Descending the Temple Depths

Your sword-edge does very little to the skeleton, but there is a flash of light as you strike --and the sword rekindles its shine, brighter than before-- which rips through from your point of impact and cleanly carves a section off the skull.

Dark plant-matter spills out instead of brains. If the loss of 'brains' bothers the skeleton you can't tell, but the missing section of skull --which would have housed an eye and ear-- definitely hinder its ability to walk straight and follow your position.

This is having an effect. Another few blows like that and --judging from the motor-function deterioration-- this one will cease to be a threat.

Roald is back on his feet just in time to watch Deoring booting the skeleton on its back.
At this point feelings of vengeance start outweighing his nausea. He grips his sword firmly in one hand and leaps forward to aid Deoring
Maybe it's all in his head, but it seems his sword is glowing brighter as he comes closer to his foe. His sword arm rises and above his head, his left hand interlocks with the other around his sword. Roald puts all of his anger and frustration in the attack.
Aiming for the neck of the creature, a mighty blow comes down.

"Brrr", Deoring shivers as he feels an eerie chill shoot up his leg from the skeleton’s chest. His foot is starting to go numb! He could have sworn that he’d broken some of the skeleton’s bones but it’s holding together. And all this gunk on his boot!

Deoring pulls his foot back and stamps his foot and scrapes it on the floor to try to shake off the numbing cold and to scrape off the gunk.

Albert feels the bits of mold fly his way after he hits the monster. He pulls his broom back, causing even more of the green goop to find its way to him. Don't breathe, Albert. Don't breathe! He has to force himself to hold on. As soon as he inhales, he'll be getting into a coughing fit. No doubt about it.

He hesitates for a second, not sure if he should go in for another attack or clean himself off. But then he sees Dirk spring into action, cutting off part of the skeleton's face ... as far as it had one in the first place. It's almost down. I can help Dirk. Lungs, don't fail me now!

With a mental mantra to Raynor echoing inside his head, Albert raises the staff above his head and gets in range of the skeleton to deal it a crushing blow.

With his broomstick raised up high, Albert nears the creature. Just at that moment, the stinky cloud reaches his face and irritates his eyes. The loss of focus causes Albert to breathe in. Toxic spores fly into his airways, causing an unfortunately timed coughing fit. He can't help but drop to his knees as he coughs his lungs out (figuratively) right in front of the skeleton that's now looming over him. He knows he's in a bad spot right now. All he can do is hope that Dirk and Raynor come to his rescue before worse things happen.

When Rook sees the puff of spores, he remembers what happened in the tunnel. Quickly, before the spores can settle, he pulls out the torch and flintsteel he had kept ready. Igniting the torch he threw at the skeletons, trying to tag them before they grew to close

We'll see what happens. Guessing +DEX for speed and accuracy being the key points here, but we can change the roll if you disagree. Hopefully I don't roll like I normally do

- Roald -

Your powerful blow punches through the skeleton's bones, the light from your sword seems to hold whatever force is pulling them back together apart, preventing it from healing and keeping the injury open.

The skeleton opens it mouth and 'screams' in pain, but no sound comes out. You do hear a simultaneous 'buzz' from Dirk's weapon, though.

What do you do?

Roald keeps his weapon in the cavity. ''Quickly Deoring! Finish him off! Go for the skull!''

Deoring, amazed by Roald’s success, shouts, "Way to go, Roald!"

After being egged on by Roald, he shifts slightly to the side to get a better angle, then raises his sword and aims it down on the skeleton’s skull, yelling, "Raynor’s fire will light my way!"

Your blade severs the skull at the base, and it rolls away, the light from Roald's strike flows quickly to fill the gap --sizzling slightly-- and the skeleton ceases to move, loses organisation, and becomes nothing more than a pile of bones.

As you withdraw your sword, the light clings to it for a moment then drips off, disappearing before it reaches the floor. Despite this, your weapon does not maintain the glow, but something nags at the back of your mind, something about Albert's 'staff'.

Is this Raynor 'lighting your way'?
OOC:
If so, you can try to understand what is being 'said', and Roll+WIS?

"Whoa! What was that? Did Raynor bless you with his fire?" Deoring asks Roald.

"Is that why Albert’s broom-staff is glowing, and some of our other weapons? The light seemed to cling to my blade for a second there."

Whatever Albert did about the bones in the temple above --right before everyone ran out clamouring about them moving, and before you all saw evidence that that was a real thing-- infused his weapon with this light which is more than just light (but what would one expect from the light of a god of conquest?).

There is some connection with that staff and the glows from weapons of some of the rest of your party. You have an inkling about why some and not others are glowing, but two things don't add up, maybe Roald can help yuo decipher the mystery?

If --as you suppose-- it is based on which of the party members directly handled Albert's staff --Dirk held the staff during the torch experiment, and Albert himself handed it to Asha to hold while climbing through the window above the roof (though, she still has not realised the undrawn axe at her belt is glowing faintly)-- then: Rook's should be showing something --he retrieved it and handed it to Albert at the bottom the stairs-- and his sling and stones definitely are not glowing; and you can't recall Roald ever handling the staff --but who was paying attention all the time?

Given how much more effective these 'blessed' weapons are at dealing with the undead, it might be worth getting to the bottom of this rather than impotently pounding away.

What do you do?
OOC:
What were you doing during that first encounter with the moving bones? Were you maybe outside avoiding the captain standing guard? Were you there in the background?

Do you have any thoughts to add to Deoring's analysis? And, why do people keep asking you to decipher things for them?

What do you do?

Hearing the strange buzzing coming from his machete, Dirk strangely feels inspired. Alright machete, show me what you can do! Dirk quickly jumps between Albert and the skeleton, and swings at it with his machete!

The skeleton barely manages to stumble out of the way of your blows, but seems to be 'learning' to cope with the diminished capacity and on that one side.

It deflects your machete with the sluggish arm, and simultaneously lashes out with the rusty sword in the opposite hand.

• Where does it hit you?

Rusty Skeleton Sword - (1d6+1)

The rusty blade cuts Dirk's cheek, shaves part of his beard off, and opens a nasty deep gash across his chest. The searing pain causes Dirk to stumble back, but he keeps his balance. Dirk decides to play it safe and defensively now, he holds his ground and carefully watches out for any further attacks from the moldy skeleton, ready to parry them.
OOC:
Not sure if I should roll for this.

Albert, sitting on hands and knees right now, sees Dirk jump in front of him to shield him while he tries to recover from the coughing fit that's crippling him. He keeps his head close to the ground, now that he feels a bit safer with Dirk in front, and tries to slow his breathing, giving his longs a chance to recover. Focus, Albert, focus! Calm breathing will help you.

Calm breathing (using logic; +int) - (2d6+1)

The skeleton seems to look from Albert --incapacitated on the ground-- to Dirk --dancing back and making space-- and steps back as well. It pivots on its foot, stoops, and casually scoops up the side of its head from the floor. Fitting the bone back in place. Then it opens its mouth and roars... gleefully, but silently.

- Dirk -

Despite there being no sound, your machete echoes it back with a angry buzz, reminiscent of how it felt when you struck the bell above.
Apr 12, 2022 3:35 pm
Albert hears the buzz from Dirk's blade. It sounds ominous at first but then, in some way, the buzzing changes into something resembling words. What am I hearing? Albert thinks while he's still coughing like a mad man. He tries to make sense of the sound.

It sounds like... "Roll better"? That doesn't make any sense! Hang on. He listens again a bit more intently. This time he hears it more clearly. "Old letters" Yes, that's it. His mind flashes back to the dream he had of Aunt Mertle, who he used to write letters to.

That voice is right. I've got to power through this. I can't give up. I need to do it for Aunt Mertle!

Deoring speaks up, "Roald, I could do no harm to this skeleton with my sword, but you, with your glowing sword, managed to cleave its neck. And when I struck again, the light from your sword seemed to jump to mine for an instant! This glowing light, it doesn’t just show us the way, it holds some kind of power over these foul things. I know it!"

"This glowing light, if I remember right, started with Albert’s broom, but then seemed to spread. But not to everyone’s weapon, only to some. It seems like, perhaps, those who have held Albert’s broom? When did your sword start to glow? Quick, tell me, what did you do to get it to glow? We should all have glowing weapons, we’re going to need them to fight these, these, skeletons!

OOC:
I got the impression that Asha was the only one who saw what Albert did when his broom first started to glow. Makes sense that Deoring would have been outside avoiding the captain standing guard.
