Descending the Temple Depths

All that has been said about Raynor being a god of fire and conquest races through Deoring’s head.

Taking heed of Rook’s warning, he starts walking along.

After a minute of thought he asks Albert, "Do you remember enough to teach me how to, as you said, accept the fire of Raynor?"

While cleaning your machete, you almost think you spot a small glint of light from it, but maybe it was just a reflection? Anyway, it is gone by the time you move out.

Scouting ahead is hard with all the chatter from those following not far behind --talk is good, though and important to keep the morale up-- and the inconstant light from the occasional glowing fungus forms pools of darkness that each could be hiding more creepy-crawlies.

The shifting and moving glow from the weapons behind you cast your own shadow out in front down the corridor.

The architecture becomes more complex. There are now doorways on either side of the passage, leading to rooms that --in the wan fungal light-- appear empty at a casual glance.

What do you all do?

"Well, that depends on what you mean by accepting Raynor's fire" Albert answers Deoring "If you wish to become an initiate of the temple, then I'm afraid I cannot be of any help. Even though I am free to call people to the faith, I am not a temple representative and might therefor risk penalties or even banishment." He says this with great gravity in his voice.

"However, if you wish to accept Raynor into your life, all you need to do is be willing to do so." Albert picks up a small flat rock from the floor, grabs his dagger and carves a symbol in it. He then hands it to Deoring. The stone now has a crude circle on it and within that circle is a triangle. "Here, take this. This is the symbol of Raynor. Use it to focus on when you need guidance. You'd be surprised how often it will help you in a time of doubt or confusion." He then puts the dagger away again as he cites another verse.

"When it's guidance that I need
And my route is lost indeed
It will always be okay
Raynor's fire will light my way"

"Now, I have to add that Raynor is primarily the god of conquest. He has tasked me, and anyone willing to help, with cleansing this temple. I have no doubt that he is already watching over all of us." He says as he taps his broomstick where the glowing light can be seen.

At this point Albert notices the doorways on either side. "Hmm, let's keep an eye out here. We might be disturbing more creature's lairs." he peers inside one of the rooms but does not enter it.

OOC:
Roald tries to get to know the captain better as they walk
''So... Have you always been a captain?''
- ''No of course not''
Stupid question Roald, you idiot
'' Right, of course.
Do you like your job?''

- ''yes''
Damnit...
After a few minutes Roald gathers all his courage.
'' Should we just keep calling you Captain or would you prefer your real name?''
-'' oh, captain is fine, I don't mind''

Maybe she will open up when we know each other better. Roald thinks as they walk along in silence.

When Albert mentions "penalties and banishment", Dirk scoffs, "Penalties and banishment for just helping someone become an initiate huh? So many ways to trip up in the temple cult."

Dirk tries to gather bunches of the glowing mushrooms in order to make a portable bright light source. This will be a lot safer than using fire.

The mushrooms smell unpleasant, and handling them makes your skin tingle, but you manage to collect a goodly amount of the glowing ones.

Adding them together in a bunch makes the light-source bigger, but not significantly brighter. At least you can move them to where you need them.

Dirk enters one of the seemingly empty rooms and examines it under the glow of the stinky mushroom bunch.

This rooms looks like it might have been library or study a long time ago. The walls show signs that they had copious shelves lining them, but all the wood and books has been eaten by time and rot.

Another room has a solid stone table in the middle with, possibly, the faintest outline of carvings on it, buried under the moss if you choose to dig. You can not see enough to discern their intended meaning.

Albert keeps guard by the doorway where Dirk enters. "Be careful in there, Dirk. Who knows what else is lurking down here."

Deoring accepts the stone from Albert with reverence.

"Thank you, Albert, for this talisman of Raynor and for your guidance. Of course I accept Raynor into my life after the blessings he has just bestowed on me. Let us continue on our quest to cleanse this place."

Full of zeal, Deoring follows Dirk into the second room. As he does so, those close by might hear him whisper:

- Dirk and Deoring (and anyone else checking the rooms) -

Most of the corridors and rooms down here appear to have been untouched for... centuries? It is hard to say, but the thickness of the moss growth and rings(†) on the fungus suggest a very long time.

On the way out of the side-room, there are what look like signs of a more recent (though still pretty old, and covered-over) 'human activity'. There are gouges in the moss and the mushrooms are all newer-looking, like someone tried to clear them away a few decades ago.

Any 'reasons' for such activity is unclear at a casual examination.

Dirk checks the rotten remains of the books, looking for any information that may still remain. Unfortunately, who couldn't find anything useful, save a for a few random glyphs here and there. He checks to see if he recognizes the language.

In the room with the stone table, Dirk clears away the moss on the table and sketches the outlines underneath.

In the way out-of-side room, Dirk clears away the more recent mushrooms to see why they were cleared away before.

Noticing Deoring following him, Dirk tries to spark up a conversation; "Hey Deoring, what do you make of all this here? This is like a gold mine for me, I love ancient old things. It's a shame that these mushrooms have destroyed and covered a lot of the stuff."

Roald is waiting in the hallway. Thinking about the disappearing skeleton he would like to get moving again.
''Hey guys, I understand this is all very interesting, but we should really move on.''
OOC:
Roald is on the lookout for the floor getting wet, indicating the water is rising. If the path is going downhill there should be water, if they are walking uphill there is a good chance they could get trapped in here.

It might be that the type and shape of the previous clearing work indicates some form of makeshift fortification or barrier. Why someone would do that you can not tell.

There are no pages left after centuries of decay, but a few covers were made of something like resin covered metal and some pieces remain, just enough for you to assemble a guess about the language used.

• Why is the language the glyphs suggest really bad news for all of you down here?
• Do you tell the others what you find?

- Roald -

The moss feels about as dry as it always was, but it will take a long time for water to make its way through such a absorbent system of porous plan-matter.

The springy and undulating floor-covering makes it almost impossible to guess if you are going up- or downhill, or keeping to a level, there have been no stairs, so far. Maybe you can devise a way to tell as you progress?

"I agree with Roald." Albert chimes in. "I'd be much happier if we were to find a place without exploding mushrooms. My coughing is only getting worse as time passes down here." He makes sure Dirk and Deoring are out of the room before continuing onward.

"Woah! I recognize these symbols from the ancient Drow!" Dirk exclaims. He's seen these symbols used in Drow black magic spells and curses, but these symbols seem to be more primitive than that. A sharp chill runs down his spine. Dirk carefully walks backwards out from the room into the hall, as if he just realized he almost fell into a pit. He's white as a sheet.
"Roald's got a point, the less we spend in this evil place the better. Let's get going, this place wasn't made by friendly folk."
Mar 16, 2022 1:37 pm
Albert can't really see the hue of Dirk's face, but recognized a change of the tone in his voice. "I'm not sure who or what these drow are, but this place is starting to give me the creeps too, Dirk. Is that what those giant centipedes are called?"
