Fuck. If those fire bells are not coming from the Gahmez estate, Mordred will eat his horns.

Mordred reaches deep into his arcane abilities. He casts Thaumaturgy to dim all the flames in the square as low as possible. Seconds later, another instance of the cantrip creates the sound of an explosion from out of sight behind a building. Seconds after that, a Minor Illusion causes the sounds of screams and wailing from the same general area for the next minute.

"Come on!" he whispers to Zangua and the rest. "We've got to get out of here!"

The guards whip their heads around at the sights and sounds of Mordred's arcane trickery. "This is madness!" one of them snaps. They exchange quick glances and split up to investigate.

Meanwhile, by Ziu-Pater's temple, the guard there manages to disperse the crowd that had set itself upon Darux, who now lays bloody and unconscious on the ground, not far from the body of the old man he killed.

The priestess sits up, as confused as the rest, wondering what fresh hell this new commotion heralds.

Domarc uses Message on Zangua.

"Going to see what's what out there. I think the best play is to stay here and cooperate for as long as it seems sensible. Will be back. Ta!"

Domarc then slips away, heading back towards the estate.

Insight check, anyone but Domarc?

Felor, not sure whether to flee with Mordred or not, tries to make sense of the scene around him.

With everyone distracted by Mordred's cantrips, it occurs to Felor that if there was ever a time to just run for it, this might be it.

"What?" Leth whispers back to Mordred. "But... we can't leave now; that will only make us look guilty!"

"They'll call us guilty whatever we look like! Remember Sthombo?" With that, Felor makes off after Mordred.

Leth reckons that fire-bells on the north side of town have a considerably greater than zero chance of meaning that Zora and the others are in danger.

Leth curses and takes off after the others, dismayed to be thrown back into danger just when he thought they had a caught a breather... and hoping they make it in time to help Zora and Martjan.

Zangua, are you going with or still surrendering?

Zangua's street smarts tell him it would be smart to hit the streets right now and follow the others.

~meanwhile, on the north side of town~

The meeting had been an awkward one, to be sure. The knife was an antique, yes, and the cinnabar gems embedded in its hilt gave it value, certainly, but without a better record of its provenance, there was absolutely no way to confirm that the knife was, in fact, the fabled Vermillion Vespa of Iwhan the Dancer, and to be really blunt about it, it looked far more like a Darcran ritual knife than anything likely to have come out of Gurmar during Iwhan's reign. But try telling an obscenely rich collector that his prized acquisition wasn't worth a fraction of what he'd paid for it...with all the bluster and denial and wounded pride he'd had to assuage, Vhezyen had hardly even had the opportunity to process his own disappointment that he likely wasn't going to get the chance to study the unique enchantments the legendary blade was said to hold, after all.

The fire-bells had saved him from dwelling on the unpleasant encounter for too long. They started not long after he'd left the collector's house, and it wasn't long before he saw the orange glow over the rooftops and the smoke obscuring the stars, and he quickened his pace to get himself to the scene of the blaze. Rare was the wealthy homeowner in this part of town who didn't own at least some treasures of historical or numinous import that wouldn't be worth trying to save...

Zangua uses the distraction to hasten his escape and follows the others into the night. He laments losing the catchpole, but better that than his head.

Leth hurriedly says to the Priestess as they pass by her, "Sorry we can't stay to clear this up; our friends are in danger!" It sounds like a pathetic excuse, and he knows it, but to him it's worth saying. His greatest concern is what lies the false acolyte - and possibly Darux, if he survives - might weave in their absence, but there's nothing to be done about it now.

If y'all could refer back to this map, which route would you want to take back to the Gahmez estate?

Vhezyen knew these streets like the back of his hand. Although he no longer prowled them as he once did, casing homes and businesses for late night heists, he was familiar enough to know the shortcuts. The bells still rang, distorting anything useful to be gleaned from listening, but he could smell the smoke as he drew near to whatever structural conflagration lay ahead.

He glanced up at the glow in the sky again, maintaining his bearings as he moved through streets, keeping one eye over his shoulder as he did so. Complimenting his efforts to see others before being seen, on the lookout for the looters to descend like wolves on sick prey, he took the occasional glance through his familiar's eyes, a small brown owl resting on his shoulder. A question tugged at his mind: What is on fire?
