Part 9: Plundering the Plunderers' Plunder

From his spot, Eltrezar heaves as hard as his frail frame allows! It isn't the strongest pull, but many hands make light work!

Luban is shocked to see Maloria swim down to him, worried that he now had two armored dwarfs to drag out of the water. But when she presents the rope, he begins deftly tying it around Thurig before nodding at her. His lungs burn, but there is time before he needs to take a breath. As Mal tugs the rope, he tries to push off from the bottom and swim upwards with the rope in hand!

OOC:
Some quick Googling and completely unscientific alanysis would suggest a dwarf weighs about 150lbs, and a set of plate armor would weigh about 50lbs. Furthermore, a powerful wizard named Archimedes, who probably only Eltrezar and Spugnoir would have heard of, once wrote a famous principle stating that a body immersed in a fluid is subjected to an upwards force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid, and therefore 1lb on land weighs about .85lbs underwater, and a dwarf wearing full plate and weighing 200lbs on land would likely weigh only about 170lbs while laying prone at the bottom of a Giant Crayfish pool. Multiply that by two dwarves, and you have about 340lbs.
Surely Eltrezar's weenie arms would still be ill-equipped to pull a rope bearing that sort of weight, but between himself and the four other party members standing around the pool's edge, all of whom have a 14 Strength, 70lbs apiece doesn't seem like anything we need to make an ability roll for...
Those above feel the tug of the line and heave up, feeling the weight lifting off from the poll's bottom. some seconds later, they see Luban, Maloria, and the unconscious Thurig breach the surface, and with a group effort, they drag the heavily encumbered, icy-cold dwarves to the pool's edge.

Gilly clatters to the floor as the rope suddenly goes slack when the dwarves and half-orc are pulled free. She clambers up and crosses to her companions.

"Potions. Eltrezar, potions, quick!" she checks the bodies of the two that dove in first, and determining that they are alive, holds her hand up impatiently over the injured dwarf, waiting for the wizard to pass her a health potion!

Ora curses the rats upstairs as she stands uselessly around while Gilly checks the others. She could bring the dwarf back, if the rats hadn’t attacked so viciously and wounded their magic user.

She crosses to the half-orc, and claps him on the back as he sits on the stone!

"That was very well done! Did you kill the thing, then?! Very well done, indeed!"

Not wanting to disappoint Gilly, but also confused as to why she is insistent on his potions, Eltrezar hands the halfling his two potions of Detect Danger.
OOC:
Eltrezar has no potions of healing.

Luban lays on his back trying to catch his breath. It's so much more difficult when a lovely lady is observing you. He puffs out his chest, still struggling for breath, before trying to speak. He fails at this attempt, and opts to nod at Ora instead

Oops. Mal… Maloria… you have potions right??
Jun 8, 2022 3:55 am
Lying on his back, Luban catches a glimpse of what looks like a pile of gold not far away in the cave. He rises from his prostrate position, and shakes off while shimming over.
OOC:
I spy, with my little Darkvision eye, treasure directly above Ora.

No, Mal has no potions left :(
Mal gulps in air as she breaks the surface and dargs herself and her cousin onto the shore using arms numb with cold. Once safe, she looks over to Luban and gives the man a sincere clasp of the shoulder with a look that conveys more than words ever could.

"Thank you friend, my cousin and I owe you our lives."

Mal turns to her companions with tears in her frozen eyes,

"All of you, thank you so much. I owe each of you a life debt."

"Very bra… oh…" Ira stands back, giving the man some space as he avoids the barrage of claps raining down on in him in favor of something else…

She turns on her heel and responds to Mal:

"Wait until we get you both back safely to town! I think the coins we found earlier are prize enough for today! Unless you can wake your cousin…"

Anything to be said for going to the bottom to see if the big fella pulled down any other victims to ge looted, or treasure to be found?

OOC:
Oh we've gotta search for treasure, that's for sure

"Will he be alright?" Gilly asks, as she checks over the unconscious form of the dwarf.

The other deaths had been more… fully realized. It was cut and dry. This one wasn’t so obvious. Much like when Bors fell.

"We should get him back up top. That’ll be a job on its own…"

Leaving the dwarf, she crawls to the waters edge. She’s greeted with her own face looking back at her. She peers beyond it, wondering what lay at the bottom, around and under the creatures dead form.

She spits into the water then.

"This place…"

Luban and Mal should have been able to see if there were any other victims down there. We were at the bottom, right?

Eltrezar nods at all the expressed desire to return to the surface. He moves back to the hallway with lantern in hand, ready to move on. This place really was a graveyard, and only the strong survived.

I forgot about Infravision. They descended about 50' until they hit the bottom of the pool, so they were out of the 30' range of any torches, lanterns, or light spells shining down from above. They did not see anything that gave off a heat signature. Just a cave-like tunnel extending into 60' of darkness, sort of like this:

OOC:
Mal and Luban both felt a current that was at least strong enough to slowly start dragging Thurig's prone form into the darkness, but Mal and Luban seemed able to resist it without too much problem.
Luban begins to skirt the pool. The monster seems to have been fairly successful in its hunting excursions up to this point, for there are bones and litter in and around the pool's edge, though Mal and luban saw only sand below. Near the back (northeast) edge of the pool the half-orc discovers 17 copper pieces, 30 silvers, 19 gold, and a longsword. In the water, near a ledge which drops abruptly into the depths below, he sees the shine of what appears to be a piece of jewelry, pinned underneath a skull. Near that, wedged among some rather large ribs and a few other bones that appear to have once made part of a humanoid limb, a white cylinder-looking tube lay.

Sigh. Back into the water. Removing his armor, short, and boots, Luban enters the frigid pool once more. He collects the tube, careful retrieves the piece of jewelry, and examines the other bones for treasure beneath.
Jun 10, 2022 7:45 pm
Moving the skull with his hand, he finds a beautiful platinum pin set with a smallish ruby. It looks quite valuable.

Then, removing the cylinder from the pile of bones, Luban finds a hollow tube, also made of bone. Whether its placement was intentional, in order to camouflage it and keep it hidden, or if it was simply dropped in the most unfortunate of places, it would be easy to overlook the item. The tube seems to be sealed on each end with cork plugs, covered again in an off-white wax.
Jun 10, 2022 7:54 pm
Luban collects all of the above, tucks the pin in a pocket (he still has his pants), then swims back to the surface. He takes the coins and sword, and places all of the above (minus the pin, of course) at the feet of the group. "I ain't one for maths, so someone can divvy up the coins, but the sword looks like magic to me! Given that I risked life and limb, would it be out of place to claim it? Also, this tube seems to be sealed up, so scrolls? Here ye go," he says as he hands the tube to Spugnoir.
OOC:
No, the sword wasn't described as looking magical.
