Jim says as he is waiting for Ha'aroo Looking inside that huge statue looks rather enterprising. I like to see the inside of that tomb. Hopefully that isn't what killed everything here.

Shara glances up in awe at the towering statue. "I too would love to investigate that place."

She goes to Undril, their companion that she'd never made a point of speaking to. "You've been out here longer than any of us," she remarks, pointing to the House of the Crocodile. "Have you any idea what might be in there?"

bird

Bird is certainly exhausted and only wish to get away. She shares that the somehow occasionally fell from the higher land next to he enclosure thus trapped inside it all by itself. It was a few days ago, though bird don't have meaning of time and can't really recall how much days ago was it. Ha'aroo realise this is a young (child) representative of their species and fail to get any more information that that however he tries.

I've arrived Chult same time as you did.
The information she posses and is willing to share as representative of The Order of the Gauntlet :
When Order of the Gauntlet first brought its war against undead to Chult, its members established this base camp around this ancient Chultan shrine. Our Order is not interested in the shrine itself, but the surrounding were good place to build defenses around. So they believed. They set up a camp, believing that their own strong arms were sufficient protection. A couple months ago, they were proved tragically wrong when hundreds of undead swarmed out of the jungle and overran the camp. Only a handful of warriors escaped from that slaughter. The second wave of templars established Camp Vengeance at a location they believe is easier to defend.

OOC:
I will push story forward regardless of events with the bird or any other investigation you may still want to do around the temple before entering it

Jim moves closer to shrine and takes 5 feet stairs up Between the statue’s feet is a stone archway leading to a dark tunnel.
OOC:
Based on Jim's background feature he realises following
Jim understand that this shrine was built centuries ago by Chultans. Target of worship is so called "man and crocodile" cult. The cult is a history though.

As he looks inside he see 23 feet high ceilings draped with cobwebs, and the stone-tiled floor is covered with a thick layer of mud, creepers, and blown-in leaves.
OOC:
What do you do next? I have added a recap of the site here
May 17, 2022 10:08 am
Jim goes to his mule and takes the wooden box off it. He then retrieves Bestie to his hands as well as a now lite bullseye lantern for light. He empties his backpack into the wooden box and now puts Crowbar, 10 Pitons, 10 Torches, Map Case, Flasks of Oil, 4 Rations, Mess Kit, Tinderbox, Sack of Candles and Sack of Salt in it. He puts his tent and bedroll in the box from his backpack and attaches on Miner’s Pick, Shovel next to his shield. Otherwise, he gets himself ready for tomb exploring. It is obvious why he has a wooden box with him.

He does take out his map case a moment or two and draws the entrance and such on it before putting it back away. Obviously, he intends to map the place out as well.

Is everyone ready for some exploring?

Jim is walking with Bestie (A large SledgeHammer) & lite bullseye lantern in his hands.
OOC:
Jim: 21/21 HP, AC 16 if using shield, Bestie and Bulleyes Lantern in hands.

Nebula opens the pen gate to let the bird out.

"Wait for me!" She calls out as she runs after Jim, following him into the shrine. "We should be careful in case any of those undead from long ago are still creeping around!
May 17, 2022 11:26 am
Seeing Jim readying himself to explore Travers walks over, readying his equipment also "you've done this before right? What you reckon we'll find?" he draws his sword at nebulas words and will follow Jim and nebula inside.

Ha"aroo asks the bird one final question before it leaves "have you seen any creatures here since you locked yourself in?"

Ha'aroo glances about to make sure there is no danger in the immediate area. While still able to speak with animals he turns to his mule and lets it know the current situation. That they are going inside some old ruins that could be dangerous and if it would like to stay out here and if there is anything dangerous out here to give off a yell and we'll come back. Or if you would like to go down inside with us. I would recommend it staying up here and there is any danger it can hide out nearby for us to come out or for it to come inside.

Ha'aroo takes out his bag of ball bearings, rope and 2 waterskins from the chest. And tells Jim "ill hold onto the lanturn if you would like so that you can hold bestie and your shield."

Ha'aroo stands behind his good friend Jim and is ready to go down and see what lays within.

Bird birds answer yes it did see a lot of creatures
OOC:
Since I have post that Nebula let bird go, I want to some confirmation that Ha'aroo let bird go before it explains what creatures it saw. Roll animal handling with advantage if you want to keep talking to the bird in the condition it is currently is (imagine a children who have been left alone for a few day)

Not a problem as Jim gives Ha'aroo his bullseye lantern and does get his shield out. Jim seems more alive in his now natural habitat.

Jim lets Traver's know that Jim has been in a few ruins and knows what to expect. This one is probably a T&T. (Traps and Treasure) Ha'aroo can vetch for that Jim has done some exploring before as they did one ruins together.

I would like to have talked to the bird before it was released and toss it some food if it hasnt eaten in a few days. I imagine talking to it and making sure it is ok and not going to attack us and letting it know we are not a threat before released but if released beforehand then oh well. Also would like to tell the bird that it can hang out with us until it finds its flock if it wishes to but we are going inside for a little bit first.

As soon as we enter the building Ha'aroo puts his hand on Jims shoulder and says "Just like old times buddy" and gives Jim bardic inspiration. Which can be after you roll a d20 but before the DM says the outcome.

OOC:
Let me retrospectively resolve talking to bird, meanwhile I still wait for information about the why how you are entering the shrine and if you do anything else before that. Also - does everyone goes in? DO you invite Undril to join you as she is not interested?
When Ha'aroo talks to bird and it start recalling the creatures it has seen it remembers predators and start to panic, when Ha'aroo enters Animal pens, and hold bird and tells it he will protect it. That tactics helps to calm bird down and it shares, that it's parents came to scare away any creature who was to eat it. You understand that parents are somewhere near. The bird then describe other creatures: crocodiles (who did not reach him in pens, flying humans, monkey with sticks, huge snake (scared away by parents).
You figure out that monkeys with sticks are most probably small sized humanoids.

Ha'aroo will be going in with Jim and would ask Undril to take care of the animals if she would not like to go inside. I will tell the bird she can stay with Undril if Undril is not going in and it might be safer to hang out with us until it finds its parents. If not he wishes the bird good luck in finding her parents. And then Ha'aroo will relay all the info the bird told him to the rest of the group of everything she saw and what was going on.

DM you asked why we are trying to go in the building. Ha'aroo is going in as he was told to check "abandoned ruins, old cities: churches, tombs and cloisters anything that could be of an interest to a necromancer." and learning anything he can about the area (paintings, stories, rumors) could lead them to the correct area.
The rumors they collected, Syndra and Grandfather Zitembe had no further info on where the soulmonger might be in Chult and what it may look like. So it is time to gain knowledge of the area and everything that is going on in Chult so that hopefully we can find it faster than just wandering around. Heck if its here then mission accomplished.

Haha well thats the point of the game. Have fun and make silly jokes lol. Ha'aroo will walk behind Jim as Jim will need light when walking forward. He will keep about 10 feet distance between Jim and himself as he knows that Jim is really good at jumping out of the way when he steps on a pressure plate but sometimes when Ha'aroo is too close Jim, he would get in Jims way when Jim tries to leap out of the way of the trap and then they both get hurt.

Shara thanks Undril for the information and regards the others heading up to the temple. "I'd like to see what's inside there as well," she announces. She offers to stay somewhere in the middle when it comes to marching order, and to cast another light spell if it's necessary to supplement Ha'aroo's.
May 17, 2022 5:44 pm
Unril agree to stay with Mules and be a back you up in case of a need.

Travers will stay at the back of the group heading into the shrine keeping an eye out behind them for anything coming from the back.

With a help of dark vision and several light sources you see it is about 50 feet long tunnel with closed doors at the end, before that door a floor of the shrine rises 7 feet, forming a ledge.
OOC:
no checks required to climb up the ledge, but you don't see what is behind and only taller of you see the upper part of the door on the other side of ledge
Jim slowly steps forward. Ha'aroo asks Nebula and Shara to keep distance and follows jim when he is 10 feet away

Travers stay on the stairs, Undril downstairs with Mules.

When Ha'aroo start mowing forward the stone-tiled floor covered with a thick layer of mud, creepers, and blown-in leaves suddenly fall and Ha'aroo fall prone in the 20 feet deep pit

Luckily for Jim he has just passed the edge of the pit, however almost at the same moment scything blades sweep out from concealed wall niches
OOC:
Jim - make a DC 13 Dexterity throw to only take half of the damage I rolled
Jim, seeing pit behind dashes forward and gets up the ledge, getting some slashes from 4 blades.

Nebula and Shara who listened Ha'aroo's suggestion and stay at entrance did not fall into pit and see a narrow ledge remains around the outside edge.
OOC:
The ledge can be traversed safely with a successful DC 10 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check
