Chapter 2: The First Seal

After discovering the importance and potential value of the Seal of Astaroth, the adventurers sought out a more direct route to the Gateway. They knew there must be some way to access it through the city, as they saw a vertical shaft in the ceiling above the Gateway itself. Armed with Tilma's knowledge of the sewer systems and keen sense of direction, they group set early on a clear morning out to find whatever building in the Harborside district hid the entrance to that vertical shaft.

Harborside is a tangle of piers, floating docks, and anchorages. Seagulls wheel in the sky above, while stevedores' cries fill the salt-tanged air. Warehouses of every size and shape proliferate, as sailors, merchants, and peddlers crowd the bustling streets.

Harborside's most immediately striking feature is its machinery, with dozens of enormous cranes, countless powered scoops and cargo carts that dramatically accelerate the loading and unloading process. They are run by the Harborhands, one of the most powerful crews in the city thanks to the dockworkers' ability to shut off the city's economic lifeblood with a strike.

But it is deeper in the district, close to the city walls, where Tilma locates the spot that she thinks corresponds to the gate. There sits a ramshackle, two-story warehouse, sandwiched between tenement buildings.

From the front entrance on the bustling Castle Street, the second level is at street level. There is a door and several windows. Scouting out the back of the building, the first level is at street level, accessed by a less-crowded alley way. there is a small fenced-off yard, and large barn doors are the only access point. The tenements both overlook the top of the warehouse, so its roof is probably accessible from the inside of the tenements and maybe a bit of climbing.
Nov 28, 2021 7:31 am
Laurent was completely out of his element in the harborside district: it was too noisy, too agitated, the smells and sights a bit too overwhelming. But somehow, he felt more excitement in following Tilma and Berry around than discomfort at the neighbourhood. Seeking out a more direct passage to the Seal was a necessary first step. As their investigations led to the rather unassuming building, the young scholar began wondering what next.

"So, should we just knock?", he asked, in what must have felt to the others an impossibly naive tone.

OOC:
Just so I get this right, frontside entrance is at a higher level (2nd floor) whereas the more silent, backside alley arrives at the ground floor of the building. On the back there is a yard and a barn-style door, on the front entrance, an ordinary door and windows?

OOC:
Correct, matmaisan. Castle Street is on a higher elevation than the back alley.
Nov 28, 2021 8:29 am
"Good idea Laurent. Go knock. I'll go from the side." she points at the alleyway "Berry, wanna try going from above?"
Nov 28, 2021 9:51 am
Berry stretches as he considers the approach. Nodding he tries to find a way into one of the tenements and make his way towards the roof.
Nov 28, 2021 11:14 am
"Wait, wait, what should I ask? , he whispered loudly and urgently as he noticed his new companions striking out in different directions. He was woefully unprepared to handle the eventual social interaction on his own, and wondered what to do if no one answered to his knocking. With the seed of an idea in mind, he rummaged through his large belt satchel and brought up a sheet of parchment. Cursing silently, he began to sketch something rather quickly on the sheet. He looked up to the neighboring buildings and mentally measured the nearby edifices. After a few moments, he jotted down some script on the top of his parchment, a sly grin cracking his face at last. "I've got this..." he whispered, trying to encourage himself.
OOC:
Unless the others interject, he'll go up to the door and bang noisily on it.

Tilma quickly heads into the alley and heads towards the door. She stays hidden near enough Laurent to hear him knocking at which moment she would dash for the door and head inside.

BERRY: You make your way to the entrance of one of the adjacent tenements. No doorman watches the door, which doesn't even close properly as a result of the weathering of the doorframe. Above, a sign reads "Harborside Orphanage." The poorly lit interior is filled with the sounds of young children - mostly crying, some taunting, others playing.

You make your way up a thin, creaky stairway, where a pair of children rip past you, howling with laughter. At the top of the winding stairs, on the third floor wind blows from a wide-open window. Looking out the window, you see the warehouse roof below, including 2 skylights.
OOC:
I'll roll your acrobatics check to hop down onto the roof. The result is 24 - nice!
Berry slides down a drainpipe and lands as quietly as a mouse on the warehouse's roof.

LAURENT: Laurent pounds on the door. His observant eye notices the door gives way more than it should with each thudding impact, and a quick glance reveals the door has been forced open quite recently.

There is a long delay, but eventually you hear something rummaging around. There is a long pause, but finally the metal door on the eyelet slot clanks open and you see the eye of a human peering out. "We ain't open. Come back tomorrow."

TILMA: Tilma dashes up to the big barn doors at the back of the warehouse. You grab hold of the handle, crack open the big barn door, and slip into a dimly lit bay full of crates and barrels.
OOC:
Because of the dim light, you get advantage on your stealth check! I'll roll it for you.
Hiding behind a tall stack of crates, you look in and see what you can. Sitting among the crates is an tall, bearded half-elf male dressed in dashing clothes - a big hat, short cape wrapped around his shoulders, and tall boots. His feet are propped up on a barrel, and he is idly inspecting the contents of a nearby crate, and a rapier hangs from his hip.

"Ah! Good morning Good Sir! My name is Anton, Anton Haratovic of the EYE-BAB-WaR, the I.B.A.B.Wa.R!" he says with a wide smile full of forced enthusiasm. "As you certainly know, the Bureau is currently assessing its priorities for the Harborside district, and I am here, as its humble agent, for the scheduled inspection of your V.G.E.C.", he adds showing the piece of parchment he had been working on, in a rather shaky manner so as to avoid the man focusing on any detail.

"Wouldn't want any of those slimes coming up uninvited! Poor Rowan, just yesterday he had to clean-up a house up Ballast lane, whole family consumed... awful business, truly...", he added, shaking his head sadly, eyes cast to the floor. " May I come in?", he punctuated the question with yet another big forced smile. "I have here your compensatory indemnity, of course!", he added, tapping his belt pouch suggestively.

Trying to get them to allow Len to visit the premises, to ... you know, check if everything is up to code *wink, wink*. Offering a bribe discreetly as well. Hoping the verbiage and the obviously unthreatening appearance of the young man would make the ruse more believable. Don't know if you want any rolls to be made — forgery for the paper, deception for the rest. I don't mind you rolling, Len, if that would speed things up.

Berry sees that the sky lights have latched windows built into them. As you approach, you see that there is two men dressed in dark cloaks at the door. One is speaking with Laurent, the other stands behind him. Both have curved daggers drawn. Further down the corridor you see a body of a man lying in pool of blood. The skylights lead directly into that corridor, one above the men, the other above the dead body.

Rolling deception...
Despite your excellent acting, the man behind the door seems in a hurry to be done with you, although he does eye that purse for more than just a moment. "Hey piss off already! I don't care about ..."

Then you hear another voice, and he disappears to confer with someone behind him, and then returns to the hole in the door. "Oh yeah, slimes you said right? Absolutely a nightmare. Fucks up all the plumbing. You'd better come in right this minute."

You see a smile of black teeth flash behind the door before he slams the hole shut. Then, the door unlocks and swings open a little with a rickety creak. You definitely get the sense if you walk in that door the owner of that black smile intends to put a knife in your back.

Tilma stays low, taking a moment to take stock of the situation. She notices there are two more figures further in the warehouse, a man and a woman dressed in black cloaks. They seem to be searching for something, turning over crates and generally making a mess of the place.

You take stock of the half-elf. At first glance he seems bored, twirling an arrow in his fingers in a dazzling display of manual dexterity to pass the time. But, you notice his eyes seem fixed on the top floor, where a balcony overlooks the warehouse floor.

You hear some men inviting someone inside from the top floor, which you assume is Laurent. The half-elf gracefully leaps to his feet and pulls out his bow, quietly making his way toward the stairs. The two cloaked figures look up at the half-elf but he waves them away.

"Keep searching. I'll handle this." he replies.
Dec 2, 2021 7:54 am
Pulling his bow and placing it at his side, Berry attempts to get the window open above the men.
Dec 2, 2021 8:00 am
Tilma dashes outside of the building the same way she came in trying to be stealthy as possible while running which is not very much. But hopefully she will be out before anyone notices where the noise came from.
She dashes through the door, up and around the corner. She slows her step just a bit when arriving at where Laurance is. Catching her breath she puts her hands on his shoulders, "You idiot. This is the wrong house!" she says as she tries to push him away "I'm sorry for my Idiot brother. He often mistakes our house." she gives the man in the door her most innocent smile.

Tilma dashes out the door, and it bangs shut behind her - not on purpose, but speed was her priority. It can't be helped now, so she rounds the corner and finds Laurent. She delivers her line to the ajar door, but there is no visible or audible reaction from behind.

Meanwhile, Berry hears Tilma's ruse, and can see the two black-clad men looking at each other with confusion. While they are trying to figure out what to do, Berry goes ahead and opens the window, only to encounter a simple locking mechanism. Standard issue, nothing he hasn't tackled before.
OOC:
Rolling a DC 10 thieves' tools check for Berry... success!
Berry pops the window open easily and silently.

Then they hear from within the warehouse the echoes of the voice of the half-elf: "Hey! Knives out! Trouble's afoot!"

The front door slams shut and you hear them wrestling with a sticky deadbolt.
OOC:
Hello players! These black-cloaked folks are batting down the hatches. If you want to go in guns blazing (so to speak), your quick thinking leaves the front door crew (Laurent & Tilma) with a chance to push the door in and getting snapping. Berry has an easy way in and a clear shot at the these folks. However, if you'd rather try a different approach, feel free to put forward other ideas!

Painfully aware of the man's threatening — nay harmful! — intentions, Laurent swallowed hard. There were any number of protective runes he could call forth, but he was woefully unprepared in the field of forced persuasion. As he pondered his options for a few moments, beads of perspiration forming on his brow as he looked at the door standing slightly ajar. "Yes, well... coming as soon as I get my papers in order..." he answered in an equivocal tone.

That is when — surprising him as much as she must have surprised the two men behind the door —, Tilma burst out of the alley and began trying to push him away from the door, her strong hands tightening on the young man's shoulder. Shocked and confused, Laurent wasn't sure if he should attempt to pursue his ruse. At first he tried to follow up on his plan.

"Unhand me, woman! Are you mad? How can I be your kin, you are an elf! The labor of the Eye-bab Waaaah!", he cried out, as the elf warrior's iron grip tightened. "...it mustn't be tampered with," he added, in an incoherent groan.

As he exclaimed loudly, he looked at the elf with confusion plain in his expression. "What's happening?", he whispered, in a hissing voice, just as the front door banged shut, his eyes locked on Tilma's, "change of plans? I can still get them to open..."

Turning to the door, he added loudly again "Gentlemen! I don't want to have to come back here with the guard to enforce the Bureau's writ!". Following his veiled bureaucratic threat, he made a series of complex, swift hand motions and spoke words of power under his breath, as in a lengthy, forced exhale.
OOC:
Sorry for the long delay.

The above post makes some assumptions about timing, though I'm trying to incorporate the described actions of the thugs and Tilma. I had hoped to post before Tilma reached Laurent, then once again after she intervened, and then after the rogues decide to try and bolt the door. Synchronicity is one of those hard things to guarantee in a PbPost context...

Casting blade ward after the last call to the door, just in case.

As to future actions, I'm unsure as to what to do next, as expressed in the Discord channel. Realistically, either Tilma is going to kick the door in immediately, or we're going to figure out another way in, probably later.

"Calm down." Tilma says as she literally shuts his mouth with her hand. "There's at least 4 of them in there and the mean business. There was a corpse below. And one of them, probably the leader, looked quite strong. I personally don't want to risk my hide for something or someone I don't know. We can simply come back later, when they're gone. Or if you want to play good Samaritan we can call the guards. But that would complicate our investigation as well. What do you want to do?" she releases her hand from his mouth, slowly.
"I hope Berry is all right..." she mutters and looks at approximately where he should be. Wondering if she should go and warn him.
Dec 4, 2021 3:06 pm
Berry waits a few moments for Tilma to burst to door open and start taking names, but it doesn't happen. Slowly, quietly, he closes the skylight, leaving it unlocked. Perhaps we can come back later.
Dec 4, 2021 5:26 pm
Calming down and breaking free from Tilma’s grapple, the young scholar turned to face her. "A corpse?", he murmured, dumbfounded. He looked at the door, now hoping they would not come out to investigate. He looked quickly at the windows as well, trying to see if they were being observed by the occupants of the warehouse. He pulled out a short copper wire that he entwined around his right index finger, before pointing it to the roof while murmuring a few words. In the gnome’s ears, Laurent’s voice whispered softly. "Timbers, are you well? Folks inside mean business, see anything up there?"

Dec 5, 2021 12:40 am
The black-cloaks get those deadbolts locked tight.

Amid the arguing, Laurent gathers information about the situation with his keen senses. You can tell the men inside are retreating away from the door from their boots - these are hard soldier's boots, not the soft-soled boots of thieves. But, you also hear faint sounds right behind the door: a blade being drawn, then repeated whispers. You surmise that one man is staying behind to deter pursuit and buy the others time to escape, either out the back or through some other route. It's unlikely he can see you, but he can hear your conversation.

Berry remains unseen from the rooftop. He closes the window and watches as on of the men darts down the hall to the stairs and zips down, out of sight. The other stays by the door. With a blade drawn, he is counting on his fingers with his other hand, counting out loud the seconds as they pass. Probably meant to discourage pursuit or buy the others time while they retreat.
Dec 5, 2021 1:44 am
"There were couple behind the door," Berry whispers, "And a corpse. They didn't want you inside. We should come back."
Dec 6, 2021 1:59 pm
Breaking from Tilma's vigorous, protective embrace, the young man seemed to have taken back a measure of control. Eyeing her strong hands warily, he whispered to the elf "He sees them falling back, from up there. I wonder if they're taking the corpse with them, or just leaving it there. I also wonder if they're fleeing through the back alley, or... you know, down the VGEC. They could be coming around right now! They also sounded nothing like the ruffians from the stories I hear: hard boots made for marching, seemed coordinated, orderly. No drunken thugs, this lot. What should we do?"

Even before she can answer, he uses the same copper wire a second time, whispering a new message to their roof-wandering ally. "Wait a second, before we all fall back. Are they taking the body? Can you still see them?"
OOC:
I'm okay coming back later, but I wonder if they're taking the body, or leaving it there. Also, I'm a bit worried they might be flanking us right now.
Dec 6, 2021 4:01 pm
Berry continues to peer through the glass to see their movements.
Dec 6, 2021 5:39 pm
Berry sees the body has been left behind.

After counting to sixty, the man who stayed behind makes a run for it, following after the others. He gives the body and pool of blood a wide berth. You haven't seen any sign of the others. Berry visually sees this, while Laurent notes the heavy, receding footfalls through the door.
Dec 6, 2021 5:52 pm
Hearing the heavy footfalls, Laurent points again towards the position he imagines Berry is, and whispers again "Sounds like the one at the door has moved away. Can you see him?", and then, turning to Tilma, he added in a slightly louder voice, "I might have a way to open the door from outside..."
OOC:
Well, not sure this can work, but Laurent is thinking of casting Mage hand on the other side of the door, and then touch his way blindly until he can feel the deadbolts and try to open them. But I see there is some debate online as to whether the hand conveys any sensation to the caster, so it might be this is simply not possible. Of course, if he were on the roof and could see the door...
Dec 6, 2021 9:18 pm
"Let me see if I can make this work," the young magus said, dusting his robes before stepping cautiously towards the bolted door. As he took those soft, cautious steps, he intoned a strangely dissonant verse under his breath, the only recognisable part of it being a chanting reference to 'Niveral, lock-keeper of the Unknown'. After a few brief moments, he closed his eyes in concentration while gesturing swiftly with his right-hand and speaking words of power. He set that same right hand on the door delicately without pushing and began to breath in a measured pace, as perspiration began to form on his brow.

After a few moments, he exhaled deeply, frustration readily apparent. "I thought I could do this... I was wrong."
OOC:
Casting guidance on himself and then Mage hand. He will have it appear on the far side of the door and attempt to guide it towards the deadbolts.

Feel free to discuss in discord or here.
Dec 7, 2021 9:45 am
Disappointed but not entirely discouraged, Laurent pointed towards the roof, dispatching yet another message. "Can't get the door open from here. Should we try to enter now? Through the back alley? Roof?".

As he whispered these things, he looked at Tilma, the question obviously being directed at both partners in not-as-of-yet-crime.
Dec 7, 2021 8:34 pm
"How about we try to join up with Berry. Being unable to hear him is weird." and with that she heads off to where her gnome friend is.
Dec 7, 2021 8:49 pm
Tilma leads the way up to the roof by way of the orphanage. In a similar experience to Berry with children of various sizes jetting about and generally causing chaos. The level of supervision on these kids is terrible!

You drop down onto the roof, where you find Berry. He's seen no sign of anyone coming or going from either the back or the front. Its possible there is an underground exit tunnel, which when you think about it might be a desirable feature for a warehouse to load in or ship out clandestine goods.
Dec 8, 2021 10:35 am
Laurent had never scrambled on the rooftop of some warehouse; he would be far more thrilled if it weren't for the gnawing sensation that there was still much danger below.

"Should we try to enter the building immediately? Do you think they realized you were observing from here?, Laurent asked Berry, still in hushed tones. His gaze moved from one top the other of his new companions. "You're the adventurers. You know best..."
Dec 8, 2021 12:20 pm
"Adventurers?" questions Berry, as if hearing the word for the first then looking at Tilma with a smile, "We are adventurers, aren't we?"
Dec 8, 2021 2:45 pm
"That's one way you could call us, true. We are seeking trouble as adventurers do after all." she looks inside. "Though I'm not ready to risk my hide when it can be avoided either. I say we stay here for a moment, eat a lunch while keeping an eye on the interior. And then go inside if the big bads haven't come back."
Dec 8, 2021 8:39 pm
"I'm tempted to agree. I'm pretty sure they didn't see me and I got the skylight unlocked so we can drop in whenever it's all clear," Berry pulls out a piece of dried sausage, nibbling on it like a mouse with a piece of cheese.
Dec 9, 2021 12:43 pm
Not having packed a lunch, Laurent simply sat cross legged on the roof, next to his companions. He had been very eager to leave the cloister and join this fabulous adventure. And he had never been a big eater, as was obvious from his frame and the general lack of muscle mass.

Waiting seemed a reasonable course of action, though now that he was sitting on a warehouse roof in a densely populated neighborhood, he felt a bit exposed. From time to time, he would edge next to the skylight and look down, as discretely as possible, his curiosity greater than his hunger.
Dec 9, 2021 1:22 pm
Tilma takes out a sandwich. A simple one with two slices of brown bread, a salad leaf and a few pieces of tomato.
"So, Laurent? How did the two of you meet? Old friends? New friends? If I already asked, don't mind me. I tend to forget what I already asked or not. There are so many people, it's impossible to keep track on whom you say What. By the way Berry, when's your birthday? I and Norran had an idea for a gift for you. And no chance in hell I will tell you what it is so don't even bother asking."
Dec 9, 2021 1:38 pm
"Oh, I wish I could forget things!", Laurent responded. "It was during spring session three years past, Professor Undaleseen's third class on Ontological paracontraptions and cosmological structures, a [thurdsay]. Guess you were there in the previous classes, eh, Timbers? I was so focused on that course! The professor wasn't a good speaker, but a great mind, no doubt about it. What about you two?"

You wait for a reasonable period of time where you've heard and seen no sign of the the black cloaks and their dapper leader. Confident they have vacated the premises, you enter the warehouse through the skylight, dropping into the main hallway.

With the skylights as the only light sources and the sun still being fairly low in the sky, it is dim light within. In the hallway you see the dead body lying in a pool of coagulating blood. There are unlocked doors on north and south side of the hall. On west end of the hall is the locked front door, and east leads to the main warehouse. Bloody footprints lead from the pool of blood east.

Berry checks the body, looking at his clothes to try and identify who he might be, an employee? A fellow criminal or someone else?
Dec 10, 2021 2:19 am
The corpse is dressed in workman's clothes - a long sleeved, striped roll neck jumper, flat cap, long trousers with wide, flared bottoms, and leather gloves. His shoes look a little off though - instead of workman clogs, he's sporting soft leather boots, the kind a thief might wear to walk silently.

"The others had hard boots, like soldiers'," Laurent mused, as Berry revealed his findings. He considered the corpse from his vantage point: was the face visible? Were his wounds and cause of death obvious? Would it be possible to examine him more closely without stepping into the pool of coagulated blood? AS he pondered these matters, he reflexively intoned his dissonant psalm.

A cursory once-over of the warehouse reveals the following:
TOP FLOOR

Hallway: There's the corpse of warehouse worker with the thief boots, not to mention the skylight. More on that later.

North Room: Office There is a desk with drawers and bookshelf with many years worth of ledgers and other books that account for the comings and goings of goods and current inventories. The desk is littered with papers and writing implements. A small wood-burning stove is in the corner for warmth in the winter months.

South Room: Bunk Room: Bunks stacked 3 high, enough for 21 sleepers. Windows are barred, and the door locks from the outside, and feels like a prison - very sparse. You can hear noises from the orphanage on the other side of the paper-thin exterior wall.

Mezzanine: Surrounding the cargo bay on all sides is a railed balcony that overlooks the bay on the bottom floor. On the south side is a cargo lift for hefting cargo from one level to another, or loading cargo onto wagons. A large skylight illuminates the bay.

BOTTOM FLOOR

Cargo Bay: Many crates and barrels are stacked in haphazard piles, some of which are draped in white sheets. There are two dead bodies here, dragged into a corner. One is dressed like the worker on the top floor, including the unusual shoes. The other is dressed in a black cloak, like the men you chased away.

Supplies Room: A small supply room for warehouse workers. Has a small wood-burning stove, hooks with aprons and gloves, and a cabinet full of various warehouse tools such as crowbars.[/quote]

Laurent investigates the body as best he can without disturbing it. His face is visible, and it appears his throat was slit which accounts for the pool of blood. Getting a closer look, you see the corpse has the tattoo of a cockatrice on his wrist, the mark of House Bartoz.
Peindora says:

Tilma follows the trail of bloody footprints goes from the top floor (originating in the pool of blood in the hallway) into the cargo bay and straight for the supplies room. There, the foot prints completely vanish, as if they went through the door and vanished into thin air. There is a half footprint in the frame of the door that is cut clean in the middle, leaving only the heel. It is clear they went into this room. This smells a lot like sorcery, but the door itself and the frame is an extremely ordinary wooden door.
OOC:
The items highlighted in bold are a survey of interesting things you've discovered and can interact with, but have yet to be effectively examined. You're welcome to search for secret exits and entrances in any of the rooms. Following the elf to the supplies room on the lower floor, Laurent's mind rushed in multiple directions simultaneously. He was mostly curious about the office room, with the wealth of papers to examine. But that could wait, Tilma's words waking further suspicions in the excitable youth's mind.

Once at the threshold of the room he knelt to examine the strange, bisected footprint carefully, before considering the doorframe. He hummed his dissonant psalm once more as he examined the entrance to the room. "What an intriguing, discovery...", he murmured, mostly to himself.
OOC:
Regarding the supply room, Laurent would suppose some vertical portal could explain the missing front half of a footprint, but he wondered if it was the effect of a casting, or if the room had been prepared to teleport people in or out. As he examined those hypotheses, he also considered the spells he knew of that might have been used for such an escape.

After dealing with this particular clue, Laurent would like to examine the upstairs office, including the stove. Criminals might have wanted, and not entirely succeeded in destroying evidence. Berry investigates the barrels and crates, especially those hidden under sheets.
Berry peeks under the dusty drop cloths and finds all sorts of junk, including moth-eaten bolts of cloth, bottles of spoiled olive oil, and hundreds of pairs of wooden-soled sandals that were all the rage last summer but are now out of fashion. Your experience in the underworld tells you this is window dressing for a front, staged for appearances. This warehouse isn't for housing wares, at least not these ones.

Behind one of the stacks of barrels stacked against the solid rock, something catches your eye - a part of the wall flickered. You become certain it wasn't your imagination when you see it flicker again, although it is hard to make out what is happening behind all those barrels.

Laurent is confident the door and its frame are entirely mundane. However, some hold that there is mythic significance in even mundane doors. They likely used a spell or artifact to tap into that essence and temporarily make the door a magical gateway to somewhere else. That's fairly significant magic for a criminal to have, and certainly would be a handy thing.

I'll update Laurent's upstairs search tomorrow :)

"These are no ordinary ruffians, ", the young man stated as he stood up. "The sorcery evidenced by this mysterious disappearance is not likely available to ordinary cut-purses. I think we were lucky not to fight our way in," he added, reflexively dusting off his robes and hands. "Whoever did the killing here, they knew their business. Very dangerous," Tilma could see that Laurent’s pale visage was tuning porcelain-white as he silently considered what they nearly ran into. "Find anything out there, Timbers?"
Dec 19, 2021 1:18 pm
"I think there's some kind of illusion here. Come and take a look."
Dec 19, 2021 3:00 pm
"An illusion? Fascinating!", the excitable scholar exclaimed, moving eagerly towards his erstwhile school colleague. As he approached, however, his thoughts returned to the obvious danger presented by the black cloaks, and he spoke out in an urgent tone "A dweomer could also mean a trap! Perhaps refrain from touching or approaching before it can be confirmed the weave seeks to dissimulate, rather than harm! This might take a while, though. " And Laurent sat crossed legged in the cargo area, and began rummaging through his rucksack.

Tilma follows her associate and listens to their conversation about the illusion. After which she takes the first thing she finds and throws it through the illusion. If nothing happens she goes through.
Dec 20, 2021 9:18 am
Laurent prepares his ritual. Clearing away the barrels, you can see that periodically the stone wall changes into an open archway leading into a poorly lit room. You can just barely make out a trapdoor in the floor.

When Tilma throws an outdated wooden sandal from the crates at the solid wall, it holds. But as soon as she throws it through the archway, the archway stabilizes and remains.

It's almost as if the space couldn't decide what it was supposed to be, and the sandal provided irrefutable evidence it must be an archway and not a wall.

Once Laurent finishes his ritual, he discovers the space is woven with complex but frayed tapestry of transmutation and abjuration magic. Not even a hint of illusion magic is contained.

The spell also illuminates something magical on the black cloaked body in the cargo bay. It is also made of transmutation magic but much weaker.

"Fascinating!", Laurent whispered as, with his ritual completed, he observed the magical effluents oozing from the partially concealed passageway. "Not an illusion; it contains warding runes and a strong smell of transmutation," and turning to Tima he explains, "Magic that changes the state of things."

As he stood up and observed the lower ground with a faint radiance shimmering before his eyes, Laurent pointed to the dead, black-cloaked man. "Something smelling of sorcery on that one, as well. An item, most probably. I must check the office quickly, just to ake sure that there are no further, obvious auras around.
OOC:
Does the abjuration / transmutation magic cease to flicker after Tilma sent a sandal through the archway? Laurent would like to quickly wlak through the warehouse's upper and lower floor, just trying to notice if anything is revealed to his enhanced senses. Otherwise, Laurent will pick the item once he's done the scan of the different areas.

matmaisan says:

Yes, precisely. When it was a solid wall, it was like the magic didn't exist. But once the archway appeared, the magic was palpable.
matmaisan says:

After a careful once-over, you confirm that nothing else in the building (aside from you already found) stands out as magical.

Whoever searches the body finds on the black-cloaked corpse's body a hidden pocket which contains a intricate folded paper bird. When you hold the bird in your hand, it unfurls into a creaseless piece of parchment. Scrawled across the page is a message written in very messing handwriting:

Meet under the bridge on Beacon Lane on the 21st Day of Toil at the cursed sun's zenith. Significant progress expected as our patience grows thin.

-- The Tribunal

The paper then folds itself back into a bird. It stands there, staring at the person who picked it up.

Tilma has Darkvision so poorly lit shouldn't pose a problem.
Tilma goes through the archway and looks around to see what else is in the room and then lowers herself towards the trapdoor to examine if it looks like the one they saw underground. While doing so she talks, "I wonder what's in here... " she lists in voice all the things of importance that she sees around her and then when examining the trapdoor says, "You know, we might have missed this place if it wasn't for those guys. Do you think we that would have made such a thorough search if we weren't searching clues about them as well?"
Dec 21, 2021 8:04 am
Tilma notes that the trap door is circular, like the one in the caverns. It is also barred on this side, to keep things down below. There's a good chance it is the same door, but only one way to know for sure.

Laurent: The Tribunal is something of a legend that has popped up from time to time across your study of secrets and magic in Iskandar. They are a mysterious organization whose leaders and goals are completely obfuscated. They fade in and out of Iskandar's criminal underworld seemingly at random - an assassination here, a heist there. Rarely are they interested in wealth, sometimes stealing what seems like a worthless tome or minor relic. But this much is certain - whenever they fix a goal in their sights, they are completely dogged in its pursuit.

Some have speculated The Tribunal is insane. Others consider them criminal masterminds that play the game so well that nobody can guess their motives. Others speculate that they don't exist at all, and other factions use this name when they want to be disconnected from a crime.

The only pattern they have is that they tend to work with independent contractors, pay handsomely, and stay completely in the shadows.

First of all, my apologies for not posting sooner. Merry christmas and a happy new year to the five of you. The season is always a bit unpredictable, regarding personal time. I hope you are enjoying a bit of a break. And if you are not, I wish you all the best during this hectic period.
"I mean, I've come across the name a few times, in books and reports..." Laurent said, scratching his glossy black hair absentmindedly. "Some kind of criminal syndicate, but legendary. So legendary, in truth, that some learned folk believe they are but a name, used by different criminal gangs. That might be helped by the fact that the Tribunal operates through agents, hired hands, only the most skilled. They are very effective however, reputed to always get what they want. Thing is," he paused for dramatic effect, "what they want is as unpredictable as their methods seem unfailing: clearly not hoarders of wealth, or veiled manipulators of power. Their objectives are inscrutable, as are their identities. That the black-cloaked fellow was bearing this message is an important omen. The group we chased away must be one such band of agents, and the Tribunal's patience is running thin."

He paused for a few moments, as he pondered something silently. "Many paths open to us now. But before deciding what to do, we might be best served by trying to figure out what happened here, before our arrival. Let us assume the tribunal wanted to learn of this very access to the Seal. Let us imagine that the black cloaks came to this warehouse, guarded by a thug in the service of whoever operates this place. They dispatched the man upstairs. But how did the black-cloak die? At the hands of his companions? Something, or someone else? When I knocked at the door, they decided to leave, to come check this place later. That the watch isn't here already means they did not want the place found by the Iskandar authorities. If they're on a schedule — having to report tomorrow, it would seem —, they might be coming back at any moment. Or the owners of this place might send someone to check on the dead thug... in any case, we either go down the shaft now, or we leave, if we want to avoid a confrontation... "
OOC:
Famous last words (tm)...

I'm wondering two things: (1) who killed the black-cloaked man? I recall chek-cking out the upstair corpse, but not the downstairs one. I'm trying to figure if something went wrong among the black cloaks, or if it is more plausible to assume that the grey-cloak fought and killed the black cloak, perhaps throwing him over the ledge into the warehouse... (2) Does it look like the grey-cloak lived here? We looked at the quarters and suc. Any evidence someone cooked or slept here, or does it look this fellow wasn't here on a permanent basis?

"Too many questions." Tilma says while still looking down, "I'm not the brightest So I'll leave the detailed thinking to you. In the meanwhile I think I'll go check below. Need to secure our target in case there's more cloaks there or any new cockatrices. If I see anything I can't handle I'll shout. Works for you? Hope so, cause I'm off!" and with those words she disappears through the trap door.

There are stairs. I believe everyone's already on the warehouse floor, which is on the lower level. The supply room with the partial footprint at the threshold, the flickering archway hiding the shaft, the black-cloak's corpse in whose pocket you found the note from The Tribunal, all of these are on the lower level.

In the supply room is a grey cloak hanging from a peg, suggesting two of the dead worked here, while the third was one of the interlopers.
Dec 31, 2021 10:56 pm
Tilma descends down ancient ladder that is built into the vertical shaft. She drops down into the cavernous chamber below, which is exactly how she left it about a week ago except for a few changes:

* The smell of rat and other carrion eaters is in the air. The cockatrice corpses in the corner is swarming with flies, and the beady eyes of rats reflect the violet and green light of the crystals by the Seal of Astaroth.
* You've taken the eggs and sold to the Pickler's Guild.
* There are now only 8 statues, which implies that two of them unpetrified. Some time and effort may spent to track them, but the trail might be old.

The seal, including the two crystals, are exactly as you left them.

Quick jump back to describe Laurent's inspection the offices on the top floor!
matmaisan says:
After dealing with this particular clue, Laurent would like to examine the upstairs office, including the stove. Criminals might have wanted, and not entirely succeeded in destroying evidence.
Laurent makes a quick search of the office. Among the boring business minutiae and mundane miscellany, he finds some curious tidbits:

* A deed to the Harbourview Orphanage, next door. It is in the Bartoz family name.
* A glance through the ledgers show they are fairly well constructed but your trained eye sees inconsistencies, gaps that are not accounted for. Quite probably cooked books.
* The stove is stuffed full of a stack of broadsheets from yesterday. They are from the Iskandar Inquisitive, and the front-page story is an exposé on House Bartoz's role in a recent plague in the city.
* A locked drawer in the desk contains a silver mirror inscribed with the words "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.". It radiates magic, as per Laurent's detect magic ritual.
OOC:
And now back to the warehouse floor!
matmaisan says:
So, there are two grey cloak corpses in the warehourse? I thought we'd only found the one on the upper floor, but perhaps I am misremembering or misreading something. Is it obvious how the dead black cloak met his end? Does he have a dagger sticking out of his chest, and a missing handrail above suggesting that he struggled with an assailant, got stabbed and pushed over the railing, and met a grisly death on impact on the lower level? What can be ascertained about the third body, if one is to be found?
matmaisan says:

You are fairly certain that two of the bodies belong to men who served Bartoz (those in the workman's clothes but thieves' boots); the third draped in the black cloak matches the attire of the men you met just moments ago. The dead black cloak's head is smashed in, and a nearby crowbar is the likely murder weapon. There are signs of struggle, and you feel confident he died in a quarrel with Bartoz's men as the black cloaks stormed the building.

Also, it is unclear if anyone lived here on a permanent basis. There is that spartan room of bunks on the top floor (across from the office), but it seemed more like a prison than a lived-in sleeping quarters. There is a good chance that the warehouse is staffed with shift workers, but who the bunks were meant for isn't obvious.

Jan 2, 2022 7:34 pm
Laurent was glad he had taken the time to inspect the office. He considered taking the detached documents — deed and half burnt papers — but decided not to. He did take mental notes of the discrepancies in the books, and stored the information about the ownership of the orphanage, and the suspicions falling on the Bartoz family regarding the spreading of the plague in town. One couldn't trust broadsheets unquestioningly, but the article might be another thread on which to pull, when the time was appropriate. Laurent tried to identify the author of the article in the Inquisitive, for future reference. With Berry's light-fingered assistance, Laurent was uncovered the mirror radiating magic in the locked drawer. This was a further puzzle for another time. He was careful not to touch the item directly; he picked the unbloodied grey cloak and wrapped the mirror in it, both to store it safely, but also to avoid inadvertently activating the item's powers. Mirrors were renowned as scrying devices, the object of choice of Seers, evil witches, and spies. He would be careful not to operate it in circumstances that might lead to his identification. He tucked the bundle at the bottom of his backpack, and nodded to Berry: "Ready when you are, Timbers...". He somehow continued to emanate that odd mix of childish excitement and deep-seated dread at the prospect that his current actions might attract the attention, or the wrath, of powerful factions in Iskandar.

Laurent and Berry descend the ladder into the cavernous chamber below, tying a rope to ensure you can get back without difficulty.

https://i.imgur.com/EWBszdU.png

You find TIlma bullseyeing rats with her trusty crossbow, and the scene is otherwise as described above. The cavern is dominated by the glowing violet and green crystal orbs which flank an ancient gateway, upon which the Seal of Astaroth is engraved. Violent arcs of magical energy spark from the damaged green crystal.

Laurent's magical detection senses very strong abjuration magic, to the point where it is downright oppressive. It is likely that not even scrying spells can penetrate this place. However, each time the damaged crystal sparks you feel the magic temporarily weaken.
OOC:
Feel free to interact with anything in the cavern or backtrack and take a look at other areas. It's been a week since you were last here and nature abhors a vacuum. It is possible new residents have moved in, so you may wish to move cautiously.

Tilma recovers her bolts from the rat carcasses. "Took... You... Long... Enough..." she says a word between each bolt pulled out. She wipes them off against her pants and puts them back into the quiver. Making a mental note to properly clean them once she's got time. "So what do we do now? Go through that door? Or portal, or whatever it's called."
Jan 4, 2022 1:34 pm
Laurent stood there, observing the extraordinary artifact of ages gone, for a long minute. He barely registered Tilma's words, much less her actions, his eyes focusing intently on the Seal, and the arching displays of arcane energy.

After this moment of awed silence, he closed his eyes briefly, softly massaging his forehead. "Looking at this is giving me a migraine... what a... what an astounding thing you've found!", he licked his lips, which seemed parched after the climb and the discovery of this cavern.

Finally reacting to Tilma's words, the scrawny scholar turned to her and recounted what they had found above. "We found a magic mirror, and some more evidence that this warehouse belongs to the Bartoz, and that they have their fingers into all sorts of nasty business... including, it would seem, a Plague?"

Do you think we can actually open it?, he stated, observing the physical properties of the gate. He once again began mumbling his odd, atonal hymn under his breath.
OOC:
The gate is described as having a pentagram around which are scribbled things in an alien tongue. Laurent speaks abyssal, but not infernal. He could ritually cast comprehend languages, assuming Tilma and Berry agree to waiting for another ten minutes. Not sure it will work, the inscriptions could be coded, or arcane cypherings using the infernal dialect. But I get the sense that there is no handle, or other obvious opening device, correct? Also, your Chapter 1 post describes the arcs of arcane energy as 'intermittent'. Is there a rhythm, a frequency of sorts, or does it seem entirely irregular / unpredictable? I'm trying to figure out if we can move next to the Gate, or if the risk of getting zapped on the way is very high... Casting guidance, which will break concentration for detect magic.

Laurent studies the gate. His suspicion is correct - there is no mechanism for opening the door part of the gateway. It is made of stone and flush with the gate's fame as if carved from the same rock.

The arcs of magical energy coming from the damaged crystal are random. The energy seems drawn to the powerful magic of the artifact. You doubt anything in this cave comes close to it in terms of power and therefore you would be safe to approach, but you can't be certain.

As mentioned earlier, the shrouding magic dimmed whenever the green crystal spasmed arcs of energy.

Laurent continued to consider the patterns in the arcane energy flowing from the colored crystals. He continued the droning intonation of the psalm-like recitation from before.
OOC:
I'm trying to get the correct mental picture here. The green and purple lights each emanate from one of the pedestals on which stands a crystal of the respective color. between these two, is an arch on which we have The Seal of Astaroth written in infernal. Under the archway, and apparently made of the same stone is a square/rectangular/round (?) gate hewn of the same stone as the archway. On this gate is a five pointed star symbol.

Regarding the pedestals and crystals: are there arcs of arcane energy coming from both crystals? Do the crystals themselves seem damaged? Are both damaged? Are the arcs originating from the crystals and spreading outwards (away from the gate), or are the crystals attracting arcane energy, and if so, from where? Finally, are the arcs striking at random places around the closest pedestal, or are they hitting specific areas? Finally, do the arcs never/occasionnally/frequently/always hit the gate itself? Sending an arcana check, just to try to make sense of the magical engineering involved...

Berry stands at a safe distance as Laurent tried to make sense of the gate. He knew he'd brought the right man for the job. Looking around nervously, aware that stepping on Bartoz toes is not good for your health.
Jan 6, 2022 7:35 pm
Tilma sees her friend nervous. She puts her hand on his shoulder and rests her crossbow on her own. "Don't worry Goodberry." she smiles as she calmly says. "We took care of the cockatrices. I'm sure that we can handle what ever is thrown at us. Though I admit that we must be careful." She is cautiously looking around with the corners of her eyes. Staying alert.

Basically all correct, but there isn't a separate gate from the archway. Gateway/Archway/Arch/Gate are all just words describing the same stone structure. Imagine something like this, but a more ornate frame:

The pentagram and infernal markings are on the face of the stone within the arch.

The arcs are only coming from the green crystal, which has a large, obvious crack in it. The violet one glows steadily and seems undamaged. The arcs usually strike somewhere on or inside the gateway, but occasionally strike the surrounding rock.

Only so much can be learned in such a short period of study, but your arcana check points to some hypotheses about the gateway's architecture:

Jan 10, 2022 11:41 am
You train your weapons at the darkness, but nothing comes. It's deathly silent apart from the gateway. You feel something lurking, watching from the gloom to the northwest. Wait, did you only imagine an odd squelching? Hairs on your arm bristle, as when a thunderstorm is brewing.

What do you do?
Jan 11, 2022 10:50 pm
Breaking out of his protracted, ill-timed silence, the young scholar turned to his companions and finally spoke. "Coming where? What?" he asked, in a confused tone. Seeing the two more experienced adventurer's stance and focus on the northwest passage, he added, in a whisper, "Want me to illuminate that side of the cave? I'm not sure I have what it takes to handle this gate... not now, in any case.". He began quietly rummaging through his affairs, thinking of different incantations he could call upon to handle the present situation.
OOC:
Sorry for holding everybody up. Have had a very busy time. I'll fill the others in on his assessment of the gate once we are not handling a more immediate and physical threat. Laurent could cast light in the northwest corner, to scare or reveal whatever it is that is making these disgusting squelching sounds. If your express agreement on that, please assume I have cast the spell, Jabes and Len.

Scratching his head in confusion, Laurent turned to his new comrades. "Do you have a light source? I seem to have forgotten to bring one. But I can have it carried ahead of us," and as to demonstrate his sentence, his quarterstaff began floating five, ten feet away from him.
OOC:
I can use mage hand to transport a lantern or torch a bit further away. Sorry for the confusion regarding my own spell list. *facepalm*
Jan 13, 2022 5:37 am
OOC:
Assuming Berry or Tilma offer up their hooded lantern:
Berry strikes a flame with his tinderbox and sets it in his lantern while Tilma stands guard, bow at the ready. Laurent floats the flickering light forward into the dark toward the northwest passage. In the distance, you see tentacles on the far side of the tunnel seemingly floating into the shadows. The tentacles are arranged like that squid, at least ten feet in length but barbed and floating in the air. You do not see whatever body they are attached to, and the creature seems to retreat from the light, for now at least.
OOC:
Anything else you'd like to do here? You've accomplished your goal to confirm this warehouse is the topside access point to the Seal of Astaroth. If you'd like to study it further, you're welcome to, but doing so tempts the fates and may require you to tangle with those tentacles. You're welcome to leave at any time as well, and think about your next move.
Jan 13, 2022 8:20 am
"So what do we do now? Do we deal with the thing? Laurent are you done with studying the gate? Do we go through it? Do we go through it? Or do we need more time to study it? If we need to study it more, do we kill the thing so that it doesn't bother us? Or do we leave it here to guard the gate from others? We Could try to tame it a little to attack others but not us. Try might be the right word. I'm still not hundred percent sure how I will tame my cockatrice..."
She still points the crossbow towards where the creature is and stays sharp while waiting for others to give their ideas or plan of action.

"I’m not sure we can open it," Laurent answered, still concentrating on illuminating the tentacled thing the light had revealed. "Tge green stone, the broken one, shrouds the gate with a protective veil, probably how it has stayed undetected so long. Something broke it, so the veil is slightly lifted every time the green energy flares in those arcs. The purple stone is functional, and could contain another kind of magic: perhaps transmutative, if it is what changes the stone into something that allows passage, as the odd disappearing wall above."

As a tentacle squirmed in the nearby tunnel, his eyes shot back to the northwest, and beads of sweat began to pearl on his brow.

"We could attempt to touch the portal, try to manipulate it. But not with a flesh eating aberrationlurking in the shadows."
Jan 16, 2022 3:24 am
Berry takes one of his bolts and absently scratches behind his ear.

"How dangerous would it be to take that gem out?"
Jan 16, 2022 4:02 am
Tilma is fairly certain the creature is a Grell.

As for the ramifications of taking the stones or tampering with the portal, nobody in the group has any sure answers as to what may happen.
Jan 17, 2022 6:36 am
"That tentacle..." tilma thinks to herself. That tentacle looked familiar. "That's right! It's a Grell! They are like big floating brain with a bird-beak with a bunch of tentacles. Be careful of those tentacles as they might seem thin but they are actually pretty strong and those sharp barb like things at the tip of each tentacle can paralyze you. Also don't think that because the thing has no eyes that we have an advantage, naah it's more the other way around. The thing has an excellent hearing and some other sense that allows it to find us. What plays in our advatage however is that mostly these things are alone. We are actually lucky that it was so direct on approaching us. Usually they tend to ambush, hovering silently near the ceiling of a passage and when you pass below, it descends quickly and wraps its tentacles around its you." Tilma shivers as she remembers "I fell prey to one of them long ago. Was lucky that an adventurer found me in its lair."
Jan 17, 2022 8:18 am
"Think we can handle it?" Laurent asked, his lack of experience clearly showing. "I say we either pick it out now, or then move somewhere else. We have to decide if we take the stones, or one stone at least." He looked at Tilma, and then Berry, wondering what they were thinking.
Jan 19, 2022 6:53 am
"Yes, I think we can handle it. Just have to keep distance from those tentacles."

Berry reaches down to the green crystal and lifts it from the ground. It is heavy, maybe 30 to 40 lbs. As he lifts it, the arcing magical energy redirect from the gate and into his body!
OOC:
I'll roll a DC 13 con saving throw for Berry, with advantage on account of his natural Gnomish magic resistance. If he fails, he will take 3d6 lightning damage and drops the crystal (30% chance of breaking), if he succeeds, he takes 1/2 damage but manages to hold onto it.

Result: Berry takes 9 lightning damage and the crystal tumbles out of his grasp, but it does not break (just barely)
The crystal tumbles out of Berry's grasp after it zaps him and it clinks onto the smooth stone ground. Somehow, it doesn't break, but the arcs of electric energy are lashing out randomly now instead of into the gate.

Berry certainly feels something is different, like he's under the effect of a spell or enchantment.

Shortly after Berry removes the crystal, you feel a strong tremor rumble through the ground. A nearby stone statue topples over, and smashes into a hundred pieces.

Jan 21, 2022 2:35 am
Berry looks up and down at the seal. At first nothing changes, but the a faint orange light begins to glow from the seal. All of a sudden, the five-pointed star ignites into smoldering flame. The pyrotechnics are accompanied by another tremor, this one even bigger. You find yourselves struggling to stay upright as two more statues topple over and stalagmite falls from the ceiling a stone's throw away from you.

As the tremor subsides, a muffled voice emerges from Laurent's pack. "What the bloody hell is going on, Grimm?!" It calls out. "Answer me now, dammit!"
Jan 21, 2022 2:46 pm
With a panicked look around, Laurent tries to understand what just happened. Soon his eyes are fixed on the stone sending arching bolts of energy all around. He concentrated on the hand holding the lantern: seeing as it was more necessary nearby, the young scholar had his hand gently put down the lantern 15 feet from the northwestern exit, hopefully illuminating any incursion from that direction. Convinced that it was certainly the mirror speaking through layers of cloth, he once again improvised. muttering softly under his breath as he built the courage to act, he suddenly produced a vocal explosion, as he tried to produce a full-throated, hoarse groan, yelling out in a simulacrum of pain and confusion "Argh! NO!! Arh... the fuck if I know! M'leeeegs!! arh, grr..."

With all the shaking and noise, the grell decides now is the time to take it's chances. It comes full speed out from the dark passage like a bat out of hell, but as silent as grave. Thankfully, Tilma's been watchful eye spots it, preventing it from getting the drop on them entirely!

Seeing the horrendous creature in all its disgusting reality had Laurent's stomach turn, all blood having already drained from his face a few moments earlier, with the earthquake. Unsure of what to do, he thought presently of his own survival. Meanwhile, he concentrated all his will on moving the green stone with his mind.

Seeing the aberration give up persuaded Laurent to hit back. Eschewing his defensive veil, the young scholar pointed a finger at the receding form, and intoned a swift sequence of meaningless syllables. Tilma's bolt drives home right in the brain and penetrates clear through to the other side. The creature spasms uncontrollably, tentacles flailing and twitching. It crashes into a wall and goes still.

All is silent for a moment, and then another, stronger tremor reverberates through the cavern. This one lasts longer, and you see a forked crack form in the ground, spreading out from the gate and heading away from it. These cracks are mirror in the ceiling as well. As the crack spreads, it is accompanied by loud pops and cracks, filling the air with dust.
OOC:
You have dealt a killing blow to the Grell! Congrats! The situation in the gate is changing rapidly. What do you want to do next?
Jan 31, 2022 8:21 am
Pale and shaking, the young man leaned on his staff and caught his breath, only to be shaken by a further tremor.

"Good. Job... with... that... Thing," he spread his legs wider as he tried to keep his balance. He looked at the fissures appearing on the ground and the ceiling, and at the gate, trying to assess whether it was nw opening. He eyed the green crystal on the floor, wondering if it risked rolling into the growing crevice.

"What do we do?" he asked rather obviously, while concentrating on his mage hand to try to roll the crystal further to the northwest. He then took a few steps towards the purple stone, which had stayed remarkably unperturbed by the shaking ground.
Jan 31, 2022 3:21 pm
Tilma slams down her elbow in a gesture of victory. And then the quake starts. Trying to keep her balance and evade the fissures she dashes forward towards the creature, determined to get a trophy to show back at guild.

When Laurent asks what to do she simply shouts back "Don't know! You, figure it out. Throw the crystal at the gate if nothing else."

As she reaches Grell she tries to determine in as short time as possible what part of his she could easily salvage for a trophy.

"Right. Let me do that. Must take care of something first, though" and saying this, Laurent approached his old comrade, and knelt by him. Humming a strange tone under his breath, he touched Timber's wounded hands softly. An invisible warmth washed over the gnome, followed shortly by a relieving itching sensation under the skin, as blistered skin, concussed muscle and aching bones all mended delicately through divine intervention.

Once that was taken care of, Laurent moved towards the purple stone, and —though visibly flinching —, attempted to lift it out of its place on the pedestal.

LAURENT
As Laurent lifts the purple crystal from the podium, he immediately feels its warmth, which begins to seep into his arms. Looking down, he sees a purple field speckled with starlight with infusing him and spreading through his whole body. It doesn't stop there - the purple field fills the whole cavern, then fades, leaving only the stars.

Then Niveral, the God of Secrets appears before Laurent. His aura is palpable.
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/97/c4/e0/97c4e0bac31317b093501678e2aad98d.jpg

He speaks to you in Celestial, and his voice is slow and whispery. It is like an echo but in reverse, coming from all directions.

"My disciple, you are unravelling a very old and very dangerous string. But make no mistake, pull on it long enough and it will reveal the oldest secret, the first secret, from which all secrets are descended."

BERRY AND TILMA
The two of you watch as Laurent hoists the purple crystal. He straightens and holds it, is still for a moment, and then collapses in a heap. His eyelids are closed but his eyes are darting about rapidly. His hands are clenched tightly around the purple crystal, unable or unwilling to let go.

You observe that the glowing seal is rapidly fading from the closed gateway. As it dies out, there are suddenly extreme tremors that rock the whole city. The forked cracks begin to grow and rock and dust rains down on you.

The God of Secrets hears your words and responds with its echoes out of time:

"The price you pay for a secret will always be commensurate with its magnitude. And the greater the magnitude, the less control you have over who will pay the price. Laurent does not stir, even though you slap him hard enough to leave a red handprint on his cheek. And, his grip on the crystal is supernaturally strong, or perhaps his skin has become glued to its surface.

Laurent's eyes open. He sees he is lying on the ground, the purple crystal still in his hands. He feels like he has a death grip on the crystal, but his muscles loosen and he is able to pry his hands from it. Sitting up, you see the Gateway is no more.

All around the cavern is collapsing. Another stalactite falls, destroying the last of the stone statues.

You hastily make your way up the rope and back to the surface. There, you see the quake is not confined to the underground; the whole city is shaking. You are now back in the warehouse, you see that you are no longer alone. Peeking out from the small side room that contained the trap door to the now-destroyed Seal of Astaroth, you see that six men dressed as stevedores have flung open the back door of the warehouse. They are charging in, armed with a variety of weapons. You strongly suspect these are Lord Bartoz's men, and although they are heading your way you don't think they have seen you in the shadows yet.

Still shaking from his unexpected comatose episode, Laurent kept quiet and moved as swiftly as possible up the shaft, only to be confronted by this new difficulty. He had not spoken of his vision, and was not sure he ought to.

Laying low as the more experienced adventurers assessed the situation, Laurent quietly invoked his minor telekinetic operator, attempting to conclude the casting as silently and as out of sight as possible. Once the duo had decided their course of action, they were shockingly swift in execution, leaving Laurent to his own designs.

After but a brief moment of hesitation, the young scholar attempted to produce a distraction by making random objects fall at the opposite side of the warehouse, in relation to the staircase that was his companions' preferred escape route.
OOC:
I have a number of questions :
- do we still have the purple stone? If it was possible to carry it away, despite its size/weight, Laurent would definitely have tried to.
- the men charging in the warehouse, are they sporting grey cloaks? Since they are coming from the back door entrance they are at the same level as we are, correct? (EDIT sorry hadn't checked those handy maps out yet)
- I suppose there is a wealth of loose objects weighing less than 5lb in the warehouse (and within 30ft of Laurent) that could be made to fall and cause noise / create a distraction by the use of mage hand? I'm thinking of ways to grant Laurent and the others advantage on their stealth rolls... Tilma and Berry might not need it, but Laurent probably does. I'll roll with advantage, and Len and Jabes can determine if I must stick to the first roll, or if I can pick the better of the two, depending on whether the distraction is possible, whether it is effective, etc. (EDIT Looking at the map, I think his best hope would be to make objects fall in the vicinity of squares I-J/13-14, allowing the party to use the crates for cover, and hopefully attracting the attention of the incoming force to their comrades' cadavers)

When Laurent causes the crates to thud in the corner it draws the thugs in that direction, leading them to the corpses, which makes them even more agitated. But now their guard is really up. You'll have to take extra care if you want to get out of here unnoticed.

Satisfied that the trio had stayed undetected this far, Laurent continued to crouch behind whatever cover he could find, while trying to make his way towards the front door, which he assumed would be the fastest way out. He did so without coordinating or speaking, concerned as he was that the mere whisper might attract undue attention.
Feb 9, 2022 9:56 am
Once more, Laurent hears the muffled voice coming from inside his pack.

"I don't know who you are but you are dead. You picked the wrong person to rob, you little shit! My men should be there shortly... you are about to wish you hadn't crawled out of your hole today!"

As you turn towards the entrance hall there's a heavy knocking at the front door! "Open up! Grimm! Bartoz said to check on you. You clowns sleeping on the job or what?"

What do you do?
Feb 11, 2022 3:40 pm
The banging on the front door continues. From the direction of the detention room you hear muffled children's laughter. You know that room shares a wall with the orphanage next door. Wow, those walls are thin! Heavy footfalls tell you the thugs downstairs are heading up the stairs and will be on you in mere moments!

What do you do?!
Feb 11, 2022 6:50 pm
In a near panic, Laurent grabbed Timbers by his shoulders, and prepared to hoist the gnome over his head, so that he could reach the skylight and hopefully make it out. As he did so, he whispered curtly "Up and out," and signaled for Tilma to follow. If she was willing, he would help her up as well, hoping that the duo could then help him up. If things went badly, he could still invoke Niveral's protective shroud, thugs being a notoriously unruly and undisciplined bunch.
OOC:
I'm proposing this course of action assuming that it is not physically impossible to reach the skylight, or infeasible to do so before the downstairs thugs reach this general area; If it is obvious that this route wouldn't work, then we'd have to figure something else out. If the stated plan works, Laurent's next step would be to remotely open the deadbolt (with line of sight, the mage hand should be able to do the trick this time around), hoping to have the two bands of thugs run into each other and, in the ensuing confusion, buy the trio some time to run away as fast as their feet can take them.

Helping the lithe form of Tilma up through the skylight, Laurent was relieved to find Berry's rope being lowered down. His two associates would certainly be able to help him up. He tried to rush up the rope, hoping that his feet wouldn't be dangling down when the band of thugs reached this area. As soon as he made it through the skylight, he would lay down flatly on the roof, and concentrate on opening the deadbolt from above. He tried to do so discretely, and to roll out of view as soon as the task was completed, or proved too difficult to accomplish.

"Shut up! Dubro, check the office. Arman, open the damn door and let that whoreson Laslo in!"

You hear the door being unlatched and swung open.

Seeing that their daring escape was going better than expected, Laurent searched the facial expressions of his comrades in flight He saw what seemed like a silent agreement for getting as far as possible from these ruffians as swiftly as possible. The cloistered young scholar signalled for Berry to lead the way: the gnome was certainly the most sure-footed and street savvy of the bunch. He did gesture towards the back end of the edifice, with a questioning look. Should they move through the orphanage, or try to leave through the back alleyway?

The party makes their way from the rooftop back into the Harborside Orphanage without being detected. The earthquake has resulted in serious chaos within - the sound of children crying and adults yelling comes from every direction as you climb into the window and make your way down the stairwell. Fortunately the chaos provides excellent cover.

You find the chaos extends to the streets as well. As you exit the orphanage you see that the fissure continues through the orphanage and out into the street in more or less a straight line. It cleaves through a building on the other side of the street, which looks like it is about to collapse. A team of Harborside guards is pulling people out of the building while a wizard in white robes is reinforcing the building with a Wand of Web. Another building at the end of the street is catching fire, and a half giant is trying to down the flames by hurling rain barrels into it.

The street is full.of people as if every building in the district just divulged itself of all its occupants. They are speaking to each other, asking for information. There is a lot of fear and so many questions: are demons invading again? are wizards to blame? (they always are eventually) where is my daughter? are you hurt? have you seen ... ? and so on.

At least you'll be able to move anonymously in this chaos, barring magical means of detection.

Feb 24, 2022 10:16 am
"This is bad...", Laurent mumbled under his breath, as he walked along his companions, an air of guilt and concern clearly stamped on his face. "Has the whole town been hit?" he wondered out loud, his mind naturally going to his scholarly brothers, most of them quite aged, and the massive piles of wood, parchment and leather that must have been thrown about in a chaotic wave as the earth trembled. "We have to get somewhere safe, decide what to do. Gotta get rid of the mirror... a half decent diviner might be able to find us. And yet I think we might need to send a message to Bartoz before he finds us." As soon as he said that, he cringed, thinking that one of Bartoz seers or diviners might be listening to him as he spoke. He looked around in fear, sweat once again beginning to pearl on his pale skin.
OOC:

Lauren's watchful eye does not see anyone following them. It is easy to get lost in the bewildered, anxious crowd.

As far as lead boxes, a couple of options come to mind. Last week the party rescued a dwarf purveyor of weapons named Ulfgar Durthane, owner of Durthane's Cutlery. Although he's a weaponsmith he might have connections with metalworkers. Above all he is friendly to you, owes you a debt of gratitude, and hates Bartoz.

Another option might be to enquire at Lauren's temple. Those who delve for secrets need to keep them under wraps.
Feb 28, 2022 2:44 pm
"You told me about this Ulfgar fellow, the one you guys rescued... maybe he could help us handling this thing," he gestured meaningfully towards his backpack. Laurent had been very careful to not use his companion's name. And despite all the suffering around them, he seemed particularly concerned with the more targeted kind of suffering that crime syndicates had a reputation for delving in. He considered bringing the item to Niveral's Temple, but was somewhat afraid of what his superiors might think or say, and also of what Bartoz might do to them because of the young scholar's extracurricular activities.

Durthane's Cutlery The journey through the city is slow. The streets are filled with bewildered and scared people. Dogs and other pets are howling and running rampant, adding to the chaos. A strong sulphurous odour chokes the air you breath.

As you move through the city, you get a better sense of the damage. Certain regions are relatively unscathed, but others are cleaved through by arrow-straight fault lines that have split buildings in twain. But, people are organizing and banding together. You witness guards working together with a Priestess of Herkan, Goddess of Stones, to dig out a family buried under the rubble, the Priestess calling to the spirits within the stone to levitate an entire stone wall. In another quarter, a trio of Elves are singing a spell to awaken trees to assist in the rescue excavations of damaged buildings. Everywhere you go, people are banding together.

Soldiers and guards are on high alert, and patrols are forming. You do see that the towering walls that surround the city are unharmed, and soldiers line the walls, bracing for some sudden demon invasion that so far hasn't come.

You make your way out of the Harbourside district, wind your way through the twisted and beautiful streets of Templegate, and find yourself in the Southward district, where the majority of the trades conduct themselves. The Southward smells a little better than usual; the tanneries and blacksmiths have shut down for the day and aren't belching clouds of smoke and steam into the air, and the sulphur smell is starting to clear.

When you enter Durthane's Cutlery, you find the store completely intact, but in quite an uncharacteristically disheveled state. Ulfgar and his three daughters are busy trying to remount all the weapons that were proudly hung from the walls, and the free-standing suits of armour that have found themselves toppled over. Ulfgar is busy taking notes of all the damages and inventory losses when he notices Tilma and Berry arrive with Laurent.

"Well look who's here, girls!" He says to his daughters as he puts down his pen and book and comes over to give you a hearty handshake. He exchanges greetings with Laurent.

Upon hearing of your need for a lead box, Ulfgar thinks for a minute. "I haven't a lead box on hand, but I know plenty of lead workers. Real nice metal, lead is. You can use it for anything that doesn't need to be armour or weapons grade, and it's cheap. Roof tiles, plumbing pipes, coffins, trebuchet counterweights - you name it! All made out of lead. And with that superstition about wizards and demons not being able to see through lead, I've heard that the rich line their walls with the stuff! All of that is to say, Iskandar lead foundries are busy every hour of the day and night to keep up with demand."

Ulfgar picks up his pen and paper and begins sketching plans for a box. "Is a lead-lined box okay? It might take a few days for them to cast a whole box, but we could buy sheets right now. How big ya need it?" I'll send my eldest daughter over to the nearest foundry and pick up a few sheets, and craft the box out of wood."

"And of course, having saved my life, I won't even charge you labour on the job! Just the cost of materials for my favourite customers. Probably around 15 guilders. Should only take a couple of hours. Sound good?"

Tilma falls down on a bench next to the window and looks outside. Her jovial carefree expression is now gone. Witnessing all the destruction around the town has brought her down and made her think. Was it really worth it? She see a couple of people hurrying in the street with ladders in their hands. Probably heading towards the more damaged districts. She isn't some goody two shoes and knows that sometimes others get hurt when you try to do something that benefits you. But having a few people loose their jobs or spend a week sick isn't the same as almost destroying half of a city. All those people who lost their belongings, homes, jobs, or even their lives, or the lives of their loved ones... She looks back at her companions, wondering what they are thinking. This will need a real rethinking on her side. Whether she wants to continue forward with this adventure or not.
On one side she feels bad for all the people of the city. Really bad. On the other side the adventure has been great so far. The dangers, the findings, the thrill. For once she felt alive. She likes her job, but it isn't her life's goal to spend it in the sewers.
She returns her gaze to the exterior and continues to look outside.

"Coincidences?" Tilma looks at berry, and pulls away her hand. She sounds agitated, "Do you really think that this is a coincidence? We meddle with some strange magical stuff underground and at the same time an earthquake starts! I personally don't think that it is a coincidence at all! We did it! WE Caused All This!" she ends up with raised voice, standing, gesticulating towards outside the window. Her eyes angry, the frustration swelling inside.

Berry looks at Tilma, unused to such a burst of anger, before turning and walking out of the shop.

Tilma regrets her outburst a little, but this is all too emotionally taxing for her at the moment. She falls back on the bench and continues to stare at the window with an empty gaze.

"Excellent, excellent!!" Laurent stated as Ulfgar described his solution to the lead box conundrum. The fact that they would be able to enclose the item in a few hours, rather than days, was greatly reassuring to the young man.

He had noticed Tilma's gloomy mood, but had chosen not to intervene. He shared some of the elf's mood himself, though his unexpected encounter with his patron deity had set the apocalyptic happenings in the streets in their proper context. He continued to discuss details with Ulfgar as Tilma looked outside. His heart was raised when Berry sought to console his comrade, sooth her feelings; after all, the two had been companions longer, it was only natural that the gnome help out his buddy.

The feeling disappeared as swiftly when Tilma had her outburst. He gazed at her in silent horror as she, once more, revealed extremely sensitive information in a nearly public setting. His eyes darted to examine Ulfgar's expression, wondering if the dwarf understood what had just been revealed. Not sure what to add, he stated sheepishly, in a low tone "Rough day down the sewers...".

When Timbers stepped out of the shop, Laurent was divided between sticking indoors and trying to paper things over with Ulfgar, try to reassure Tilma, or rush out and help his erstwhile school buddy. His hesitation, as usual, led him to do none of the three. He continued to attempt idle talk with the dwarf about box designs. He knew his companion's nerevs were frayed, as were his. Time could heal some of that. Applying cold logic, or theologic reassurances, at this stage would not lead to faster healing.

After a few moments, and seeing that Timbers hadn't yet come back, Laurent sat next to Tilma. In a soft whisper, he tried to assuage her concerns "He couldn't have known. None of us could. Sometimes, a small incident has uncontrollable, unforeseeable consequences. Particularly when magic is at stake." He gave the words some time to sink in, before resuming, in a whisper. "When I took the purple stone, my God came to me. This need not be a consolation, but unravelling this secret seems of utter importance. Perhaps, the harm done today will serve to avert greater harm in the future?"
OOC:
JWho else was in Ulfgar's shop when Tilma stated that we caused the earthquake? Ulfgar's daughter? Other clients?

If Ufgar seems to have understood what Tilma stated, Laurent might try to reason things out with him.

OOC:
Just Ulfgar and two of his daughters (the third went to deal with the lead workers). There are no patrons other than yourselves currently.

Ulfgar would have been within earshot when she made her outburst. He seems busy with his designs. According to an insight check (result 22) you get the feeling that he heard Tilma but is either not sure what to make of your comments or doesn't care.

BERRY
Quote:
Berry walks the streets, watching the devastation, helping in what small ways he can, trying to wrap his head around Tilma's suggestion that they.... he, caused this.
Berry leaves the shop, looking to provide assistance. He finds that the destruction is isolated along certain fault lines that are straight as an arrow flies, carving through particular buildings and streets. Although there is a lot of building damage, there are few complete collapses and he encounters only minor injuries and no deaths. However, you start to see examples of looting - wretches occasionally dart out of the damaged buildings with their hands full of whatever belongings they could grab on short notice.

Once satisfied that Ulfgar would probably not connect the recent tragedy with Tilma's outburst, Laurent resumed his attempt at consoling the elven adventurer.

"Look, once Master Ulfgar has finished his box, we'll shut out one source of problems. Then we can think, with clearer heads, about what can be done next," he said, stopping at this juncture to make sure no one was eavesdropping. "This is far bigger than I expected when Timbers came knocking on my door," he added, with a sheepish, rather forced smile. "It is best that reasonable people, with the interest of the people at heart, discover and handle these Seals. We must just be very careful about handling this ancient magic..."

He hoped his talking might elicit a response in the brash and wilful elf. He began also wondering what Berry was up to: perhaps it was time to regroup, and walk away from the guilt-induced gloom together.

"Aaah!" Tilma messes her braids a little and let's out a short frustration runt before looking at Laurent. "I know that you're right. But right now I'm just frustrated and lost. Can't I sulk a little in my misery? I'm just an elf after all. I'll be fine later. Just let me digest all of it for now. Some of us need more time than others to circumstances. And don't worry, I'll apologize to Berry later. You are the smart one so I'll let you handle the thinking for now. Ok?" she gives him a weird smile.

After about an hour of wandering round the district and not able to do much to help, Berry returns to Durthane's. Poking his head round the door, sheepishly, "Everyone ok?"
Mar 26, 2022 11:03 am
Tilma looks at Berry, gets up, walks to him and hugs him. After a second, while still holding the little gnome in her arms she says, "Sorry, Berry..." in a calm and sorry voice. She tightens her hug and even raises him a little from the ground.

"Errm, yes, ok Til, it's ok." he struggles uncomfortably as he's lifted from the ground, his feet kicking at the air.

Not long after, Ulfgar completes work on the lead-lined box. He presents to you a plain but finely-crafted wooden box. It fits the items perfectly, and the box closes and latches tightly shut.

You now possess a crystal of unknown power, but if the earthquake it released is any indication it is artifact of immeasurable power, as well as value. In addition, you found a magic scrying mirror. Both were stolen from Lord Bartoz, one of the most powerful crime lords in all of Iskandar.

In addition, you have begun to understand the secret of the Seal of Astaroth, though perhaps you now have more questions than answers. The gateway did not lead to the undercity; instead it lead to destruction. But, when the rubble is cleared, what new answers will be found?

And, you are not alone in the quest for the Seals. Both Bartoz and a mysterious group known as the Tribunal searched for it. A lead is open to you - you have a note that tells you the time and location of a meeting that the Tribunal's men, led by the half-elf that mysteriously disappeared in the warehouse, are having. But, after this disaster, is better to leave it alone? Or do you press forward?
