The fog that came up saved your hull, of that you can be sure. The Flying Cragworm severely outclassed your smaller freighter, and attacked with the ferocity of its desert born name sake. You're not sure what luck shined down on you, but the Flying Cragworm does not follow you. The crew follows they're captain's orders and rigged for silent running, slips into the shoals and around the island nearby. By the time you're in the open sea, it is dark and you sail under a sky full of dazzling stars.
Your captain, Lauchmair, slumps to the deck. Graciously wounded in battle with the pirate ship, he heroically guided the ship to safety, caring for his crew before his own needs. The first mate, Jolly Camber, was knocked into the sea, blood foaming from his rent belly.
The survivors gather together in the middeck. Lauchmair is laid out, dead from blood loss, and wrapped his proud long navy duster with white epaulets, his officer coast from the war. Well, some call it a war, even a civil war, but the Empire calls it only an insurrection. The winners write the histories, after all.
Dante stands too one side, twirling his fishknife in his fingers. The quartermaster has been speaking quietly with the crew for the past fifteen minutes. Whispers one on one. Purposefully not looking at anyone. Not yet. He's going to make his bid for captain soon. But not yet, not until he's sure he has the votes.
Introduce your characters, with descriptions. Add what Captain Lauchmair meant to you. He's an open book so help me write his eulogy to start us off. Also, how do you deal with this play for power by Dante?

[ +- ] Cragworm
"A cragworm is a spined serpent that can grow up to 50 feet (15 m) long. Its mouth opens horizontally and has many rows of teeth. Dwelling in abandoned or isolated areas, it preys on whatever it can find. The creature has many red, glistening eyes and is known for its terrible, mournful howl."
