigger

Cor on the other hand sprung into action using his catchpole to hook onto the net and pull it up into Andreas' hands.

Kimberly Weaver

"Praise the Sun!" Kimberly declared and scrabbled up and across the net to the relative safety of the other side.

Cor the Gravedigger

Cor followed Kimberly across the net nimble as a cat.

Andreas "The Son of A Shepherd"

Andreas followed Cor reaching the other side, then directed Cor to extend the catchpole. Both leaned and anchored the net allowing the others easy purchase to the net.

"Slow and steady, teamwork makes the dream work."

Rolls

Cor Strength - (1d20+2)

(16) + 2 = 18

Nov 11, 2021 6:55 am
Undor and Ilva watch the others go first, secretly hoping they take the risks to clear the path for them. Also hoping the ham distraction lasts long enough for them to pass through later without the cats returning focus to fresher meals.

Ostarghi volunteers his makeshift shield to be used as a bridge if it's big enough to help with the final gap.
Nov 11, 2021 7:34 am
Grateful for the assistance from Andreas and Cor, Zachary and Raine wait until it is their turn, then climb to the first outcropping.

Felf Crestfall

"Quick thinking, everyone!" Felf can't help but feel much more optimistic at their odds of survival with such clever people in their group.

Will Wheatson

Will begins to worry about the first platform becoming overcrowded before those who crossed had made their way to the second platform. "Not too fast. We don't want to all crowd the same platform. I'll protect the rear with Frito." Will readies his weapon in case the cats finish their meal before everyone is out of danger.

Frito Bandito

"Like hell you will. I'm small and won't take up much room. I appreciate your offer though." Frito uses the net to make it to the second platform.

Felf Crestfall

"I'll stay with you Will. Anyone else?"

Frito Dexterity - (1d20+3)

(16) + 3 = 19

Kimberly Weaver

Kimberly shimmied across the pipe, using her lithe thighs and fingertips to the second platform. "Right not too many on the platform at once. Andreas base out for me and fling me to the ledge across. If anyone else has a rope I can tie it off and help you climb up the other side. Otherwise I can help Andreas across and we can form a human chain." Kimberly limbered up for a feat of acrobatics.

Andreas "The Son of A Shepherd"

Andreas followed Kimberly's lead and shimmied across the pipe taking a knee at the edge of the platform gauging the distance between the platform and chain. "You sure Kim?"

Kimberly Weaver

"Name a better acrobat you know. I've got this!" She jumped into his waiting palms and was launched to the chain. She anticipated the grab, levering herself leading with her forehead. Planning to vault from chain to the final platform.

Cor the Gravedigger

"We know time is of the essence but that net looks pretty weak. One at a time. Try to crawl through or over the pipe. We want to split the weight up on these ledges. Remember, fluid is fast."

Rolls

Kimberly Dexterity - (1d20+2)

(7) + 2 = 9

Andreas Strength - (1d20+3)

(19) + 3 = 22

Cor Personality maybe a pep talk will help? - (1d20)

(4) = 4

As Kimberly swings for the final platform on the winch, her sweaty palms slip on the slick metal of the chain and she begins to fall!

Slye, Orwalsh, and Na'freya were some of the last ones out of the chaotic dormitory of death! As they catch up to the remaining survivors they take in the situation and try to follow the others.
OOC:
They're first going to attempt to cross to the first, then onto the second ledge if things go well.
Slye Gigglewater
"C'mon. We've got to make it across." Slye leads the pack, low to the ground, and moving at a cautious pace across the netting to the first ledge, relying primarily on the strength in his legs and arms to pull himself across and keep from falling down and through to the depths below.

Orwalsh Stoneglow
Being underground was something Orwalsh was familiar with, but he was never much of a rock climber. Nervously, he follows Slye's lead to try and cross the chasm, relying on his strength more than anything to simply grasp and pull himself across as needed.

Na'freya Shadowfeather
She eyes the ethereal-like cats above, seemingly entertained by a piece of meat. She mutters, "Watch yourselves. . .those fur demons look feral, lovely, and hungry." She carefully makes her way towards the first ledge, getting down on all fours attempting to cross the net deftly, bringing up the rear.
