Character Spitballing

Mar 11, 2022 12:08 am
Use this thread to brainstorm and share your potential character options with other players as well as an arena to ask questions of your GM, Slay.
Mar 11, 2022 12:19 am
To start, here's the Questworlds SRD. Character creation is found on page 33.
Mar 11, 2022 12:43 am
I'm making a really strong guy. Again, my first thought is WWE Hulk, since I like WWE and I like Hulk, but I might do something else if another idea jumps out at me.
Mar 11, 2022 1:19 am
I have a Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew variant in mind. One from the Venom-verse, so she and her symbiote go by Poison now.

How are we handling Abilities? Jessica Drew is a S.H.E.I.L.D. trained super spy, and an modified human with powers, and my version has the symbiote also. I was thinking the "nested" or Umbrella method looked useful.

I think I can make it work either way, but grouping things under those different umbrellas allows for things to be "shut down" like if someone takes the symbiote. Or Mutants is another good argument for Umbrella. A lot of people have technology that shuts off powers in mutants. It might make it easier to delineate which abilities are part of the Powers and which are just their natural abilities.
Mar 11, 2022 1:48 am
Here's a first stab at Nightcrawler. I'm new to QuestWorlds, so I'm thinking of Abilities through the lens of Aspects in the Fate RPG (which might not be a perfect analogy). Anyway, feedback is appreciated! :-)

Name
Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler)

Abilities
BAMF! and I teleport
Blends with shadows
Prehensile tail
Wall-crawler
Trained to resist mental attacks
X-Men team training
Former circus trapeze artist
Really a kind-hearted fuzzy elf
Fluent in many languages
Swashbuckling bravado
Devout Catholic
Always watching from the shadows

Flaws
Monstrous visage
Religious code

I'm guessing we all get feedback on our characters and Abilities for a bit before we firm up the Abilities and then move on to assigning ratings to Abilities? (the ratings part of character creation is on page 34 in the SRD PDF once we get to that stage).

Dreamblade says:

I was wondering if nested / Umbrella was an option or not as well. If it's an approach we can use, I'll do some more thinking about how to group things.
Mar 11, 2022 2:32 am
I think that's a good start on a Nightcrawler. But I think the game intends you to pick one to be your Concept Ability. Much like a High Concept in Fate. I'm not sure which if any of those apply.

You could maybe trade out "Trained to resist mental attacks" for a concept like "Swashbuckling Mutant Freedom-fighter". I feel, the "trained to resist mental attacks" could be covered by "X-Men Team Training". But if defer to our GM on how important the Concept is an ability.

Great feedback Dreamblade! I'll get our GMs feedback and make adjustments.
Mar 11, 2022 3:38 am
And this is where I'm at on Poison:

Concept: Sardonic Super-Spy

Abilities:
Femme Fatale
S.H.I.E.L.D Protocols
Former H.Y.D.R.A. Villain
Polyglot

Radioactive Spider Enhancements
Bio-Electric Blasting
Contaminant Immunity
Air Gliding

Alien Symbiote Relationship
Eyes on the Back of my Head
Bio-mass Redistribution

Flaws:
Sound and Flame Vulnerability
Guilt of an Absentee Mother
Mar 11, 2022 4:40 am
My favorite mutant has always been Magneto (I'm a metallurgist and his powers would be very useful at my job), but he's kinda OP. I'm thinking maybe a child of Magneto who instead of having all his stuff, can melt and reform metal that he touches into whatever shape. I'll flesh out the rest if this works. For flaws, I'm thinking daddy issues (struggles with how to feel when Magneto is around) and insecurity surrounding his abilities (due to the obvious comparison to his father).

Thoughts?
Mar 11, 2022 6:02 am
I like it. There was a character like that in the comic at one point. Magnus or something. Son of Rogue and Magneto. He had his father's powers and a version of his mother's curse. People he touched skin-to-skin became metal.

You don't have to make him OP though. It could be a younger Magneto, someone not as skilled with their powers. I mean...we're looking at having a Hulk on the team. The narrative structure of the game means you decide how OP he is. He doesn't have to be gathering iron from peoples blood and knocking down whole city blocks in one go.
Mar 11, 2022 10:58 pm
Yeah. I googled Magnus and it looks like he was even an Exile, so I'm thinking I'll pick him (or at least some version of him, I don't know all his background lore aside from what's on his wiki).

Hovering Flight

Hello everyone!

We'll continue to use this thread for character creation questions and brainstorming. If you are interested in warping or reconfiguring your own idea with something random, you can send me a few numbers between 1 and 400,000 and I will reply, either privately or here in the thread, with your ability/concept results.

To elucidate with an example, if you gave me the numbers 478, 20942, and 97, you results would be:

478 - Wealthy financier
20942 - Pyro-titan (artifact creation: flaming shield and lance)
97 - Altered human

From there you can remodel your results or drop them entirely :)

Well, I'm really torn on which of the many characters i always have in the back of my brain that I want to play. Anybody got thoughts on what they want to do?

Just spitballing but we could base ourselves on a trope like The Five Man Band?

You could always try adding some randomness to your potential character stack by providing me with a couple of numbers between 1 and 400,000 and use those results to alter what you may have in mind.

Thanks for inviting me! I will take a look at the Rulebook and create something soon. I am a teacher/librarian and the trimester just ended so I have papers to grade so it may be a day or two.
I've Never played this system, but really like the concept. I enjoy playing sneaky or clever characters, so I will dig through my long box for ideas. Maybe a loki or dr.strange type

Ferris Rudiger is a metallurgy professor who was touring a foundry with his students when the axle on a pouring ladle failed and molten hot iron poured down to where his students were watching in horror, awaiting their doom. As the metal splashed down, without thinking, he reached out to block the iron and instead of being horribly burned and scarred, his mutant gene manifested. Everyone present was shocked to find the iron had been completely solidified mid-flow. Hours later, he was contacted by the Foundation about the incident and brought on-board.

Looks like you're on the right path. The Foundation and The Archons both begin 13 but you're free to add points or create breakouts.

Here are your randomized results:

777 - Bloodstone-eyed alicorn
295802 - Spew tar

Wow. A couple of disparate results; however, sometimes a leftfield result can put an interesting spin on a character.

I don't really understand the Foundations and Archons thing. Are those the abilities or are there individuals within those we are supposed to write in as specific allies, etc?

Edit: Just googled it and an Alicorn is a flying unicorn (first result was from My Little Pont/Equestria)? Is that accurate? Lol. Maybe I'll spew tar, then glitter bomb them with my unicorn, lmao. Or maybe he's just going to catch a lot of crap for riding a unicorn.

No problem. I'm slowly working on a Terms and Definitions thread. Currently this is what I have for Archons and The Foundation:

Archon: A director of The Foundation. There are currently twelve Archons. The majority of The Foundation venerate the Archons for their dedication to unite and harbour the expanding multiverse.

The Foundation: The constituency, including the Archons and recruits.

Think of an Archon as the equivalent of a veteran superbeing, like Superman or Wonder Woman in the Justice League. I will be listing all current twelve Archons very soon.

The Foundation is the benevolent faction that has birthed your group, headed by the Archons, and includes all other members of the Foundation. A breakout example could be a specific hero or heroine or Foundation member (Vicar Frost, The Fremlin, Old Thorn, etc - you're free to create your own Foundation members).

That's right - a winged unicorn. Your alicorn could be metal-based or an artificial lifeform, if you preferred, with the ability to spew tar or a tar-like substance. You could throw these two results away, too.

Question: Do we need to have an origin story for our powers or is that not relevant?

You can provide this as we RP or detail it in miniature, like a few lines, for your fellow players' benefit. Mystery is interesting, too, however. It's altogether up to you.

Ok...finally made up my mind. I'm going to play U.F.O. Girl. She's a tech based hero who can manipulate gravity. She has emitters that can attract or repel objects and can crush things by increasing the force of gravity upon it, and she flies with a belt type device. I'll start writing her up in the morning.

Points add up. Nice name change. Clive Barker, or coincidence? The only thing I would change has to do with your concept (Headstrong Mutant Sorceress). You get this ability free and it starts at 17; but I think you've made your Demonology ability as your main ability, which is completely fine and you can keep it this way, just give your Headstrong Mutant Sorceress a rating of 13. Does this make sense?

Darkweaver/Decillion has some overlap with Imajica; I'll happily modify Decillion if we feel the characters should be more differentiated. :-)

Lookin' great. I don't see an issue with origin/power overlap, unless someone else does; in fact, the overlap creates potential drama.

As for ability notation, 20 is kept as 20 while 21 would be 1M (22 is 2M, and so on).

The reason for the base ability for Imajica's discs being Stepping discs, is that I added a variation to the original power that allows her to create and throw stepping discs like the character Nimble, from The Nevers, which she can use to hop, jump, climb, or walk across an area. The powers, as manifest by Marvel's Majik, are the Breakouts associated with the base.

Backstory

Toriwake Itsu proved to be gifted in science from an early age. Her parents were typical of the Japanese immigrants to America, except that her father was a tech CEO. Tori grew up playing in laboratories playing with experimental electronics and machines. She fixed her first buggy program when she was 7, created her first A.I. at 10. When She turned 16 she completed her doctorates in Newtonian and Quantum Physics. She was going to represent the US in the Olympics as a member of the gymnastics team, but when a Meta Incident (her world's term for Superheroes and Supervillain fights) crashed into the stadium during practice, she used her prototype Emitter Bands to save a large portion of the bystanders. Upon receiving the incident report, the Committee thanked her for her help, then disqualified her from competing. They said her potential abuse of super-tech left to many questions.

From there she authored a few patents for her father's company, made a small fortune, and retired. She knew working to build better tech would make for a better world, but she wanted to do something now. With her father's people turning her inventions into devices to improve ordinary people's lives, Toriwake became UFO Girl. She spent some time helping the more experienced heroes learning the ropes, but when the Foundation came calling looking for recruits to help whole new worlds, she couldn't pass up the chance to explore the multiverse and learn more.

A.I.T.A.D and E.N.V.O.y are artificial intelligence. AITAD (pronounced AYE-tad) stands for Artificial Intelligence Tactical Advice Display. It works like Jarvis or Friday do for Iron Man in the movies, giving her tactical and technical information she may need in battle. ENVOy (pronounced IN-voy) stands for Extraenvironmental Navigation Operative. It is her sidekick and has a smaller, less powerful Emmiter unit built into it's butt. He can fly around and tractor beam stuff and report to UFO Girl like a drone.

Just finished up grading, so should be good to start generating by the end of the week. Do you want entirely original characters or is something from an existing comic ok? There was a comic where Loki very briefly, was sorcerer Supreme, or maybe a Loki "variant". I can also think of something new with that flavor.. Whatever you think fits

Stefanie Chase was an Olympic hopeful in both archery and sprinting when the incident happened. She was driving to a qualifier when she was driven off the road by what appeared to be a runaway truck. While she is still unsure of what the vehicle was, she was hit by a strange light as she pulled her self from her wrecked car.
As she passed out she could see a duplicate of herself running away, the first manifestation of her power.
While she was unable to run as well as she once did, she found her aim was better than ever.
She is a bit of a Robinhood, using her abilities to help the down trodden. She has difficulty turning down the chance to help someone in need.

Stefanie is in her late 20s, tall, thin. She has pale skin and (undecided until I find a good picture) hair.
As the Crimson Quiver she typically wears black and red leather armor that is light weight and doesn't do much except look cool.

Essential Items:
Composite Long Bow
Quiver of arrows
Leather Armor

(Anything I'm missing or should add? I'm sure she has more items, but I'm still thinking)

By my count, from the concept to Invisibility is 12 abilities. But the last three are only set to 1 or 2 which is quite low. It means you will only succeed at tasks if you roll a 1 and somehow the opposition rolls over their ability. I'm fairly certain you should have a 13 minimum in the base 12 abilities. It also looks like you may have spent 22 points extra rather than the 20. I may have done the math wrong there so double check. Finally, we are getting Archon 13 and Foundation 13 for free to represent our good standing in the organization that gives us our assignment(s).

I thought the special magic type things were the breakouts and could only be set to 1 or 2? I also thought we got 11 abilities beyond the concept or did I read that wrong? I am new to this system so I could have made that mistake.

The breakouts are +1 or +2 is my understanding as well. I think they go as a part of one of the other abilities, though (as a part you're particularly good at). I also read it as "core concept + 11 abilities".

Yes, what Paximilian said. 12 including the core concept. if they are break outs, the rest of us used a + to indicate. I didn't include any on mine because her "powers" are all a different piece of tech, not reliant on each other, but you can make your character your way. I just meant to point out I didn't understand.

Heads up that my profile name changed -- I'm now 'Dreamweaver', but still the same person. I'm playing Decillion Darkweaver the disfigured sorcerer type.

Made a minor adjustment, double checked math, but could still be off. I will submit with image after GM says it looks good

I think I'm out. Send me a note if this starts, but I'm going to take this off my list of current games.

Agreed! Game appears to be dead. I'll also take it off my list of games.
