Ch. 1 - The Festival of Merits

Mar 23, 2022 11:07 pm
After clearing the skeletons from the town's crypts and taking a short rest, you have now entered the Jumble, a large district of tangled roads and single-story buildings in the town of Jigow. The sky is cloudless and the air is warm. Throngs of people, most of them orcs and goblins, but also amongst them hobgoblins, bugbears, ogres, tieflings, and all manner of people, move through the streets, laughing, singing, running, and sightseeing.

All are enthralled by the raucous sights and sounds of the town’s ongoing Festival of Merit, where the town's constant competitiveness is at its zenith. On this day, friendly and sometimes not-so-friendly rivalries between residents are settled by contests of all kinds. Every public space is filled with festival games, food stalls, and/or other amenities splayed out for the merrymakers, and plenty of shops and private residences have flung their doors wide open to join in the revelry.

You hear snippets of conversations as people pass by: a goblin mother telling her children not to go near the cute baby horizonback tortoises, a drow guard in shining insectile armor complaining to his partner that his gauntlet was crushed by a hulking orc while arm-wrestling, and a pair of young orcs in swimwear hollering as they rush toward the banks of the Ifolon River. All around you, colorful signs and banners point toward festival booths surrounded by cheering people.

A friendly orc approaches your group with a smile and a handful of parchment fliers. He hands a flier to the closest person and cheerfully says, "Happy Festival of Merit Day, folks! Here's a list of today's events, winners of each competition will receive a magic medallion! And be sure to join us at the Black Islands for the closing ceremony just before sunset, have fun!"
OOC:
Alright everybody, here we go! :D

Please take a moment to describe your character, how they're feeling and interacting with the excitement around them, and what they want to do next!

You guys are free to do whatever you wish and attempt any of the festival games, you can split up or stay together (but please don't split up into 5 different directions lol, for the DMs sake), the city is yours!

Tereze, a tall pale woman with a commanding presence and a cold unhuman-like beauty, takes the paper and gives the orc a quick nod of acknowledgement. Turning her eyes to the page, she quietly scans over the events of the day silently, before speaking up.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I could do with a good meal after all that" She announces while she uses the brief moment of pause to dust a layer of bonemeal from her chainmailed shoulders and to shake out her stark white hair. "The promise of a reward sounds extra sweet - as long as there's enough good wine to wash it down!"

She passes the leaflet along to the next member of the makeshift group. "Looks like it's on all day. If we wait until later, I'm sure we'll all be even hungrier than now, if you want to check out any of the other events"

Tereze crosses her arms and stands with a wide stance, prepared for action - whether that be combat, pie eating or riddle solving. A large warhammer hangs off her back. A silver cresent moon emblazoned in its cheek.

This is it. Jigow. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Faelan's gaze wanders around, while the half drow follows a few steps upwind behind a big bugbear that unknowingly cuts a path for the young man from Roshana through the countless people partying. Offering the soldiers a nod of recognition, the noble looks around and smiles at his new companions in a jovial mood: "We came to the right place as it seems. Let's celebrate our victory and spend some well earned coin."

As the others take a thorough look at the freshly minted adventurer, they perceive a man with evidently most drow heritage in his veins. Long straight white hair that fall beneath his shoulders, sky blue eyes and dark skin just a few small tones lighter than black. This and his height and weight, just a tick to much for a pureblooded dark elf, are the only clues of human ancestry.
Walking with the air of self-assuredness and trust in his abilities, Faelan frequently seems to stand out. This is mirrored in his well kept, dark attire which subtly reveal his noble origins, for it is not foppish or scream of the gold it had cost, but is of considerate craft, just shy of a deliberate understatement. At his side, plain for everyone to see, there is a gilded rapier with a well-worn hilt that stands as a reminder that this half drow is no easy prey for people with ill tidings on their mind.

Spying over the shoulder of Kailani, Faelan studies the festival flyer for a few seconds. Hearing Tereze call for food, the fighter looks up and declares with a twinkle in the eye: "It might not be the most dignified idea, but let's go and get some cake."

Then he strolls in the direction of the contest.

'I could go for pie. Pie is always good. Food is always good.' Ardeth peers around the shoulder of whoever got the flier and taps the top of the flier. Clutched in the half-drow's other hand is a couple of sticks of street food already. A hood is pulled up over her head, hiding most of her face...and any occurring changes.

Only around 5'2 the half-drow has been darting from stall to , and happily chatting away with stall owners and stall goers alike, clearly enjoying herself. Yet the person aiding fighting the skeletons had been 6'3 and bearing distinctive goliath markings under the hood. Any queries have so far been met bey a wink before the bard darts off to investigate something new.

'Oh there's a group contest as well, at sunset. What do you say, if we can fight skeletons together whatever this emerald Race Grotto is should be easy. ' She grins as she scans the list.

Then suddenly rather than peering around a shoulder she peering over it and a more refined voice speaks. 'If we wish to wait... Well there is riddles nearby, those will be child's play. The maze too.'
Mar 24, 2022 8:04 pm
"Oh and there's swimming!" Kailani shouts excitedly and taps her finger next to Ardeth's. "And the pie? What kind do they have - what do you think? Faelan! Hey, What do you think?" She grabs the half drow's sleeve and tucks at it a few times. The city around her is buzzing and the young woman lets herself be swallowed by the energy and life. The member of the Ashari has not been in the town long, but she already loves the hubbub, various sounds and smells - all so different from what she is used to.

She abruptly raises her arms as if to stretch and spins around herself in careless pirouettes a few times. Kailani stops, lays a hand on Ardeth's arm for support - ignoring the sudden difference in height - and exclaims: "Pies and wine - here we come!" The dark haired tomboy winks towards Tereze and marches on in high spirits. She isn't sure about eating for sport, but she looks forward to something sweet. Afterwards she might try and convince her new acquaintances to head towards the river and stop for riddles and rhymes along the way.

Surrounded by more strange sights and sounds than she's ever experienced before, Calla's orange eyes are almost as big as her tawny ears. Bouncing from vendor to vendor in excitement her energy is infectious, if not overwhelming. Every onlooker gives her a second look, and sometimes a third as it seems harengon are not incredibly common in Jigow and she speaks in a thick accent, made almost incomprehensible by how fast the words tumble out. She keeps picking up even common items in fascination, mumbling excitedly to herself under her breath and running a hand through her tousled hair, before getting distracted by the next novelty.

"We should try our feet at the race, no question!" She says to Ardeth before continuing on, the words coming out in a quick jumble. "How about herding some tortoises after some pie?" Her sturdy woolen skirts sway violently as she practically dances from foot to foot, vibrating with barely leashed excitement and the hand-embroidered stars and moons swirling in a dizzy constellation.

Amazing introductions everyone! Feel free to continue any conversations you had going even after I move us forward (this applies to any time, just be sure to mark it as such, I often use the
[linebreak]
feature to break up a post spanning different times). I've found that games that have a lot of Player on Player interactions are some of the most fun and engaging games on GP! :)
The group makes their way through the busy streets of festival-time Jigow towards the location on the handout map labeled 1. The Best Pies in the Jumble! The savory scents of meat, pastry, and spices fill the air around a rickety but graceful three-story building mounted on the back of a gigantic horizonback tortoise, with a sign on top that reads UNBROKEN TUSK TAVERN in both Common and Orc. A cooking stand and a festival stage with a long table are set up at the tortoise’s feet, where an orc stands over a massive oven. She bustles from the oven to the stage and back, placing delicious-looking hand pies at each seat and stacking more of them on a cooling rack nearby.

Human Man
A few people are already gathered on stage, including a cocky male drow flexing his vaguely defined muscles, a beautiful halfling woman who winks at the crowd, and a scrawny young human with a mop of brown hair and a scruffy beard. He downs the rest of his drink, stands up and with his hands over his head, cheers to the small crowd gathered at the edge of the stage. The audience rowdily whoops, hollers, and claps in response, anticipating the beginning of the contest.

Agatha Silverspoon
As your party approaches the scene, the orc calls out in a cheerful, melodic baritone, "Come to sample the best meat pies this side of the Wastes, yes? Then come to the right place y'have! Ha! I sell ’em up there, but I’m running pie-eatin' contests down here all day, for those with orc-sized stomachs, heh. 5 silver to join in, winner gets a magic medal, but don't worry, there'll be no losers, since everyone'll get a taste of Agatha Silverspoon's famous pies!"
Mar 26, 2022 9:40 am
Tereze smiles at the palpable excitement of the group, for a moment revealing a set of long sharp fangs. Years of habitual suppression amongst company less favourable to her kind triggered in her mind and she forced her mouth shut. She recognized it as a silly reaction, especially when so many of Jigow residents had some sort of tusk, horn or other protrusion.

"It seems the decision is made" She says to Ardeth, following after the others. "For what it's worth, I think we worked quite well together back at the crypts. I would be proud to work together in that Emerald Race with you". Besides, there was something about this town that intrigued her - and it was most likely the grand event was the best place to find out.
Tereze's mouth salivates as the scent of fresh pastry whafts through the air. "Sign me up chef!" She cheers, tossing Agatha a gold piece, assuming at least one of her companions wished to join her also.

With heavy footsteps, Tereze strides up the steps to the stage and secures herself a seat. She gives a joking taunt to the other competitors, theatrically yawning and showing her fangs. It felt very vulnerable, showing them so openly like this, but she wanted to make an impression. Sometimes battles were won before they reached the battlefield.
Mar 26, 2022 10:31 am
Looking over his shoulder, Faelan smiles warmly at Kailani before he answers to her excitement. And of course the question; her cheerful, bubbly way still an amazement for the fighter. "I don't know my dear. Let's risk a closer look and be surprised by cinnamon and blueberry creations."

Strolling further through the crowd, the half drow turns his head and replies to Callas idea: "Herding turtles? That sounds like fun mingled with a challenge. Count me in!"

As they are reaching Agathas Tavern, Faelans eyes wander around and take the gigantic tortoise in, which seems to serve as a base for the whole building. Crafty! Hopefully the animals the want to herd are a tiny little bit smaller. Coming up to the stage, the noble stands with closed eyes still for a moment and saviours the smell of all the pastries and pies. As a young man, used to hard training and fighting, he is accustomed to eat a lot to regain his strength. A good meat pie is just the right thing after putting some skeletons to rest. Maybe with some desert?

"Me too!" he adds without hesitation right after Tereze, while climbing the stairs and tossing a second coin to the ork chef.
Mar 26, 2022 11:07 am
"Whoohoo!" Kailani hollers and claps for both of them and looks over her shoulder to see whether more of their group join in. Pie eating as such she relishes, pie eating as a contest - personally not so much. This is not her kind of event. That doesn't stop her from cheering enthusiastically. Kailani is sure one of them will make first place and bring honor to their newly formed group.

While the others and some of the onlookers are making up their minds, the young woman buys one of the smaller, sweeter pastries for herself. She grins up to the impressive Agatha: "No Orc stomach here, I'm afraid, just a sweettooth." Pie in hand she makes her way to the front and waits for the beginning of the contest while enjoying the crispy crust and layered texture.
Mar 26, 2022 4:04 pm
A happy consensus made, Calla follows the eclectic group further into the throngs of people. Once, when she had become too deeply enthralled in examining some kind of metallic contraption painted in shades of purples, reds and yellows she had completely lost sight of her newly found compatriots and panic quickly overrode her excitement. Her eyes darted and her ears rotated in all directions trying to catch Faelen's refined tone or the oddly changing voice of Ardeth through the din - with no luck. "Kailani? Tereze?"

She had only met the other travelers earlier, but they had been accepting of her help in the fight, and she had felt a sense of kinship with their adventurous spirits. She had never felt that before at home. Quicking hopping straight up to look around above the crowd, she was able to make out two white-haired heads and she scurries to rejoin the party, leery of wandering off again.
One whiff of the mouthwatering smells at the Unbroken Tusk and the haregon's spirits are back to elation. She hadn't really known what they had meant by a 'pie eating contest' and she was relieved to find it seemed exactly as straightforward as it had sounded. Pie was pie after all. Thankfully.

Turning to Kailani she sputters about for a moment embarrassed before asking, "Howmuchisfivesilvers?" holding a gold piece in her palm. "Ha, whoops, sorry! I mean, I just don't know how many silvers in a gold piece? I usually just trade some chicken eggs for a pie!"

As Tereze bares her sharp fangs, it seems like this is the exact perfect crowd who would 1) not be bothered by large, unnatural teeth (tusks or otherwise) and 2) in fact, get excited by them. The crowd cheers even more rowdily than when the human man egged them on moments before. As Tereze takes her seat once again, the young man turns to her sitting next to him and says in awe, in a somewhat mature but still creaky voice that sounds like it is just getting to the final stages of a long time spent in puberty, "What? No fair! You've got razor-sharp fangs and all I've got is the munchies from one too many cups of ale! Ha, but don't underestimate me, I've been known to party with the orcs and ogres of Asarius, so I can handle a little too much." He says with a competitive spirit and a big smile.

The pie is honestly amazing, you can't deny it. Agatha laughs at Kailani's words, "Ha! No worries, lass. As long as you get to enjoy the pie in some way." She leans in close so not everyone can hear her as she whisper-grumbles, "I wish everyone without one would admit they didn't have one, would save me a lot of clean up, heh." She vaguely nods her head towards a corner of the stage, where a little bit of... once-eaten pie still lingers and a bucket and mop sit slightly hidden from the crowd just off the side of the stage. "Hope ya enjoy it." she smiles before throwing another batch of pies into the large outdoor oven.

She puts one big meaty foot onto the stage as she bellows into the crowd and passersby, "It's the top of the hour, last call f' any more participants!"

A rabbit that deals in eggs? Hm. The worlds are full of wonders. Kailani smiles companionable: "Ten silver pieces make a gold piece. Let me see..." She helps Calla find the right change. "I wish you great success, Calla. I'll keep my fingers crossed for good luck!" The dark haired woman demonstrates with the hand that doesn't hold half a pie and waits for Calla to join the others on stage.

"Let's hope your stomach's as big as your confidence!" Tereze jests warmly. "You know, it's still not too late to back out and try the next hour"

Gosh. The scent of these fresh pies was making her stomach grumble. She wanted to start already. She looked down at Kailani down below. She certainly seemed to be enjoying hers.
Mar 26, 2022 8:16 pm
Faelan sits in his chair, arms folded in front of him while listening to the friendly banter with a smile.

Looking at Tereze and her fangs, he starts wondering by himself, what kind of creature she could be. Coming to the conclusion that as long as she eats no people but pies, the white-haired woman is fine in his book, he turns his attention back to the here and now.
Mar 27, 2022 1:09 pm
As Kailani rests on Ardeth for before there seems to be a suddenly look of uncertainty and embarrassment from under the hood, before suddenly the shorter more familiar stature is backs as the half-drow gives a cheers and follows after the rest towards pies.
At the call for last orders Ardeth frantically waves her hand with the silvers clutched in it. The half-drow was always hungry.

The young man's eyes narrow and a grin cross his face, "Oooo, sounds like someone is a little intimidated. Good luck, I think you're gonna need it." He turns to the pies placed in front of him and begins readying himself as Agatha Silverspoon takes a stand in the front of the stage.

The rowdy crowd becomes just big, anticipatory eyes and giant, cheerful smiles.

"Whoever can finish the most of my delicious pies, wins one o' these!" She holds up a glittering tin-colored medallion shaped like a meat pie, attached to a leather strap like a necklace.

"On yer mark..."

All of the contestants hover their heads over the pies placed before them, waiting for the signal...

"Get set..."

The crowd is silent as a hush falls over the busy street, nearly every passerby has stopped and is staring at the stage...

"DIG IN!"
[ +- ] Best Pies in the Jumble Contest!
Mar 27, 2022 3:09 pm
As soon as Agatha yells the commencement, the crowd goes wild cheering on either one person or everyone all together, and the contestants begin scarfing the pies down.

Everyone gets through their first pie without a sweat.

It takes a little bit longer, but the second one goes down smoothly.

Halfway through the third pie, both the drow man and the human guy next to Tereze choke. They're quickly able to get the bits of pie dislodged, but they cannot go on further and slump back in their chairs, trying to hold in everything they just ate.

The halfling woman however, is not dismayed. She finished the third with ease, then the fourth without a rise in difficulty. The crowd is going crazy as this woman eats more than what seems is possible for her tiny stature.

But finally during her fifth pie, she suddenly stops as all of the color drains from her face. She quickly darts off the back of the stage, holding her hand up to her mouth.

Tereze practically absorbs the first pie, ravenously hungry from the days activities, but she soon regrets it - a sharp pain forming in her side from eating too fast.

Nevertheless, she powers through the second pie, but the pain increases. She clutches onto her waist with a strong hand to put some pressure on, hoping to relive the pain. She looks over at her neighbouring competition and finds some relief in the fact that he appears to be struggling too.

But finally, the third pie is just too hard to get through. She takes a single spoonful more than the human, just to make a point, but she still pushes her chair away from the table in a sad sign of defeat.

"I thought... Her entire body.. would be smaller ... than my stomach... She groans to her new battle companion.

It would be hard to believe that the bard had already been snacking on festival food as she practically starts to inhale. The first two are nothing special but the then those looking closely may have seen there were now tusks under the hood, rapidly making work of the 3rd and 4th pie. At the 5th however Ardeth finds herself having to run after the halfling as everything seems to hit her stomach at once.

Calla briefly touches the coin in her pocket for good luck then starts to dig in. She scarfs down the first pie, humming a content sigh as the oozy filling surrounded by flaky, buttery crust warms her from the inside out. It's gone too fast before she's on to the next one! The second is followed quickly by the third, and then the fourth!

When Agatha slaps the fifth down in front of the bunny, Calla cuts a slab and spears it with her fork. She lifts it towards her mouth, but her hand gets slower and slower and slower the closer it gets until it's hovering just before her lips and she's staring down her nose cross-eyed at it. Finally, she drops it back to the plate.

A series of growing burps start gurgling and her eyes go wide in embarrassment before she lets out a huge belch and slaps both her hands over her mouth. Groaning in discomfort and mortification she hunches over and rests her head on the table while she tries to clear the black spots swimming in her vision.

"Wow! What a finish for this round! Good thing I had made a coupl'a extra of these." Agatha digs around in her apron's pockets until she brandishes three of the tin-colored pie-shaped medallions. Uh, you okay back there, lass?" She calls out to the halfling woman who ducked behind the stage.

"Yes, yes, I am ..." burp "okay..." The halfling woman groggily climbs back onto the stage. The color has mostly returned to her face, but she is still clutching her stomach.

"Good ta see..." Agatha says waveringly. "Well, ta this hour's THREE winners, a medallion for each of yas!" She goes one by one and places the medallions around the halfling, Calla, and Ardeth's necks. "Congratulations to ya each!" The crowd gives one more big whooping applause before they begin to disperse. "There'll be another contest at the top of the next hour, come back to see the next round!" she yells to the thinning crowd.

The young man turns to Tereze sitting next to him, and in a shaky voice says, "Congratulations, I ... urgh... saw you snag that last bite, heh. I think we were pretty evenly matched, was a good fight." He takes a second to breathe and adjust his sitting position. Looking somewhat relieved, he then resumes, "The name's Irvan. Was great to meet you, and uh, I guess lose to you, ha. Would love to meet up with you again at the final ceremony. See you then!" He smiles joyfully through his queasiness as he begins heading off the stage and into the crowded streets below.

Tereze gives Irvan a respectful pat on the back as he leaves and also heads off the stage to join back up with the group.

Calla waddles to rejoin the group, still seeing black spots and fighting down her gurgling stomach but with a huge smile as she looks at her medal.

"I’ve never won a medal before! Here, it smells so good!" She says, holding it out to the group proudly before the sudden movement aggravates her gastric distress and she doubles over moaning.
Boop says:
"How about... something that doesn't involve too much... movement next?"
"Yes please, let’s find a nice cool glade to sit and digest - didn’t the flyer say something about a riddle teller? How about that next?"
Mar 28, 2022 6:36 pm
Smiling at Calla and Ardeth, the half-drow gives the two hungry-no-more ladies a big thumb-up, while his right rests on his belly and tries its best to calm the commotion down.

"We should sit down somewhere and see other people competing." Faelan proclaims with a somewhat strained tone. Just a few minutes would be fine. "We could get an advantage by watching other people fail." he suggests with a wink.

Herding tortoises must we definitely wait. Maybe MAYBE the riddle thing, but giving their bodies time to digest would be his number one option at the moment.

The party, with most of them feeling quite bloated and slow, amble through the busy Jigow streets once again, now towards the next contest: 6, Riddles and Rhymes.

When they reach the spot marked on the map, they find an elderly goblin wearing a simple tunic and a cooking pot on his head presiding over a set of three tables. The crowd of the streets gives the tables a respectful berth, where a couple of people are thinking, rereadinf little passages of text on the table, and writing in little notebooks. One table holds a wooden box, the second displays a glittering star map of the Exandrian sky, and on the third rests a row of colored bottles. A banner hanging over the setup reads, "Test your wit with me, against these riddles three."

Pondering Drow
One participant in particular catches your attention, as you notice that he already has a medallion from this contest dangling around his neck, but he continues to ponder and scribble in his notebook, occasionally looking up to the third table, then making a note in his book.

He gives your group a quick glance as you step forward, measuring you up and considering your wits, but quickly continues his feverish thinking.

Elder Colbu Kaz
The goblin sitting behind the tables addresses your group as you approach in a slow, raspy, but happily singsongy voice, "Welcome, welcome, approach if you please. Your brain my game will surely tease.

"You can enter altogether, or without your friendly tether. Groups may deliberate amongst themselves, individuals must be quiet as elves.

"2 silver is the cost of a guess, so be sure your hunch is bound for success! Solve two of my riddles to receive the prize, you have an unlimited number of tries!"

Kailani links arms with Tereze and whispers: "Isn't this wonderful? Look at all the different riddles!" Without waiting for an answer she moves from table to table and glances at the intruiging puzzles. She already enjoys herself with this challenge.

"Let's see how our crew does when it comes to thinking, rather than fighting. What say you?" This time she addresses the others with an inviting gesture. To the goblin she turns and puts down enough gold for three guesses.

"An unlimited number we'll hardly need,
we are an ingenious group indeed.
So, good sir, please
let us take part -
with such wonderous riddles,
we can't wait to start!"

The young woman beams with good humour and happily smiles at the game master.

Burping a few times behind his hand, Faelan isn't persuaded that this is really a good idea. Nonetheless he follows the ladies in a slightly swaying step as they walk up to the riddle stand Listening carefully he exchanges looks with the others, before nodding towards his cheerful companion. This challenge they will win together.

Huddling close with his newly found teammates, he opens with: "The first one is easy. Bronze dragons live in the water. So I conclude the shells are a hint for the bronze dragon key."

Looking unconcerned he follows with: "The second one seems to be the two moons we have. Catha and Ruidus.

"But the third one? I have no clue at all."
Faelan admits ruefully. Thinking a bit harder for a few heartbeats, he looks into the faces of the others, if they seem to know what the answer could be.
OOC:
Hope this is okay for everybody. But as a longtime DnD and CR fan the first two seem rather easy for me.

Tereze walks over to look at the star map, appreciating its craftsmanship more than trying to figure out the riddle. The stars had always fascinated her and she knew several constellations off by heart.

Next, she strolls to the potions, her mouth a bit dry from all those pies. She nods a greeting to the the drow, before making her mind up about the bottles.

Finally, she goes to the wooden box and scratches her chin a bit. Walking all around the table to get a good look.

"I think I have a good grasp of this" She says as she circles back around to the group.

Religion Check Puzzle #2 DC13 - (1d20+3)

Mar 29, 2022 6:16 pm
"Easy, huh?" Kailani raises an eyebrow. She moves towards the bottles, crouches down and looks through the different liquids.

The ones with blight, are the ones on the right side of purple - the green ones. They shouldn't take those. Even flasks hold naught but pain, so the white liquid cannot be the right one either...

Neither the first, nor the last bottle is the winning one.

She turns to her teammates, explains her reasoning and whispers, so only they can hear: "I believe it is either the third or the fifth one."
Mar 29, 2022 6:38 pm
Listening to Kailani with growing admiration, the half drow bows his head appreciating her logical mind. Taking the bronze dragon key, he puts it into the box and rotates it curiously if he was right in his assessment of the riddle.
Mar 29, 2022 6:38 pm
"The birds... They're taking about Catha and Ruidus, right?" Tereze says to the goblin, pointing out the two moons nestled in the stars.

She does a brief crossing of her arms in respect to them.

Elder Colbu Kaz
As you approach the tables with an answer, the Elder ricketily stands up from his chair with a smile and removes the pot from his head. A sound louder than it should be rings out as he bongs the pan on his knee.

For Faelen and Tereze, who stand across the table from the Elder, it suddenly seems like you've gone deaf. The din of the raucous city instantly, dizzyingly disappears. Anyone outside that 10ft radius sees everyone within it freeze and remain unmoving, and hear nothing as those within hear the Elder open his mouth and begin to speak, "Have you an answer?"

Drow
The drow leans over to the rest of your group outside the bubble, making sure to hide the contents of his notebook while speaking, "Have no fear, that is simply a way to prevent cheating. It is a magic effect that blocks any light or sound from crossing a boundary around the caster.

"Your team was quite swift with your answers. Should you be correct, I have to say that would be quite impressive."

Faelen picks up the bronze key and inserts it into the box. The sound of lightning and a small shower of magic confetti erupts from the box, a seeming success.

Tereze points to Catha and Ruidus on the map, and the Elder nods approvingly. "I give to you many congratulations, your success is cause for celebrations. For the mental feats your minds have done, this small medallion your party has won." The Elder pulls out a small medallion made of wood, with the shapes of a dragon's head, a constellation, and an overflowing bottle engraved into the front and hands it over to you. The barrier then falls and the rest of the party can now see the medallion in their hands.

"To you, your third fee I now owe, unless you'd still like to give it a go."
[ +- ] Medal of Wit
Mar 30, 2022 4:14 am
As the magical barrier descends around Tereze and Faelen, Calla puzzles over the remaining puzzle. "Third or fifth, third or fifth, third or fifth" she whispers to herself as she bounces back and forth between the bottles, waffling on which to drink. "But sky leaves a stain!" Decided, she leaps at the bottles and downs the fifth, purple bottle in one chug.

"I hope you're right Kailani!" she says, squeezing her eyes shut and bracing for who-knows-what to happen. Also in more than a little discomfort as the liquid added to the volume in her stomach.
Mar 30, 2022 2:50 pm
"Huzzah!" Tereze punches the air with the medal in her hand. "Another victory for.." Hmm. They hadn't really made a team name yet, though they certainly felt like a tight-knit one. "..us" She finishes lamely.

"Say, we'll probably need a team name if we're to sign up for this race later"
Mar 31, 2022 7:26 am
Feeling a bit better, Faelan accepts the medallion and smiles because of Tereze's air punch. As she mentions their freshly formed group has not found a name yet, he too is of the opinion that they should find one. "Let's get one or two more trophies. For all one knows something comes up." he suggests.

Pushing his snow-white hair behind his ears, he glances at the Colbu Kaz and Calla, if Kailani and the harengon had been right with the fifth purple bottle.

Remembering the map from a short while ago, he looks at the others, ask: "And now? I would suggest the tortoises. What do you think?"
Apr 1, 2022 12:27 am
The Elder scrambles quickly and clumsily to bang the pot on his knee again to obscure the correct answer before Calla leaps towards the tables and downs the fifth bottle.

As she swallows the liquid, a warm, pleasant feeling begins to slowly spread out from Calla's stomach all the way to her ears and fingers and toes. The Elder Colbu Kaz smiles and takes the bottle from you, filling it back up with a jug of liquid underneath the table. Before dismissing the magic dome.

When Calla reapparates before the party, they notice that she is, quite literally, glowing. Soft, gentle rays of sunshiny beams of light radiate about 5 feet off of her in every direction. The Elder simply smiles, figuring that whether she guessed correctly was obvious enough. He pulls his bucket back up to his butt and sits down, waiting for the next contestant to approach his riddles.

Hardcore Intellectual Drow
Whether or not the party was positioned to welcome them to the conversation, the graceful, elegant, and handsome drow butts into the conversation once more. "I must admit, your team's cunning seems to be a cut above that of the rest of the people in this backwater. I'd be very interested in testing my wits against yours during the closing ceremony, see that you earn enough medals to be considered to participate."

Without waiting for a response, the drow exits the group's conversation and marches up to the Elder, and emerges moments later from the magic dome, beautifully shining just like Calla. Without a glance towards your party, they disappear into the throng of people walking the streets, only visible by the tiny beams of light rising above the other heads in the crowd.

Kailani congratulates the winners of this event. She is pleased with the outcome. "I think I agree with you, Faelan. And I'm really curious about those tortoises." The young woman isn't necessarily thrilled and rather suspicious. After having learned so much about nature and balance, she is sceptical when it comes to using animals for sport. Maybe tortoises have another meaning to these people and they aren't expected to shoo around giant reptiles? Kailani knows a lot about turtles and not so much about their landbased relatives. Do they actually need to be herded?

While she is picturing what the next contest might look like, the drow challenges them and briskly walks away after. How rude! Kailani briefly stares at the male with a raised eyebrow, then shakes her head and forgets about the incident. To Calla she calls out: "Let's find something I am good at, oh beacon of light!" She winks at the haregon, grins and catches up with the rest of her nameless team.
Apr 1, 2022 5:46 pm
"I'm not sure how agile I can be in this garb, but they're tortoises, so it does not sound that hard" Tereze says confidently.

"I didn't realize there was a entrance requirement to the race later. So I suppose we must at least try!"
Apr 2, 2022 3:17 pm
"I am starting to feel better, that tonic set me aglow inside and out! Let’s herd some shells!"

Calla gives a little quizzical look at Tereze’s armor, "That does look a bit bulky… Hope it’s easier than back home, it’s so hard to get ‘em from tree to tree…"
Apr 3, 2022 7:29 am
"Well, we'll need to see the setup first. Maybe agility isn't important." Kailani scratches her head. "Horizonback tortoises are huge, a bit like walking mountains ... so the babies should still be impressive. It is said, that they are smart as well, so maybe we can sweet-talk them into following us." The young woman produces a toothy grin towards Tereze.

She then moves up to Calla. "Glad you're feeling better. So what exactly do you get from tree to tree? Armors or tortoises?"

Finally, after some time spent solving riddles and drinking strange potions, the group's bloatedness and lethargy begin to subside. The holy aura of radiant light surrounding Calla fades after a couple minutes of strolling the streets towards the next exciting destination.

The group emerges from the cramped streets into the shoreside park in the center of downtown. Countless festivalgoers are clustered around the paddock full of young horizonback tortoises that are shuffling around inside the enclosure. The fifteen-foot-tall tortoises are being tended by young herders, who are fitting them with makeshift bridles. These individuals are overseen by a tall, orc who makes sure the bridles are attached correctly.

Orcish Tortoise Trainer
The orc waves at you approaching and says with a smile, "Have y'all come to join in on the horizonback migration? There’s a tortoise for each of you, and a medal to be won if you make it to the end in one piece.

"Last year we had to rebuild three houses after the festival! Heh, we'll be starting in just a few minutes so go on an' git prepared."
Apr 3, 2022 3:49 pm
The tall orc certainly makes an impression on Kailani, who feels a blush appearing on her cheeks. "So how does one prepare, exactly?" She steps closer and greets the man with a firm handshake. "I'm Kailani Hauaka and I usually only deal with turtles." Then she looks at the animals assessingly. "Do we choose or does the tortoise choose us?"
Apr 3, 2022 6:01 pm
Orcish Tortoise Trainer
The orc kindly, appreciatively returns Kailani's handshake with all the strength expected someone who works with their hands all day everyday training and tending to 15-foot tall tortoises, with a little extra in there for being an orc.

He looks deeply into Kailani's eyes and in a dramatic, passionate voice says, "You cannot decide your fate, you must give yourself over to what destiny has planned for you." He puts a hand over his heart, "You must forget the outside world and follow your heart's truest... desires-" he can't finish his sentence as he begins chuckling a hearty laugh.

"Sorry, ha. It was just too cheesy of a line and I took an acting class this spring, I had to take advantage of it. But in all seriousness, if the tortoise don't try to eat you as you approach it, then you better hop on quick. That's the closest to being chosen you'll git."

"Do you have any.. gentler ones?" Tereze asks, a tinge of nervousness in her voice. She didn't like the prospect of getting chomped. That usually happened the other way around.

Kailani listens, then laughs kindly at the trainer. "My, my...you sure think you're funny, no? Well which one would you recommend then, Mister tortoise trainer slash actor?" She pulls off a smile that is equal parts flirtatious and mischievious and chooses one of the tortoises to herd. "How 'bout you then? You seem nice enough", she addresses the overgrown reptile and pats it amicably.
Apr 3, 2022 7:22 pm
As the half-orc mentions just to approach and hope Ardeth give a wink and a grin. 'Don't get eaten, got it. Easy. She goes towards one of the tortoise. Her movements start as the speedy excited ones everyone is useful, but quickly slow as again the bard seems to gain height, and this time bulk as well, the cloak stretching over the noticeably bigger body that stretches a hand out as they slowly approach a tortoise.

'Easy there fella. Now I need you ta let me on ya back. I'll be gentle, promise. ' The voice is gruff and masculine, yet not threatening. calming almost, in a weird way.

Relieved that he does not have to be the fastest, but that it is enough to reach the finish line, Faelan draws new courage.

If possible, he looks at the animals up close. Like the tavern, he muses.

When the fighter comes to one that he likes the most, he stops in front of her and feeds her a little. Although Faelan has absolutely no idea what turtles eat. The Rhosanian quickly checks the fit of his blades so that he doesn't lose any in the competition and is then ready to take part.

He smiles at Tereze, "‘Fraid not. But just approach ‘em from the side of their shell slowly, you should be able to jump out the way ‘fore she can snap ya if she tries."
Apr 5, 2022 8:36 pm
After half listening to the Tortoise Trainer’s instructions while marveling at the size of the creatures, Calla spots a medium sized tortoise to the side of the group she likes the look of. With a yell and a grin she takes a leap and lands on its back with a heavy whomp.

"Lot bigger than we have at home! Couldn’t get these up into the trees!"
Apr 5, 2022 9:55 pm
Tereze looks at the tortoises skeptically, but trusting the man, moves towards the quietest one, following his instructions carefully.

"Ah, right. That wasn't so bad" She beams atop her new mount
Apr 6, 2022 9:23 am
Smiling at Calla because of her artistic performance, the half drow climbs - rather sure footed - on top of the tortoise himself. Giving Tereze a thumbs up and sharing her optimism for the moment, Faelan shifts his gaze back to the animal and looks especially for hand holds or things to guide the huge beast.

Orcish Tortoise Trainer
After a while of everyone fumbling with the equipment and trying to figure out how to ride a 15-foot tall tortoise, everyone has finally gotten situated enought to begin. The orcish trainer expertly and practicedly leaps to the top of his tortoise and steers it to the gate of the paddock. All other business in the streets has stopped as one of the biggest attractions for the Festival is about to begin. The fence around the paddock and every street in sight is lined with cheering people as a good 15 or 20 participants prepare for the migration.

The trainer's deep voice booms over the crowd, even the tortoises turn their grazing heads to him as he speaks, "Alright! The annual Newborn Horizonback Tortoise Migration is about to begin! All you gotta do is guide 'em to the rice paddies on the outskirts of town. Do your best to not raze the city on your way outta town!

"Hiya!"
he yells as he and his tortoise go striding off down the all-too-crowded streets.

And with his words, all of the tortoises spring into a surprising and probably somewhat unsettling speed loosely following the trainer, but very quickly forget what they are doing and begin constantly trying to veer off in random directions amidst all of the excitement. People cheering and lining the streets do not seem to care to move until a tortoise is nearly upon them, then resume cheering immediately afterwards. Kobold and goblin children laugh and snicker as they zip around beneath the tortoises' feet and in front of their faces. People from every direction hold colorful cloth or fresh food to try to distract the tortoises. It is truly mayhem.
OOC:
To make it to the rice paddies on the outskirts of town, you need a total of 3 successful Animal Handling checks.
The DC for these checks begins at 12 and increases by 1 for each check thereafter.

On a failed check, the tortoise tries to buck the character from its back. The character must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or fall from the tortoise and take 1d6 bludgeoning damage. On a successful check, the character doesn’t fall and can try to maneuver the tortoise again.

After a failed saving throw, a character can mount their tortoise by succeeding on a DC 15 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. If this check fails, the belligerent tortoise makes a Bite attack against the character (+7 to hit, 3d6+4 bludgeoning damage). You can then try the Acrobatics check again, but it attempts to bite you again and again if you keep failing.

Once mounted on the tortoise again, a character can continue trying to move the tortoise along by making another Wisdom (Animal Handling) check as described above.

Feel free to use any spells, features, anything you have at your disposal. You can give up at any time if the dice gods are giving you the stink eye. If you're unsure how a feature or something might affect your rolls, ask in the discord and I'll try to be speedy in my response!

A Nat 20 on an Animal Handling check will count as 2 successes, and a Nat 20 on anything else gives you advantage on your next Animal Handling check.

'There we go fella. Let just keep going on like that and we'll both be relaxing and eating in no time.' The gruff yet gentle voice continues speaking to the tortoise as the bard starts to guide it. As it moves the rocking motions cause the hood to fall from their head, revealing that Ardeth , or the one using that name, is no longer a half drow but a full blooded orc, that while looking slightly tough seems to have a gentle looking in his eyes as he guides the creature.

'Hey not the the kid, not the kid. ' There is a briefly moment of panic ass he tries to tug the tortoise to a halt as a child runs under its feat, something the tortoise is not best pleased of as he tries to shake him off for a few moments.

'Hey now, hey. I'm sorry. I know, I know I was rough. Just got ta watch out for little ones. Let's try this again shall we?' He pats the tortoise for the a few moments making sure it calms down, before starting maneuvreing again, being sure to be more gentle in his directions, and heading towards the paddies with no more issues.

Despite the sudden unexpected rush, Tereze sets off with confidence, and things appear to be going well. She smiles at her companions astride her.

However, a few lengths in, her mount starts to have stronger opinions about where they should go - and bucks violently, throwing Tereze into the air!

Tereze slams against the hard shell, brusing her side harshly. She attempts to climb up the beast but it snaps down with a cruel beak, creating a searing gash through her armor.

A second, weaker attempt to stay aloft fails and the beast fully flings her to the ground, and continues off in its own direction.

Tereze shields her face as the large beasts stampede over her
She luckily remains intact, but without a mount, a wheelbarrow full of injuries and a strong feeling she should have listened to her gut and stayed at the sidelines.

She limps off of the track to tend to her wounds.

In ad midst all this chaos and mayhem, Faelan stands tall on the shifting tortoise shell and tries to steer his mount along the noisy street. To his left and right the animals veer off, but an especially large animal holds right in front of him. Placing his weight a little different the half drow manages to bring his mount to turn just enough left not to crash into the stopping giant.

Breathing out, as the situation behind him dissolves in even more chaos he aims for the corridor to the rice fields and nearly falls off, as his turtle crushes a cart and drag along the remains for a short distance. Finding his equilibrium again, he re firms his grip on the reins and spurs his tortoise on.

Coming up to the sight of the rice paddy, he yells euphorically: "Come on stubby! We do this together!" already hefting his gaze on the finish line.

What then ensues, resembles more a rodeo than a race. Suddenly "Stubby" stops and begins shaking and buckles strongly. Doing his best to stay on top, Faelan shows some promise as he is able to hold on for a short while, before going down for the first time. But deftly rolling to the side, the fighter doesn't get bit by the offended tortoise.

A second try back at the top ends after a few heartbeats on the hard ground again. Standing up and patting dust from his cloak, the Roshanian spits out some dirt and tests his skill and endurance a third time.

Running the shell up, he grips the reins with determination. The fighter FINALLY succeeds in bringing the animal under his controll again and leading it to the waterflooded fields. "You stubborn bastard, I will take good care before calling you names again." the noble whispers proudly to his mount, before patting it on the side.

Jumping off from this elevated position, Faelan raises a hand in triumph and strolls over to Ardeth's cloak, now worn by an Orc. Greeting the "stranger" with an victourios smile and an "Excellent job, Ardeth." remark. Then the half-drow turns and lets his gaze wander to look out for the rest of their team.

Kailani does not realise that some of her teammates struggle to get their tortoises to the finishing line. Her tortoise and her simply follow the handsome orc through the city. The young woman concentrates on his toned back and his grin whenever he turns around - and so does her tortoise - well it is possible the animal is more interested in the other tortoises backside. Whether it is this high degree of focus on Kailani's part, her experience with animals or her mares sensitivity regarding her rider - the noise and commotion all around them do not distract the two from their goal. They reach the fields in good time and Kailani thanks and praises her tortoise, before she takes leave of the formidable animal.

"Well, it seems I know how to pick 'em" Kailani grins and claps the young orc's muscular arm once. Then she gets up on her toes and tries to spot her friends. To her surprise, they are not behind her. She takes a few steps back, stretches again and finally sees Ardeth and waves her hand towards him. "Ardeth! Hey! Where is everybody?" A worried undertone seeps into her voice. Where are Faelan and Tereze? Where is Calla? After a drawn out moment, she breathes more easily. "Faelan! Over here!" She waits until the drow has dismounted the tortoise. He seems equally scuffed and proud as he says his goodbyes and makes his way to this incarnation of the bard.

She claps Faelan on the shoulder. "Here you are, my elegant friend. Seems you've had a rough ride?" Kailani looks him up and down and pats some dust away in an amiable fashion. "Quite an achievement for a city dweller like yourself!" The smaller woman winks and gives him an enthusiastic thumps-up, before she asks him, whether he knows where Tereze and Calla are.

"Nothing I couldn't handle" the half drow replies with an understatemant to both the ladies and their simular observation. A bit dirty, but fare from being hurt, Faelan is rather proud to have succeded. Kailanis praise seems to let him grow a finger or two higher.

Looking out for the rest of the group, the noble stays silent in his small triumph.

Tereze slowly rejoins the group on foot. Covered in bruises and blood running from various cuts over her body.

"I don't know what I was thinking... I can't even ride horses that well, nevermind these giant creatures"

She places a hand on a purple bruise on her arm and with a glowing light, it fades away. Tereze considers some of the drops of blood that have dripped onto her hand and instinctively raises it to her mouth and tastes it. Suddenly realising she's in company, she quickly puts it down and tries to steer the conversation.

"Anyone else need some patching up?"

"I fell off and when I tried to get back on, the beast kept snapping and tossing me about!" Tereze fumes, but appreciates the concern and takes a seat on a nearby bench and a small sip of the flask.

"Thank you, Mmm!" She pipes as the liquid hits her tongue. What is that? It's nice!" She didn't usually opt for anything other than wine, but it was something to take her mind off the pain - she didn't expect it to be some tasty!

Calla's tortoise matches her springy, bouncy attitude a little too much. It dashes, then twirls, then gets distracted, then dashes, then stops to admire a flower, then scratches its shell on a rickety house, then ambles mozily through the streets for a second, then dashes again. Calla struggles to even get its attention for the majority of the ride, being thrown about and around like a ball down a twisty rabbit hole. Finally, Calla gets the beast's attention and guides it quickly through the crowded streets, trying to move it as quickly as possible before it gets distracted again.

Finally, after taking three shortcuts and then four laps around the entire city, Calla and her tortoise arrive at the rice paddies with everyone else.

"Thank you everyone" Tereze smiles to Ardeth, her fangs fully visible since relaxing and becoming comfortable with the group. "I will be fine, I have some power still left in me should I need it. I might need to conserve it for later"

"Ah, Calla's here too!" She says, spotting them approaching and gives her a wave.

As the group comes together, Faelan is taken aback for a moment by Aredeths swift change of height and weight. These people! Shaking his head, he looks at Calla as she comes up, before smiling once more. "You took the scenic route?" he teases the harengon girl in a friendly manner. "If we would have to wait any longer, we would be hungry again." the halfdrow jests with a wink.

The massive crowds holler and cheer as the last final participants finally reach the rice paddies outside of town. All in all, another successful migration for this year's newborn horizonback tortoise litter.

Call Me Adazi
The orcish tortoise trainer stands at the corner of the rice paddies, clapping and banging on his chest in celebration as each tortoise rider emerges from the city streets. After the last one, he calls everyone together, brandishing a heft of necklaces made of leather and tortoise shells, teeth, scales, and nails. He raises the handful of celebratory necklaces over his head and yells out to the participants and the crowd behind them, Congradulations to this year's winners! Looks like nearly everyone made it here in one piece, and only one building has had major structural damage this year! Certainly a good cause for celebration.

"Here're your prizes, made of bits from ol' Miss Priscilla, who passed of old age last year, I believe this is how she would've wanted to be remembered."
he says as he adorns Ardeth, Calla, Kailani, Faelen, and a few other random participants each with a necklace. "Please, one more round of applause everybody!"

Receiving his prize with joy, Faelan requires a second to take a closer look at the toe from Mrs. Priscilla he only just got. The noble sways his head in macabre amusement before turning to the others. "Nice necklace." he grins at Kailani, as he perceives her with her piece of Mrs Priscilla.

Smiling at the festival crowd he holds his over his head for everybody to see. What a good day to win for a contest he muses while his eyes glance over the countless people of Jigow.

Coming down to Tereze, the noble turns to their group and asks: "And now? What's next? Somebody who wants to swim? I will refrain from that one. The arm-wresteling isn't for me either. But maybe the Maze?

What are your plans?"
Apr 11, 2022 10:05 pm
'I mean even if we don't win arm wrestling is fun. I can be strong, sometimes. ' Ardeth flexes a very unimpressive arm. 'I don't think I can swim though...I'll give it a go anyway!

"I reckon we could best some casual competition" Tereze agrees, wiggling her fingers. "I've heard the technique matters just as much as the players' strength" she adds, reassuringly.

With most of the party victorious in that last contest, they stroll through the busy streets over to the next event. Passersby, especially children and farming folk, notice and smile at the new bling around their necks. Seems like those prizes in particular are rather recognizable amongst the residents of this town.

Not far from where it looks like the swimming competition will be taking place later, a maze has been constructed out of five-foot-tall walls of wooden planks lashed together with ropes and propped up between sandbags. Banners are hung over the openings to the maze, signifying the entrance and the exit. The passageways of the maze are five feet wide. Off to the side, a large, tan-feathered aarakocra sits on a chair thirty feet above the ground, giving him a vantage point where he can see the whole area. Unexpectedly, the aarakocra suddenly leaps from their watchtower, swoops down into the maze, and a moment later arrives at the entrance to the maze with a cursing goblin in its clutches. The aarakocra drops the goblin off gently on the ground and immediately returns to its post, and the goblin stomps off angrily into the crowd. A small crowd is cheering on and heckling the people inside.

Ogre
Near the entrance, a massive 12-foot tall ogre in leather armor is encouraging a reluctant 3 and a half foot tall goblin in a breastplate with the symbol of the Luxon engraved and painted on the front to give the maze a try.

"Oh, c'mon Dermot. For me? You know I'm not allowed to give it a go.

"I know you're nervous but I think you can do it, I really do."

Dermot
The goblin's face is nothing but anxiously furrowed eyebrows and a sweaty forehead as he wrings his hands with a small polyhedral religious symbol bouncing around in his grasp.

"No no no, I just know I'm gonna run into a dead end, like, right away immediately. It's not worth the silver, I just know I'm not gonna make it.

"Nah, it's okay, let's just move on to the next one, Galsariad said the puzzles were pretty easy."

The ogra kneels down, "Here, I think I have figured it out, I can help you study before you go in. I really think you can do it. C'mon." The goblin looks unconvinced and nervous still.

Winking at passerbies and letting children touch his newly won bling, Faelan strolls through the town to the opening of the maze, orientating himself on the colorful flags. Grabbing a drink, the halfdrow wets his throat with a quick beverage, before arriving at the next challenge.

Seeing the dark-feathered aarakocra, he raises an eyebrow in appreciation of the rules and all the thought that have flown into them.

Turning around he justs wants to discuss with the group, who wants to complete what, when Tereze's remark shifts his attention to the unequal couple. Listening for a few seconds, the fighter nods at the white haired woman, shortens the distance and greets the two: "Light be with you.

My friends and I are new in town. We want to try our skill and luck with the maze next. Maybe we can help each other?"
Smiling an open smile, Faelan is ready to help the goblin, if he or the ogre can support them in any way at this challenge.

The goblin is surprised at the group's offer of help.

"Oh, uh the Light be with you as well, heh. I appreciate the offer but I dont think I can do this one, I think I am going to-"

Soft-Spoken Ogre
He is cut off gently as the ogre woman stands back up to her full, towering height and in a soft, but deep and grumbly voice, "I will cover the charge for your attempt, Dermot. I think you will be proud of yourself when you do it successfully."

She turns to the whole group as she begins heading towards the entrance, "I'm pretty certain I've figured the maze out. Here, if you help my friend Dermot see that he can do this, I'll tell you what I think is the way through the maze."

The small goblin does not move towards the maze with the ogre, stuck in place.

Although Kailani is already excited about the swimming contest, she throws the handsome tortoise trainer a kiss - she might try to find him later at the festivities to get more insights in the fascinating profession - and follows her friends. So a maze, huh? She has never found mazes that interesting and trapsing towards a dead end never seems much fun, but she is part of a team now and she will do her part.

Kailani eyes the entrance of the maze suspiciously as she listens to the strangers' conversation. The young woman then steps towards the goblin and smiles encouragingly: "Hi, there. Dermot, is it? Light be with you. I am Kailani and I agree with Faelan here." She taps Faelan's chest for emphasis, but keeps looking at the worried little fellow. "We sure could use your help. I am not a great fan of mazes myself, but I am certain together we can crack this puzzle. We'll find our way through this maze just as the light finds its way through the darkness." Kailani raises her fist towards the maze and exclaims: "Let's do this. Let's show this town what we're made of!" Energetically she extends her arm in the direction of the goblin with an open hand to see if he accepts her invitation. "What say you, Dermot of the Light?"

She then turns away from the maze to look back at her goblin friend, hoping that everyone is able to convince him.

With nearly the whole group's encouragement, the anxiousness twisting his face finally gives way as he closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, clutches the symbol of the Luxon in both hands, and begins walking towards the maze.

"Right, it's just some fun, and I can't win if I don't try. Gotta just try. Maggie, show me what you see, please."

Watching everyone else canter in one at a time, Calla waits her turn before slapping three silver into the right hands and setting out herself. Passing through the maze threshold, the green hedges remind her so intensely of her home.

She's reminded of the dense wind-whispering canopy and the verdant, impassable foliage surrounding her village. Like a globe of greenery, it kept the village safe and isolated - with the villagers trapped inside. Or at least Calla had felt trapped. As a leveret she'd spent countless hours finding secret trails into the forest, heedless of the leader's orders to stay put. The paths had led to abandoned homesteads, hidden towers, and magical glades dotted with pixies and glowing glyphs, but until she had been drawn to the rabbit hole that dropped her here, it had never lead her out. And now here she was. Wherever 'here' happens to be.

Her hand turns the coin in her pocket over and over as she's lost in her own thoughts, with a frown between her eyes and her ears drooping. With a jolt, she stumbles out the maze's other side and back into the crowded festival without having hardly paid attention to the maze itself. A quick shake, a rueful grin, then she hops off to rejoin her newfound friends. "Are we off for a swim now?"

At this point in the afternoon, the sun is now getting to its hottest spot in these few hours before sunset, just in time for the Ifolon Plunge event! From the exit of the maze, the group can see just down the road a bit the dock where people are beginning to gather for the start of this event. As the party travels deeper into the Meatwaters (the area of Jigow of docks, businesses, and houses perched along the souterhn edge of the city, the banks of the Ifolon River), and near the center of activity, they can feel an air of tension gripping the crowd.

Numerous people are gathered on the piers, arguing among themselves and venting their ire at a grizzled orcish woman, who responds to their anger with a simple wizened and amused expression.

Water Genasi Woman
Suddenly, a brash voice cuts through the chatter, and a blue-skinned woman pushes her way through the crowd and stands protectively in front of the old orc, yelling, "She’s not gonna say it again! If you’re here with a team, only one member of your team can participate in the challenge! The rules are clear, and if you can’t handle it, get off the pier!" After just a couple of seconds, small groups of people begin to quietly murmur among themselves.

She adds in "Now come on, everybody. It's almost time to get this thing going!" before exchanging a nod of respect to the old orc woman behind her, then walking back over to a familiar-looking drow, the drow man the party met at the Riddles and Rhymes contest.

Galsariad
The drow and the genasi exchange a few terse words, which any of you with a higher passive perception catch the end of.

"Allow me to cast it. It would increase your odds tremendously and it's not that large of an expenditure of effort on my part."

The genasi refuses, "No. I want to win this on my own."

"Oh! Aw, Kailani!" Calla looks up at Kailani with giant eyes that are a little moist around the edges, "D-d-don't mind me! The maze, all that greenery, that's what my home looks like! You know, I end up just where I want to be and yet I end up gettin' all misty eyed -- wait what is that?"

The team had been walking toward the water but, suddenly distracted when the blue skinned woman pushes her way to front, Calla bounds closer to the river's edge for a better look, any cloud of gloom instantly dispelled by her newest fascination. "What kind of person is that? Her skin is like water?!" Calla says, staring perhaps a little rudely but unable to help herself.
Apr 19, 2022 10:20 am
Observing Ardeth's everchanging body, the halfdrow inquires: "Does your strength and endurance change with your appearance? Would you like capture the last medallion for our group?" Indicating at the festival he continues: "It seems we are invited to the closing ceremony anyways, but if you want to, then please, for the light - have fun and bring honor to our fellowship." Smiling encouraging, the fighter holds up his three prices and winks at the versatile woman.

Leading their small group further to the next challenge, he grins sympathetically at the drow as his proposal for magical aid is negated. Winning is everything, Faelan understands. Mockingly wiggling his index finger, he winks at the drow and glances sideways at the water-genasi-woman as shared joke with the elf.

Next, wishing Kaliani the best of luck, the noble would take part of her equipment to ease her burden for the competition and promenades to the spectators ranks to attain seats, where they could follow the contest. Looking at Calla while sitting down, he answers: "A genasi as it seems. A person with elemental blood in her veins." Feeling a little concerned that this could be too much for his friend to overcome, Faelan stays silent and watches tensely, awaiting the start of the swim-duel.

Galsariad
The drow merely shrugs and just barely rolls his eyes at Ardeth, then grins back at Faelen.

As the genasi woman begins heading towards the starting line, the drow wanders over next to the group and speaks softly and elegantly to Ardeth, "It's a simple contest with simple rules. Swim out, grab the rusty spear, swim back, and be the first to place it in the elder's palm. Using one's skills in one field to solve an obstacle in another is simply problem-solving. Seems like a shape-shifter like yourself should understand, I'm sure that comes in handy."

Genasi
The genasi notices Calla's fascinated stares and seems only slightly discomforted by them.

With a big-whoop expression, she says "Yes, I am blue-skinned, and you've got fur. Now, politely, I ask that you look elsewhere, I am trying to get in the zone for this race."

As Falen asks he question the changeling shakes their head and shifts again, back into the orc. 'Sadly not friend. At least not much. This is my old resemblance, but I am not as strong as I used to be. I will stay an cheer for Kailani as friends should.

Veliath
As Galsariad approaches the haughty drow makes her reappearance. 'One's own skills yes. Not someone else's. Everything I do is by my own merit. Your friend seems to agree. A win with someone else help is not true.'

Just to be clear, the only requirement in this contest is that you have to swim, the winner is the first to get the spear back to the orc adjudicator, and no interference from anyone outside the water is allowed.
The din of the crowd begins to cheer as the orc approaches the edge of the dock and the rest of the competitors step to the edge of the pier, pulling back their hair and pulling up their sleeves in preparation. Including Kailani, there are a total of 5 contestants in the race: the water genasi woman, a tall and lanky half-orc man, a stubby male goblin, and a beefy looking human woman. About 75 feet out from the pier, floating and bobbing amongst the choppy water, is a small raft with a rusty-looking spear lodged into the top.
[ +- ] The Meta Rules!
Elder Ushru
The old orcish woman holds a weak hand above her head and the crowd silences in anticipation, the only sound is the birds squawking above and the waves crashes below.

Time seems to stretch on for eternity.

Seconds turn to minutes.

Until finally she rapidly brings her arm back down to her side, and all of the contestants leap into the water and the crowd goes wild once again.

Our first Map!
OOC:
Kailani is up first! I'm assuming Kailani is just going to dash towards the spear on her turn, but let me know if you have any special things you want to try out. Kailani has a swimming speed of 40, so she can reach the spear on her turn if she uses her action to dash, but needs to roll an athletics check to see if she can go at full speed in these choppy waters! For now I have placed her at the spear in the map above, but that would be the end of her turn.

For everyone who's not Kailani, feel free to continue RPing, and if you'd like to try to rile up the crowd to support Kailani or something, if someone can succeed on a DC15 Persuasion check, I'll give Kailani a d6 of Bardic Inspiration!

"Come on Kailani!" Tereze yells, her voice standing out from the crowd with a quick cast of Thaumaturgy. "You've got this!"

After the short moment of clarity, her cheers merge into the rest of the crowd once more, but the people around her appear to be swayed somewhat by her passionate support.

The cheering crowd, the competitors, even her friends faded into the background as Kailani stepped to the edge of the pier. She felt instantly mesmerized by the body of water, felt its pull and promise. The young woman could only hear the sounds beneath for a few seconds - the steady ocean static. She saw the deep, deep dark - the all encompassing element and lost herself in its summons. This was a true part of her nature - the sea and its secrets, some of which it had shared with the Ashari. She feels blessed by the sea, and by her ...

It is only when Tereze hollers in a surprisingly powerful voice that Kailani snapped back and realized she was about to compete. Her friends counted on her to give her best. She immediately felt a burning enthusiasm as she elegantly flung herself into the ocean. Underwater she dashed towards the spear, but got blindsided by a sudden powerful current diverting her path to victory.

The crowd cheers and hollers and claps and screams as the contestants all dive into the water. And boy oh boy, is it rough watching the participants struggle against the increasingly choppy waves, as if the river itself had some kind of visceral reaction to the swimmers jumping in.

Kailani feels the terrible impact of each wave and underhanded current, but also feels a gentle guiding force pushing at her hands and feet, helping her glide into first place near immediately. The genasi woman keeps a good pace, fist-fighting each wave that comes her way with the willpower of a starving predator, but just cannot keep up with Kailani at the moment.

Kailani finally reaches the raft, but climbing aboard the bobbing raft provides no respite from the intensity of the waves. The other contestants notice that they are losing quickly and all begin to direct themselves toward Kailani.

The genasi and goblin women quickly move in the path of Kailani to cut off her path back to the pier. They dive below the waves and attempt to grab the spear out of her hands, but Kailani sees them coming and dodges their efforts with graceful underwater twirls and swirls. But, while Kailani is dodging, she notices two shadows quickly dart from deep below up to the swimmers near the surface.

The other two contestants stop before reaching Kailani, trying to anticipate where she plans to swim and intercept her. But they suddenly both begin yelling and screaming. The human woman yelps and is instantly yanked under the surface of the water.

On the bank of the river Calla finally sits still for a moment - she can't quite make out what's happening in the water anymore, but there appears to be a commotion of some sort. For the first time she takes stock of herself and realizes she's in worse shape than she thought - "Must have been wrangling that dumb turtle," she grumbles to herself, groaning as she prods her ribs where the worst of the bite had hit. "Um, Tereze, what can I do to patch myself up a lil bit? I think I got it worse than I initially thought - it hurts here, and here and well everywhere!" She says to the cleric with a baleful look.

Now something needed to be done for the other contestants struggling to return in one piece.

Needing a heartbeat to comprehend what is happening in the water, the half-drow springs up from his seat and leans above the barrier to see what is going on. Kailani, who is swimming victourisly against the tide, doesn't seem to be in any danger at the moment, but the human isn't as lucky.

Sparing his friend a glance, the fighter decides, that she doesn't need his help at the moment. Instead of guarding her, he grabs a knife seemingly out of thin air, and in one dexterous motion throws it at the shark that was attacking the swimmer. A narrow trail of smoking darkness accompanies the flight of the blade. This may not be enough to kill the animal, but maybe to scare it away.

@Seajay, be sure to take note of that healing to Calla from Tereze :)

So, the wording of the whole getting pushed 15 feet back isn't entirely clear as to *when* the pushing back happens, so we'll say that whatever you're intended destination is, you end up 15 feet back from there.
As the rallies of the crowd slowly turn into confused whispers of what was that? and somewhat panicked mumbles of was that a shark? and where'd the human go?, Kailani notices the arrivale of the sharks and swims out wide to avoid them. But only finds even stronger currents and choppier waves the farther she gets from shore. She sticks her hand out from below the surface of the water to place the rusty spear in the orc's hand, and finds the spear taken from her grasp.

In a fit of celebration, Kailani raises her head above water, only to find that she is, in fact, still quite a distance from the pier, and notices as the genasi winks at her with a sly smirk, then begins attempting to finish the race herself.

The goblin sees that the shark isn't focused on her, and immediately swims as fast as she can towards the closest pier, completely giving up on the contest. The human and half-orc continue to struggle against the underwater threats, and a deep crimson haze begins spreading out from them in the water, like a squid's ink cloud. They both manage to wrench themselves free and swim to the pier, quickly being pulled up onto the dock by anyone within arm's reach. The human has a massive bite mark on her leg, while the half-orc has one just as big on the side of his hip. Many people rush to their side, appplying pressure to the wounds and whatnot, but it doesn't seem there is a trained healer in the crowd.

With the sharks' main prey out of the water now, the sharks begin to turn towards the last few contestants in the water...

OOC:
Kailani is only 15 feet away from the pier, so she does not have to roll an Athletics check (of course, on one she succeeded lol). Plus, even with halved speed, she still has a 20-foot swimming speed, so that works out perfectly.

I will roll this saving throw now, but in the future, I encourage you guys to roll saving throws for spells and whatnot for the enemies yourselves, so that you and other players after you can immediately know if they succeeded or not, and can act accordingly. In regular fights, I will provide their stats, but I didn't think to in this one. :)

Both Kailani and the genasi are only at 2 levels of exhaustion, which only provides half speed and disadvantage on ability checks. So her saving throw for suggestion is just a straight roll.

[EDIT] Doh! She was so close, I really wanted the genasi to win lmao ;)
Look! Gullible is Written on the Ceiling!
The genasi finishes winking, and before she can speed off towards the finish, Kailani weaves her magic. The genasi responds in a confused but agreeable manner, "Good thinking, here!" She tosses the rusty spear to Kailani, then begins heading off to the pier, before stopping dead in her tracks.

She turns back around just as Kailani grabs the spear with shocked, but respectful half-smile half-scowl, "Oh, you little-!"

Just a small satisfied grin and Kailani closes the distance between her and the pier with confident movements. She draws herself onto the wooden planks, then raises the spear in triumph. The judge takes the old throwing weapon and Kailani sits down, legs over the edge of the pier, to catch her breath.

The adrenaline fades and the young woman quickly feels the biting cold of the air against her wet skin and hair. The water - warm and tempting - calls to her, but then she remembers her friends, the crowd and the sharks. Where are the predators? Have they turned to more open waters? And where are her friends?

She glances to the sea, then to the crowd.
Apr 28, 2022 4:56 pm
The genasi follows after Kailani with panicked fury, from both the incoming sharks and the threat of losing the contest, but Kailani pulls ahead and leaps victoriously (though exhausted) onto the pier. The spear is placed in the orcish elder's hand, and the crowd erupts. Things were a little dicey there for a moment, but with Tereze's magical aid, it looks like everyone will be alright.

The sharks, whether giving up on finding more prey around in the area or simply falling to the strong current themselves, retreat to the depths below and farther out to sea. The rest of Kailani's new group stands on the pier, with Tereze over helping the wounded.

The orc congratulates Kailani on her victory, her safe return, and her cleverness, then ceremonially places around her neck a medallion made of sea glass, which has seemingly been magically crafted into the shape of a conch shell. The crowd cheers, then slowly begins to disperse, gossipping in excited whispers about the shark attack and the brutal conditions of the water.

During the ceremony, the genasi storms off to the back of the crowd, and only afterwards approaches the party again. She wears an honest smile, but it's still tinged with anger.

"I'll be honest, really thought I had that one in the bag, being a water genasi and all. Never seen anyone give it their all like that, 'cept for myself, of course.

"Where'd you learn to swim like that?"

After all the competitors are save and Tereze has tended to the wounded, Faelan hurries to Kailanis side and quickly draps a blanket over her dripping shoulders, to make her more comfortable after this close contest in the cold water. Smiling broadly at her, the half drow congratulates to the hard earned triumph and then takes the woman's hand and raises it high into the sky while whooping to celebrate her victory.

Letting go off her hand, the fighter turns to the genasi woman and listens for a moment.

aquafina says:

"Where'd you learn to swim like that?"
Kailani stands up and pulls the warm blanket tighter around her shoulders, grateful for Faelan's mindfulness. Unsmiling she asks: Why compete at all, if you're that sure? Where is the fun in that?" She turns to Ayo, the genasi, then lets her serious stare melt away into something a lot more friendly. "I am from one of the islands of Anamn. I was born to the water. I do, however, enjoy your city so far. It is our first festival. Will you compete in other events?"
May 1, 2022 2:41 pm
Calla whoops as Kailani makes it back to the group victorious before Ayo approaches again.

A little abashed at being told off earlier for staring, Calla pointedly avoids looking her way and pretends to be engrossed in watching the crowd. Conspicuously, her ears are rotated backward toward Kailani and the genasi woman, clearly eavesdropping.

Ayo Jabe
"I enjoy competition either way, even if I know the competition is no match."

"Huh, I've lived most my life in the Emerald Gulch, was born out on the sea too, but I don't even know where that is. You must've come a long way to be here in Jigow."

"And ha, yeah you could say that."
Ayo reaches into pockets under her cloak and fishes out a clump of medallions, one from nearly every contest your group has participated in. "Well, I haven't seen any other teams with as many medallions as you guys, besides ourselves. There's a pretty good chance we'll see each other in the final ceremony. I'm looking forward to balancing our records then." She smiles confidently and heads off into the crowd.

The handsome drow man smiles and inclines his head as he leans over towards Kailani, "Smart move with the Suggestion spell. I will remember that trick should we find ourselves opposing each other at this festival's finale." With that, he turns and follows Ayo's footsteps away from the pier and into the city.
May 3, 2022 7:15 pm
Kailani hints at a curtsy with a look of a cat that ate the canary. Then returns to her friends. She takes a moment to gather her things, dry and clothe herself and catch a breath. She still feels her muscles from the exhausting exercise, but readily ignores them as she hears music coming from somewhere in the city. The festival is going on, people are crowding the streets. Busy vendors, actors, musicians - there is a whole lot more to explore.

Once more her happy go lucky self, Kailani slips her arm through Calla's and bumps her hip grinning: "Come, there is much to be gained still." She throws her infectious smile to all of her friends and starts to walk back towards the noise, naturally taking the haregon with her. The young woman takes a last longing look in the direction of the promising sea, then slightly shakes her head and asks Faelan enthusiastically: "Are you coming? I'll cheer for you and you'll surely win the next contest!"
May 4, 2022 6:25 pm
Raising an eyebrow sceptically, Faelan has absolut no intention of partaking in the arm-wrestling contest. Following the women to the next stage, he is nonetheless very curious how this festival unfolds further.
May 5, 2022 1:26 pm
The group departs from the pier and heads deeper into the heart of the city. Not far from the starting point of the horizonback migration, the party approaches a brick building with a sign that reads, Beefslab Butchers. A simple table and two chairs have been set up outside. Both chairs are currently occupied by people wearing the armor of the Aurora Watch (one female drow and the other an enourmous orc woman), their elbows braced against the table and their hands locked in an arm-wrestling duel. Two dozen festivalgoers watch them silently, until—SLAM!—the occupant of the left chair pushes her opponent’s arm to the table and the crowd erupts in whoops and cheers. A quiet male goblin—Vars, the owner of the butcher shop—sits off to the side, managing the wagers made by onlookers.

Towering above the rest of the crowd, the group can easily spot Maggie, the enormous ogre who the party met at the maze contest. She looks happily at the contest, patiently waiting for her turn to enter. Unlike the other contests, there does not seem to be any posted rules anywhere, but after asking around the crowd, the party finds that the way this contest works is this:

Tereze storms ahead of the group, eager to show off her strength.
"Come! Watch me crush this!" She shouts excitedly as she walks up to the table and places her elbow down next to the drow. "Your arm must be tired from doing this all day - Mine's fresh as a daisy!" She taunts, but it appears the drow's arm musn't have been that bad, because while Tereze puts up a good fight, the drow easily overcomes her.

Tereze walks back to the group, a little ashamed of her bravado - and uneager to try again.
