Chapter 3: Ship people meet woods people

Aravel smoothly swung from behind the rock like flowing water and loosed an arrow at the nearest gnoll of the advancing group. It planted itself neatly in its right eye, ending it its advance thoroughly. Their number and dirty appearance of the gnolls was rather worrisome, but the intrepid explorer danced back into cover to hide once more quickly. Imagine they might attack him back!
OOC:
Aravel hits with a critical hit for 29 damage, so I imagine it's quite dead.
Hide again, Stealth 10.

Krenmuth throws the rock but it bounced around quite a bit before settling about ten feet from where Krenmuth threw it.
Aravel meanwhile shoots an arrow at the gnolls in a very high arc. It burrows itself into the shoulder of one of the gnolls who lets out a high pitched yelp followed by a gnarl.

The druids meanwhile rush behind a bush while their panthers further advance at your position. The one that was seriously wounded by Annika is now directly in front of the elevation while the other one is sneaking up on it from the side.
Drusilia and Carric tightly grip their weapons and ready themselves to defend the flank
OOC:

Krenmuth threw the stone but wasn't very accurate.
Aravel heavily wounded the gnoll. You had advantage on the roll but the gnoll is outside the first range of the shortbow which incurs a disadvantage in turn. So your roll is a normal one. I just took the first number you rolled for resolving the attack. Still quite a damaging roll

Melianne, Annika and Tharadin are up!

Melianne warily watches the darkness beyond the circles of light, trying to track enemy movements even while her fingers still strum the strings of her lyre. They only still when Firebird spots a sleek shadow at the bottom of the hill, yellow eyes of the feline gleaming in the night. "Hey, kitty, how about you go and hunt somewhere else? This bird is a bit too firey for your taste, I promise!" Melianne cheekily waves at the panther, although her words are likely lost on the animal - but perhaps the magic in them won't be.
OOC:
Targeting the panther on AI24. I believe it can be used on animals, at least by RAW?
(Unless I can't see it - in this case, Dodge again.)

Vicious Mockery (psychic damage) - (1d4)

Tharadin picks up a javelin and gives it a hefty heave towards the pack to the west.
OOC:
D/A javelin throw at the nearest gnoll to the west.

Javelin to hit (disadvantage) - (2d20L1+6)

(39) + 6 = 9

Javelin damage - (1d6+4)

Wanting to make the most of their tactical advantage, Annika leaves the task of animal control to Melianne and concentrates on the advancing gnolls.
OOC:
Bonus action: Cast Hex at the gnoll at AE15 - it will have disadvantage on Wisdom checks
Action: Crossbow attack at the same gnoll, with advantage from Dancing Lights

The panther shakes its head on Melianne's words. Unfortunatly it seems to be even more angry than before
Tharadin's javelin flies way above the gnolls heads and lands in a bush.
Annika's crossbow bolt hits the gnoll. The gnoll lets out a final yelp and slumps over.

The rest of the gnolls continue to advance on your position.
When Aravel was hiding before he stepped on a twig which made a loud crack. Nevertheless the gnolls seem to be unphased. Maybe they are too distracted by their advance.
OOC:
Aravel and Krenmuth are up!
@kadeton Aravel didn't exactly specify which gnoll he targeted so I chose the one at AF15 which is now heavily wounded. If you wanted to hit that one you can change your attack.
The hexed gnoll is indicated by the purple glow.

One gnoll down!

Hearing the baying of the gnolls approaching, the elf seriously began looking where to withdraw to. But first there was time for another shot. The incline should buy him enough time, or so he hoped...
OOC:
Standard: Aravel shoots a gnoll that seems unaware of him within bow range (X-32?).
To hit: 24, damage 13.

Krenmuth sees the shadows of the gnolls moving through the trees. Still using the log for cover, the cleric places another small rock under his waterskin and casts a Light spell on the rock. Death hides in darkness.
May 10, 2022 8:25 pm
Aravel shoots an arrow through the treetop. A short screaming sound indicates that it found its target.
Aravel tries to hide but stumbles and falls. He quickly gets up again but the gnoll that was hit, points at Aravel and gnarls. Aravels doesn't speak gnoll language but he doubts that it was admiring his armor...

Krenmuth enchants another stone

The two druids meanwhile advance on your position and take cover behind a tree.
Their 'pets' both begin to sprint and climb the elevation with relative ease. One heavily wounded panther is in front of Annika, the other one near Drusilia
OOC:
One gnoll wounded. But Aravel's attempt to hide is unsuccessful,

Melianne, Tharadin and Annika are up!

Annika is lining up another shot on the approaching gnolls when the panther crests the hill in front of her. With a muttered curse, Annika turns her crossbow on the animal at point-blank range.

Bonus: Hex the panther
Action: Attack the panther (no disadvantage due to Crossbow Expert)

As all of the gnolls mostly pass the range of her lights, Melianne waves her hand to dismiss them while simultanously weaving between the trees as she runs closer to the action - perhaps foolishly, but the dancer is determined to assist her allies. She dashes past Annika and the panther, rushes through the bushes and pauses at the edge of the hill, eyes focused on the gnolls below.

"Leave before you perish!" She calls to them as her hands are enveloped by faint flames of her magic.
OOC:
Move to AK24, cast Bane (lvl 1, save 12) on two gnolls and the panther that's next to Drusilla.

Also in advance, if more than one opponent targets me next turn (i.e. if gnolls can reach me) and any attack hits, I'm forcing a reroll for that attack with a luck point.

Annika's shot hits the panther right in the head. It slumps down and is dead.
Melianne's spell is very effective. All three foes will have trouble fighting from now on.
Tharadin meanwhile throws another javelin at one of the gnolls but only hits a tree.

The gnolls meanwhile continue to advance on your position. In the south four gnolls dash forward while two only run up a few steps and begin to fire arrows at Aravel and Krenmuth. Both shot fly way above their heads though.
The two gnolls that Melianne hit with her spell, fire an arrow each in retaliation and then continue forward. With extraordinary acrobatic talent and a dash of luck Melianne can narrowly avoid both arrows.
OOC:

I made Tharadin's move as Dramasailor is currently injured. One panther down and all three of Melianne's opponents have the 'Bane' debuff.
Melianne (with a lot of luck) wasn't hit. I used the lucky trait to reroll the crit.

Krenmuth and Aravel are up!

Aravel slightly began to panic. An unfortunate stumble to the ground. An arrow aimed at his face passing overhead. Things were getting terribly serious, and there was a great risk that the world's eminent genius on ancient elven archaology was at risk. Why wouldn't these gnolls fall back in the face of their mounting losses? Were they rabid? That would be the last thing he needed. What he most certainly did need was a safer spot, this one was about to have gnolls climbing all over it. So he quickly loosed an arrow at the gnoll who had the indignity of shooting at him, and he made for what he perceived to be the center of the defenses.
OOC:
Action: Aravel shoots at the gnoll that shot at him: Attack 14, damage 5.
Move: to AN-29 (for cover from big tree).
Bonus: Cunning Action - Hide (Stealth 14)

Still too far away for my spells, thinks Krenmuth, crouched behind the log for cover. He tosses his rock with the Light cantrip at square AF35.

Rolls

Throwing (Dexterity) with disadvantage - (2d20L1)

Aravel's arrow hits its target. The gnoll doesn't seem to be gravely injured though. Just like a ghost Aravel disappears in the undergrowth.
Krenmuth's shining stone flies down the elevation in a high arc, bounces around a bit and stops at a position a bit away from where he aimed at.

The two enemy druids run at the elevation, just behind the gnolls. You don't know what they are up to but at least they don't seem to be doing anything malicious until now.
The remaining panther wants to pounce at Melianne but Drusilia intervenes, runs up to and swings her staff at it. The panther in response tries to bury its teeth into her arm. While Drusilia can evade the panther's attack she hits it on the head with a satisfying 'Clonk!'-sound
Carric meanwhile shields your back from the coming advance of the remaining two gnolls that advance from the north.
OOC:

Aravel successfully hit a gnoll and hid himself.
Krenmuth's throw wasn't really accurate but provides some important lighting nevertheless
Drusilia is entertaining the remaining panther and damaged it quite a bit.

Round 5 is about to begin and the battle is entering its hot phase as the enemies have advanced nearly all the way to you.

Melianne, Annika and Tharadin are up again!

Initiative order:

Melianne jumps in to assist Drusilia, even though her heart is still racing from the memory of gnolls' arrows narrowly avoiding her head. Still, there is no time to hesitate in battle, and she draws her rapier, trying to push back the thoughts of her potential untimely demise.
OOC:
Move to AP24 and attack the panther.
If until my next turn anyone attacks me with a roll higher than 12 and lower than 17, I'm using Cutting Words on their attack roll as reaction. :D

"Careful," Annika whispers to Tharadin as she moves nearer to his position. "The gnolls are closing, but we don't know what those druids are up to yet. We should try to take them out before they can bring their magic to bear."

She spots one of the druids moving through the trees. "S̷̜̃u̴̼͌f̵̢̎f̶̡̅é̶̺r̸̢̅ ̶͙̽a̵̼͆n̸̖̾d̴̋͜ ̷͎̓ḏ̵͒i̸͍͠e̶̥͗," she hisses as she brings up her crossbow to fire.
OOC:
The druids are at W/X-30, right? It's really hard to see them on the map.

Move: to AI-29
Bonus: Hex the druid at X-30 (disadvantage on Wisdom checks)
Action: Attack the hexed druid

Using the Bardic Inspiration die from Melianne to boost the attack roll, unless a 13 already hits.
