"Up is promising..."

Mordred takes the point, sneaking quietly up the steps.

Zangua nods. "Perhaps we've reached the end?" he asks, rhetorically. He waits for the others to advance, keeping an eye on the chamber lest something attempt to approach from behind.

As you ascend the stairs, a large rat runs downstairs past you.

The stairs end at a long hallway going west about 55'.
Sep 12, 2016 6:17 pm
Can we see what is at the end of the hall?
Sep 12, 2016 6:20 pm
The end of the hall is a wall with another painting of the horned figure Zapan. To its right, leading north, is a door.

Waiting with Zangua as Mordred reconnoitres the stairs, Felor watches the rat run past, mildly curious if the local rat population is the same species as those in Jerma.

It's a bit larger and darker than the Jermal rats Felor is used to seeing.

Examining the picture carefully for any further information about Zapan, Mordred eases open the door, and peeks inside the next room.

The painting lacks text or details; you can't glean anything from it that you didn't already see in the earlier paintings.

The door opens to an octagonal room about 35' wide. Opposite the door, on the north side of the room, are stairs leading up to another door, with wide, white marble banisters. Two tall pinkish-gray marble urns stand on either side of the stairs, and in front of each urn, a stone bowl made of the same marble. The door at the top of the stairs is made of a rich, dark reddish-brown wood, with four horns (the same sort as on the Zapan figure) carved into it in: two pointing up and two pointing down.

Mordred waves the rest of the party up the stairs and examines the bowls and urns.
Sep 13, 2016 5:02 pm
They appear to be empty, although you can't really see into the very bottom of the urns. They're nearly six feet tall.

Zangua attempts to club the large rat with his catchpole as it runs past. Worst-case scenario, it's tonight's dinner.
OOC:
Does the catchpole's poison automatically release upon slashing, or can it be controlled? If it isn't triggered automatically, I'd like to attack the rat with the blade, too.

Rolls

Hunting for dinner, damage - (1d20+7, 1d4+5)

1d20+7 : (11) + 7 = 18

1d4+5 : (3) + 5 = 8

Sep 13, 2016 5:09 pm
The metal itself seems to be poisoned, so it isn't controllable.

Zangua thumps the rat with the end of his catchpole as it runs by. The rat lets out a loud squeal and flips tail-over-head down the next step, but quickly regains its footing and keeps running.
Sep 13, 2016 5:12 pm
Zangua reaches for his waist, but freezes. "Ah, crap," he laments. "Did anyone pick up my crossbow? I dropped it for someone to use back in the skeleton hall, but I don't think any of you did."

Barring any reply to the positive, Zangua turns and heads back to retrieve his weapon.
Sep 13, 2016 5:20 pm
Zangua heads back to the skeleton room. The rat appears to be heading the same way.

When Zangua reaches the spot where he left his crossbow, the rat runs off toward the east exit.
Sep 13, 2016 5:23 pm
If he has time and the opportunity, Zangua will fire off a bolt at the rat. Should it disappear into the darkness, he eschews the attack and rejoins the party.

Rolls

Hand Crossbow for dinner, damage (if able) - (1d20+4, 1d6+2)

1d20+4 : (4) + 4 = 8

1d6+2 : (3) + 2 = 5

Sep 13, 2016 5:30 pm
The rat is moving fast enough that by the time you get the crossbow up and aimed, he'd be far enough into the darkness of whatever is east of the skeleton room that you wouldn't have a clear shot, so I'll assume you save the bolt and go back to the party.
Sep 13, 2016 5:39 pm
Zangua lowers his crossbow, stomach protesting the missed opportunity. He returns up the stairs to the party.
Sep 13, 2016 5:51 pm
Wait, where did the rat come from? The door at the end of the hallway was closed, right? Are there rat-sized holes in the hallway or the octagonal room? Or, fuck, the thing we were chasing is a shapeshifter, maybe?
