Is it your favorite hook because we haven't noticed it, or are you frustrated that we haven't noticed your favorite hook?
It's mostly just an easter egg, I wouldn't fault anyone for missing it...

"Ah, so that's how you came into the city? Clever. I'm not sure that old beast has any faithful left, it's not clear that the remnants of that house understand their own family history. At any rate, they have been kind enough to not produce heirs, and I look forward to the day when Hazard may claim title over their decrepit manse and stop up that tunnel once and for good."

A young man in a black tunic and a white sash comes down the path from the keep, a bundle of scrolls tucked under his arm. He waits a respectful distance away, and Chorcarz acknowledges him with a glance.

"My affairs of business and state have tracked me down, I'm afraid. You may linger as long as you need, and young Zora is invited to take up residence here for as long as is required for her safety. Rolon will attend you. Is there anything else any of you would have of me before I take leave of you?"
Nov 1, 2016 4:48 pm
"Yeah," says Zangua, mouth muffled with delicious pastry. "What IS this stuff?"
Nov 1, 2016 5:38 pm
"I'm sorry our discussion began so... adversarially, Mr. dra Gahmez. Zora saved my life when I was a young boy on the streets of Sthombo, and as you can imagine, people like her do not often give a second thought to people like me. I owe her everything, and I do get emotional when her safety is threatened. My deepest apologies.

"I do have three additional favors to ask, if I might be so bold? First, we do not know our way around Hazard, and I suspect it will be essential that we travel about the city quickly and without attracting attention. In my experience, those best equipped to guide us in that sort of travel are humble messengers or couriers, especially young ones. Do you have such a messenger in your employ that we might make use of while our adventure keeps us in your fair city? We will of course reimburse you for their salary. Secondly, when we take our leave of your luxurious estate, I think it would be best for all if there was a way we could exit it without being seen. I assume you have such an exit? If so, may we make use of it when we go?"

Mordred looks over at Zangua.

"And another dozen of the crullers, I think."

Leth nearly asks about the Order of the Godlen Worm, but then decides it would only solidify Chorcarz's small opinion of the 6PC by further proving his point. I'll just ask Martjan later...

"One more thing I can think of: I'm sure the authorities are looking for us after our run-in with the cult at the Trading Company. Can we resolve this soon, so we can walk around Hazard freely, without landing ourselves in Jail? And how would you advise us to treat any future encounters with the cult to similarly avoid such a result?"

Chorcarz bites off half a pastry, peers at the other half. "Sheep's cheese. Those little black forest mushrooms, whatever they're called. And of course, Haferan spices." He stands up. "Rolon, fetch Makis Meti and inform him that he will serve as a guide and escort to our guests here while they traverse the city. Reimbursement of salary won't be necessary, of course. Oh, and when they leave the grounds, have them go through the Skink's Door."

"Yes, sir."

Chorcarz turns to Martjan. "I will send for Bautulo, he will accompany you to meet with the District Captain to clear up the matter of...whatever it is that happened at the Trading Company today. Bautulo's presence should be all you need to author whatever version of events and outcome you wish them to put into the official record."

Martjan rolls her eyes. "Bautulo is a pig."

"Bautulo is the best jurisconsult in Hazard."

"I know, I know. I'm grateful, believe me."

Chorcarz looks at Leth. "We can sweep a single incident under the rug easily enough, but I cannot vouchsafe you to wreak havoc in the city with impunity. If the Crown cult confronts you again, try to maintain a posture for yourselves as innocent travelers undeservedly set upon by fanatics. Seek to involve the city guard or other authorities. If one of the cultists can be taken into custody, I will intervene to have him questioned."

Chorcarz and Rolon head up the path toward the keep.

His goodbye seemed a bit brusque, and Mordred wonders if Chorcarz can be trusted, or if he is just discomfited at having some dusty ruffians trampling his flowerbeds.

What should we do, gang? Mordred is inclined to track down the elves, as he has never had the chance to have too many dealings with other non-humans and the idea of meeting actual elves is very appealing to him. He would be willing to hear other ideas as well.

Chorcarz seemed to want to check in with that scroll-bearing messenger in a hurry. Certainly, he is a man with many irons in many fires, so any number of things could be demanding his attention right now.

"Does that man in the white sash mean anything to you, Martjan? Chorcarz seems in a hurry to speak with him."
Nov 1, 2016 7:14 pm
"It's a messenger from the Trigon. He's carrying daily reports on the state of the city, its finances, its neighbors, it's dark secrets, what-have-you." She watches Chorcarz confer with the messenger, take one of the scrolls, and read it as he ascends to the keep. "If there's anything in there that needs to be dealt with, he'll throw a feast with his nephew's father's family, and in between bouts of debauchery they'll come to some sort of agreement about what's to be done, and then, wouldn't you know, that will turn out to be exactly the advice the gods whisper to little nephew the next day. And that, my dears, is how you run a city of three hundred thousand people."
Nov 1, 2016 8:36 pm
"Martjan, do you need assistance in dealing with the District Captain? I am happy to be part of explaining what happened this morning. Well, happy is the wrong word, but I did kill one of the attackers and can speak as an employee of the Company to what transpired.

That being said, I do feel the tug of adventure - as I think we both knew I would eventually. If this group would have me, I would like to join them and see what more of the story we can discover. Plus, I am very interested to hear more of the journey that brought them here. The king of the badgerways and this mechanical man sounds very much like the beginnings of a ballad."

"That won't be necessary, Domarc. The idea here is that when they see Bautulo, they'll know that getting to the bottom of this will be more trouble than it's worth. I'd rather you stayed with Zora's friends. I'm sure the guide Chorcarz will provide is trustworthy, but...I think it's best if he's not the only one familiar with the city leading you all around. And you," she says, turning to Zora, "for the love of everything sacred, stay here awhile. You've been through enough danger already."

Zora looks at Mordred. "I'll stay here for as long as they're in Hazard...I don't want to attract any attention that might put them in danger. But if what we learn means we have to leave the city to deal with the Sphere, I'm going with them, you can't stop me." Her gaze shifts to the walls surrounding the estate. "Or maybe you can," she mutters.

"One step at a time," Martjan says. "Gods, I don't even know if it's safe for me to go back to my business. I'll go mad if I have to hide out here. Maybe if we added a few more guards-for-hire..."
Nov 2, 2016 12:24 am
"Want me to stay with you?" Zangua asks. "I'm not much for the nosing around in secret. And maybe them guard's still got it out for me 'cause of what happened."

Felor listens to the conversation in silence - big city politics and rich pastries all being a bit too much for his mind and stomach to take in at once. The mention of the Order of the Golden Worm does peak his interest, and he also ponders if it's connected to the "Wormfellow" they saw mentioned in the tunnels.
OOC:
Tracking down the elf seems as good a course of action as any. Probably no need to investigate the 6PC directly, I imagine we will run into them again anyway. We could then attempt the capture/interrogation of one of them.

PBO: Do I know enough about the Sphere to use the spell Locate Object?
Quote:
Describe or name an object that is familiar to you. You sense the direction to the object’s location, as long as that object is within 1,000 feet of you. If the object is in motion, you know the direction of its movement.
The spell can locate a specific object known to you, as long as you have seen it up close–within 30 feet–at least once. Alternatively, the spell can locate the nearest object of a particular kind, such as a certain kind of apparel, jewelry, furniture, tool, or weapon.

"If we plan to stay in Hazard for a short time, I would suggest we speak with the Elves who are here. Going to the Shrine might draw the attention of the Pointy Hat Crew, so we might want to plan for that both in terms of potentially capturing one of them and the fact that it might tip them to the fact that we understand at least some of their plan.

I would be more than happy to assist. I have some knowledge of the city, and I also speak Elven...and because I am a curious fellow, I would also like to know what situation in Engol has caused the two Elves to seek refuge here."
Nov 2, 2016 3:58 pm
Sure, we'll say Felor saw the Sphere once, you can cast Locate Object. However, you know nothing about the OotGW.

Zora assures Zangua that she'll be fine, that the party is safer with him accompanying them.

After a few moments have passed, you see two figures coming down the path: a thin young man in a teal-and-gray hooded tunic, and the serving woman from earlier.

Sounds like you all want to go to the Temple of Isis to talk to elves first?
Nov 2, 2016 4:54 pm
OOC:
Nice! Will grab that spell next time we have a long rest.
Nov 2, 2016 7:19 pm
Let's go! I assume this behoodied youngster is our guide?
Nov 2, 2016 8:24 pm
The thin youth waves to you with his left arm, which draws your attention to the fact that he appears to be missing his right arm entirely. "Greetings to all of you!" he says. "I am Makis Meti. The Generous Master says I am to guide you about the city, wherever you wish to go."

The serving woman sets a cloth bundle down on the table and turns to depart.

"Well, when it was happening, it was a lot less exciting and a lot more terrifying." Leth comments. "Although, speaking of ballads and old stories... do you, or anyone else, happen to know anything about that Golden Worm he mentioned?" He asks, mostly directing the question at Domarc and Martjan.
