Grim holds his crossbow at the ready, as the door to the small room is opened and only slightly lowers it when nothing happens. "Nothing to see here. Shall we continue our sweep across the hall?" He gestures to the door unopened (N27).

"Every little thing could help us and those poor people," he said, intent on finding something useful. If not, he'd sigh and continue to the next door and the unknown beyond.

A quick search won't take that long. Perhaps we can find some supplies for these people. Elias says as he steps in to do a quick look around.

Mighty iron boilers crowd the room here, their pipes piercing the walls and ceiling. Shadows and rust fill the narrow gaps between the cold tanks.

You surmise that the furnace found approximately just below you, outside the cells you awoke from yesterday, likely heated the water here, which then circulated to the laundry, showers, and other areas of the asylum.

He raised a hand to get the others' attention then pointed with the other at the glow beneath the boiler.

As he reached out to feel the anagogic auras in the room, he felt less useless than before. He now had a vital skill, one he shared with Glasses, even if he wasn't the strongest or the deadliest with a weapon.

"Well, there is definitely something under the boiler." Grim says crouching down for a better look. he reaches out with his mind and attempts to grab whatever is producing the glow.

As Grim reaches out to magically manipulate the source of the glow, you notice the glow disappear for a moment, only to reappear a second later. It seems to move in the shadows.

Whatever lies behind the broiler seems content to remain a mystery at this time. Those gathered are left to wonder: should they approach and inspect more closely, or let well enough alone and explore other areas?

As some of you exit back into the hallway to leave, one of you approaches the boiler and the glow emanating from behind it. As you get closer, the glow blinks out again for the briefest of moments when you realize that what you are seeing are the blinking of luminescent, otherworldly eyes, a pair of them clearly seen now as you draw nearer. No longer content to hide, the source of the glow rushes out from the pipes.
While two of the three creatures that attack appear to be nothing more than oversized rodents of a typical variety, the third is a strange amalgam of beastly appendages and features: aside from the luminous eyes, it sports a rat’s tail, simian appendages, and tendrils extending from a mole-like nose. Though smaller than the rats, the creature maneuvers carefully, allowing its larger brethren to take the front.

Light burst around the rat things, threatening to overload their eyes and their vocal cords!
All creatures in a 10-foot-radius burst from the target point are dazzled for 1 minute unless they make a successful DC 16 Fortitude save. Sightless creatures, as well as creatures already dazzled, are not affected by flare burst.
In addition from my bloodline... One affected target that fails its save suffers the choking airlessness of the void, silencing it (as silence, but affecting only the target) for 1 round. Order of silencing preference: star nosed rat > others.

Grim hears the sounds behind him and turns to see the rats and whatever it is scurrying out to attack. He takes a shot with his crossbow and continues through the open doorway and back into the long hall.
