"Oh no ... this can't be! I think we are being attacked by a ... a book! Merith squints through the dimness at the edges of Ernesto's light as she tries to make out the details of an apparition that has appeared. "And I believe we are dealing with some kind of ghost. Better hustle out of the way, but don't fall off!"

OOC:
Everyone, please roll as if you are doing an Attack (including add your AC to the roll). Lowest roll that is under (if any) the librarian's missile (book) Attack takes 1 damage.

Can I use my perfect accuracy talent?

Rolls

OOC:
Attack rolls are 2d10+AC, +1 if you're a warrior, +2 if you're attacking with a weapon in its preferred arena ... do you have a missile weapon ... yes! An archery duel is in the offing!

Po's blade springs to his fist as if bidden.

Rolls

Criss Dagger (1 dmg) plus AC - (2d10+2)

(41) + 2 = 7

OOC:
Are you going to throw the dagger up at the librarian?

OOC:
No sir. If there is no one to stab, I will refrain from doing so.

Ernesto's longknife is in his hands, like it's always been there, as the heavy book plummets...

Rolls

Longknife (Tight) + AC (1) - (2d10+1)

(48) + 1 = 13

Ernesto strikes at the plummeting tome, deflecting it from his own head; Merith sidesteps and avoids tumbling over the knee-high rail of the platform; but Po, poor Po, steps in exactly the wrong direction and puts his head in contact with the sharp hard corner of the book that Ernesto has knocked aside. It's just a glancing blow, but goodness it stings!
OOC:
Po, please take 1 point damage - I have marked for you.

You hear a shrill and menacing cackle from above; looking upward, you see the librarian's spectral hand plucking another hefty volume from the shelf.

Also, you hear an answering cackle from below the platform.
OOC:
What do you do?

"Well done Ernesto!" Merith says as she rights herself after almost falling into the abyss below. "What's that?"

Merith looks up toward the sound of snickering but before she can make out more features of what appears to be a ghostly hand she hears another snickering sound from below. Something makes her look back up though. A flash at the side of her eye and then she shrieks.

Look out! I think another book is about to become a weapon."

"Above and below, the librarians close in!" Ernesto says, fending off the plummeting book while still manning the controls, still trying to maneuver them to safety. Suddenly they are climbing, hopefully right past their attacker. "I do not like being used for target practice!" the man says to the librarian on the way by, right before trying to bring the gantry as close to the shelves as possible. "Give them a taste of their own multi-volume medicine!" he calls to the other two with him.
OOC:
Bomb them with books!

Brindell winces at the heavy crunch to his noggin, grabs a book and is about to toss it. He glances at the title. Melcom's Treatise on the Decline of Celestial Events. "Oh, I've wanted to read this one." He places it back. "Get us down so we can run!", ducking.
OOC:
My apologies, I completely missed that we were remaining on the hovering catwalk to exit.

P'raps a bit dazed, there ... to refresh the situation, you all three are on a movable catwalk gantry platform thing, which Ernesto is operating (flying) with a joystick and a dial.

I had edited my last post with the shocking reveal of the catwalk information.

Waiting for actions (or dialogue, and non-actions) from Ernesto and Merith? Next post from me Wednesday.

Merith ducks and swerves her body to avoid the attack of the books while trying to remain on the catwalk. "Ernesto, please! Keep us steady!"

Looking at both ghostly apparitions above and below she asks, "Who are you? What do you want of us? We only seek knowledge and mean no harm to you or the precious tomes.

"Down?" Ernesto says to Brindell Po, lifting both his eyebrows. "We can most certainly go... down!"

Slamming the controls, the handsome rogue halts their ascent and reverses it -- sending the catwalk plunging towards the ground at top speed. "Hang on, and watch out for falling books!"
OOC:
Head for the floor!

The library seems worrisomely deep! The platform plummets so rapidly that your feet feel very light. It would be nice if the handrail were higher; you all want to grip it, as if it will help you remain on the catwalk. It seems like you might fly up off the structure!

Another book falls toward you, but barely outpacing the descent of the catwalk. It is easy to sidestep the hefty volume, which settles gently onto the descending floor.

From above you hear a shriek of bibliophilic discontent. To the side, a ghastly librarian seems to slide upward as you zip downward past it.

How far down is the bottom? and what happens when you reach it? are questions that might race through your heads in these seconds. It is dark down here ... Ernesto's floating light is not falling as fast as the catwalk, it is trying to keep "down" with you but you are getting to the edge of its penfossa.

"Maybe slow down, Ernesto, I think we're out of range!" Brindell says, holding onto the railing while trying to keep his knees bent to absorb the sudden impact he expects.
