The Meeting at Deepnight

Phlan; the Jewel of Moonsea
A large frontier town on the Moonsea region of north Faerûn with a long and storied history.
Built in 367 DR, Phlan represents the perseverance of humans and their tenacity to bring civilization to the savage wilderness. Since its founding, it has been razed repeatedly by inhuman creatures from the north but continually rose, like the phoenix, from the ashes of its own destruction.

Phlan has grown rich from trade with the untamed wilds to the north of the Moonsea. Those seeking their fortunes flock to Phlan before adventuring out into the enchanted Quivering Forest, the mysterious Sorcerer's Isle and the orc, goblin and dragon-infested Dragonspine Mountains. But even the city itself has its fair share of dangers and secrets...

https://i.imgur.com/4zyF0yU.jpg Madame Freona’s Tea Kettle (and Freona herself) is a mystery to many. In the tumultuous Phlan, this is a place where people can go to have a drink or meal and escape the tensions of the schemers and the power-hungry. With the Tea Kettle’s reputation as a haven, adventures who can be discreet and behave themselves can often find employment there and avoid the hassle associated with other places in Phlan.

So far, that has been true. Madame Freona, a stout and officious halfling who runs the establishment with her five daughters, has proven an excellent hostess. Although you have had to share a common bunkroom with several other adventurers, the evening meal was excellent and the atmosphere pleasant.

You are now in the common room with the rest of Tea Kettle's regulars and semi-regulars. A trio of loud-mouthed dwarves is monopolizing the dart board, occupying the throwing line. The rest are either sitting at a table drinking or standing, mingling with the rest.
OOC:
This is your cue to introduce your characters. Do they know each other? Have you teamed up for some job before? You can discuss it among you either here in ooc or in the ooc thread. Go nuts - but not too nuts. Let's have some fun!

Merana had sat sulking for a few minutes. The ridiculous short folk had not let her use her bow on the dart board. It was "cheating", they called it. Merana had tried to argue but there was no convincing them that a bow was obviously the superior way to aim at a target so they had not let her play. It was intolerable.

Still she had posed herself at the table in the hopes one of her room mates might show and offer her some company to go with her drink.
OOC:

I don't know if we know each other but I am happy to play anyway you like. Please join Merana!

With the subtle adjustment of chainmail and wrist resting on the pommel of his sword as he maneuvered through the patrons of the establishment, Kashi offers a slight smile towards the sulking Wood Elf he's come to know as a kind acquaintance. "Ah, already offset by something, hm?" He chuckles in light jest as he takes a seat next to her. He carefully rests his shield against one of the table legs as he moves to rest forearms on the table. "Was the night truly that unkind to you, or have I missed some minor excitement so early on?" Kashi's grey eyes squint closed slightly more with his smiles before he breaks gaze from his companion to look over the crowd from a more stationary position.
Jun 18, 2022 8:29 pm
No minor excitement just yet. Merana said quietly, with a look toward the dwarves. Just a little disagreement about the rules of a very silly game. She drank quietly and deeply from her glass. Looking toward her companion, an elf like she, Merana had hoped for some quiet sympathy. No luck. Kashi had long discovered his ability to say just the simplest thing in a way that would pierce into Merana’s pride. She would compose herself as a proper officer should, with civility and grace, even if she suspected Kashi could see through it.

She turned to look at Kashi, unable to quite match his smile but softening slightly.

What have you been doing? Polishing your armor? Merana could not stand armor herself. Too noisy and she had hated polishing her dress curaiss for parades. Thank goodness she could stick with a more practical mode of dress nowadays. You’ve missed a bit. Merana said idly, nodding to a nonexistent speck of dirt on the paladin’s arm.

"Often times those end up in fights. I'm pleased to see that there's no squabble over a tavern game." He turns his head to look back at Merana before leaning away from the table. Kashi very carefully slips his fingers into the pocket of his trousers to pull out a leather cord. From there he gathers his hair up and away from his face to properly secure if via wrapping the leather cord accordingly around his hair.

At the comment to his armor he glances to where she nods to the spot she claims he missed. "Well, I've not had much of a chance to polish it yet. I still need to properly degrease and grease it." He lifts his arm with a slight jingle of his chainmail. "For the most part these rings clean themselves. However, throwing it in a barrel of sand and touching it up with some vinegar and grease should be fine. Maybe I can see about getting that done or doing it at some point." Kashi seemed to just rattle on about his armor clearly passionate about it. Keeping up appearances was vital but only so much could be done while on the road for the most part.

Sat at a table slightly off to the side of the room, a copper dragonborn drinking from his pint. Next to him, leaning on the chair, is his quarterstaff, while under him is his backpack. He’s wearing slightly scuffed leather armor of which the couter seems missing and under it, a slight shine of his copper-looking scale can be seen.
He’s minding his own business and trying to not be in the way of others because of his body, which is quite cumbersome. Furthermore, he’s mindlessly looking at three loud dwarves playing darts and an elf with a sulk on her face.
OOC:
The couter is the part of the armor that covers the elbow. He does however have leather bracers on.

The rest of the evening passes by rather uneventful, not taking into account the occasional stray dart landing on a side wall, close to someone's head and the angry shouting that followed.

You are preparing to bunk down for the evening when one of Freona’s daughters peeks into the room. The painfully shy red-headed daughter peeks around the door, catches your eye and hurriedly closes it again. A few seconds pass before she opens the door a crack, and sneaks another look at you.

Jun 19, 2022 8:05 pm
Merana felt the sensation on the back of her neck as a new presence made itself known at the door. Turning to see the girl, Merana’s military past came back to her muscle memory. Instinctively she pulled off her boots and headed to the door. Make sure they are clean for the morning, use some oil on the leather. she spoke sternly reaching into her pocket for a coin for the girl.
Jun 20, 2022 4:58 am
Kashi was straightening out where he'd be settling down for the night when he caught glimpse of the girl the first time. Ah, children. To be so young and curious. He thought she was just peeking in to gaze at all the interesting adventurers bunking in her home. He goes back to straightening out his bedroll when he heard Merana state about something being clean. When he glances over to see her bringing the child her boots he's quick to get up.

"Merana," He snips abruptly before moving to push the boots back into her hands. "If you want a shine go somewhere to have it done or learn to do it yourself. She's a child for crying out loud. A very young one at that." His brows furrow just a little to shame her for trying to make the child tend to her gear.

His expressions softens slightly as he looks towards the redheaded child. "My apologies for my friend here little one." He states before crouching slightly. "It's getting late now, isn't it? Shouldn't you be getting ready to tuck away for some sleep?"

Kashi's soothing words and friendly demeanour help the child overcome her shyness. She steps through the door into your room;

Reece

"Pardon my interruption," says the halfling girl named Reece, one of Freona’s five daughters, just shy of adulthood. "A chap just came into the common room downstairs and asked me to fetch you. Something about some coin needing to change hands for an easy job."

She plays with her curly red hair nervously.
"Uhm yeah; I'll need you, probably you and definitely you to follow me downstairs."
She says pointing at Merana, Kashi and Kepel in succession.

"If you don't mind that is. Please."
She quickly adds and abruptly turns stumbling a bit as she exits the room.
Jun 20, 2022 9:37 am
The girl is nearly an adult Kashi. Maybe you should stay here to rest a little, your poor eyes seem like they could use it. Merana poked as she put her coin back in her pocket, her boots back on her feet, and headed downstairs.

Kepel looks around to check that he was the one the halfling pointed. After having established that it was indeed him, he takes his things with him and reluctantly follows along.
Jun 20, 2022 3:01 pm
"Watch your tongue, soldier. I don't take kind to being insulted." He grumbles at this with a roll of his eyes. Child or adult doesn't matter in the end. She shouldn't be making those kinds of requests to people of this establishment. Kashi lets his mind wander as he collects his items quickly. Boarding with a room of adventurers you never know who might steal away with your items.

He glances over his shoulder when he notes someone else gathering their things. A dragonborn is rare. The copper scales catching his eye and interest. "Hopefully we're not going to be picked on. Don't think I saw many of my people or yours in town." He hefts his bag onto his shoulder and follows alongside the Dragonborn.

As you go down the stairs, Reece whispers to you
Reece
"He looks creepy and mysterious, but ma says he checks out."
She stops at the top of the last part of the staircase;
"Over there, at the table by the far left corner of the hall." she points and turns to rush right back upstairs.

The Harper

As you approach, you see a hooded figure. You can't tell much about the identity of the stranger, but as you get close you can tell it's a male human - some stubble on his chin that isn't obscured by the hood betrays him.

As you arrive at the table, he doesn't take his hood off or raise his head; instead, he only motions for you to sit. As you do so, you notice a brooch - round, gold, in dark blue enamel with a crescent moon and a harp on it.

Kepel sits down as requested by the hooded figure, but doesn't rest his back on the chair, and waits for said figure to start talking.
OOC:
Does Kepel have any knowledge about the brooch and what it means?
Jun 21, 2022 4:31 pm
Kepel keeps staring at the brooch as he tries to figure out if he has already seen it somewhere.

Kashi notes the man and becomes a little more cautious about hoe to proceed. While approaching he takes a moment to observe him a little more closely as he pulls his chair out to take a seat. Grey eyes attempt to focus on this man to gauge the intent of the individual. Halflings are rather friendly and usually very trustworthy in their advice, but Kashi is a little more wary when the intent is not directly clear.
OOC:
Can I make an insight check on The Harper to gather his general demeanor?
EDIT: Rolled.

Kashi can't tell much about the man across them besides that he looks quite serious. As much as Kepel stares at the brooch, he can't remember seeing this symbol elsewhere. The man keeps his face obscured by his hood and speaks in a low voice, obviously disguising it.
The Harper

"Indeed. I have a job for you of the utmost importance and of a somewhat delicate nature."

He trails off as he sees Kepel staring at his brooch.

"I don't know if you recognize this;" he says pointing at the small round ornament "it's a symbol of the organization that I'm a member of - The Harpers. Put simply, it's an organization that fights evil wherever it hides. "

The man reaches under his cloak and produces a big pouch that he casually drops on the table. As the pouch hits the worn wooden surface, it loosens and drops to its side - revealing what appears to be a big heap of diamonds.
"Now, are you prepared to con an evil man?"
Jun 24, 2022 6:14 pm
I will decide when I hear your plan Mr Harper. Merana spoke stilly and focused on the man’s eyes rather than the distracting diamonds.
