Chapter 3: Ship people meet woods people

"Even when you're looking for a fight, it's not smart to pick two fights at once. You pick one, and try to overwhelm them quickly before you take on the other." Annika pauses. "Sending a message to the camp is a good idea if we can, but if we can't, they should be alright for now. Let's just try not to get killed."
Apr 22, 2022 2:24 pm
Phann shakily raises his hand I... I would go back to the camp. Maybe I can even organize some reinforcements

And ya gonna get ya'self killed if ya go alone. I'm going with ya! Rada adds, brushing off pieces of wood with her hands.
Saddle up! We're leaving! And don' expect me to carry ya we ass. We'll march at fast pace and won't pause. she adds.
Both pack their few belongings and march off.
The scout the Krenmuth adressed turns to him Greetings Wavewarden. I am Gildas. We spotted the gnolls about half a days travel from here. If they continue at their pace they are here shortly after sunset. I guess they will attack from the northwest.

Carric addresses the group. We are very grateful that you are willing to help us. Let's prepare our defenses. If we show determined resistance we may be able to deter them with little to no bloodshed

Gildas shows you the area outside the grove where the gnolls will probably pass through
OOC:
So the gnolls will probably attack after sunset. You still have time to set up some defenses.

I provided a battlemap so that you can plan your initial position and defence preparations. I included column and row labels so that you can address a grid cell like 'A1'. If you need any more help on the map just tell me
You are in the grove which is off the map in the bottom right corner
The gnolls will come from the upper left corner

Each character has time to prepare one obstacle. These could be:
-Make a spike trap by digging a hole, putting spikes in it and cover the pit up with leaves (Takes up one field on the grid)
-Fell a tree in order to block off some paths or at least make them harder to traverse
-Use a spell to alter the terrain.
-Do something else that takes about 3 hours to finish

If you have any creative ideas don't hesitate to bring them forth ;)

Tharadin spends a few minutes sitting in a corner on his knees, silently speaking to himself. After he finishes his meditations he looks to fell a tree that while block off part of the route into the grove.
OOC:
Mechanically speaking, BE44:BE46 is where he wants to block off. So anyone coming over that raised area is kind of forced to use that southern path to get off. Hoping to reduce the angles of approach kind of thing.
Apr 22, 2022 4:53 pm
Melianne looks like she is about to protest, but holds herself back and only silently watches Phann and Rada leave. It is clear that staying here does not sit well with her at all, and the dancer keeps sneaking glances back to the tree, worry evident in her expression. But the weight of authority of her companions is beyond what she feels able to resist, and Melianne tries to stifle her anxiety for now; she can only hope that her fears are unfounded.

Trying to distract herself from it, Firebird spends the time until sunset alternating between chatting with the locals and trailing after Tharadin and trying to help him in at least some capacity. She has no knowledge of tactical warfare and simply leaves important decisions to others, her only initiative being an offer to scatter her magical lights around the grove to see the opponents' approach.

When she gets a moment, Melianne also asks around for a druid who specializes in herbalism, intending to show them the herb pouch she retrieved after the earlier fight back at camp. It is supposedly used for altering terrain, so even though she doubts it will be good in this fight, she wants to use the occassion of being among druids to learn more about it.
OOC:
No useful preparations that I can think of on Melianne's part, so I'll gladly use her action to add an extra barricade to support Tharadin's plan. Block the northern path, maybe?

I also would like to cast Dancing Lights just before the fight, to illuminate the area we think they are approaching from (as much as distance from where we all will be positioned allows).

"Half a day? Ah, I believed the matter to be more... immediate.." Aravel lowers his bow. Clearly communications were left wanting. He instead pondered the situation at hand. He wasn't a man of battle beyond what any elf was thought, but he could see the merit in blocking the approaches. Thankfully, he had just the tool at hand, a shovel!
"I will make a simple spike trap, over yonder." He indicated the north approach. That would occupy his foes long enough for him to plant a few arrows, or so he hoped. Just in case he plotted an escape route too..
OOC:
Spike trap at AV-24.

Annika has never dug a hole or felled a tree in her life, so instead she spends the time walking the paths, planning out the most likely routes an attacking force would take, and helping the others plan out the best places to put the obstacles accordingly.
OOC:
Treating this as an Investigation check, hoping to make the others' preparations more effective.

Krenmuth is more experienced in ship-to-ship or ship-to-shore fighting than land battles, so he follows the lead of the others. He blocks a path by placing a log (or logs) at AV50.

He has one suggestion, "I can cast a cloud of fog to hide our group or some clan archers in one of the tree copses on the hill, such as the one on the northwest. If the gnolls make it to the top of the hill, we can surprise them from behind. I will stand with those hidden in the cloud and bless them when it's time to attack."
OOC:
Krenmuth is referring to the trees centered around AM28, but he's happy to use the cloud elsewhere if someone has a better idea.

Separate question: Is each square 5' on the map?

Great work and RP everyone! I'm really enjoying it ;)
I'm currently a bit busy but I should be able to resolve your actions and start battle at wednesday. If you want to add anything to your RP, coordinate your efforts more or maybe think about your initial placement, feel free to do so

@rpgventurer Yes, each square is 5'

OOC:
Two more terrain questions: How tall is the raised area and how steep is the slope?
Apr 25, 2022 8:25 pm
OOC:
The tall area rises about 20 feet above the surrounding area. The slope is about 60 degree with lots of loose rocks, moss and ledges. Steep but still climbable.

Annika shows the others a rough map she's made of the area. "I believe this," she says while pointing to the yellow line, "is the most likely approach for an attacking force. It's the clearest path, and the fastest route."

"If they have sufficient numbers for a two-pronged assault, then this," she points to the red line, "seems the best for a flank attack. It maintains good cover from anyone on the hill. During the climb, where they would be most vulnerable, any defenders on the hill would be fully exposed to covering fire from below."
Apr 26, 2022 6:21 am
"But why would they climb the hill at all?.." Melianne leans over Annika's shoulder, peering cluelessly at her plan. "Can't they just go around it? I thought we were going to defend from the hill - higher ground is good for warfare, right? I think I read it somewhere." She sighs, pulling back and twisting her silk scarf. "This is why I am not a general. All these tactics are too confusing."
OOC:
Oops, I misunderstood the plan a bit, barricade where I wanted it would not be good for this one. Guess I'll just reinforce Krenmuth's then? Make it extra hard to traverse? XD
Apr 26, 2022 7:46 am
OOC:
It's actually a good question, but I'm assuming that they can't just go off the edge of the map to get around the hill... some other obstacle is presumably just off-screen. ;)

If we take it as read that they have to get over the hill to gain access to the grove, I imagine they would just try a frontal assault and use their superior numbers to overwhelm the defenders on the hill - that's the yellow path. But they're also led by evil druids who would know the lay of the land, so they'll be expecting resistance on the hill since it's the most defensible chokepoint.

A smaller group could flank around the main path, climb the hill, and then attack any defenders holding off the main force from behind - that's the red path. Climbing in combat is insanely dangerous, so they would try to do it out of sight of the likely vantage points near the yellow attack path and hope to sneak in unnoticed.

The paths as indicated are just artistic license on my part - I'm presuming there's a lot that's not represented on the map (e.g. undergrowth) and that these are what Annika judges as likely given her result of 14 Investigation. She could be completely wrong!

OOC:
I think I just automatically expected the map's main feature to be our defensive position, and the hill looked like it wasn't fully reaching map edge on right side. But I'm not opposing your plan, I was just correcting the barricade situation. :D

....Melianne has 9 INT, she is not even going to try and pretend she understands the theory of it all. XD

OOC:
I definitely agree we should be trying to defend the hill. Just noting that the hill is not the grove itself, but the main obstacle on the way. If there's an easy way around the hill then I think we need a different map. :D
Apr 26, 2022 2:09 pm
OOC:
Agreed. The yellow path was part of what Tharadin assumed, it's why his dead fall was set to block that exit, hoping that they'd end up on top of the hill and be forced to the exit marked in red above.
Apr 27, 2022 6:46 am
OOC:
The red and yellow paths make sense to me too. If Melianne blocks AV50, Krenmuth will instead cut several logs and place them at the top near where the gnolls are likely to ascend on the red and yellow paths. The defenders can roll them down the hill to impede any attack.

What does everyone think of putting a lookout at square AJ26 to warn us of the attackers' approach?

This all sounds good to me!

Are we all going to start on the hill? I was planning on going for Faerie Fire on the gnolls as quickly as possible (its range is 60 ft., 20 ft. cube), but I don't think waiting them somewhere in the forest will be safe for my 13 AC...
Maybe I can be a lookout, cast spell and then pull back? Or will it be safer to wait until they climb and cast then?

OOC:
Hey there. I really love to see you preparing that thoroughly. I've been quite busy today too, so I'll have to postpone the start of the battle to tomorrow.
Because that topic came up: Battle will be limited to the map. So you don't have to worry that the enemy will find a way off map to get to the grove.

Other than that I'm really glad to have you as players and tomorrow I'll start the battle. Feel free to strategize as you like
Apr 28, 2022 8:37 pm
As the sun sets and you finish your preparations Carric and Drusilia join you on top of the hill. They seem to be calm but still tense. We very much appreciate your help. I... Drusilia starts but suddenly an owl swoops down and lands on her shoulder. It nibbles on her ear and then flies off again
I just received the message that the druids of the Green Triskels are near. Our rangers were able to distract a part of their gnolls and so they won't be able to bring their full force to the battle. They still seem to have about 15 gnolls left. Lead be 2 druids. You better get into position they'll be here shortly. she moves to Carric and both seem to do some kind of meditation.
OOC:
So I included all of your preparations into the map. Have a short look wether I did everything correctly. I hope the lighting is alright. I can also lighten the map up a bit if you want to.
Preparation list:
Annika: Due to Annika's investigation of the situation you placed an additional barrier at AV50.
Aravel: Spike Trap at AV24
Krenmuth: Placed a log, ready to roll down the hill at AM23. Needs an action to be rolled down
Melianne: Dancing lights at the approach. You gain advantage on attacks that target creatures within the lights
Tharadin: Log at BE43

Post your positions and roll initiative. The battle is about to begin
