Descending the Temple Depths

"Well, they did before, up in the main temple hall. So it's possible, but with all of us here I think we'll make short work of them!" Albert replies to Deoring just before he hears the sound of moving parts coming from Rook's direction "What was that?"
Mar 21, 2022 7:41 am
Roald also hears the grinding noise. Stating the obvious he shouts ''Rook, don't move!'' and starts making his way towards Rook, carefully choosing where to put his feet. The stepping stones Rook created are a great idea, up until now that is...
OOC:
If Roald makes it there unharmed he will try to put extra weight on the stone (a stone on the trigger, a stick or torch horizontally over that stone to create more space to put a lot of stones on it) to keep the trigger from coming back up. And Rook can step off.
Mar 22, 2022 1:46 am
"...Well, it appears I have indeed found a trap..." Rook says nervously. "It seems to be holding as long as I keep my weight here. I heard a grinding noise near the fallen bones there. I would appreciate if someone might go over there and see if they can locate what might have caused it. It'd be preferable to know what I'm dealing with."
Mar 22, 2022 3:23 am
Deoring tries to follow the cleared path over towards Rook saying, "I can go check the bones. Tell me what to look for on the floor to avoid tripping another trap."

If he can safely get to near where Rook and Roald are standing, he’ll await instructions before continuing on towards the guard bones.
OOC:
VagueGM let me know if I need to roll to try to get Deoring up to Rook.

If Rook and Roald want Deoring’s help getting Rook off the pressure plate first, he’s available for that.
Mar 22, 2022 7:57 am
Albert watches the others deal with Rook's predicament from a safe distance. He knows nothing about traps and how to disable or disarm them. Best leave this to the others, they seem to have an idea of how to handle this. Besides, if anyone does get hurt, it's better that I'm not one of them, so I can try and heal those wounds.

He grips his staff tightly, nervous about what'll happen next. With the others preoccupied helping Rook, he starts scanning the room for movement, so he can warn them in time if anything pops up.

"I will go and check, Rook. In the mean time, maybe you to can try to put more weight on the trigger until it's safe for you to step off. But please warn me before you do so."

Roald follows the path toward the skeletons. He is moving carefully, one step at a time, only lifting a foot when he is sure no trap is triggered.
Mar 23, 2022 6:13 am
Dirk realizes that the mushrooms are making him feel ill, so he drops them to the ground. He watches the rest of the group as they try to solve the trap, he holds his machete up just in case a fight breaks out. It's then he notices his blade glowing faintly. Huh, I guess Raynor might care about me as well.

While waiting, he approaches Albert and says; "Hey Albert, do you recognize the design of this machete? I got from an old priest, you think it has anything to do with Raynor?"
Mar 24, 2022 8:01 am
Albert takes the machete from Dirk when he offers it to him. "I'd probably need more light to really get a ..." Albert's sentence breaks off as he feels the chill of fear running through his spine. In his mind, he sees an image of the horned wolf.

The machete falls out of his hands, thumping onto the mossy stones below. "I... I'm sorry about that. I don't know what came over me there." He looks down at the lightly glowing blade. "Something about your weapon sent a chill up my spine. In a bad way. Like I didn't want to hold it, or rather, ... it doesn't want to be in my hands. Where did you get it, and what kind of priest was it?" He looks a bit rattled by what just happened, and doesn't attempt to pick it up again.

Dirk stoops down and picks up the machete. "Huh, I guess that answered that question. I don't know whose cult the priest belonged to, but it's a great little tool. In any case, it's good to feel wanted by a machete, heh."
I'm not sure if I should be concerned about that reaction, but I at least know that I didn't steal from Raynor.

Albert leans a bit closer to Dirk to talk a bit more privately. "When I touched the blade, I saw the horned wolf symbol before me. I saw it before, up in the main room of the temple. Unfortunately, I don't know what it means, but I believe it could be a bad omen." He puts a hand on Dirk's shoulder and looks him in the eyes. "Does this symbol of a horned wolf have any meaning to you? In either case, be careful while you wield that thing."

You are able to make your way over to Rook, but the floor ahead has not been made safe so you will need to be careful as you move closer to the skeletons.

There is only so much Rook can do to direct you from afar, but, with his guidance, you stand as good a chance as any of getting up to the bones.

• What precautions are you taking to avoid more traps?
OOC:
A roll may be called for based on what you are doing.

You have seen surprisingly few heavy pieces scattered on the floors in this underground temple. Unless you want to prise up a paving-stone, you are probably stuck with mainly moss and some slightly-woody fungus... or whatever you have in your packs.

If you want to try investigate the intricacies of the trap mechanism, maybe you can be the eyes (and feet... and hands) for your trapped trap expert?

What do you do?

- Dirk -

You immediately started to feel better after dropping the mushrooms, but are still queasy and a bit light-headed. It is dark now, without the light you were carrying, and everything --including your companion, right next to you-- looks a little hazy.

You know from similar experience --at dig-sites (with heat-stroke and such)-- that you probably should drink lots of water to flush your system, but the very thought of taking anything in by mouth makes you shudder.

What do you do?

Taking the advice of Rook to try to find and follow a safe path, Deoring mutters under his breath,

"When it's guidance that I need
And my route is lost indeed
It will always be okay
Raynor's fire will light my way"

He clutches his talisman of Raynor in his left hand, while holding his sword in his right hand, probing the floor in front of him. He slowly moves forward towards the bones, checking the floor under the "carpet" of mushrooms, moss and muck, looking for (and hoping not to find) any wires, triggers or loose stones.
Mar 26, 2022 3:17 am
Rook shifted slightly, trying make his stance a bit more comfortable. "Thank you, Deoring. Not a clue what you should look for... a metal trap might not last in these damp environs, so I'd say look for heavy weighted stone of some sort. It'd have to be big to reach to where I am from the wall, unless it's part of a multi-stage trap."

While the others try to get Rook out of a bad spot, Albert is keeping an eye on the way the party came from. "Is there anything I can do to help?" He asks with his back half turned towards the group.
Mar 28, 2022 2:26 am
Deoring sees Roald also moving forward and sends a quick mental plea to Raynor to watch over them both as they move forward.

"Hey Roald, I will probe for triggers and loose stones with my sword to see what might be threatening Rook and to clear our path forward. While my attention is focused on the floor, would you watch for threats and push or pull me out of the way if something suddenly comes towards us?"

Responding to Albert's earlier comment Dirk says; "I also saw that image earlier when I rang the bell, quite peculiar! Hopefully it doesn't mean my trusty machete is cursed."

Dirk briefly considers going back to the stairwell for a drink, but decides against it. It's not worth being attacked by a centipede. . .

He keeps his hazy eyes peeled for any source of water around.

Roald nods at Deoring. ''alright, sounds like a plan.''
Roald positions himself behind Deoring ready to act at the slightest abnormal sound or movement. The path is uneven and there are gaps between the stepping stones. When he sees Deoring losing his balance, he quickly puts his hand on Deoring's shoulder to prevent him from falling.

''These stones are treacherous, I would hate to see you sprain your ankle Deoring. Let's take it slowly so you can focus on your investigation .''

Maybe Albert should have warned you that when Raynor --a god of conquest-- is inclined to provide divine guidance, it tends to be direct.

With Roald's support you are able to maintain your balance and stay on your feet despite the shifting surface... But, it is not uneven stones that shifted under you feet, it is, instead, a foot --albeit a bony one-- attached to a leg bone which is in turn attached to... well you can't see the rest, but you get the picture. It seems another skeleton lies, buried under the moss and slime several paces from the doors, and it is that which moved as you stood on it...

And keeps moving afterwards! A roughly human sizes patch of moss tries to rise up from the floor, but is weighed down by the sheer mass of plant and fungal growth.
