"Or maybe the thing is trapped, set to explode or something once it's moved," Zangua says, not taking his eyes off the backpack. "Maybe it's what killed the fella downstairs. I'm not opposed to seeing if something's in it, but I ain't being careful."

Wait, did that make sense? Zangua's expression clouds over as he considers his words. "I ain't being too careful, is what I ain't."

When Zangua mentions movement, Leth trains his arrow on the bag, ready to let an arrow fly should it prove to be dangerous.

Redied action: If the bag or something in/under the bag attacks anyone in the party, Leth will shoot at it.

The bag stops moving while you all stand poised and ready around it.

OK, Mordred grabs the base of the pack and attempts to tip it out onto the floor.

As Mordred lifts the pack, a black centipede about a foot long uncoils from beneath it and quickly scurries off to find cover. Leth looses his arrow, bisecting the creature. Its two halves squirm independently for a moment as the arrow ricochets off into the wall.

Zangua shudders. "Guh, I hate bugs."
Jul 28, 2016 10:52 am
Mordred licks his lips and looks forward to roasting the delicious creature over a campfire later. For now, though, he contents himself with checking to see if there is anything else in the pack, or anything unusual about it.

Perception (cue wah-waaaaah trumpet now) - (1d20)

Inside the pack is a hammer, four iron spikes, a wool blanket, a coil of rope, and a package of half-eaten, mostly-rotten rations.
Jul 29, 2016 8:02 pm
Zangua takes a moment to check the south exit, scouting a bit while the others decide what to do with the backpack and its contents.
Jul 29, 2016 8:08 pm
Mordred takes everything but the moldy rations and follows Zangua.
Jul 29, 2016 9:10 pm
The south exit leads to a 40' long hallway with an arched ceiling. There are painted reliefs on the walls of the hallway, although the paint that hasn't flaked off over the years is faded to a uniform dullish tan shade.

The relief on the east side depicts stout, bearded giant bearing the bodies of dead or sleeping men down the side of a mountain, to a valley where a strange figure with a horned head holds aloft a scale and a sword. The relief on the west side is a long table with numerous figures seated around it. The horned figure sits at the center of the table with his arms splayed out, with three human heads between them.

Standing with his hands on his hips Vad inspects the relief on the east side. This... kind of reminds me of something he thinks, tilting his head to the right.

"Well... doesn't this look delightful." Leth comments with a raised eyebrow as he stares at the relief on the west wall, trying to recall if he might know what is going on in the painting.

Nothing of Vad or Leth's historical knowledge sheds any light on the depicted scene. Mordred, however, recognizes certain universal elements of afterlife judgment things: the valley of death, the scale and the sword, the supper of the worthy. Whoever the Zapanim were or are, this horned figure seems to be a central figure in their faith, but it resembles no specific deity known to Mordred.

You all hear a scraping, clattering sound coming from the room at the other end of the hall.

Zangua steps forward to give a line of defense for the rest of the party, and prepares his catchpole for whatever might reveal itself from the far end of the hall.

Mordred hides, to get the drop on whatever approaches.

Not wanting to leave Zangua out in the open alone, Leth steps back a little bit towards the door they just walked through, and sets an arrow on his bowstring. He sights down the arrow towards the far end of the room, hoping that whatever is about to walk in on them is friendlier than he supposes it probably will be.

The noise intensifies, growing louder and more cacophonous, and behind it all you begin to hear a rhythmic, xylophonic beat. The noise quiets down a bit, the xylophone hammers out a rapid pong-pong-pong-pong! then stops.

You hear footsteps.

A lone skeleton shambles into the hallway. It holds a crude stone sword in one hand and a small square cloth is fastened to its chest like a bib. The cloth is old and tattered and bears a painted portrait of a young woman's face.

The skeleton's jaw drops, as if in surprise, and it turns around and starts to stagger agitatedly back the way it came.
