Welcome Myrddin

Welcome Myrddin.

I see you are new to this site. What at you hoping to get from this game?

Do you have any past experience: with this game system, PbtA (Powered by the Apocalypse) games in general, other RPG systems, or with PbP (Play by Post)? It is fine of you don't, we can teach you as we go along.

Take a look at the Help! thread for guidance. Feel free to ask any question here or in the General Chat depending on where they seem relevant.

Welcome back Myrddin.

You seem to have vanished and reappeared (or reapplied). Let us know if you are having any problems.

Hi! Sorry I don't know what happened. I did see the game in my profile but then disappeared the next day... I have no experience at all in bot PbtA and PbP. I've played betrayal legacy before, and have had one session of DnD (Phandelver). I'm trying my hand at creating a character but is there an equilibrium I need to take note of when creating one specially in terms of classes?

Weird. Anyway, welcome twice. :)

Not a problem.
These rules, of course, don't provide as much as DnD's do, but that is by design, more freedom means more responsibility, though, so ask lots of questions, we will get you through.

No, not really, we try a bit to avoid having multiple of the 'same character', but there will always be some overlap, especially when the dice force us in the direction of a particular type.

The few bits of mechanical scaffold are not as important as the character and personality you make from them, they provide constraints and suggestions but do no limit you. We can try to make a character you are interested in playing.

Okay nice! First step should be to create my own character right? The character create screen is a bit confusing... Is it possible to create an elemental gunslinger or an elemental swordsman? (I took a look at the rules and it seems you need to summon an elemental or a creature to perform magic but not sure if there are any work around to that)

Magic is frowned upon in this world, so the 'elemental' part may not be a good fit. It is a bit flashy and likely to be noticed in a low-magic, low-key game like this.

Guns are relatively simple, single-shot devices. Think crossbow with more 'bang' and drama, and harder to make/source ammo for. So a 'gunslinger' would be more like a 'musketeer', but remember that you are a Fresh Faced adventurer, with no experience of this sort of thing. You may have a little training in guns by the army or the guards, or have worked for a smith to learn to use them?

Character generation is also a bit random. Maybe you want to roll your Attributes before you get too far along with thinking about these things? While we can make most concepts work with any stats, there may be a better fit.

Not to dissuade you from anything you already have in mind, but imho it wouldn't hurt to have some more fighting skills in the group if you're looking for ideas :)

Though, we only really need fighters if we want to get into more fights. If we don't have fighters, we avoid or elide fights.

Adding more fighters means more on-screen fights, which makes us all wish we were fighters, and so on. :)

I mean I agree in the abstract, but we did get ambushed by bandits who were happy to kill us.

Though to be fair I did kind of start that by shooting one of them, which does reinforce your point I guess :)

And coped well with the level of fighteryness you had. :) The actual fighting was less of a focus than it might have had to be if we had dedicated fighters. We did not even bother with enemy armor or hit point levels.

It could be argued that they started it by ambushing you. :)

Hmm. Wait I'm a bit confused - which character creation sheet should I use? the one here in the site or this http://www.onesevendesign.com/dw/world_of_dungeons_1979_bw.pdf? I'm inclined to believe that I would need to use the second one, in which case, are there other classes available aside from the example (fighter, thief, ranger, wizard)?

Sheet-wise you would need to make one here, using the site's 'Custom' sheet, and just typing (or copy/paste) in the relevant bits. We can't process the official PDF. You can take a look at the PDF from the site, but all the information needed has been transposed to the Rules page, here, for ease of use and reference.

Specifically take a look at the Character Creation rules post for this bit.

We are treating the 'classes' on the PDF as 'examples', you can make any combination of any two Skills and any two Special Abilities you like. If they seem not to make sense together that can be fun (or a mistake, which we can chat about:), and 'playing against type' --maybe by picking a character that does not make optimal use of their rolled Attributes-- can be fun too.

Take a look at the Character and World Creation thread to see how others have done it, but don't be daunted by all the chatter there, do your own thing.

And don't stop asking questions. :)

Also, don't worry about 'getting it wrong', we can change things later if we find they don't work the way you expected (and you can always kill your character (or put them on the shelf) and make a new one:).
