Chapter 3: Ship people meet woods people

Mar 3, 2022 9:32 pm
You victoriously emerge from the temple. Korsak commends you for your performance and says that along with the promised payment he will gather some special items for you.

The next days at the camp are pretty uneventful. You may have just relaxed or engaged with the people at the camp (Or learned insults from them ;) )

Two weeks after the ordeal at the temple Korsak gathers you at his office. While Annika, Krenmuth and Melianne know each other, three people that you don't know are here as well.

Korsak beams at you. He turns to Annika, Krenmuth and Melianne
You have done us a great service at the temple. The city of Bridgeton and I personally thank you a lot. Unfortunately we haven't been able to open the room with the magical barrier that you encountered. We've tried to tunnel through the wall but in the middle of it was a magical barrier as well. Nevertheless I'm sure that we will uncover the mystery of this room and where this palace it that the mummy mentioned.
Scrol sent a note to FlyingSucculent, kadeton, rpgventurer
Korsak turns to Taradin, Aravel and Aderym
And you have done us a great service at taking out the den of monsters to the south. I know that this was no easy task and you still succeeded.
Scrol sent a note to Dramasailor,Khulod,Highlord
I assigned Mr. Sardonius and Mr. Korrin to monitor the situation in the south further. I meanwhile have your payment and a share of the treasures that we found in the temple. he continues. He gives each of you a bag of coins with 3gp inside.
Meanwhile I have a different mission for you. As you may remember I sent a scouting party to establish contacts with the locals. Unfortunately there has been a... misunderstanding and a member of the scouting party is being held captive by one of the tribes here. I ask you to go there and resolve the situation. If necessary you can use force but I'd much prefer that the situation is resolved peacefully.
Korsak leans back in his chair
So your mission is to free the captive and if possible to establish any kind of connection or even an alliance with the tribe. Maybe they can tell you why we have been attacked so often. Do you have any questions? Korsak asks and raises his eyebrows.

The tall elf Aravel looked far more noble then anyone had a right to be in the current locale. Not alone was his clothing utterly pristine, a task most would consider impossible in the current environment, his posture and aloofness befit a princeling. All the while he looked at his surroundings in his favored way; down his nose, whilst making little disdainful "hmm" and "mmph" noises. He certainly was dressed for the environment in his fine leathers that would indeed be suitable for a trek through the wilderness, and the shovel, crowbar and mining pick poking from his fine backpack told anyone the elf was likely here to do some digging through the ruins. Indeed, his comments muttered in the fine elf tongue that some individuals had already 'ransacked' the temple 'without proper respect for historical artifacts' due to a lack of 'profesisonal supervision' indicated that he believed he might have done a far better job of it. His inner voice seemed regrettably vocal. At least these were not Elven ruins, so nothing of true value had been lost by the actions of the 'blundering simians' according to him.

That he was now paired with said perceived primates for a mission of rescue and diplomacy was just insufferable. Still, needs must. The true find of the century, nay, the millenium, might depend on what historical clues might be hidden here. Thus he got to work at the task at hand.
"These ahhh, primitives. What species were they again?" The elf's voice managed to sound both haughty and impatient.
"Is there any indication they might be descendants of the people who built the temple?"
The elf rested his hand on the pommel of his fine rapier whilst looking down his nose at Korsak (the height difference made it a rather easy task). A ferret took the moment to curiously climb out of the elf's backpack and move to the Aravel's shoulders to inspect its surroundings.
Mar 4, 2022 12:51 am
There was something about the elf's voice that set Tharadin on edge. Perhaps it was the soft look, the beardless face, or the words that he had thumped kinfolk on the skull for using. His head gleamed, shaved smooth to reveal an old scar from some large animal raked across his scalp. His long beard, the color of fresh mud, was wound through with beads and cords. A particularly large wooden bear's head figurine sat in roughly the middle of the mass of hair. Unlike Aravel and his fine expedition-suited clothes, Tharadin wore a set of well-abused explorers pants and a thick rough-woven shirt with the sleeves removed. He leaned back against the wall, flint-gray eyes peering out from below his heavy brow. A massive axe with a leather-wrapped handle is leaned against a battered backpack with adventuring supplies strapped to it.

Tha man said tribes. Not primatives. Would have thought you'd learned the difference seein' how they helped with that last bit in the den down south. That mad bear nearly caught us if it weren't for old Thrask and his axe eh? he said in a thick brogue, clearly a subject they've had some interesting words about in the recent past. I know some of the clans out here, may know this 'un, if you know anything about where they've been taken. May be able to convince them to give us some information. he continued, addressing Korask directly.
Mar 4, 2022 3:15 am
Annika scowls at the mention of local tribes. "Please tell me we're not dealing with another damned Frog Emperor."
Mar 4, 2022 10:26 pm
Aderym stood at the back of the room, his arms across his chest as he listened to the conversation. medium-length black that partially covers his ears. A small scar marred the left side of this face. He wore Scale Mail armor, a short sword in its scabbard hung from his belt and a longbow bow slung across his back. "If we're hoping to resolve this peacefully, it might be best to let the one who is most familiar with the tribes in this area do the talking"

"And that would be...?"
Clearly Aravel was more preoccupied with the old stones around him then the matter at hand, seeing as most of his attention at the moment seemed to be on the nearest ancient wall.

Krenmuth stood near Korsak. He is a human with short brown hair, blue eyes, and a serious demeanor. His scale mail is dented but clean, and his shield is adorned with a newly painted image of a grey cloud with three lightning bolts shooting down. "Lord Korsak, you honor us with such a vital mission. I swear by the power that Valkur has granted me, peace is what we will seek. What we find depends on the tribe's actions. Who is the captive?"

Then Krenmuth looks in turn turns to Aderym, Aravel, and Tharadin as he says, "Welcome to the camp. My name is Krenmuth. I apologize for not greeting you sooner, but I have been focused on my clerical studies these past couple of weeks. As Wavewarden to this camp, I can be your spiritual guide both on and off the battlefield."

Melianne lounges comfortably in the chair she's been favoring since the first visit to Corsak's office, watching the three new to her adventurers with keen interest and, as is her way, missing half of what is being said in regards to their next mission. Her silk sash, the one she still refuses to ditch despite its impracticality, is draped on the chair's back, and she plays with its ends as Korsak relies the situation. But her eyes wander away from the camp overseer, instead focusing on the reactions of those gathered.

She scrunches up her nose at the elf's words, finding his attitude rather unpleasant, but her attention quickly shifts when she notices the ferret - the dancer almost squeaks in delight at how adorable it is, her first impression of Aravel warming up a few degrees instantly. She is even more intrigued when the tough-looking warrior speaks up and she notices the bear figurine in his hair; her eyes glint as Melianne makes a mental note to pester him about it later. And as for the third one... he seems hard to read, but judging by his words he's at least a resonable type - which already places him above a good number of camp soldiers (and ancient mummies) in Melianne's mind.

She doesn't interrupt the conversation, content to let people more strategically-minded than herself plan out their mission, but her curiosity wins over when Tharadin mentions his familiarity with the local clans. She leans forward, setting her chin on her interlocked fingers, and addresses the warrior: "I hope your tribal acquaintances weren't of the same kin as the ones we fought here at the camp a week or so earlier, sir. That would be an awkward conversation." Melianne tilts her head slightly. "I'd love to hear more about the local customs later, if you're willing to entertain me with some stories."

They are mostly humans and a few elves as far as we know. We don't know wether they built the ruins. But they weren't inhabitating them when we came here. Korsak begins answering your questions

The tribe in question seems to be one of the more peaceful ones around here. They call themselves the Owl-Claw-Clan and I hope that by establishing contact with them we can broker a peace with the other clans here.
Scrol sent a note to Dramasailor
The captive is a female scout named Rada. She came with the group of survivors from the sunken Jolly Wanderer. It seems that she violated the customs of the tribe and became angry when they tried to reign her in. Nothing that you couldn't solve I guess.

Also I have some assistance for you that may help you during your journey.

Korsak opens a chest and retrieves some items from it. Just as he wants to close it a raven flies in through the open window, grabs a ring from the chest and flies away.
You damned critter! Korsak calls after the fleeing animal.
Nasty little bugger. Nevertheless... I have some items for you. You can take one of those.
He spreads out an assortment of different things on his desk.

After you are done choosing he ushers you out of his office and quickly mentions that you can each get 10 rations from the quartermaster.
You are in front of his office. A ship has just docked and is unloading wares, which means that you can probably buy some items at the market before you leave.
OOC:

Sorry that I took a bit longer for posting. I currently have a nasty cold and am therefore a bit weakened.
Also I made a mistake. You got 30 gp as reward, not 3 gp as I wrote in my previous post. Missed the zero o.O
I'll continue the story after the weekend.

You can visit the market. It is well stocked and it offers all of the classic adventuring gear that you'd expect.
You can buy as much as you can afford. Please refer to this site for the gear and prices
You also get 10 rations each from the quartermaster.

Korsak presents you with the following items to choose from. You can get one of them and after you picked its gone. So its first come, first serve:

Wavewarden. Tharadin says, rolling the unfamiliar term around his tongue. Your tools have seen war, and for that I am happy to have your blessing.

As Melianne calls out the potential awkwardness of him knowing the tribes they fought he chuckles with a rising flush to his cheeks. Aye. Could be. But you still punish a whelp that does wrong, even if you like them. he continues with a steely look before scratching one cheek with a slightly dirt-covered finger. The Owl Claws? Witchy lot. Love their trees, but love their tribe more. Normally won't fight ya, 'less you poke them first. If this Rada ran afoul of their traditions, they won't be likely to give her up easy. Still, couldn't hurt to remind them that not everyone is clan.

When Korsak shows them the treasure trove, his eyes settle on the javelin and the potions. I'd take the javelin, if no one objects. he ends with a grunt as he picks up the weapon.
[ +- ] If anyone objects to the javelin

Annika doesn't seem at all surprised to hear that Rada has caused a diplomatic incident. She looks over the items on display, eventually settling on the Potion of Water Breathing. "Just in case."

Krenmuth says with affection, "The people from the Jolly Wanderer are a feisty lot." He chooses the Potion of Fire Resistance.
Mar 11, 2022 8:33 pm
Aravel rubbed his chin while his eyes wandered to the window, his thoughts cast outside. He waits for others to make their pick, not so much out of politeness but rather seeming disinterest. Finally he picks up the scroll of object location, an item the others seemingly show no interest in but he believes he might find of use rather shortly.

---

Once outside he excuses himself and walks a bit, unfurling the scroll. He casts the spell off of it, naming the ring he just witnessed to be whisked away by the feathered thief as the object he wishes to locate.

Aravel can sense that the ring is somewhere behind Korsak's office. He finally finds the ring being held by a raven that is sitting atop a small wild apple tree. He can drive it off and it drops the ring. The ring clearly has some magical properties. He should be able to find out what is up with the ring during his next rest.
You all collect your belongings and take off to the direction of the camp where Rada is held captive.
The quartermaster not only provided you with 10 rations each but also with a tent for everyone and gives you directions to the camp.
It is about two days of travel time to the north, near the area where the swamp and the surrounding forest merge into each other.
The first part of the journey is pretty uneventful. At dusk you pitch your tents and light a camp fire.
As you sit around the fire and possibly discuss your next steps you can hear loud grunts coming at you. At first glance you can't see anything.
What do you want to do?
OOC:
Melianne and Highlord haven't chosen their items until now. You can do so retroactively if you want to.

Mar 17, 2022 6:05 am
Krenmuth stands and faces the direction of the grunts. He casts a Light cantrip on his warhammer's head and holds it high. then calls out, "We come in peace!"
Mar 17, 2022 7:22 am
Shielding her eyes from Krenmuth's glowing hammer, Annika tries to get a better look at whatever might be out there.

Krenmuth's bright Warhammer reveals the sillouette of a group of wild boars slowly approaching the camp. Constantly smelling the ground they trudge towards you
Annika can see that it consists of 2 adult and 6 adolescent ones
Mar 17, 2022 2:29 pm
Tharadin sniffs the air briefly before the warhammer flares into brightness. Wild boar. If they decide we need to fight, watch for their tusks. he says, hand idly brushing the side of his abdomen as his other hand reaches slowly for his axe. He readies himself to spring into action if the boar decide to charge.

OOC:
Sorry about not responding for a while.
Also I'm a horrible hoarder, so consumables are never getting used by me. But I think I'll take the potion of healing, just in case? XD
Melianne is sitting cross-legged by the fire, having been busying herself by practicing playing card tricks for the last half an hour. She looks up at her companions' words, glancing towards the boars - or rather, where she thinks the boars are; it's not the best angle to actually see them from where she is, - and offers: "Perhaps we can scare them away? I'd rather not pick fights with the wildlife. We have fire and magic..." She lifts her horn from her belt. "Do you suppose they'll be afraid of noise, sir Tharadin? Or perhaps light?" She clicks her fingers, a small light dancing above them.
Mar 21, 2022 9:49 pm
While you are discussing, the boars reach the edge of your camp. The two adult boars stand in the front while the six adolescent ones follow them in close proximity.
They don't seem to be particularly aggressive - in fact they seem to ignore you.
The mother(?)-boar sniffs the air and then trudges off towards your backpacks. The other boars follow suit.
Mar 21, 2022 11:43 pm
Tharadin moves carefully, holding a finger up in response to Melianne's question. Keeping his axe close, he reaches one hand out towards the nearest boar, palm up, hoping if he can brush their hide.

If only I had a few extra minutes to let my mind free, I could speak to them. he thinks as he inches closer.

Shhhhh shhh. Good boar. Nothin' in those packs for you. he says, using a lighter voice than you'd expect as he tries to politely shoo them away.

Animal Handling (-3 for a straight nature check) - (1d20+3)

(15) + 3 = 18

Mar 22, 2022 7:51 pm
The seeking of the magic of the scroll had swiftly delivered Aravel to the lost ring. Looking up to the thieving bird aspiring to join the ranks of the magpies, he huffed and crossed his arms. Visible to only his own eyes a spectral hand hovered up behind the bird, only to swiftly remove its prize from it's beak. As it started it flew off in a hurry as Aravel smugly let his new acquisition come down to rest in the palm of his hand. Unless he missed his guess (he rarely did), his earlier deduction was correct; the chest the ring came from mostly contained magical trinkets of all sorts and sizes, and this ring was no exception. Most excellent! Magical rings were no trifle after all. And whatever guilt Aravel might feel at not swiftly returning the object to what some might consider the rightful owner was swiftly displaced by the knowledge that the thing would be wasted being left in a chest, rather then employed by his esoteric patronage. Besides, should he have no more need of it, he could always return it. Later.

The elf carefully stored away his new prize for later consideration. After all, his newfound companions were in some sort of rush, as their shortlived kind often was. He had best get to it.

----------------

Boars. Really now. Aravel had expected some dwarves for all the grunting so close to the ground, but it was a group of visitors even less concerned with personal hygiene. Oh well. At least some animals were of little immediate concerns. Apart from the fact boars tended to have the most surly of demeanors. Another thing in common with dwarves, come to think of it. Really, it was no surprise that some of the beardly folk chose to ride such animals into battle. Oh, and what's this? The local dwarf is already having a chat with the visitors. Oh, now that was just too rich. But better let the short one handle this. He seemed rather apt at it. After all, Aravel preferred to wisely keep his distance. There was no need to get his clothing dirty by the sudden charge of such a beast, oh no.
Mar 23, 2022 7:27 am
Melianne watches with apt attention as Tharadin approaches the boars, leaning a bit so she can observe the happenings from a better angle and almost burning herself in the process - not that she seems afraid of the fire licking her skin at all. She watches in awe when the barbarian gets closer to the animals, and whispers in a loud stage whisper: "May I pet them too?.."
OOC:
Oh, is Tharadin a dwarf? I couldn't find actual reference to that on the forum, but it would be nice to know for references' sake!

Feeling slightly foolish for calling out to animals, Krenmuth stays in place but keeps his illuminating warhammer high and ready. No need to antagonize them, he thinks. The cleric waits for a response to Tharadin's gesture, only turning if he needs to keep his shield facing the lead boar.
Mar 23, 2022 9:02 pm
One of the larger boars approaches Tharadin and sniffs his hand. It is big, muscular and has two tusks about as long as Tharadin's hand is wide. Thick brown bristles cover its body. It licks his fingers and even allows him to give it some gentle pats.

The other five boars meanwhile are unimpressed by you and continue into the camp.

While Tharadin is occupied, two of the smaller boars circle him and begin to sniff and nibble at his backpack

Annika, Aravel and Melianne's backpacks are also visited by a boar each, with Aravel's belongings having the doubtful honor of getting visited by the biggest one.
OOC:
I'm assuming that you put down your backpacks for resting. If you decide to have your backpack at your body or if you pick it up, the boars will still try to reach it by climbing you.

To summarize: Tharadin currently occupies one of the two large boars, the second one is at Aravel's backpack.
Two small ones are nibbling at Tharadin's backpack, while Melianne and Annika's belongings are visited by the other two

Who's packs? - (5d5)

Mar 23, 2022 11:23 pm
Melianne watches as the boars move into their camp - completely fearlessly, if she might add, - and head directly for the backpacks. Good on them for knowing their target and going straight for it. "Tharadin, are all of the local boars this bold, or are we lucky to have tun into the bravest ones in the entire area?" Firebird is eraptured by the odd occurence and almost misses the fact that one of the animals decides to pick her own pack as a nibbling toy.

Once she does notice, the dancer reaches over to try and pull her own pack closer to herself, gently shooing away the tusked intruder. "Now, dear, there is nothing for you to eat in this pocket unless you like chewing on playing cards, tinder and possibly magical herbs. I suppose I can share some rations if you're hungry, but- Hey now, there is no need to try to climb me!" Melianne squeaks as the boar tries to follow the pack. "Gentlemen, I'm being crushed by the bovine menace, help please! How do I scare him away, Thar?!"

Tharadin whips his head around at Melianne's cry. If they are this bold, they aren't often challenged. Fifty fifty chance they run away if we holler. They may just attack. He digs into a pouch on his belt, pulling out a single ration pack he kept there instead of his bag. He waved it under the beast's nose. Yaaaaah. Come get it piggies! the ruddy dwarf says, trying to get the attention of the pack before he takes a few steps away, chucking the food away from the camp.

Tharadin is trying to get them interested in his one ration and getting them focused on that for the moment. If they go for it, he'll be ready for them to return, otherwise he'll be doing some attacky things next.

Tharadin throws his ration just outside the area where the fire illuminates the surroundings. The big boar that he calmed down runs away from him and chases the package into the dark.
Aravel successfully manages to drive away the boar from his pack, while the threat of Annika works as well. Melianne is still bothered by her 'adversary' but Krenmuth comes to the 'rescue' as he throws three ration packs around. Unfortunately his aim is way off and he just disperses them around the camp.
One of them hits Melianne in the face and drops down in front of her feet. While this may hurt a bit at least her wild menacing 'friend' leaves her alone and begins to eat from the ration pack.
The remaining four boars are immediately attracted to the other two rations. They stop bothering you and begin to eat the dried meat, bread and cheese that are contained within the packs.
OOC:
Apparently the boars are just hungry. Tharadin sacrificed one ration to send a boar away, the others are still in your camp but instead of bothering you they are feasting on the three packages that Krenmuth tossed around.
So what do you want to do?
Attack them while they are distracted? You'd gain a free round of attacks
Toss more rations and get rid of them this way? You'd avoid a fight.
Feed them, let them be and hope that they can behave?
Do something else?
The choice is up to you

Melianne yelps and flails around as she catches a stray ration to her face, but thankfully the boar at least seems more prepared and immediately moves on to munching upon the provided food. The dancer rubs her nose with a wince, then pulls her belongings closer before the animals decided they wish for more. The accidental collision doesn't discourage her from watching the boar however, as the woman is too curious about the wildlife to dwell on the fact that their tusks are notably sharp and dangerous.

"You can speak with them?" She glances at the dwarf, her expression lighting up with enthusiasm. "That sounds lovely! You can ask them about the area, right? Do you need to prepare anything for it? Here, let me help you distract them!" She scrambles to search through her backpack. "I mostly packed nuts and vegetables, so they'll probably enjoy these ones... Now that she is completely sure of their peacefulness, Melianne delights in feeding the boars, offering them bits and pieces of her rations - mostly vegetables, nuts and cheese. She even manages to pet each of them, the boars offering no objections.

"Aww, aren't they cute?" The dancer extracts herself from a circle of snacking bovines and playfully elbows Aravel, who happens to be the nearest person. "You should try to pet them too! Or are you not one for animals, elf friend? ...Although, you do have a ferret, don't you?"

You all got 10 rations back at the camp

Krenmuth threw 6 rations
Melianne didn't specify exactly how many so we'll just say 2 rations if that's okay
Tharadin fed the boars 3 rations in total

They still demand 4 more and then will peacefully trot off. So who want to be feed them the rest?
The tribal village is one days of travel away so you will just need 1 portion of rations for the travel time. In total you shouldn't come into too much trouble foodwise if you share a bit amongst yourself. Maybe you can even restock at the village

Annika rolls her eyes. "I strongly doubt that bribing local wildlife was what the camp quartermaster had in mind when issuing these rations. Perhaps on the way back we should have a boar hunt and the camp can have a feast." Nevertheless, she hands over two of her rations.
Mar 31, 2022 1:52 pm
"Forage for food!? Forage!?" Aravel replied with an offended tone.
"Not all of us are accustomed to the taste of cave moss and tree bark!"
Mar 31, 2022 8:29 pm
"Aravel, the wilderness is not known for its fine dining opportunities. I would think a learned soul such as yourself would be aware of that." Krenmuth contributes two more days of rations. "Be thankful that ship's gruel is not your only option. That's one thing I don't miss about sailing."
OOC:
@Scrol, Krenmuth started the game with 10 days rations. Would they still be good at this point?

By the way, I also overlooked the avatar/sword combination until you mentioned it.

Aravel haughtily waved away the remark.
"I am well aware, thank you very much. Hence I am unwilling to part with my actual food to appease some swine. Perhaps you would care to explain this to the dwarf, hmm?"

With the boar's appetite satisfied they slowly trot away. One of the small boars rubs up against Melianne's leg before leaving and the big one licks Tharadin's hand.

You can hear their grunting slowly fade away as they disappear in the darkness.
Other than that your night is pretty unremarkable...

The next morning dawns. Small ice crystals have formed along the ropes of your tents and the grass is covered with rime. You can clearly feel that winter is coming.
You pack your things and proceed towards the location of the tribe.

At noon the ice has melted again and you approach the edge of the forest. Most of the trees seem to be firs, larches and spruces.
Just before you reach the edge of the forest you see a cove consisting of birch trees. Most of them are about 30 feet/10 m high but in the center of the cove is a huge birch. It seems to consist of four birches that grip into each other in a spiral form and reach a height of about 100 feet / 30 m.

Just as you approach the cove a wolf comes storming at you. Just as you get your hands at the grips of your weapons the wolf jumps, dissolves into a black mass and reforms into a robed man.
He is tall and clearly has elven features. Maybe he's a half-elf. He's wearing a dark green robe with a hood. A scimitar is dangling from a belt that is holding his robe together.
Without the slighest sign of distress or surprise and says I assume you come from your settlement at the river and are here to visit your companions? You can certainly do so but please respect the cove and its inhabitants. Violence will not be tolerated in a calm yet firm voice.

OOC:
Sorry, got a bit caught up in things! I deducted 2 rations for the boars and 1 for travel, still have 12 left (5 of them are like Krenmuth's, from the start). So I can share if anyone needs. :D
Melianne actually claps excitedly at the man's dramatic transformation, which causes her silks to crackle a bit - the ice crusting them breaking away. In hindsight, she really should've picked clothes more practical for a journey on the cusp of winter, but she wasn't expecting travelling; and for energetic dancing, there was no need to warm herself up with anything but her torches... In other words, she is cold, but the new acquiantance with shapeshifting nature is just the right kind of entertainment to distract her from it.

"My, hello, darling!" She waves at the man and squeezes between Krenmuth and Annika to step closer. "We are indeed here for a visit - but please, would you elaborate on the rules of this cove?" She bats her eyelashes at him. "We wouldn't want to accidentally commit a faux de pas! Perhaps you can even direct us to our friends?"

The rules are that you respect the cove, don't do any damage here especially to the trees and stay peaceful in your deeda as well as in your... the man replies but is suddenly interrupted from a stream of insults from inside the cove
I don' give a flyin' crap 'bout yar stupid tree. It trapped me and I can free myself if... Phan! Ya coward hand me the sword. Imma do it myself you slimey, spineless slug...

The half-elf looks back and you can see slight signs of dismay in his facial impression. ...words he completes the sentence
I think you can go see your friend. Maybe she will calm down at your sight

He turns around, beckons you to follow him and leads you into the cove, towards the tall, central tree.
The branches of the birches in the cove are weaved into each other and form a sort of roof above you, which is protective on one side but still has enough holes to let sunlight in. In the middle, where the big tree stands the roof rises up like a giant tent made out of branches.
I strange scene unfolds. A human woman in leather armor is held inside a wooden cage that appears to be formed out of branches directly growing out of the central tree. She's fuming and cursing and striding around in the cage.
An elven man sits in front of her and tries to calm her down by citing famous people who've been in similiar predicaments
Melianne and Annika will know them from the Jolly Wanderer, the boat that brought them here. It's Rada and Phann!

Five people in green robes are in the center. While two of them, an elven woman and a human man watch the scene in a bewildered manner the rest of them seem to be tending to their tasks, like weaving baskets and sorting berries.
Apr 5, 2022 1:34 am
Tharadin breathes a sigh of relief and slight exasperation at the barrage of language. Gods. It's a wonder you lot haven't just chucked her into the river. he mutters to the half-elf when they get into the cove. I can't apologize for that one, but you have the patience of a stone, not a bear. he finishes with a grin.
Apr 5, 2022 2:02 pm
Melianne quickly approaches the cage, heedless of the folk gathered around it. "Phann, Rada, are you two alright?" She leans forward towards the branches, trying to examine her fellow castaways behind them. "And what exactly did you do to end up here, friends? I hope there were no spontaneous coups to replace a local emperor this time, were there?"
Apr 5, 2022 3:50 pm
Aravel just suffers along. He deduces these locals to be some form of druidic sect, with the shape changing and woodworking and all. They hold little anthropological interest to him but he does consider his fellow elves to be of some interest; their longevity might give them insight into the local history that isn't diluted across countless generations such as among the short-lived races. As the situation with the prisoners seems well in hand he approaches the local elven onlookers to make some inquiries in his native tongue.

"Hail and well met, honored hosts and people of these lands. I am Aravel, son of Althuel, and I came looking for the ancient ruins of an elven palace I deduced must be somewhere in these lands. Would you happen to know of such a place?"
Apr 6, 2022 6:43 am
Tensions were high the last time Krenmuth saw Rada and Phann. I don't think seeing me will calm her down, he thinks. Instead, he stays by the half-elf and says to him, "The highest greetings, sir. My name is Krenmuth. I am a priest of Valkur and Wavewarden to the camp. I assure you our mission is peaceful."

"I can clearly see our wanderers are safe and well. Thank you for that."

Annika follows along with Melianne, wearing a "What have you gotten yourselves into this time?" scowl.
Apr 6, 2022 8:12 pm
My name is Carric and you are amongst the druids of the Owl-Claw-Clan the half-elf that greeted you replies to Krenmuth's introduction
A wavewarden you say? So what happened to one of your ships must have really filled you with sorrow. It really is deplorable that some clans seem to see destructive tactics as their only option
As Tharadin gives his remarks he answers to him She definitely is.... a different guest than what we are used to of course... but the old tree chose to embrace her and it knows best. So we accommodate her as friendly as we can.
Rada and Phann turn to Melianne and Annika. Phann enthusiastically greets them.
Great that you are here! We sent back word that we are in a bit of trouble and it seems that Korsak sent someone already trained in negotiations! Glad to see you! The locals have been nice to us but it has been difficult to stay calm under these circumstances. Rada isn't used to be that... confined, I dare say?

Confined...? To t' nine hells with you! Confined! Rada yells and snorts I'm a friggin' prisoner he'e. Ya' know. At first they we're all friendly' dandy. Gave us this root brew, some kind of beer. Tasted good and so I drank a lot of it. And ya' know: What comes in must come out again. Wanted to take a leak behind this ol' tree here and suddenly it grabbed me! Made this cage!
I wanted to cut the branches BUT THIS IS THEIR FRIGGIN' HOLY TREE THAT I MUST NOT HURT AND SO I HAVE TO STAY HERE 'TIL IT LET'S ME GO!!!

The last words are screamed out by her and Phann gives her a pitiful look.
The druids were so nice to provide us with anything we need but we are not allowed to cut the branches he says in a low voice.
The druid that Aravel talked to turns to him. Even though she looks rather young Aravel can tell that she is at least 300 years old, dressed into the same robes as the other druids with streaks of grey in her long brown hair. A woven leather band keeps her hair out of her face.
She replies in elvish too
Well met! My name is Drusilia, offspring of the Aloro lineage. Elven ruins you say... My father always warned me to not venture near them. Tales of... let's say disconcerting tales.
What you seek is where you came from. You must know... so called civilized folks tend to see the value of the land in a way that tends to their civilized needs. So they often settle in the same place.
The people of your camp see value in the place they are in now and so have many people before. Many cycles of founding, prospering and ruin. But the last cycle was different. It... disturbed the land there. I didn't experience it and neither did my father. But the tales about it live on.
Beneath your camp are ruins and under those are more ruins. If it is elven ruins you seek, they will be there.
Apr 7, 2022 7:23 am
"This all begs the question of who we're here to negotiate with. The druids seem almost as bemused as you that the tree has you captive, so... are we to bargain with the tree?" Annika shakes her head. "Ridiculous. At least you're not in imminent danger, and the druids don't seem hostile, so there's a chance we can resolve all this peacefully and walk away as friends. But not," she glares at Rada, "if you keep kicking up a fuss. So while we figure this out, stay put and pipe down."
Apr 8, 2022 8:58 pm
Drusilia's answer fascinated Aravel and he paid great attention to her for her words seemed honest and plausible. The short-lived races would use the foundations of his kind to build their ramshackle constructions on. But to go digging in these wet surroundings to find those submerged ruins would prove quite the undertaking.. Well, at least he knew where to begin.
"I see! I had looked at the local ruin there, but it was not made by any ancestor of ours. But to go look even deeper... well, needs must, I suppose."

But Drusilia's words struck another chord, the song of a great tragedy. That was also in the legends. A great calamity of some sort. It was fitting. What else might bring about an end to an elven city? A disaster that would make the land uninhabitable?
"One would not make a city in these wet lands. Am I correct in assuming they were not always so?"
Apr 12, 2022 6:03 pm
You can clearly see that Rada wants to respond something snappy to Annika but reconsiders. She sits down with her back against the tree and her arms folded in front off her chest. She reminds Annika off a small child that has just been scolded.
The druid said something about that the tree has to let her free on its own Phann whispers to Annika. Whatever that means...
Drusilia gives a few approving nods as Aravel makes his conclusions
Indeed... There are things in these lands, that are foreign... like a splinter in your foot. And I don't mean you and the other ship people. You may have little consideration for nature but nevertheless you are part of this region, these lands... its spirit vibes within you... I can't tell you too much but there are places here where mother nature is... absent...
Carric gives Tharadin a clap on the shoulder. You all seem tired from your journey. Maybe you want some root brew? We make it from herbs and mashed up roots. Before you can respond he walks deeper into the cove. After a few minutes he comes back with a hollowed out tree trunk in his hands.
He places it on the ground and you can see a greenish liquid sloshing inside it.
Carric hands you pieces of bark that are shaped like giant spoons.
Your friend over there liked it so much that old Father Tree embraced her. Carric remarks in an oddly cheerful way, dips his bark into the liquid and then drinks from it.
Apr 12, 2022 9:53 pm
Tharadin smiles at the offer and takes the piece of bark, dipping a scoop of the liquid out, bringing it to his lips to sip it.
Apr 14, 2022 6:55 pm
"Thank you," Krenmuth says. He takes the "spoon" and raises it above his head. "As do the trees that grow in the forest between the beach and here, may the friendships of our two communities grow from this day forward." The cleric lowers the bark into the liquid, smells it, then sips slowly.
OOC:
Does the liquid have a familiar smell?

Never one to let emotions or superstitions get in the way of actual factual research, Aravel took Drusilia's rendering of local spiritual energies with a healthy dose of nuance. He did not doubt that there indeed was something wrong locally (druids, while an odd bunch, undeniably had a sense for these things), but there need not be a spiritual tie. No, the simple fact that necromancy was practiced at the ruins might already be hint enough that the actual malady that afflicted the region might not be spiritual in nature but could instead have an arcane source, be it created willfully or unleashed by accident. The very hypothesis that the ancient civilization met its doom in a magical calamity of its own making made his scholarly senses tingle with excitement. To uncover the source of a civilization's collapse, imagine!

Noticing that he was actually looking rather inwardly focused whilst in public he recovered himself.
"Erhm. Uncovering the source of these local maladies might coincide with uncovering the history of this region, as is my current goal. Should I find a connection I will be sure to inform you. Once my research is done I wouldn't mind if you bring this place closer to its original state. It could do with fewer bogs and biting insects.."

After all, why not be the hero of the local elven community and the academic world?..

Melianne listens attentively to the story Rada relays to her and Annika - and by extension the entire clearing, as she is quite vocal in her disapproval of local sentient flora. And from what she gathers, the solution seems to be more or less simple, and exactly what Annika just proposed.

"Rada, dear, have you considered that this lovely tree might have disapproved of your choice of a place to answer your... natural urges?" The dancer can't help but giggle a little, looking up at the tree branches above. It is a very magnificent tree. "I imagine it could take offence to such treatment. Mayhaps you should simply... apologize to it?"
Apr 18, 2022 12:14 am
Well said Carric responds to Krenmuth's toast and takes a sip from his drink. The liquid smells like moss and wild herbs. The tast though is bit different, remarkably similiar to ale...

Drusilia bows her head and smiles in response to Aravel's promise

Rada furrows her brow in response to Melianne's proposal Apologize? To a tree? Really? Hrmph... Whatever... Maybe it helps
She turns to the tree and says Oy, Mr Tree. I'm really sorry that I took a wee behind ya. I just had to let go but I should've left the cove for my.... business. I won't do it again
Rada looks at the tree expectantly. Nothing happens...
She turns to Melianne again Well. Didn't work but it....
Rada is interruped by what seems to be a gust of wind rushing through the leaves of the tree. The rustling of the leaves nearly sounds like... whispering.

Surely its just your imagination playing a trick on you... But no... The tree... it wants to talk to you...
Somehow you feel the urge to go to the tree and touch it... It doesn't feel like you are forced to do this but it seems to be a such a good idea...
OOC:
You all are drawn to the big tree in the center of the cove. You can just let it happen or try to resist. If you choose the latter do a DC13 WIS saving throw. On a success you can choose to stay where you are. Aravel has advantage on this saving throw.
Apr 18, 2022 8:45 am
Annika is very familiar with whispering voices on the wind, and is happy to go along with them.
Apr 18, 2022 6:49 pm
"Oh, Mister Tree is answering after all!" Melianne claps her hands and then extends one, pressing her palm against the tree's bark. "Is it a usual way of communication here, I wonder... They did say you were special for getting its attention, Rada - maybe we are making history here!"
Apr 18, 2022 6:56 pm
Aravel heard the tree's call. It seemed very familiar in a sentimental way. All the more reason to ignore it, such nature spirits generally were mostly concerned with roots and leaves and the latest invasion of beavers. And yet, what if it knew something? That tree certainly was old. And before he knew it Aravel was headed towards the call..

Tharadin hears the call in his mind. Urging him forward. Never really much cared for people intruding on his thinking time, this felt worse. But as always happened when he tried thinking too hard, he missed the point. His feet moved him to the tree and his hand was on the rough surface before he could mount a good resistance.

Rada and Phann are standing beside the tree, both looking confused and the former surrounded by dried up branches that comprised her cage.

Our friends here... Carric says and points at the new arrivals ...were on their way back here when they met a large group of gnolls, lead by druids from the Green Triskel Clan.
We are not really friends but until now there were hardly any hostilities. They told them that they know that we harbor some of the ship people. They see you as enemies and they demanded that we join their fight against you. They also demanded that we extradite you to them. When we declined they told the scouting party that we are either for them or they see us as allies of the ship people.

Drusilia interjects And this probably means that they will attack us first and then your camp. We won't hold any ill will towards you if you decide to leave and prepare your defences. We will defend the old tree until our last breath though.

Apr 21, 2022 9:51 pm
After blinking away the grisly and deeply disturbing vision Aravel became aware of the situation. Gnolls!? Attack!? How dreadful! He wanted nothing to do with this. But if these animals were going to attack wherever he went he would not be able to do his work in peace. And if he had to confront those beasts, well, then it better be with his wood-dwelling kin in their favored terrain. These druids were hardly powerless after all.
"I... shall lend my bow to the defense." Aravel offered magnanimously, before pulling out a rather modern modular bow which he quickly assembled out of three pieces, after which he deftly strung it.
Apr 22, 2022 3:35 am
Melianne is disoriented as she shakes off the vision, her hand going to her lips to stifle a small gasp of fear. It hardly helps that now there are way more people surrounding them, bearing news of a potential attack - but even with these new circumstances in place, Firebird has trouble focusing on anything else except a horrible premonition shown by the tree. When magical flora shows a magical daydream, surely there is a meaning to it... And what meaning she can decipher does not bode well.

While others talk, the dancer quietly looks around, both to try and regain her composure and to see if there is anything vaguely resembling petals around her. But of course there are petals somewhere, this is a forest; it can't be this simple. She clasps her silk scarf, thoughts jumbled, and waits for a pause in conversation before addressing Carric and her companions: "I believe we have to warn our friends back at camp." Her tone is anxious, and she can't exactly hide her worry. "But if we leave in a manner that the gnolls will notice, maybe we will be able to lure them away from your settlement?" Melianne glances at her companions. "If we are their priority, then they'll follow us... right?"

Krenmuth says to Melianne, "The only guarantee with gnolls is their viciousness. I prefer to make a stand here where we can better protect this sacred grove. I hope we have time to set up defenses."

Then he calls to the newcomers, "Good day, scouts! I am Wavewarden Krenmuth from the camp. How far away are the gnolls?"
Apr 22, 2022 4:56 am
"Yes, but our friends!" Melianne looks at Krenmuth almost pleadingly. "What if it is a distraction? I- I think the tree was trying to say something to me? If these gnolls are coming for us, then they knew that we are here, somehow. Maybe this is all a plan, and they are actually planning two attacks..." She turns to Callic. "Even when you're looking for a fight, it's not smart to pick two fights at once. You pick one, and try to overwhelm them quickly before you take on the other." Annika pauses. "Sending a message to the camp is a good idea if we can, but if we can't, they should be alright for now. Let's just try not to get killed."
Apr 22, 2022 2:24 pm
Phann shakily raises his hand I... I would go back to the camp. Maybe I can even organize some reinforcements

And ya gonna get ya'self killed if ya go alone. I'm going with ya! Rada adds, brushing off pieces of wood with her hands.
Saddle up! We're leaving! And don' expect me to carry ya we ass. We'll march at fast pace and won't pause. she adds.
Both pack their few belongings and march off.
The scout the Krenmuth adressed turns to him Greetings Wavewarden. I am Gildas. We spotted the gnolls about half a days travel from here. If they continue at their pace they are here shortly after sunset. I guess they will attack from the northwest.

Carric addresses the group. We are very grateful that you are willing to help us. Let's prepare our defenses. If we show determined resistance we may be able to deter them with little to no bloodshed

Gildas shows you the area outside the grove where the gnolls will probably pass through
OOC:
So the gnolls will probably attack after sunset. You still have time to set up some defenses.

I provided a battlemap so that you can plan your initial position and defence preparations. I included column and row labels so that you can address a grid cell like 'A1'. If you need any more help on the map just tell me
You are in the grove which is off the map in the bottom right corner
The gnolls will come from the upper left corner

Each character has time to prepare one obstacle. These could be:
-Make a spike trap by digging a hole, putting spikes in it and cover the pit up with leaves (Takes up one field on the grid)
-Fell a tree in order to block off some paths or at least make them harder to traverse
-Use a spell to alter the terrain.
-Do something else that takes about 3 hours to finish

If you have any creative ideas don't hesitate to bring them forth ;)

Tharadin spends a few minutes sitting in a corner on his knees, silently speaking to himself. After he finishes his meditations he looks to fell a tree that while block off part of the route into the grove.
OOC:
Mechanically speaking, BE44:BE46 is where he wants to block off. So anyone coming over that raised area is kind of forced to use that southern path to get off. Hoping to reduce the angles of approach kind of thing.
Apr 22, 2022 4:53 pm
Melianne looks like she is about to protest, but holds herself back and only silently watches Phann and Rada leave. It is clear that staying here does not sit well with her at all, and the dancer keeps sneaking glances back to the tree, worry evident in her expression. But the weight of authority of her companions is beyond what she feels able to resist, and Melianne tries to stifle her anxiety for now; she can only hope that her fears are unfounded.

Trying to distract herself from it, Firebird spends the time until sunset alternating between chatting with the locals and trailing after Tharadin and trying to help him in at least some capacity. She has no knowledge of tactical warfare and simply leaves important decisions to others, her only initiative being an offer to scatter her magical lights around the grove to see the opponents' approach.

When she gets a moment, Melianne also asks around for a druid who specializes in herbalism, intending to show them the herb pouch she retrieved after the earlier fight back at camp. It is supposedly used for altering terrain, so even though she doubts it will be good in this fight, she wants to use the occassion of being among druids to learn more about it.
OOC:
No useful preparations that I can think of on Melianne's part, so I'll gladly use her action to add an extra barricade to support Tharadin's plan. Block the northern path, maybe?

I also would like to cast Dancing Lights just before the fight, to illuminate the area we think they are approaching from (as much as distance from where we all will be positioned allows).

"Half a day? Ah, I believed the matter to be more... immediate.." Aravel lowers his bow. Clearly communications were left wanting. He instead pondered the situation at hand. He wasn't a man of battle beyond what any elf was thought, but he could see the merit in blocking the approaches. Thankfully, he had just the tool at hand, a shovel!
"I will make a simple spike trap, over yonder." He indicated the north approach. That would occupy his foes long enough for him to plant a few arrows, or so he hoped. Just in case he plotted an escape route too..
OOC:

Krenmuth is more experienced in ship-to-ship or ship-to-shore fighting than land battles, so he follows the lead of the others. He blocks a path by placing a log (or logs) at AV50.

He has one suggestion, "I can cast a cloud of fog to hide our group or some clan archers in one of the tree copses on the hill, such as the one on the northwest. If the gnolls make it to the top of the hill, we can surprise them from behind. I will stand with those hidden in the cloud and bless them when it's time to attack."
OOC:
Krenmuth is referring to the trees centered around AM28, but he's happy to use the cloud elsewhere if someone has a better idea.

Separate question: Is each square 5' on the map?

I'm currently a bit busy but I should be able to resolve your actions and start battle at wednesday. If you want to add anything to your RP, coordinate your efforts more or maybe think about your initial placement, feel free to do so

@rpgventurer Yes, each square is 5'

Two more terrain questions: How tall is the raised area and how steep is the slope?
Apr 25, 2022 8:25 pm
OOC:
The tall area rises about 20 feet above the surrounding area. The slope is about 60 degree with lots of loose rocks, moss and ledges. Steep but still climbable.

Annika shows the others a rough map she's made of the area. "I believe this," she says while pointing to the yellow line, "is the most likely approach for an attacking force. It's the clearest path, and the fastest route."

"If they have sufficient numbers for a two-pronged assault, then this," she points to the red line, "seems the best for a flank attack. It maintains good cover from anyone on the hill. During the climb, where they would be most vulnerable, any defenders on the hill would be fully exposed to covering fire from below."
Apr 26, 2022 6:21 am
"But why would they climb the hill at all?.." Melianne leans over Annika's shoulder, peering cluelessly at her plan. "Can't they just go around it? I thought we were going to defend from the hill - higher ground is good for warfare, right? I think I read it somewhere." She sighs, pulling back and twisting her silk scarf. "This is why I am not a general. All these tactics are too confusing."
OOC:
Oops, I misunderstood the plan a bit, barricade where I wanted it would not be good for this one. Guess I'll just reinforce Krenmuth's then? Make it extra hard to traverse? XD
Apr 26, 2022 7:46 am
OOC:
It's actually a good question, but I'm assuming that they can't just go off the edge of the map to get around the hill... some other obstacle is presumably just off-screen. ;)

If we take it as read that they have to get over the hill to gain access to the grove, I imagine they would just try a frontal assault and use their superior numbers to overwhelm the defenders on the hill - that's the yellow path. But they're also led by evil druids who would know the lay of the land, so they'll be expecting resistance on the hill since it's the most defensible chokepoint.

A smaller group could flank around the main path, climb the hill, and then attack any defenders holding off the main force from behind - that's the red path. Climbing in combat is insanely dangerous, so they would try to do it out of sight of the likely vantage points near the yellow attack path and hope to sneak in unnoticed.

The paths as indicated are just artistic license on my part - I'm presuming there's a lot that's not represented on the map (e.g. undergrowth) and that these are what Annika judges as likely given her result of 14 Investigation. She could be completely wrong!

I think I just automatically expected the map's main feature to be our defensive position, and the hill looked like it wasn't fully reaching map edge on right side. But I'm not opposing your plan, I was just correcting the barricade situation. :D

I definitely agree we should be trying to defend the hill. Just noting that the hill is not the grove itself, but the main obstacle on the way. If there's an easy way around the hill then I think we need a different map. :D
Apr 26, 2022 2:09 pm
OOC:
Agreed. The yellow path was part of what Tharadin assumed, it's why his dead fall was set to block that exit, hoping that they'd end up on top of the hill and be forced to the exit marked in red above.
Apr 27, 2022 6:46 am
OOC:
The red and yellow paths make sense to me too. If Melianne blocks AV50, Krenmuth will instead cut several logs and place them at the top near where the gnolls are likely to ascend on the red and yellow paths. The defenders can roll them down the hill to impede any attack.

What does everyone think of putting a lookout at square AJ26 to warn us of the attackers' approach?

This all sounds good to me!

Are we all going to start on the hill? I was planning on going for Faerie Fire on the gnolls as quickly as possible (its range is 60 ft., 20 ft. cube), but I don't think waiting them somewhere in the forest will be safe for my 13 AC...
Maybe I can be a lookout, cast spell and then pull back? Or will it be safer to wait until they climb and cast then?
Apr 27, 2022 10:02 pm
OOC:
Hey there. I really love to see you preparing that thoroughly. I've been quite busy today too, so I'll have to postpone the start of the battle to tomorrow.
Because that topic came up: Battle will be limited to the map. So you don't have to worry that the enemy will find a way off map to get to the grove.

Other than that I'm really glad to have you as players and tomorrow I'll start the battle. Feel free to strategize as you like
Apr 28, 2022 8:37 pm
As the sun sets and you finish your preparations Carric and Drusilia join you on top of the hill. They seem to be calm but still tense. We very much appreciate your help. I... Drusilia starts but suddenly an owl swoops down and lands on her shoulder. It nibbles on her ear and then flies off again
I just received the message that the druids of the Green Triskels are near. Our rangers were able to distract a part of their gnolls and so they won't be able to bring their full force to the battle. They still seem to have about 15 gnolls left. Lead be 2 druids. You better get into position they'll be here shortly. she moves to Carric and both seem to do some kind of meditation.
OOC:
So I included all of your preparations into the map. Have a short look wether I did everything correctly. I hope the lighting is alright. I can also lighten the map up a bit if you want to.
Preparation list:
Annika: Due to Annika's investigation of the situation you placed an additional barrier at AV50.
Aravel: Spike Trap at AV24
Krenmuth: Placed a log, ready to roll down the hill at AM23. Needs an action to be rolled down
Melianne: Dancing lights at the approach. You gain advantage on attacks that target creatures within the lights
Tharadin: Log at BE43

Post your positions and roll initiative. The battle is about to begin

How do we count diagonal distances? I'm not sure I'm in range of my lights - it's 120 ft. = 24 cells, which wouldn't be enough.
Either way, I'd like to be a bit closer: maybe around AK25, hiding by a tree?

Also not sure if you missed it, but I'd like to know if this yielded any results! Just in case we need to, you know.... perform an emergency retreat. XD

Once the skies are painted in sunset hues and night slowly crawls over the forest, Melianne joins her companions on the hill. She can't help but be tense, her worries from before amplified by natural apprehension before a fight. "I wish we could negotiate with them..." She sighs mostly to herself, watching her magical lights flickering between the trees. "Maybe they'll leave if we can withstand initial attack. Hopefully Rada and Phann made it safely back to the camp, and they are all safe..."

Drusilia approaches Melianne. The herbs you showed me before... I think we can perform a small trick with them.
She explains that Melianne can bind the herbs together, say a certain incantation and then throw them. They will begin to grow into a spiky undergrowth that's difficult to traverse.
Just as she finished to explain the ritual you hear a rustling from the leaves, then snarling, growling and commands in a language you don't understand.
Suddenly gnolls break through the undergrowth. There seem to be ten of them. Behind them two figures in robes seem to direct them. Both of them are accompanied by a panther.
Juggrez! one of the robed figures yells and the gnolls stop. The figures murmur something and then yell MAGAN!.
The gnolls start to run at your position.

While Krenmuth casts his spell the two panthers advance toward the heroes. One of them steps into the light cast by Melianne
The two druid of the Green Triskel murmur incantations, duck down and slowly advance behind the gnoll.

Melianne stays by the tree she had chosen as her cover for the battle, nervously taping her fingers against the bark and biting her lip. The opponents are too far away for her words or magic to reach, so like Tharadin she can only wait for them to approach. Although, perhaps there is someone she can reach with her words after all... The dancer glances over at where Annika is reloading her crossbow, smiles mischievously and pulls out her lute. Nothing like some dramatic music in the middle of a battlefield, is there?

Krenmuth throws the rock but it bounced around quite a bit before settling about ten feet from where Krenmuth threw it.
Aravel meanwhile shoots an arrow at the gnolls in a very high arc. It burrows itself into the shoulder of one of the gnolls who lets out a high pitched yelp followed by a gnarl.

As all of the gnolls mostly pass the range of her lights, Melianne waves her hand to dismiss them while simultanously weaving between the trees as she runs closer to the action - perhaps foolishly, but the dancer is determined to assist her allies. She dashes past Annika and the panther, rushes through the bushes and pauses at the edge of the hill, eyes focused on the gnolls below.

"Leave before you perish!" She calls to them as her hands are enveloped by faint flames of her magic.
OOC:
Move to AK24, cast Bane (lvl 1, save 12) on two gnolls and the panther that's next to Drusilla.

Also in advance, if more than one opponent targets me next turn (i.e. if gnolls can reach me) and any attack hits, I'm forcing a reroll for that attack with a luck point.

Annika's shot hits the panther right in the head. It slumps down and is dead.
Melianne's spell is very effective. All three foes will have trouble fighting from now on.
Tharadin meanwhile throws another javelin at one of the gnolls but only hits a tree.

The gnolls meanwhile continue to advance on your position. In the south four gnolls dash forward while two only run up a few steps and begin to fire arrows at Aravel and Krenmuth. Both shot fly way above their heads though.
The two gnolls that Melianne hit with her spell, fire an arrow each in retaliation and then continue forward. With extraordinary acrobatic talent and a dash of luck Melianne can narrowly avoid both arrows.
OOC:

I made Tharadin's move as Dramasailor is currently injured. One panther down and all three of Melianne's opponents have the 'Bane' debuff.
Melianne (with a lot of luck) wasn't hit. I used the lucky trait to reroll the crit.

Krenmuth and Aravel are up!

Aravel slightly began to panic. An unfortunate stumble to the ground. An arrow aimed at his face passing overhead. Things were getting terribly serious, and there was a great risk that the world's eminent genius on ancient elven archaology was at risk. Why wouldn't these gnolls fall back in the face of their mounting losses? Were they rabid? That would be the last thing he needed. What he most certainly did need was a safer spot, this one was about to have gnolls climbing all over it. So he quickly loosed an arrow at the gnoll who had the indignity of shooting at him, and he made for what he perceived to be the center of the defenses.

Aravel's arrow hits its target. The gnoll doesn't seem to be gravely injured though. Just like a ghost Aravel disappears in the undergrowth.
Krenmuth's shining stone flies down the elevation in a high arc, bounces around a bit and stops at a position a bit away from where he aimed at.

The two enemy druids run at the elevation, just behind the gnolls. You don't know what they are up to but at least they don't seem to be doing anything malicious until now.
The remaining panther wants to pounce at Melianne but Drusilia intervenes, runs up to and swings her staff at it. The panther in response tries to bury its teeth into her arm. While Drusilia can evade the panther's attack she hits it on the head with a satisfying 'Clonk!'-sound
Carric meanwhile shields your back from the coming advance of the remaining two gnolls that advance from the north.
OOC:

Aravel successfully hit a gnoll and hid himself.
Krenmuth's throw wasn't really accurate but provides some important lighting nevertheless
Drusilia is entertaining the remaining panther and damaged it quite a bit.

Round 5 is about to begin and the battle is entering its hot phase as the enemies have advanced nearly all the way to you.

"Careful," Annika whispers to Tharadin as she moves nearer to his position. "The gnolls are closing, but we don't know what those druids are up to yet. We should try to take them out before they can bring their magic to bear."

She spots one of the druids moving through the trees. "S̷̜̃u̴̼͌f̵̢̎f̶̡̅é̶̺r̸̢̅ ̶͙̽a̵̼͆n̸̖̾d̴̋͜ ̷͎̓ḏ̵͒i̸͍͠e̶̥͗," she hisses as she brings up her crossbow to fire.

Melianne steps over to the panther and with a swift motion she pierces its flank with her rapier. Dark blood oozes from the wound and it breaks down.
Annika meanwhile tries to hit the druid but her bolt is deflected by the skin of the druid that due to some magical effect seems to be much harder than usual.
Tharadin's javelin meanwhile hits its mark, lodges itself into the shoulder of the beast which lets out a high pitched shriek.
The gnolls meanwhile advance further. On the north side the want to get up the ramp. One of them falls down into the pit that you dug out before. The other recklessy circles around it and shoots at Drusilia.
On the southern flank the four of the gnolls break out into a sprint and begin to climb the elevation in near suicidal manner. The two that fired arrows before do so again, aiming at Tharadin and Krenmuth.
Drusilia and Tharadin easily dodge the arrows aimed at them. Krenmuth is not so lucky though. As he takes a quick glance over the log the gnoll immediately takes it chance and fires an arrow with deadly precision. It grazes Krenmuth's head leaving a bleeding wound.
OOC:

Melianne killed the panther.
Annika hexed the druid but didn't hit him with her bolt. I marked the hexed druid with a purple glow. The other one is just beside him.
The gnoll that missed Drusilia would've had a bane die subtracted but it didn't matter in this case
Tharadin inflicted 7 damage to the gnoll at AD36.
Krenmuth was hit by a critical hit but rolled lucky on the damage and therefore only sustained 6 damage

Surrounded! How terrible. On one side slavering dog-people were clambering up the hillside in a suicidal charge whilst on the other side the collapse of his stake trap and subsequent yell told Aravel that his trap had worked, but announced even more of the savages closing the distance. He could only hope that the younger races held firm. Surely the gnolls would break off their attack at any moment, after sustaining such injuries. Had they no sense of self-preservation?

Such thoughts turned doubtful as the first gnoll crested the climb, to be met by Aravel's shot...

Aravel's arrow hits its mark and burrows itself into the shoulder of the gnoll. Just like a ghost he disappears into the shadows again. At the same time Krenmuth summons the power of the winds. Two of the gnolls can claw into the flank they are climbing but the other two are blown away and tumble to the ground.

The two druid advance a bit further and then begin to cast a spell. A pillar of light shines down on Tharadin and Annika. At first it's pretty comfortable but suddenly the light is so intense that it begins to burn on the skin. On the other side the druids seem to have lost their magical armor and should therefore be easier to hit.
Drusilia and Carric on the other side advance on the gnoll and hit them with their staffs. Especially Drusilia is relentless and hits the gnoll in the pit trip with so much power that her staff croaks.

Annika's bolt lands in a bush beside the druid.
Even though Tharadin furiously swings his axe at the gnoll but even though it's hanging from the side of the elevation it can evade all attacks.
Melianne's thrust though finds its way and pierces the goblin in the pit trap. It slumps down onto the bottom of the pit... dead...

The gnolls meanwhile have renewed their attack. The two gnolls with the longbows rain down arrows at Tharadin and Krenmuth but both miss. One gnoll tries to stab Carric but fails too. The two gnolls that weren't blown away finally climb the ledge. With fletched teeth and drawn spears they are now ready to attack up close.

The two gnolls that were blown down shake their head. After the druids bark orders at them they begin to reclimb the elevation in suicidal fervor

Annika's bolt flies true and hits the druid right into the heart. The druid sinks to his knees and drops to the side. Dead. The column of light over Annika flickers and dies out
Melianne wildly swirls around her rapier and nearly hits Carric in the face but doesn't even come close to the gnoll.
Tharadin's wild attacks are similarly unsuccessful. He swing his axe in wide arcs but the gnoll can easily dodge all attacks.

The gnolls meanwhile renew their assault. Another one climbs the ledge and runs at Krenmuth with a drawn spear. The skilled paladin has no problem to avoid the attack though.
Tharadin comes under heavy attacks with two arrows coming at him as well as a spear thrust from the gnoll in front of him. But in his barbaric rage he can read the battlefield like hardly anyone else could and in exactly the right time he ducks, steps to the side and then bends his body to the side, avoiding all attacks.

Aravel peeks out from his cover fires an arrow, kills a gnoll and ducks back into cover again. It almost seems to be too easy.
Krenmuth hits the shoulder of the gnoll in front of him. It yelps and seems to be heavily wounded but is still standing.
Then the cleric directs the winds to blow the gnolls away again but the gnolls seem to get used to the strong air currents produces by his spell and are unphased.

The boars that just arrived charge into the direction of the gnolls.

The druid left fighting once again shifts his spell so that Tharadin is seared by the intense light. He looks at his fallen companion, at the boars and then seems to encourage the gnolls to attack even further by waving his arms and yelling in a language you don't know.
OOC:

Another gnoll down.
Tharadin has to make a DC12 CON saving throw. On success he takes 2 damage, otherwise 4 (Not considering rage).

The tide of the battle seems to shift in your favour. Melianne, Annika and Tharadin can act once again!

Bovine friends to the rescue!
"My apologies, Carric!" Melianne tries to awkwardly navigate her strikes over the barricade without elbowing any of the allied druids in the face; it is harder than it looks, especially in the darkness, and she never claimed to be a good fighter to begin with. If only these gnolls had a good sense to retreat now that they are clearly outnumbered...

Annika's bolt soars through the sky and with a load and satisfying 'Thump!' it hits the druid.
While the druid is still standing, the pillar of light that plagued Tharadin flickers and dies out.
While Tharadin's attacks are surely hefty they are also imprecise and the gnoll has no problem to avoid them
Melianne nearly hits the gnoll with her rapier but in the last second it can block her attack with its shield.

The gnolls retaliate. The one that was attacked by Melianne thrusts its spear at her and hits her in the shoulder.
Tharadin and Annika are both hit by the gnolls that are shooting arrows up at the elevation.
Krenmuth meanwhile has no problem to avoid the attack directed at him.

Another gnoll clawed its way up the elevation is ready to attack...

Both gnolls are blown back by the wind and one is even blown off the ledge again but the other one is able to stabilize just at the edge of the elevation.
Krenmuth attacks it but misses. Just as he becomes a bit angry about that, Aravel's arrow hits the gnoll in the head and it drops dead.

The boars run at the remaining druid and one of the gnolls. The druid turns, murmurs a few magic words and then a thunderous sound erupts. The boar is hurled back and seems to be bleeding heavily

The sounds of howling wind and arrows whizzing somewhere behind her make the dancer want to look over her shoulder and assure herself that the others are okay... Annika's crossbow bolt hits true once again. The druid gasps and coughs, apparently he's heavily wounded.

Melianne valiantly attacks her opposing gnoll but it can deflect all attacks with its shield, while snarling and barking

With surprising ease Tharadin launches the log down the cliff. It crashes down onto one of the gnolls. The gnoll is pinned down under the log. It shrieks and barks but ultimatively it can't free itself. Attacking is also impossible in this position

With all the snarling and barking going on the gnolls seem to waver for the first time. They look at the remaing druid who has to lean onto his knees in order to continue to stand and their fervor seems to subside
Nevertheless they launch another attack. Two arrows fly at Tharadin and the one on top of the elevation wants to thrust its spear at him. Unfortunately for the gnoll it's blown away and down the hill by Krenmuth's wind spell.
Tharadin can easily dodge one arrow but the other scrapes his leg

Melianne's adversary also thrusts its spear at her, scraping her at the shoulder.

Aravel shoots an arrow at the gnoll that is bothering Drusilia and Melianne. He directly hits the eye and the gnoll falls backwards to the ground.

Krenmuth's wind blows the two gnolls he was targeting back.

And during all this turmoil the two boars charge the remaining druid. It's brutal.... He's not able to provide any resistance and the two boars maim and crush him. You doubt that anyone could've survived that.

This is enough to break the fighting spirit of the gnolls.
With Drusilia, Carric and Melianne free they charge to the front. The gnolls drop their weapons and flee. The boars chase two of them.

The battle is over. You've held the grove and the enemies flee...
OOC:
Good job! You've won the battle!

If you want to you can try to catch some of the fleeing adversaries. Keep in mind that one of the gnolls is pinned down under the log that Tharadin threw off the ledge.

Krenmuth looks to the sky and says, "All praises to Valkur the Mighty!" He stops himself from chasing the gnolls and calls out to the others, "Is anyone hurt?"
Jul 1, 2022 3:13 pm
Well, that was that. The filthy beastman had been routed. Speaking of filth, Aravel quickly used some minor magics to clean the dirt accumulated from the battle off his person so he once again appeared immaculate. One must remain presentable after all. He then walked around the top of the hill, wrinkling his nose once he came near the smelly specimens, being gnoll or dwarf, giving a dismissive "hmph" at the bodies whilst marking where his arrows had lodged himself. He complemented himself on his shooting. Such a thing of precision was an art in itself. Still, that was not what he was here to be remembered for. Martial ability was one thing, but uncovering the legacy of ages was his true calling. Now that the threat had been dealt with, he could return to his passion. But first he made sure to make polite check-ups on their elven hosts, to ensure that they too had weathered the assault unharmed..
Jul 1, 2022 6:14 pm
Melianne breathes out in relief as the battle comes to a close, and carefully sheathes her rapier while looking around to take an obligatory post-combat headcount. Thankfully it seems that no one is seriously hurt, and the dancer takes her time to converse with Drusilla and Carric before moving to the other side of the battlefield.

"Tharadin, Annika, do you need any assistance?" Melianne lights her way with the green glow of the healing magic, weaving betweem the trees to reach the warlock's side and survey the battlefield from here. "Ah, I wonder if these druids were from the same group as the one who attacked our camp..."

She assists with what wounds she can to the best of her ability and afterwards makes her way downwards, where bodies lie scattered on the ground. "Hey, bovine friends!" Melianne calls out in the direction the boars disappeared in. "Thank you for your help! It was most appreciated, and I'll leave you some more food on the way back! We--"

She abruptly pauses, distracted as her eyes are caught by the sight of the log and the gnoll stuck underneath it. After a moment of hesitation, Firebird steps closer to check if their adversary is perhaps still alive.
OOC:
If they are alive, I would like to get them out - if only to leave for Carric and company to arrest.

"Porcine friends, darling. They're not cattle."

The crossbow in Annika's hands vanishes like smoke in the wind, and she begins picking at the numerous singed holes in her fine silks with disgust. "I believe I am fine, though a bit of rest would be most welcome."
Jul 3, 2022 9:08 pm
As the battle subsides an eerie silence spreads across the battle field.
Carric and Drusilia politely bow their head in response to your offers for help. The two druids look at the battle field along with Aravel
I think a good night's rest will be the best of help we'll get Drusilia responds.

The boars brush their heads against Tharadin, Melianne and Annika's upper leg, then they gallop off and disappear into the night.

The gnoll pinned down under the log is still alive but apparently a bit desperate. It stopped barking and just whimpers from time to time. Apparently it isn't a danger for now...
Jul 5, 2022 10:20 pm
Melianne can't help but feel somewhat sympathetic towards the gnoll, moved by their pained whimpers - although her sympathy is understandably limited, seeing as said gnoll was trying to kill all of them barely ten minutes ago. Still, leaving them to slowly bleed out would go against her very nature and her talents as a healer, so after examining the log she calls out to her companions: "Krenmuth, Tharadin, can you two please lend me a hand and move this?"
Jul 6, 2022 1:20 pm
Tharadin cracks his neck slightly, and nods. "Aye, will help." he says, feeling the tiredness of the battle wash over him as he makes his way to the fallen log. "And I am a bit scraped up, if you could help with that at all after we tend to the others, I would be grateful." he says quietly to Melianne as they go about freeing the gnoll.
Jul 6, 2022 2:52 pm
"Melianne, I am glad to help. I do not believe in murdering helpless prisoners. But keep in mind he will tear our throats out if given a chance." Krenmuth binds the gnolls arms and legs before helping remove the log. "Perhaps the great Tree will know what to do with him."
Jul 6, 2022 9:27 pm
With combined strength you lift the log and drag the gnoll out from under it. Its legs seem to be severely damaged. It barks at you but you can see that it just tries to appear tough, currently it doesn't seem to be threat.
Carric and Drusilia join you.
Seems like you've decided to show mercy. So be it. At least for now. We will bind the beast and bring it to the cove. Maybe it can at least provide us with some information on the Green Triskel Clan. Carric says, waves his hands and conjures some vines that bind the beast's arms and snout.

You retreat back to the cove under the old tree. The gnoll is placed in a wooden cage
An owl brings news to Drusilia that the rangers of the clan were able to disperse the rest of the attackers.
She bows her head Unnecessary bloodshed, but the Green Triskels wanted it that way. Nevertheless, I invite you to spend the night here, Tomorrow you can tell your leader that you've found new friends in the Owl Claw Clan. We will cooperate with you as long as you respect nature around your dig site. Whatever happens in your dig site is nothing our spirits can touch.
If you want to contact us you can always rely on the owls as reliable messengers

She guides you to a place where bedrolls made out of plant fibers lie. The area is surprisingly warm even though no fire is burning here.
OOC:
If there is anything you want to do in the cove you can do so. Else I'd proceed us to your arrival at the camp on the next day

Jul 8, 2022 1:07 am
As the rush of adrenaline leaves and the after-battle exhaustion settles over her, Melianne's thoughts once again return to what was bothering her before the attack - the fate of their camp. And then the comment of Krenmuth brings forth a briefly forgotten vision which the Tree showed her, and the dancer slows her steps; she pulls away from the group while Annika is talking to Drusilia and pauses to look back at the massive tree, frowning.

Then, her mind made up, she quickly glances around for the closest druid she can find aside from Drusilia - preferrably someone who doesn't look important. - before sliding into their personal space and batting her eyelashes at them. "Excuse me, would you please be so kind as to assist me with something? A bit earlier your great Tree had showed me something, but I'm having trouble understanding its message; surely not a problem for yourself!" She smiles charmingly, though her worries shine through her tone. "Would you happen to know anything about, how I put it, a man who wears a brown suit? Or something like... three petals?"

kadeton says:
"Are you sure your grove will be safe now? These
'Green Triskels' - that can't have been the full extent of their
forces."
Drusilia slowly nods at Annika's concerns.
It's true that this was probably only a fraction of their force.
Nevertheless they live near the untamed mountains and can't afford to field large armies without risking to be invaded by neighboring tribes.
Also winter is coming and long marches in the winter are usually not a good idea. We may find some scouts or stragglers but I think that we probably fended off their main force in these lands.

She looks in the direction where the battle took place.
Unnecessary bloodshed. But it is in the nature of the Green Triskels to solve conflicts by force and so it happened. At least the bodies will provide nutrition to the land...
Melianne meanwhile found a druid who is currently weaving some vines. A rather old human in the same green robes that everyone is wearing.
He takes a step back, tilts his head and has a strict look on his face as she asks her question. After a few seconds he seems to have considered her question and answers in a coarse voice.
Oh young one... Well the Old Man Tree showed you something and someone in a brown suit appeared in your vision. Hmmm who could it be...? I think it's someone who wants to hide in plain sight he says
in a slightly joking manner before pointing at the big tree in the center.
Old man tree is a bit of a jester. Likes to insert himself into the stories he tells. I always saw him as a bear in brown robes.
As for the three petals... Let me show you something

he beckons her to follow him deeper into the cove. After a few minutes he finally points at some stones on the ground. One of them has faint carvings that resemble three petals that are pointing at a center point.
Stories are that the whole region was dominated by elven kingdoms.
And the three petals were the crest of the kingdom that occupied the area from your camp all the way to the mountains. The trees still whisper that there was one their cities, beneath the ruins you are digging up.

I hope this helps, young one. he says before he turns on his heels and slowly walks back to the center of the cove.
Some of the inhabitants of the cove take Krenmuth up on the offer to mends their belongings and he repairs some trinkets, bowls and other small items.
Carric rips out a bushel of grass , forms it into a ring and hands it to Krenmuth.
Thank you for your service. The spirits of the grove will help you heal
He says and leaves again
OOC:

The grass ring allows Krenmuth to cast 'Cure Wounds' once as a bonus action without requiring a spellslot. After that the ring expended

Aravel meanwhile studies his ring and finds out that it is a ring of jumping

"Your Tree is a rather handsome trickster then, I must say!" Melianne giggles in amusement, glancing at the central tree with a mischievous glint her eyes. She then thanks the old druid, and as he leaves her, turns to stare at the crest of the old civilization.

"Elven kingdoms... Maybe I can speak with Aravel about it later. Or Astrid..." The dancer leans down and absent-mindely traces the carving on the stone with her fingers. "But why should we follow them? And how, if the entire region was this kingdom once?" She looks back at the Tree and jokingly waves her finger at it. "You are a mystery, mister! But thank you."

With that, she goes back to rejoin her companions - mostly Krenmuth, assisting him with healing and mending to the best of her abilities.

The next day Carric and Drusilia hand you a bunch of berries and a thick stew as a hearty breakfast.
Not much is left to say. We once again thank you. Should we hear any news that could have influence on you we will happily share them with you. I hope you'll do so as well. Carric says before you leave.

The two days of marching back are rather uneventful. The camp looks about the same as when you left it. You enter and want to greet the guards but they just blankly stare into the air.
As you move further into the camp you see that everyone is working but no one is talking to anyone else. Some seem to do ordinary tasks like cooking or fixing tools but most of the people at the camp dig at an area that hasn't been excavated until now. They dig down into the ground and an orderly bucket chain moves the dirt from the pit they've dug to a dump hill further to the west.
You try to make them react to you but calling, waving or touching don't seem to work...

Mysterious things are happening at the camp. Let's get to the bottom of this in the next chapter
