Descending the Temple Depths

Deoring, spooked by the skeleton seemingly coming to life, panics and starts hacking at it with his sword.
OOC:
Not being cautious or quiet about it - he’s freaking out and reacting instinctively, with no thoughts about Raynor or of Roald or any of the rest of the party.

"Hey Albert, do you have some water I can drink? I'm feeling really queasy from all those mushrooms."
Mar 29, 2022 8:02 am
Roald, still with his hand on Deoring's left shoulder
OOC:
Guessing he is a righty and was using his right arm to probe
sees something moving in the corner of his eye. He feels Deoring's muscles tense up as he starts hacking at something.
''What the...''
From his position behind Deoring, Roald can't reach the thing.
If I let go he will probably fall, if I hold on, I can't help him
Still holding on to Deoring he draws his sword, making sure it doesn't affect the movement of Deoring's sword.

'' CAPTAIN! WE NEED SOME HELP OVER HERE!'' he shouts.
'' WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!''

'' Try to fend him off as long as you can Deoring. Help is on the way.''

OOC:
Moments before the above events with Deoring and Roald.
Apparently seeing your plight, the captain steps over and hands you the water-skin from her belt --it is plump and full, which probably means she has not been drinking enough since you came down here.

"Drink." She says compassionately before returning to watching the whole scene carefully. "It will make you feel better."

Albert was speaking quietly, so she would have no way of knowing what 'image' you are referring to, but she seems interested --though, no more interested than she is about every detail happening here. If you want to involve her in the discussion she would be open to that.

- Deoring -

It is hard to tell if your hacking is having any effect on the buried skeleton... aside from helping to free it from the moss covering, of course. Its movements --from what you can judge-- seem sluggish, but then everyone is a bit sluggish when first waking up.

- Roald -

Your drawn sword's glow seems brighter than before, though maybe that is just the result of the surrounding darkness. It is calming, and does make you feel less stressed by the situation at hand, though, hopefully it also helps your crazed companion.
OOC:
We have become a bit disjointed in time between the conversation and the exploration phases. I am going to give Dirk a moment to engage with the captain before they are interrupted by the action.
(I missed the posts on this page 11 before responding, the site's habit of not mentioning that there are more posts on a new page seems like a common tripping point):

"Say, captain, ..." Albert says as the captain comes over to offer her water to Dirk. He's still speaking quietly, keeping the conversation between the three of them. "Remember that horned wolf we saw in the main hall yesterday? It turns out Dirk saw it as well, earlier today, when the bell tolled. And I saw it in my head just now when I touched Dirk's machete." He looks at the machete again, wondering what caused that reaction. "I'm starting to think that symbol is more important than we first thought."

He turns his head to Dirk again. "Dirk, you were looking through some old books and papers earlier. Did you spot that symbol anywhere on them? If so, we might need to go back for that information. We need to know what we're dealing with here."
OOC:
I'm guessing at some point our conversation will get interrupted by what's happening with the others. How far into the conversation should that be?
Mar 29, 2022 1:43 pm
The 'old books and papers' that Dirk looked at earlier were more like a few disparate scraps, and not enough to form any connections with the horned-wolf symbol. They were also a lot older than the graffiti that was daubed on the wall above.

If there is a connection between the symbol and the so-called 'drow', it is an oblique one and not in evidence yet.
OOC:
I think we can cut to the action after Dirk has had a chance to respond one more time?

@sunnyVoid: If you were deliberately keeping Dirk's vision secret, and if Albert just violated Dirk's trust by blabbing, say so and we can decide if that violation happened in game or if we should edit it out. If you merely neglected to act upon the opportunities to bring it up (the story often moves on before we get to reply) and are happy with others knowing, and with the captain's input, let us know and we can carry on... after the fight.

Rook continued to shift uneasily on the foot weighing down the stone trigger. He watched with worry as Roald and Deoring continued to approach the doorway, straining to make out any details in the dim light.
Mar 30, 2022 10:50 am
"Big thanks captain, these mushrooms are doing a number on me." Dirk tries his best to force the water down his throat, taking in as many sips as he can muster, working against his gag reflex.

After Albert walks up and talks about the horned wolf, Dirk responds; "Well Albert, all those old ruined books and papers before had no illustrations. I really don't know much about that horned wolf, and to be honest it's the first I've even heard of a concept of a horned wolf! It's all quite spooky if you ask me. . . Woah now!" Dirk suddenly started to lose his balance, but the captain kept him from falling over. "Thanks again captain.
Mar 30, 2022 11:03 am
"'Horned wolf'?" The captain asks, one of her hands subconsciously going to her pocket and almost causing her to drop Dirk.

"Something about that... rings a bell --if you will pardon the phrase." She tries to make light --if you will pardon the phrase-- of the earlier, deafening encounter. "But I can't quite put my finger on it..."

Her musings are interrupted by the commotion of the skeleton attempting to rise from the floor. "Oh, no. Not again!" Both the captain and Asha say in unison.

Rook is still balanced on the scales of the trap, unable to move without risking setting it off to unknown effect.

What do you all do?
OOC:
Dirk: If you want to try to get enough water down to eliminate the effects of the 'mushroom poisoning', roll +CON, but be aware that, on a 6-, things can get worse for a while. Or you can keep it narrative and have the condition stick around for later consequences.
Mar 30, 2022 12:09 pm
Dirk giggles at the bell pun and takes a swig of the water. Mid-swig, he sees what's happening and tries to swallow down the water faster!

Rolls

Swallow down the water to eliminate food poisoning effect +CON - (2D6+1)

(44) + 1 = 9

You manage to keep some of the water down, and that will probably make you start feeling better in a little while. Hopefully you can hold out long enough to deal with the emerging situation.

Albert Quickly grabs his broomstick when he hears Roald calling for help. "Hang on, we're coming!" He follows the captain to where they can see what's going on near the door. When he gets there, it's not very clear what exactly is happening. "What is Deoring hacking away at?" Is it the vegetation or something underneath, maybe?

He hesitates to do anything about it. Knowing that there could be traps all over this room, and unsure about what he's dealing with, Albert decides to assess the situation before acting.
Mar 30, 2022 7:34 pm
Deoring, still in panic mode, continues to hack at the rising skeleton and will continue to do so until someone stops him or something radically changes.
Apr 1, 2022 11:37 am
At the shout from Roald about being 'under attack' the captain springs into action, drawing her sword and striding forward, with no regard for unseen traps.

"To arms!" She calls to the party.

"Um..." Asha says, though whether her hesitancy is due to caution about traps, or the (not dead enough) dead, is hard to tell. She hangs near Albert, her hand on the axe at her belt.

• Does anyone try to calm --or focus-- Deoring?
• Does anyone take the time to (literally) encourage Asha?
• Does anyone try to stop the captain from blundering into any traps and making that situation worse?

The fight is on, it seems.

• What do you all do?
Apr 1, 2022 12:47 pm
Albert Nudges Asha. "Come on, we've got to go keep Rook safe!" He hurries over to where Rook is standing, trying his best to follow his footsteps, or at least an approximation of them. Once there, he puts his foot on Rook's to make sure it's not going anywhere, and he holds his broomstick horizontally in front of them, ready to ward off any attackers. "Guard the other side, Asha. We'll show these things they are no match for us!"
OOC:
I assumed I can get to Rook safely, if I need to roll for that, let me know.
Apr 2, 2022 12:40 am
"What are you doing?" Rook hissed. "Walking dead men or no, you've just exposed yourself to the target zone of any trap that lies here. If we move, we may both die, instead of just one. You should help them, or else run for it!"
Apr 2, 2022 4:30 am
Deoring continues to hack at the rising skeleton, but not quite as recklessly. He has noticed Roald’s reassuring hand on his shoulder, and that is helping, but he’s still frightened by this living skeleton.

Deoring says to Roald, "It’s a skeleton! And somehow it’s alive! I am trying to hold it off! I keep striking it but it is still rising up!"

He sees Roald’s glowing blade. "Your sword! It’s glowing! Help me - maybe you can slay it with your glowing sword!"
Apr 2, 2022 7:48 am
''Another skeleton!?'' Strangely Deoring's words don't frighten Roald as much as he would expect. Is it experience? Or is he already growing accustomed to the strange things that are ''living'' under the temple. Maybe it's the reassuring glow of the sword, knowing there's something out there watching over him.

He shouts out to the captain and everyone that is rushing towards them. But this time in a less panicking tone. ''IT'S A LIVING SKELETON''

'' Ok Deoring, I'll try to hit it, but I can't reach it from here. I'll have to reposition. This also means I will let go of you, so watch your footing and balance.
He lets go if Deoring's shoulder and looks over his own shoulder.
He sees the captain coming over to his right side. ''CAREFUL CAPTAIN, MIND THE TRAPS! USE OUR STEPPING STONES''
Roald takes two steps to the left to get round Deoring. As he sees the skeleton he too starts hacking away trying to hit the moving parts first.
