It takes moments for the Gardiner-Thing to appear at the top of the stairs, having strode past the dazed figures of Perry and the Policeman. It latches eyes on to Otto, and a deep guttural voice comes from all around, "Dream!" As it moves down the stairs toward the German.

OOC:
Otto, do you move up the stairs and attack him before he gets to you or wait defensively and dodge/fight back/maneuver in response?
Jun 25, 2022 5:10 am
OOC:
You know, I was intending to have him wait, but given the screeching the thing is doing...
"Run!" Otto roars one final time, then he's running up the stairs two at a time, makeshift weapon at the ready. There will be no more infernal sounds coming from the thing's head if he bashes it in with a heavy brass torchiere!

The Gardiner-thing tries to bat away the incoming blow but Otto is too fast. Heaving with both hands he slams the solid base of the lamp into the face of the horror. There's a wet sound like a watermelon dropped from a height as the face of the thing is crushed by the impact. It tries to stagger backwards and falls on the stairs, collapsing into a heap, unmoving.

Footsteps are heard running along the sidewalk outside. Shouts of "What’s going on here?" precede the arrival of two policemen
with guns drawn, moments too late.

Over the following weeks, you piece together the truth of the situation. James Gardiner enjoyed a vivid and fantastical dream life but somehow lost his ability to dream. He sought occult solutions to regain his dreams and found a spell in a tome that he believed would open the way for his dreams to return.
Unfortunately, the spell and the book were cursed. Some strange entity from another world tricked Gardiner into performing the rituals he found in the tome. One prepared his body to become a vessel for the foul entity while the other led to his death, sending poor Gardiner’s soul into oblivion. His empty body could then be possessed by the entity—just as you all discovered.

During the fight, some of you had a brush with insanity and still cannot explain the dreamlike and nightmarish visions experienced. Thanks to the bravery of Otto Schmidt, the body was damaged enough that the creature could no longer inhabit, but Gardiner was gone forever. Ma Shanks was not impressed to see the state of her lamp but you all agreed it was a small price to pay.
OOC:
Due to your timely actions, you can feel proud to have played your part in foiling the schemes of a monster from beyond. Your surviving investigators are each awarded 1D6 Sanity points. Well done! Perhaps this incident has changed your investigator. If there are dark and unwholesome things out there that wish to break into our world, will your steadfast investigator join the fight to stop them?

Experience works differently in CoC. When you successfully use a skill, you tick it on your sheet and at the end of a scenario, you get to roll against the skill. Get higher than your current total and you gain 1d10 in that skill. Below are the skills used, so go ahead and roll, who knows if your character will be needed again!

The experience haunted Lang's dreams, and he was oddly happy he could still dream unlike poor Jim.

Lang had to know whatever secrets were in those books and ledgers, even if only to sell or destroy them. Perry could be sure of that. Maybe this could be the start of a mutually beneficial partnership.
OOC:
I had a great time! Thanks, Knife! If you're running another CoC game, I'd love to have Lang continue investigating and leaking sanity. ^_^

Having only caught glimpses of the creature, Perry is filled with a need to know. He's known for his ability to track down items, and helps Lang find all sorts of occult texts and items: he stops reading them before turning them into more capable hands real quick, learning his lesson after a dual assault of night terrors at night and minor hallucinations during the day.

He happily turns over the book; the ledgers, he insist, contain only "a simple mundane mystery about me. Why do you think I joined your snooping around the apartment so readily?"

Sam, for sure, will always remember what happened that day. It definitely changed his way of looking at things, his place in society or the world. It also made him closer to his neighbors. He will try to keep in touch, and, especially if some uncanny events of the same kind happen again, he will be willing to give a hand.
