Day - Something Strange Is Going On [IC]

Cryptid Con '21 was still going to happen despite the threat of the SARS-COV-2 virus.

Wagner Bradley, like many others attending the convention, knew the whole COVID thing was blown way out of proportion and was likely a cash-grab by the HCIC (the health-care-industrial complex). They didn't want the con to happen, because they didn't want anyone talking about the Truth: that secret experiments by the HCIC are responsible for at least 50% of all cryptids.

Javier Ramirez, on the other hand, is happy to finally be getting out again. The con is just an excuse to meet new people. Well that, and network with a few of the other "Whities" (people dedicated to uncovering the truth behind cryptids of the northern snows like himself).

Sammy Balentine was going, "just because". Being that the convention was in town, it was pretty convenient. He didn't expect much but Wagner had told him he would be going and that there was someone he wanted Sammy to meet. A fellow cryptid hunter who went by the handle RendezvousWithRami. Apparently "Rami" wasn't convinced Wagner and Sammy were the real deal, and he wanted Sammy to tell this new guy his story in person. Turns out this new guy lived in the city too, so why not?

Wagner had arranged a little get-together at a coffee shop in the evening of the last day of the con.

Wagner looked less out conspicuous than usual at Cryptid Con. His old, almost threadbare grey suit failed to give him the dignity he wished, but he looked no worse than half of the other weirdos. Still, the Con was a splendid source to see what lies were gaining tractions in the public, and what fragments of truths could be still salvaged.

He hung out in a corner of the coffee shop, two tables down from the agreed meeting spot, fully intentioned to check out RendezvousWithRami and murderofghouls before approaching them. Perhaps one of them had been compromised and wearing a wire? This would be a great occasion for them to get Wagner on tape… and they were not below blackmailing his fellow redditors.

Sipping a coffee in the corner, he glanced at the agreed-upon table, ready to scan whoever sat down first.
Feb 1, 2022 12:01 pm
Javi enters the cafe, glad to get out of the busy convention. His leg hurts after so much moving around the conference centre, and his head is spinning for the many notions learned in the various seminars, talks and events. He is glad for the respite this cafe meeting will grant, and curious about the encounter.

He spots the convened table, a little disappointed at seeing it empty. Oh well, he'll have to be first in. Maybe the paranoid types will appreciate an opening move from me, he thinks, limping to the table and sitting down.

He looks around. He has sent his photograph to the fellow cryptid buffs, as he doesn't have anything in particular to hide. He'll only share his nickname Javi with them, though - normal 'meeting strangers' precaution. Guess I'll just sit here with my leg stretched and pose as the friendly geek...

He orders some black coffee with plenty of sugar to the passing waiter. Then he puts his hands in sight on the table, and waits.

Sammy walks into the coffee shop and makes a bee-line for the counter. "Large, triple-shot almond milk vanilla latte extra hot, no foam - one shot of caramel, an extra shot of vanilla, with caramel drizzle on the bottom of the cup. Oh, and double cup it." He looks around the coffee shop, casing the location. He notes the door to the back room - most likely at least one exit that way. There's always the drive-thru window if things get tough. He hears the cash register ring and unconsciously checks the till - the bills are light.

It's going to be a bit of a wait for the coffee, so Sammy has a look around at the patrons. There's an old homeless guy off to the side trying to hide his interest. He isn't sure what to make of the guy. Is he undercover? Probably just crazy. Sammy decides to keep him in his field of vision and scans the rest of the store. There's not many here for coffee this late in the day.

He checks the agreed upon table. It's not a great spot for a get-away, but he figures the seat on the left is the best option - good view of the place and quick getaway over the counter and into the back. He notes that Rami is already sitting there. No sign of OutThere43. Maybe he chickened out at the last minute.

"Large, triple-shot ..." Sammy grabs the coffee before the barista can finish and heads to the table. He hears the sarcastic 'Your welcome, asshole.' the barista whispers, but ignores it. "So, you Rami?" Sammy calls out as he moves towards the table.
Feb 1, 2022 6:16 pm
He half-stands to offer his hand, then remembers the pandemic and sits down again.

He smiles at the newcomer. "That's me indeed. And, are you... OutThere or murderofghouls?" He hears his own voice, and realizes it is the first time ever he says those two nicks out loud. They sound strange, outside the setting of the forum.

"Take a seat."

The coffee shop is empty except for the three patrons and the barista. It is probably why Wagner picked it. He was definitely the paranoid type. All his posts tended to drift into rambling at the end, but both Javi and Sammy knew that underneath all that was a keen, insightful mind at work you just had to wade through all the rest. The barista was a thin older woman with her brown hair up in a bun. She had the worn leathery skin of those who have spent too long in the sun, like many in the city. She barely paid the three any attention. She delivers Sammy's coffee and asks Javi a perfunctory "What can I get you hun?"

As the three sit wary of each other, a group of sirens can be heard coming down the street. A few moments later as the sound rises and falls, three police cars pass by the coffee shop, their lights momentarily bathing the coffee shop in red and blue light.
"Must be a sale on donuts" the barista quips under her breath, and looks back at Javi.

Wagner casually walks to the wastebin to throw in a kleenex, and as he passes by the table with his two acquaintances he presses a button on weird plastic device in his pocket.
The Hidden Wire Detector bought on eBay last month fails to reveal any circuitry on either of them, so he decides to sit down coming back from the bin.

He tall figure creeps up to the table, beginning to talk with little regard for any conversation already going on "Hey. You guys Rami and ghouls, that's true? I'm OutThere. How do you do?"

He looks at the barista, "black coffee for me, and plenty of sugar, please. It's to keep my shape nice and round, you see... " he jokes.

As the woman leaves them, he follows with interest the manoeuvre of the newcomer, then smiles at him. "Hey. Nice to put a face to a... Nickname. Javi. I'm the rendezvous guy. "

"Jeez, you're tall..." he adds, looking up at Wagner. "Sit down, you'll give me a stiff neck."
Feb 3, 2022 3:39 am
"Oh, man! I thought you were an undercover cop. Don't scare a guy like that! Why the hell were you sitting over there by yourself?" Sammy eases a bit and leans back in his chair. He was so close to jumping the counter and bolting. He takes a small sip of his coffee - hot and sweet, just like he likes it.

"Well, it's good to finally meet you. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself in to. Hopefully, you're not as crazy as the nutjobs at the con this afternoon. Man, there were some real weirdos out today. I can't believe that's the crowd I run with now." He shakes his head and looks out into the empty coffee shop. "A year ago, you wouldn't have caught me dead at a thing like that. But, after what I saw ..." Sammy grows silent and stares off into space; his eye twitching ever-so-slightly.

"Holy Shit! Did you see that?" Sammy jumps from his seat and rushes to the window. He peers through the glass and down the street, trying to get a view of the figure that passed. "Dammit! Where the hell did it go?" He runs across the coffee shop and out the front door into the street. He doesn't stray far, but peers into the mouth of the alley trying to see where it went. After a few seconds, he walks back into the café and crosses to the table at the back. "Didn't either of you see that? It looked exactly like the thing that killed my partner."

Wagner looks a bit uncomfortable by the torrent of words ghouls is vomiting on him. He usually is the logorrheic one at any given table, but this guy…
"Cops are here, who knows if they’re legit or on someone’s tab…" he is cut short by the man leaving abruptly. While ghouls is gone, he whispers to Rami "You know, that guys knows a lot, that’s true. Hard to pin down, that’s a good sign, you know they can’t get him so easily."
Once the man comes back, Wagner looks at him with an unsettling, asymmetrical gaze "What, you think there’s something here? In this place?" he shakes his head "Sounds fishy to me. Could be a plant, something fake the government or whatnot puts out as bait for the hunters. So they can keep tab on us. Better be careful." he instinctively lowers his head into his shoulders, trying to look less conspicuous.

Startled by Sammy's sudden action, Javi shakes his head. "What thing?? You sure it wasn't some cosplayer guy in costume?" he asks looking around at the other patrons to see if anyone spotted anything, "I mean, it's a cryptid Con, and there are plenty of weirdos attending..." he adds, immediately regretting it, hoping the man doesn't interpret this comment as directed to him.

He stands up helping himself with the crutch.

"Alright, pals. Whatever is in that alley, it's best to find out with some light..." he says.

He takes his smartphone from a pocket and switches the flashlight function on. It's not a powerful beam, but better than nothing.
Feb 4, 2022 5:27 pm
Wagner grins at Rami’s phone "You, know, they can track you through that. I can hook you up with a clean one. Besides, we don’t really need it…" he opens his jacket and takes out a long and heavy watchman’s flashlight, the kind that can break a hand in addition to making light. Under the same armpit, you can see he also has a holster.

"Heh" he looks proud of his preparedness "now we can see much better." he points the beam at the darkness in the alley. "Be ready! If we make a discovery, we need to be able to defend it against those that wish to silence us!"

Wagner snaps on the flashlight and sweeps the beam across the alley. The wall of the restaurant on the left is adobe stonework, a large trash bin with the lid closed sits outside the backdoor to the restaurant next door. The cement wall on the right sports graffiti proclaiming "VIVA LA RAZA!". A common sight around town. It means "Long live the race!" a rallying cry of Chicanos everywhere.

As you make your way down the alley, the beam from the flashlight comes to rest on the back wall of the alley and you can make out what appears to be a huge wolf-snouted creature with a maw full of sharp teeth lurking in the shadows. Its eyes are two balls of fire and its teeth drip with blood.

Rami tries to assess the threat level of the creature he saw and the "battleground" of the alley. There is only one way in and one way out. Only two real options.. flee or fight, but fleeing looks destined to fail with his bum leg.
OOC:

Rami, with your Read a Bad Situation you can ask one question about this situation:

What’s my best way in?
What’s my best way out?
Are there any dangers we haven’t noticed?
What’s the biggest threat?
What’s most vulnerable to me?
What’s the best way to protect the victims?

Some of these may not apply particularly well to the current situation and thus would not provide very useful information.

"It… is… just a mural, guys. Just a mural and a trick of light." he sighs once he is sure "It is… it must have been those chemicals they punt in the tap water. They obfuscate our senses… make us more susceptible to illusions and manipulations and hoaxes. That’s why we fell for it. No other reason."

He takes a couple of steps towards the alley again "Come… come on, nothing to fear I guess… but for out own brains being rotted by the deep state." he frowns in revulsion.

The "VIVA" is in a bold brightly colored graffiti style, while the wolf mural is more detailed red and black piece of art. Javi cranes his neck to try and look past the crowd to catch more details. He looks at the body on the gurney, trying to spot if there are traces of blood, or other tell-tale clues as to the cause of death.

He also tries to engage in conversation with the gossiping crowd. "Any idea who found that poor guy?"

LOL. It was so detailed in my head, I thought for sure I had described it, or that you knew what I was thinking. :)
The police scene is a cordoned-off office building, tall by Albuquerque standards where there are height restrictions for construction. Although the police tape extends into the street, the main activity seems to be inside the building. There is no sign of violence or other disturbance outside, so whatever happened must have occurred inside the building. Although there is a rescue unit on the scene, there are no large fire trucks that might be expected for a fire. The paramedics wheeled a victim out of the building.

Feb 14, 2022 7:58 am
Javi asks around the crowd of bystanders if they know what the building is, what offices it houses, etc.
Feb 14, 2022 2:59 pm
Sammy leans in and tells both Javi and Wagner "I'm going to circle around and see if I can't get a better view. I've got to see what happened or it's going to drive me nuts." He points down the street to the west. "If we lose track of each other, we can meet up at the Bourbon and Boots a few blocks down."
Feb 14, 2022 10:32 pm
"Wait murderofghouls, we'll come with you," he says. He's too rattled, he might get in trouble, he thinks as he starts following Sammy.
"Come on OutThere, let's stick together, the man might need us." he turns to whisper at Wagner.
Feb 15, 2022 5:51 am
Sammy waits for Javi and Wagner to catch up, then turns and pushes his way through the crowd. He moves slowly around the outer rim of the crowd making his way to the doors of the building. He stops every so often to allow the others to catch up. It looks like Javi is struggling to get through the crowd on his bum leg and Wagner looks like he's about to have a heart attack. Why does he keep stopping and pulling at his jacket like that? Sammy shakes his head in frustration, but eventually gets to the door and cranes his neck to look inside the building.

The three amigos break off from the main crowd and make their way around the corner to check out the side of the building. The 15-story tall Bank of the West Tower looms large at the corner of Central and San Pedro avenues. The normally busy streets are mostly quiet at this time of night. The front of the building is surrounded by a 4 foot high iron fence, which is helping to keep the crowd at bay, but the parking lot in the rear can be accessed, although there is a police car parked there. As they move around the building they look up and see a broken window on the 11th floor. It looks like a few people are milling around in the office up there. Probably more police.

Sammy looks at the crowd in the front of the building and then back at the lone cop car in the parking lot. He scans the building and then turns back to Javi. "No. You're right. I'm curious, but I'm not crazy." He looks over at Wagner. "Trying to get in with this circus is a mistake. Let's go grab that beer." He looks at Javi and a smile stretches across his face. He tries his best to comb the crazy out of his hair and adopt the demeanor of an old, innocuous, almost senile man. "Oh my, such a turmoil!" he gets closer once again to the cops, looking worried "First the convention of crazy youngsters, and now this! I say officer, this city is becoming trouble!" he tries his best to look scared "Is… is there anything we good citizens need to do? Roads to avoid? Sammy pulls out his phone and pretends to search for some important information. He waits for the cop to step away, then looks up at Javi. "Yeah, you're probably right. I don't think we're going to find out any information here ... at least not now. Maybe we should just get a drink." Sammy looks over to Wagner. "Hey, OutThere! Let's go grab a drink and chat. You strike me as a Burbon-man." Sammy looks back at Javi. "I'm guessing red wine? The good stuff, not the house wine. I could use a Bud myself."

Sammy chuckles as he moves away from the crowd. Maybe I can get your actual names. This whole 'OutThere' and 'MurderofGhouls' is kinda strange, even for me. We sound like some kinda crazy cult. Call me Sammy."

Wagner stops on his tracks How does he know bourbon is my favorite drink? Is he actually spying on me? Probably not... still, better safe than sorry - he thinks to himself paranoid as always - Keep them off balance. Always. Can't be too careful.

"What? Bourbon? No, not at all, I do not enjoy bourbon. I would have one Corona beer instead, I quite share the taste of the younger generations." he does not look forward to it, but still... better a crappy drink than confirming personal information.

"And my name is..." he stops, truly terrified. - Do I say it? Naaah... - "... Carson!" he lands on his middle name as an acceptable compromise between politeness and deniability. "Pleasure to meet you!"

Wagner, Javi and Sammy make their way down the street to the nearest bar and grab a table in the corner where they are less likely to be overheard. It takes a while, but the waitress, an overworked young brunette, probably just out of college, comes to take their orders. He focuses on the news, also reading the captions.
Feb 23, 2022 11:46 pm
Sammy switches between the TV and his phone. He tries to capture as much information as he can from the broadcast while searching for details on various websites. He's looking for any information that will add color to the news report. He's also trying to find any details on the artwork they found or the phrase "Viva la Raza".

"The Policeman said this wasn’t the first… they had more as of recent" he pokes Sammy on the forearm "he said they have no leads because no one speaks to them. Guess the people of this city are smarter than I thought… whoever speaks up is guaranteed to be arrested and detained in an confidential location, that’s true, I tell you."

"This is up to us! The police are around only to make sure nobody sees what actually happened. This is some lab experiment that escaped, I’m sure of it." he scratches his beard, not even touching his Corona "See if there’s been other unexplainable attacks in the last few days around here. Time of day, locations. Who were the victims."

"I bet they were trying to make super-soldier. Or a telepath to spy on citizen. Or a mind-controlling substance that goes into vaccines."

".. sources inside the police force say they are baffled by the attack tonight at the Bank of the West Tower. The victim, whose name has not been released was apparently working after hours on the 11th floor of the building when they were brutally attacked and killed. There is currently no information on cause of death, but we know that the body was discovered earlier this evening by a member of the janitorial staff during their regular nightly cleaning. Sammy browses for information on his phone about the graffiti and the murder. He quickly finds that "Viva La Raza" is a very common slogan for Hispanic pride and can be found plastered over walls everywhere in the city. He dismisses it as unimportant and focuses on the information about the crime. He finds a number of photos and videos of the crime scene and finds various pictures of the building, taking note of the broken window on the 11th floor. Sammy notices that none of the pictures show there is any debris on the ground below the window. Its not possible to be sure from the photos but Sammy strongly suspects the window was broken from the outside.
OOC:
You get to ask two questions. You can pick from the following or think up a similar one of your own.

• What was it going to do?
• What is being concealed here?

"So, it looks like the 'Viva La Raza' is just regular graffiti. It's probably a dead end. What happened in that building, though ... that looks like something." He turns his phone to the others at the table and zooms in on the ground below the 11th floor. "Have a look at that. There is no glass on the floor below the window." He pulls the phone back and brings up another picture, zooming into the shot again and turning towards the two men. It's grainy, but it shows what's left of the window on the building. "That looks like a window that was blown in, not blown out. What the hell can do that 11 floors up?"
OOC:
My recommendation is that we ask "What do we think we are dealing with here?" and "What do we know about that creature?"

Sammy considers the evidence that he has so far. Trying to assemble the bits and pieces into a coherent theory. If it was a creature, and there was no reason to believe it wasn't, it might be able to fly. But if it could fly, then why not fly to the roof instead of breaking a window? And why was there a scrape on the wall in the alley? Not flying he thought, but something that could scale sheer walls.. and probably quickly. What he had seen had moved fast, and anything climbing up 11 stories might easily be seen if it lingered for any period of time or was very large. Plus, the glass used in high rises was pretty strong. You didn't just punch your way through that like some dumb movie. No. This was something that could climb fast and was very strong for its size. Maybe something like the Congolese J'ba FoFi spider, but that was only said to reside in central Africa. No one had ever heard of one in North America let alone in a city. They were jungle creatures. Could there be a similar spider creature residing in Albuquerque?

He leaves this last comment hanging, enjoying his smoke in the silence of the night, waiting for it to get a hold of the janitor. Once the cigarettes are done and the last puff of smoke dissipates, he looks up again.
"Do you need another one?" he offers another cigarette "Or maybe something to drink? I may be retired, but I get all too well what it means to be shat upon by everyone when you’re just trying to do your job."
OOC:
Trying to manipulate him into loosening up and chatting in front of a beverage.

EDIT - Oh, I add a +1 from the previous roll, forgot to do that in the roll

EDIT - oh well, never mind

Wagner and the Janitor share a cigarette, and then another..
"I gotta say, it's been a pretty shit night and I could really use a drink, but my wife is gunna be here soon to pick me up."

Wagner nods "I hear you, I hear you. Nights like these… you want the comfort of your home…" he lets the air settle as he puffs another smoke.

"Man, I remember one night… mind you, this was in the late nineties, maybe 2000, no fancy camera-phone, no surveillance craze yet… cops drilled me for hours after – I swear this is true – a f*cking pack of feral wolves had ravaged the cafeteria of this one Walmart. They thought I had let in some druggie youth or something… " Wagner shakes his head "I’m like "DID YOU SEE THE BITE MARKS ON THE CABINETS? DO THEY LOOK LIKE GRAFFITI?" Nothing, they don’t listen. It’s impossible for wolves to get in, they say. Must’ve been someone on drugs looking to steal something, or do vandalism. They never listen when they should... only when you want privacy."

He sighs, hoping that this story will work as bait for the janitor to reveal a bit of his own experience.
OOC:
sorry for the massive delay, wasn't quite sure if I could keep pushing after failing that roll

"Yah. Those bastards in there. Thought I had something to do with that mess on the 11th floor. I mean you think I'd hang around if I just ripped someone's head off? I called them!"

"Geez, that bad uh?" Wagner looks impressed "I got a couple of corpses in my time, but nothing quite as gruesome… head ripped off, damn. You see all sort of things that go bump in the night. I guess this was no gang violence, or accidental overdose, uh…" he gives a dark chuckle.
He lets a few moments pass, not wanting to hound the poor janitor. He talks again only when he fears the wife could be close "Say, give an old night owl like yourself a bit of excitement… it’s 2022. We’re all used to horror in our daily lives. I bet you snatched a photo of that mess. Can I peek?" he gives a curious smile.

I'll roll +Weird for Often Overlooked to appear as unthreatening as possible even as I ask a genuinely creepy question.

partial success:you’re regarded as unthreatening or unimportant. I choose unthreatening

"You're a weirdo man. But you know I couldn't help but snap a pic. I figured no one would believe me if they cleaned it all up. No way you going to see this shot in the paper tomorrow."
He takes his phone back out of his pocket and brings up a photo. It's pretty poor. His cheap phone doesn't take particularly great photos, but Wagner can see that there is definitely a body on the floor which is most certainly missing its head. The head is nowhere in the photo as far as Wagner can tell.
The janitor glances around and then puts his phone away.
"Told ya man. Head clean off. This ain't no gang shit"

"Man, always wanted a gig with a Bank or something that powerful" says Wagner "Walmart or Costco, you always figure some asshole comes in trying to steal a TV or something – but a big corporate building like that one? I thought that’s just white collar crime, no thugs."
He shakes his head "Can’t get into those buildings unarmed, how the hell does one climb to the 10th floor with what, a samurai sword? Looks like a Hollywood movie." he tries his best to keep up the "old lunatic talking to himself" act, hoping the janitor will unbutton thinking it’s only small talk.

"I dunno man. Cops are saying they broke that window on the 11th and got in that way. That don't make no sense. The front door was locked, we supposed to always keep it all locked up after hours, but if you gunna break a window, why not just break one on the first floor? Cops are stupid man. Guy probably picked the lock. Busted the window to confuse those idiots. That's what I say. One thing's for sure. They must not of liked that guy. Why not just shoot him. Must be sending a message to someone. Gangland style. That's my bet."

OOC:
from the janitor's picture and what we saw on the news, was the window broken from the inside or outside?

OOC:
The Janitor's pic is just of the body on the floor of the office so hard to tell from that, but you guys didn't see any glass outside when you looked up and saw the window. So you think outside.

"Yeah, hide behind a badge, they think they are smarter than us... bah." Wagner feels he is stretching the janitor's suspicion a bit too much, and decides to get back to the others "Say man, stay strong. Don't let them make you feel bad. They want us scared, begging for "security" when really they just want to take away our freedom. Thanks for the chat. If you're ever up North West, there's a cozy pub between 4th and El Pueblo, I hang around there sometimes. Drink offer still stands. Night owl to night owl. I'll let you get back to the wife. Have a nice night."

Javi sees the two men parting.

"He didn't want a drink, then." he tells Wagner as he sees him walking back to Cucaracha alone.
"Oh, well. You got any tasty details, from the guy?"
Apr 28, 2022 9:57 am
"Victim's head chopped clean off, that's the highlight." says Wagner "Whatever it was, it came through the window, so it flies or climbs. The janitor suspects nothing, he thinks the broken window is a ruse. He snapped a picture." Wagner describes as best he can what he saw in the blurry picture. "Can’t say he was much help honestly, he mostly ruled out another entry option other than the windows or picking the lock. I’m afraid I wasn’t quite able to ask him as much as I wanted, he refused the drink and was picked up by the wife pretty soon."
Apr 28, 2022 10:50 pm
"Jeez..." he comments at the gruesome detail. "What a way to go..." he instinctively touches his throat.

He stays in silence for a long moment.

Then breaks his grim reverie "Anyway, very little we can do here. Don't know 'bout you... but I need to catch some shut-eye... where do I drop you off?"
OOC:
Javi offers to drive Wagner home - or to a place of his choice if he is too paranoid to reveal where he lives.
Suggest to part, then consider what to do in the morning. They can use the cell phone contact to regroup.
