Chapter 1: Moose Hunt

Grandfather Eiwa’s request was clear: hunt down and bring back a meal worthy of the upcoming Night of the Green Moon. With the expert aid of head scout Wipa, tracking down a suitable beast was easy. Pakano, your fellow scout-in-training, all but whooped with excitement during the hunt. With the quarry in sight, now comes the hard part—killing it.

In the forest copse beyond some thick foliage, dim morning light outlines a lone bull moose nearly as big as a baby mammoth. The moose casts a wide shadow on the ridge to the north. The sound of trickling water from a stream to the west intermingles with that of the moose idly munching on the tender grass sprouting from the recently thawed tundra. Your hunting party lurks behind thick foliage, planning the right moment to strike.

"This is our prey," Wipa whispers. "We must not startle him. If we do, and he charges us, our only choice is to run."

Her solemn, quiet words are met with a snort from Pakano, a young Kellid hunter whose beautiful face perpetually bears an arrogant sneer. "Let’s just get him," he growls.

Wipa silences the youth with a wave of her hand. "This animal is our superior in strength, size, and speed," she says calmly. "Before we strike, we must try to press our advantage."

"Let's see how much you've learned? Any suggestions?" she asks the group.
OOC:
Please feel free to introduce your character. You may come with suggestions of how to deal with the moose. The adventure have a few suggestions that Wipa can supply if you are unsure.

There's map, but for now it is simply a skill challenge that can make felling the moose an easier mission. It is assumed you have followed the expert or succeeded your stealth rolls so calm speaking won't scare the moose.

Grom pulls the green hood off his head for the first time during the hunt. His head is bald and marked with abstract tatoos, but he sports a dark, thick, beard that obsures his features and accentuates the piercing cold blue-grey eyes. Using his staff for leverage he stands slowly, silently, and then throws his head back as if to peer through the canopy of the trees to the heavens above. Without changing his posture, he begins to speak:

"I see two ways. I see the way of the earth, and the way of the skies. The way of the earth is for our mother to caress her sacrifice to us in a loving embrace. Whilst she caresses the beast and whispers into his inner ear to be calm and to let be, our warriors may despatch him to her. The way of the sky is like the capricious wind. The beast will not hear death that beats its way towards him. The creatures of the sky will descend upon him like so many avenging angels, but these are not what brings death to him; rather the warriors of the Kellid will make there way to the distracted beast and complete the sacrifice"

Grom looks around the group, and then sits crossed-legged on the ground once more.
OOC:
The way of the earth is to cast tanglefoot, whilst the way of the sky is to cast animal allies :-)
Apr 11, 2022 12:44 pm
Atticus looks out from the cops of trees at their target. Looking around at the others he lays out a simple plan. We break into two groups and surround our prey. Then as we tighten the circle, we use range weapons to wear it down and finish it up close.

Once done Atticus steps back and let's someone else speak up. He runs a hand through his brown hair and allows a brief smile to appear on his face.
Apr 11, 2022 6:22 pm
Igbork musters the situation with furrowed brows, his tattooed spiral shapes perfectly blending into the shadows that the surrounding foliage casts. Then he turns to his fellow tribe members and talks in a low voice. Everytime the wind stops rustling the leaves he stops talking in order to minimize the chance of the moose hearing him
Atticus' proposal is a wise one but we have to be careful. The moose. It's stronger than us. And it will know that. Will bear on whoever attacks it. And as soon as it's enraged it will not feel the earth and the sky, will not feel pain only anger.
Igbork points at the tree left of the moose.
I choose the way of the earth AND the sky. Will crawl over there and then rise up into that tree. Then I will hurt it. Not enough to panic but enough that it will try to bring me down.
Then you can tighten your grip, bring the power of the earth and the sky upon it. A mighty feast for our people will be the reward if we strike quickly and deadly at once.
Donia, Lorena and Muriel will be glad to eat something other than fish and berries. Especially Donia and Muriel will need the strength of the moose in the winter.

As the other tribe members will know, Lorena is Igbork's wife and Donia and Muriel are his daughters. Igbork smirks a bit as he thinks of their faces when the group comes home with their prey...

Koram stands tall amongst the trees, silently looking out to the wide-antlered beast, in awe of its size and majesty. He stands at just over six feet, slim but muscled under his dark clothes and thick cloak. His long, wavy hair frames a comely, handsome face with rigid features and purple eyes set like gemstones below his brow.

"This is a treasured find," he says, "It will serve the following well for the festivities." He passes a glance backward to his companion, Haitith. "What do you think? Looks appetizing, doesn't it?"

The blue-tinged dragon behind him stretches its wings and yawns, answering as typical in Draconic, "You know just as well as I do, Koram, that my body does not gain sustenance from flesh. The memory of such is fleeting, but yes, it would have been appetizing. Once."

"You just have to remember harder," Koram replies in Kellid before speaking more generally to the rest of the group again, "This thing will feed everyone once we bring it down. If we need to flush it toward any particular direction, I have a trick that may help." Those that have spent any time around Koram know that 'trick' is shorthand for some sort of arcane magic, though his magic is not as familiar to the following as the druid's own nature-wrought magic. As such, his use of the word 'trick' still carried with it some discomfort or a questioning look from some members of their group.
OOC:
Koram can use Ghost Sound to possibly scare the creature away from the source of the sound, which might drive it to a specific direction, if helpful.

Wipa
Wipa nods as you speak. "You're ideas are clever," she says. "I do believe I will eat well at the festival."

She holds her stomach, she is in no shape to join you in the fight, but she has a spear ready to throw should the need be.
OOC:
You get one round to act before the Moose. So you can cast your spells, or get into position.

@c1nder If you cast Ghost Sound, you can make an Intimdate check with a lower DC than usual. If successful you can make the Moose flat footed.
Apr 12, 2022 5:49 pm
Igbork presents a wide grin, gives you all a short nod and sneaks off towards the tree to the left. As soon as he arrives there he climbs as high as silently possible, draws his shortbow and waits for the ambush to begin.
Apr 12, 2022 6:18 pm
Atticus readies his spear and crouching down prepares to move into position. Give me strength..guide my aim..this is for the clan. Atticus silently offers a quick prayer to the gods.

As you get into position, Pakano tired of waiting for the hunt, runs forward charging. "Let's be done with this!"

He gets about four steps before he trips, and falls down at the Moose's hooves, he seems to stunned to move.

The moose is quick to react and stands on his hind legs, stamping his hooves into the fallen form of Pakano.
OOC:
Your turn to act. Going to do block initiative (so everyone acting between enemies gets to act at the same time), not that this matters much in this battle. But feel free to act when you can instead of waiting for your turn.
Apr 16, 2022 10:50 pm
"Dammit! I guess its now or never - Pakano's going to get himself killed!" Koram points at the animal - "Haitith, let's do this!"

The dragon, on command, rushes forward to the mastadon as Koram throws his hand forward, sending a surge of electrical energy towards the beast. Once Haitith reaches the animal, the eidolon strikes out against it.

The electrical surge from Koram strikes the ground next to the moose who bellows in anger at the sudden attack. It is able to turn its attention to Haitith in time, as it parries the eidolon's blow with its antlers.

Igbork's first and third arrow misses its mark, but the second hits its mark, grazing the big creature.

Atticus spear goes wide and lands in the ground behind the creature.
OOC:
Grom, will you do anything else than pray?

"Haitith!" Koram yells. He still feels the impact to his gut, pain flowing through his body as his Eidolon, linked to him in more ways than one, manages to skirt a majority of the impact but not all of it.

"Show it what you're made of, Haitith!" Koram commands, and the dragon opens its mouth the let loose a blazing line of electricity across the field while Koram rushes closer. He raises his crossbow and lets a bolt loose.
OOC:
Koram/Heitith takes 3 damage.

Everyone is on edge, and are able to dodge the brunt of the moose's attack. It is however running too fast for Igbork's arrows to hit.

In the chaos of the electrical blast it is hard to get a good fix on the moose, and the bolt misses as well.

The druid rolls away from the moose to avoid the goring that seemed inevitable; Springing to his feet, he begins to chant in a deep voice and thrusts his hands towards the moose, whereupon a vine dowsed in sticky sap that materialises from the druids hands, attempts to lash the beast's legs...

Grom's vines misses its mark and hits the ground next to the moose, while it deftly parries Atticus' attacks.

It goes on the offensive and with a few mighty thrusts, attacks Atticus with its antlers. The first strike hits the fighter hard in the side, then the next one cuts through his armor and fells the fighter to the ground.

You can hear Wipa call out Atticus' name from the bushes.
OOC:
And a new round. I'm so sorry. I've never rolled so well on this site while your rolls have been what I'm used to. Atticus needs to make a Death Save unless someone heals him this round.

This is going all wrong, Koram thinks as chaos erupts around them. He watches as Atticus falls to the ground and sprints to action, taking out his medicine kit and working to patch Atticus up while Haitith surges forward moves into attack position. "I've got you, friend," he says quiet but urgent to his fallen comrade, "I think..." His hand slips and he thinks he causes more harm than anything. "Dammit!" he says through gritted teeth. He pushes himself and manages to close the wound, then gives Atticus a couple of gentle slaps on the cheek. "C'mon, wake up..."

OOC:
It is a flat check with a DC equal to 10 + your dying condition. You have dying 2 with the critically failed medicine check, so with your 16 you are back to dying 1.

Remind you that you all have Hero Points to spend. They can be spent to reroll any d20 roll or to immediately stabilize after you fail a death save (that means you can wait until you fail your third and final death save).

Nononono Igbork calls out. That was not going as smooth as he was expecting. Not at all.

One of Igbork's arrows hits, though it's another grazing hit.

The moose does a new charge and runs around the area hitting everything in its way. It manages to charge through the rest of the group before it ends its charge right in front of Atticus.

Pakano seems to get to his senses again, he grabs his spear before getting to his feet. He strikes out at the big creature, and his spear hits its mark causing a large wound.

The animal rushes both Koram and Haitith, knocking them both for a spin.

The intense pain of not only one of them, but both, taking the full force of the charge is enough to throw them both back, but they somehow remain standing.

Determined to end the creature before them, in spite of the pain coursing through his body, Koram throws his hands up and shouts an incantation, then brings his hands down towards the creature as electricity bursts from his fingers towards it. Simultaneously, Haitith bites at the beast in a flurry of teeth.
OOC:
Koram/Haitith took a combined total of 18 damage; they are now at 3/21 HP

Action 1: Cast Focus Spell : Boost Eidolon (+2 Eidolon natural weapon damage)
Actions 2&3: Act Together - Cast Spell : Electric Arc; Eidolon Strikes

Critical hit? In PF2e its just double damage - no need to roll again, right? If the spell hits too, that's 27 damage :D

The moose lets out a bellow as the electrical blast hit it, and it's too stunned by that attack to defend against Haitith's follow up attack. With a mighty chomp of its jaws, it is able to wrest the majestic creature to the ground.

Pakano lifts his spear above his head, ready to take credit for the kill.

Wipa walks out of the brush, concern obvious on her face. "Well fought! How are you faring Atticus?"
OOC:
A very well timed crit.

Igbork jumps out of his tree and joins the others
As he sees Pakano lift his spear to end the moose he laughs You may be a member of the falcon clan but today you fought like a duck. If you want to get the final blow go ahead! As long as we all survived and we have enough meat for the Night of the Green Moon I'm pleased

Koram shakes his hands, latent magic subliming from his fingertips into the cool air. "That that almost had us, I feel like!" he says to the group, "But nice wor-"

He's cut short by Haitith's loud hiss as the eidolon positions itself between Igbork and the fallen mastadon. "You will NOT claim my kill, whelp!" the dragon says in words Igbork can understand, "This was my glory, mine and Koram's, not yours, you graceless fool!" The eidolon rears back, bearing the full front of its long, slender body and baring its fangs, a faint blue glow of energy emanating from its scales.

"Haitith!" Koram shouts, "Enough! This is about the Following. For the Following. Let him have his moment."

The eidolon's eyes remain locked with those of Igbork for several long moments, then Haitith withdraws to coil and sulk next to Koram.

Igbork raises his hands and chuckles Hehehe... your spirit friend has an explosive temper. But it has a bit of a point. Maybe we should all end this moose together. After all we all participated in its downfall.

He draws his shortsword and prepares to thrust it into the moose after everyone else is ready to deliver a final blow as well

Wipa
It looks like Pakano is about to say something when Wipa quickly interrupts. "Igbork has the right idea. This was done by all of you in union. You all played a part, no matter how big or small. That is how the following have survived and how it will continue to survive. Not all help is immediately visible, but does not make it less important."

Pakano gives Haitith a glare before relenting and placing his spear above the moose, ready to strike on Igbork's mark.

Together you "slay" the beast together, and are able to patch up your damages before Wipa instructs you on how to butcher the carcass. The process takes several hours, as it involves removing hide and organs, carefully segmenting the skeleton, and carving out the meat. Once done you are able to transport it all back to camp where you're greeted by your loved ones.
OOC:
Feel free to write up a scene of you returning to camp and your routine for the night. Will continue with a new post tomorrow.

Your training in butchering from Wipa opens up the skill feat All of the Animal as a common feat going forward.

Koram and Haitith walk triumphantly into camp, carrying their fair share of the weighty carcass and leaving it with the rest for the upcoming festivities. He moves to join his clan and, more particularly, searches out Talina.

"What do you think?" he asks, a smirk on his face, "Pretty good for my first time out on a hunt like that, huh?"

She smacks his shoulder and grins back, "Could have been worse, I suppose. I heard you all about got killed out there."

"Who told you that?" he asks, his face reddening.

Haitith, quiet until now, perks up, "It is true, you know. I had to step in and save everyone, or you'd all be trampled to death. While it would have been interesting to watch, I couldn't well let my only tether to the mortal plane die."

Koram screws his face up and frowns at the dragon, "Yeah, right. You know you love me. Don't try to hide it."

The dragon harumphs and curls up on the ground in silent protest.

The three of them lounge near the fire together for a little more than an hour as the final hours of the day wind down and Koram relays the events of the hunt, moment by moment, to Talina. Eventually as the fire turns to embers they vanish to Koram's tent until the next morning.

Atticus arrives back at camp carrying a hefty share 9f the neat. After dropping it off and paying his respects to the elders, Atticus heads over to where his brother and sister Musk Ox are camped out. Checking his weapons carefully, Atticus fixes any Chios in the blades and soon has then as sharp as ever.

Once he's satisfied that his gear is ready, Atticus turns to one of his favorite pastimes...carving figurines. Pulling out his current project, Atticus works on carving out the various shapes until it gets to dark to see. Once done Atticus eats his evening meal and goes to sleep in his hut.

Igbork arrives home with a hefty piece of moose. His wife Lorena is weaving and his daughters Donia and Muriel are playing with figurines that they got from Atticus.
Muriel notices him first Daddy! Woah! Did you fight a dragon? That's the biggest piece of meat that I've ever seen!

Igbork strokes her head Hehehe... Yes that's dragon meat. We found one, it tried to fly away but I grabbed its neck, swung on its back and rode it down to the ground where we all slayed it

His wife roles her eyes but smiles and hugs him. She wipes some blood from his arms. I'll take care of the meat. You get cleaned up. You still have 'dragon blood' on your forearms

After a fine supper, Igbork lies down and immediatly falls asleep....
