The Meeting at Deepnight

Phlan; the Jewel of Moonsea
A large frontier town on the Moonsea region of north Faerûn with a long and storied history.
Built in 367 DR, Phlan represents the perseverance of humans and their tenacity to bring civilization to the savage wilderness. Since its founding, it has been razed repeatedly by inhuman creatures from the north but continually rose, like the phoenix, from the ashes of its own destruction.

Phlan has grown rich from trade with the untamed wilds to the north of the Moonsea. Those seeking their fortunes flock to Phlan before adventuring out into the enchanted Quivering Forest, the mysterious Sorcerer's Isle and the orc, goblin and dragon-infested Dragonspine Mountains. But even the city itself has its fair share of dangers and secrets...

https://i.imgur.com/4zyF0yU.jpg Madame Freona’s Tea Kettle (and Freona herself) is a mystery to many. In the tumultuous Phlan, this is a place where people can go to have a drink or meal and escape the tensions of the schemers and the power-hungry. With the Tea Kettle’s reputation as a haven, adventures who can be discreet and behave themselves can often find employment there and avoid the hassle associated with other places in Phlan.

So far, that has been true. Madame Freona, a stout and officious halfling who runs the establishment with her five daughters, has proven an excellent hostess. Although you have had to share a common bunkroom with several other adventurers, the evening meal was excellent and the atmosphere pleasant.

You are now in the common room with the rest of Tea Kettle's regulars and semi-regulars. A trio of loud-mouthed dwarves is monopolizing the dart board, occupying the throwing line. The rest are either sitting at a table drinking or standing, mingling with the rest.
OOC:
This is your cue to introduce your characters. Do they know each other? Have you teamed up for some job before? You can discuss it among you either here in ooc or in the ooc thread. Go nuts - but not too nuts. Let's have some fun!
Jun 18, 2022 5:15 pm
Merana had sat sulking for a few minutes. The ridiculous short folk had not let her use her bow on the dart board. It was "cheating", they called it. Merana had tried to argue but there was no convincing them that a bow was obviously the superior way to aim at a target so they had not let her play. It was intolerable.

Still she had posed herself at the table in the hopes one of her room mates might show and offer her some company to go with her drink.
OOC:

I don't know if we know each other but I am happy to play anyway you like. Please join Merana!

With the subtle adjustment of chainmail and wrist resting on the pommel of his sword as he maneuvered through the patrons of the establishment, Kashi offers a slight smile towards the sulking Wood Elf he's come to know as a kind acquaintance. "Ah, already offset by something, hm?" He chuckles in light jest as he takes a seat next to her. He carefully rests his shield against one of the table legs as he moves to rest forearms on the table. "Was the night truly that unkind to you, or have I missed some minor excitement so early on?" Kashi's grey eyes squint closed slightly more with his smiles before he breaks gaze from his companion to look over the crowd from a more stationary position.
Jun 18, 2022 8:29 pm
No minor excitement just yet. Merana said quietly, with a look toward the dwarves. Just a little disagreement about the rules of a very silly game. She drank quietly and deeply from her glass. Looking toward her companion, an elf like she, Merana had hoped for some quiet sympathy. No luck. Kashi had long discovered his ability to say just the simplest thing in a way that would pierce into Merana’s pride. She would compose herself as a proper officer should, with civility and grace, even if she suspected Kashi could see through it.

She turned to look at Kashi, unable to quite match his smile but softening slightly.

What have you been doing? Polishing your armor? Merana could not stand armor herself. Too noisy and she had hated polishing her dress curaiss for parades. Thank goodness she could stick with a more practical mode of dress nowadays. You’ve missed a bit. Merana said idly, nodding to a nonexistent speck of dirt on the paladin’s arm.
Jun 18, 2022 9:23 pm
"Often times those end up in fights. I'm pleased to see that there's no squabble over a tavern game." He turns his head to look back at Merana before leaning away from the table. Kashi very carefully slips his fingers into the pocket of his trousers to pull out a leather cord. From there he gathers his hair up and away from his face to properly secure if via wrapping the leather cord accordingly around his hair.

At the comment to his armor he glances to where she nods to the spot she claims he missed. "Well, I've not had much of a chance to polish it yet. I still need to properly degrease and grease it." He lifts his arm with a slight jingle of his chainmail. "For the most part these rings clean themselves. However, throwing it in a barrel of sand and touching it up with some vinegar and grease should be fine. Maybe I can see about getting that done or doing it at some point." Kashi seemed to just rattle on about his armor clearly passionate about it. Keeping up appearances was vital but only so much could be done while on the road for the most part.
Jun 19, 2022 9:03 am
Sat at a table slightly off to the side of the room, a copper dragonborn drinking from his pint. Next to him, leaning on the chair, is his quarterstaff, while under him is his backpack. He’s wearing slightly scuffed leather armor of which the couter seems missing and under it, a slight shine of his copper-looking scale can be seen.
He’s minding his own business and trying to not be in the way of others because of his body, which is quite cumbersome. Furthermore, he’s mindlessly looking at three loud dwarves playing darts and an elf with a sulk on her face.
OOC:
The couter is the part of the armor that covers the elbow. He does however have leather bracers on.
Jun 19, 2022 11:30 am
The rest of the evening passes by rather uneventful, not taking into account the occasional stray dart landing on a side wall, close to someone's head and the angry shouting that followed.

You are preparing to bunk down for the evening when one of Freona’s daughters peeks into the room. The painfully shy red-headed daughter peeks around the door, catches your eye and hurriedly closes it again. A few seconds pass before she opens the door a crack, and sneaks another look at you.

Jun 19, 2022 8:05 pm
Merana felt the sensation on the back of her neck as a new presence made itself known at the door. Turning to see the girl, Merana’s military past came back to her muscle memory. Instinctively she pulled off her boots and headed to the door. Make sure they are clean for the morning, use some oil on the leather. she spoke sternly reaching into her pocket for a coin for the girl.
Jun 20, 2022 4:58 am
Kashi was straightening out where he'd be settling down for the night when he caught glimpse of the girl the first time. Ah, children. To be so young and curious. He thought she was just peeking in to gaze at all the interesting adventurers bunking in her home. He goes back to straightening out his bedroll when he heard Merana state about something being clean. When he glances over to see her bringing the child her boots he's quick to get up.

"Merana," He snips abruptly before moving to push the boots back into her hands. "If you want a shine go somewhere to have it done or learn to do it yourself. She's a child for crying out loud. A very young one at that." His brows furrow just a little to shame her for trying to make the child tend to her gear.

His expressions softens slightly as he looks towards the redheaded child. "My apologies for my friend here little one." He states before crouching slightly. "It's getting late now, isn't it? Shouldn't you be getting ready to tuck away for some sleep?"

Kashi's soothing words and friendly demeanour help the child overcome her shyness. She steps through the door into your room;

Reece

"Pardon my interruption," says the halfling girl named Reece, one of Freona’s five daughters, just shy of adulthood. "A chap just came into the common room downstairs and asked me to fetch you. Something about some coin needing to change hands for an easy job."

She plays with her curly red hair nervously.
"Uhm yeah; I'll need you, probably you and definitely you to follow me downstairs."
She says pointing at Merana, Kashi and Kepel in succession.

"If you don't mind that is. Please."
She quickly adds and abruptly turns stumbling a bit as she exits the room.
Jun 20, 2022 9:37 am
The girl is nearly an adult Kashi. Maybe you should stay here to rest a little, your poor eyes seem like they could use it. Merana poked as she put her coin back in her pocket, her boots back on her feet, and headed downstairs.

Kepel looks around to check that he was the one the halfling pointed. After having established that it was indeed him, he takes his things with him and reluctantly follows along.
Jun 20, 2022 3:01 pm
"Watch your tongue, soldier. I don't take kind to being insulted." He grumbles at this with a roll of his eyes. Child or adult doesn't matter in the end. She shouldn't be making those kinds of requests to people of this establishment. Kashi lets his mind wander as he collects his items quickly. Boarding with a room of adventurers you never know who might steal away with your items.

He glances over his shoulder when he notes someone else gathering their things. A dragonborn is rare. The copper scales catching his eye and interest. "Hopefully we're not going to be picked on. Don't think I saw many of my people or yours in town." He hefts his bag onto his shoulder and follows alongside the Dragonborn.

Reece
"He looks creepy and mysterious, but ma says he checks out."
She stops at the top of the last part of the staircase;
"Over there, at the table by the far left corner of the hall." she points and turns to rush right back upstairs.

The Harper

As you approach, you see a hooded figure. You can't tell much about the identity of the stranger, but as you get close you can tell it's a male human - some stubble on his chin that isn't obscured by the hood betrays him.

As you arrive at the table, he doesn't take his hood off or raise his head; instead, he only motions for you to sit. As you do so, you notice a brooch - round, gold, in dark blue enamel with a crescent moon and a harp on it.

Kepel sits down as requested by the hooded figure, but doesn't rest his back on the chair, and waits for said figure to start talking.
OOC:
Does Kepel have any knowledge about the brooch and what it means?
Jun 21, 2022 4:31 pm
Kepel keeps staring at the brooch as he tries to figure out if he has already seen it somewhere.

Kashi notes the man and becomes a little more cautious about hoe to proceed. While approaching he takes a moment to observe him a little more closely as he pulls his chair out to take a seat. Grey eyes attempt to focus on this man to gauge the intent of the individual. Halflings are rather friendly and usually very trustworthy in their advice, but Kashi is a little more wary when the intent is not directly clear.
OOC:
Can I make an insight check on The Harper to gather his general demeanor?

Kashi can't tell much about the man across them besides that he looks quite serious. As much as Kepel stares at the brooch, he can't remember seeing this symbol elsewhere. The man keeps his face obscured by his hood and speaks in a low voice, obviously disguising it.
The Harper

"Indeed. I have a job for you of the utmost importance and of a somewhat delicate nature."

He trails off as he sees Kepel staring at his brooch.

"I don't know if you recognize this;" he says pointing at the small round ornament "it's a symbol of the organization that I'm a member of - The Harpers. Put simply, it's an organization that fights evil wherever it hides. "

The man reaches under his cloak and produces a big pouch that he casually drops on the table. As the pouch hits the worn wooden surface, it loosens and drops to its side - revealing what appears to be a big heap of diamonds.
"Now, are you prepared to con an evil man?"
Jun 24, 2022 6:14 pm
I will decide when I hear your plan Mr Harper. Merana spoke stilly and focused on the man’s eyes rather than the distracting diamonds.
Jun 26, 2022 4:14 pm
"The definition of evil varies." Kashi inhales slowly as he glances at the diamonds. Brows slightly furrow as he lets his gaze follow back up to the strange man. "I will also debate if I wish to do your plan after you explain it or not. Being some coy conman to your ploy is already frustrating enough but I will hear you out."

The Harper grins; despite his lowered hood, you can see that.
"You are in a unique position to take on and complete the mission I have for you. We have captured a merchant that was going to illegally purchase a red dragon egg." his voice now barely audible.

I need you to pose as the merchant and her hirelings, go to the buy site, make the transaction, and place a magical device on one of the sellers so that Harpers can track them back to their place of residence.
He points at Merana;
"Fortunately for us, you my lady resemble said merchant enough. The buyer hasn't seen our merchant, which should help you with your cover. We wouldn't send you by yourself, naturally; those two adventurers can pose as your assistant and bodyguard." he chimes, somewhat amused.

"These" he says, gesturing towards the big pouch on the table "are basically worthless. Good enough to pass a cursory inspection, but fake nonetheless."

He looks outside the window;
"Time is of essence, so here's the plan: you go to the meeting place and make the transaction; during the meeting, you need to place this tracking pin on the seller, so we can find their hideout. Killing the seller or incapacitating them is ill-advised, as our main goal is to get to their hideout. I'll make this worth your time; the Harpers are willing to generously compensate you for your effort - three hundred gold pieces divided amongst you - for those of you who choose to take up this mission, of course"

Jun 28, 2022 2:45 pm
Merana blushes slightly, flattered to have been singled out. With my knight in shining armor she gestures to Kashi and a helpful advising companion, I am sure we can assist. Is it far to the meeting place?
Jun 28, 2022 5:27 pm
With Merana seemingly sold without question, her statements did catch Kashi off guard and got a slight snort out of him. "Knight in shining armor?" He thought running a hand over his face. "If my partner heard that they'd have a hell of a field day." After colleting his thoughts, Kashi turns his attention to the man.

Very delicately, he leans forward on the table with elbow resting and hand straight up in a fist. "Well, I do have some concerns even though my companion has seemed to accepted most suddenly. Hopefully you don't mind me running through them." A smile spreads as he lifts up one finger as if to begin counting.

"First off we have your order." He states with a slight tilt of his head. "You are highly trained I assume. You certainly have enough skill to get seemingly real diamonds when they're truly fake." He hums as he uses his finger to gesture to the pin. "Why outsource? If you really are here to stop all evil, then why make us do your work? Are there unknown dangers you aren't telling?"

With a moment of breath Kashi lifts his second finger. "Secondly I find it a bit sloppy at your discussion. If this was really delicate and imperative, I wouldn't be throwing a bag of diamonds on the table. If anyone at all sees us take this it immediately paints a target on our back. Not to mention the fact if anyone is listening in with this being such a public place then it puts you and us at greater risk."

He leans back as he holds up a third finger, letting out a sigh as he continues his point. "My third point here is information. You've told us that it's an illegal trade but what more has this individual done? Yes, it's a red dragon egg. One of the most ferocious types of dragons but in the end the color of the scale does not dictate the personality and morals it will form. If the individual is truly bad I'd like to speak to them or have some information on what they wanted to do with the dragon. The initial sellers I might be a little keen on doing away with only because most times in order to get a dragon egg it comes at the cost of a life."

He holds up his fourth and final finger. "Lastly, I think your formation is a little strange. Maybe they know who to meet but don't know many other details but wouldn't it make more sense for the Dragonborn to be interested with two Elf bodyguards. This one is just more nitpicking than the rest but it was something that stood out."

Kashi held up his four fingers while staring at the individual. "Four reasons. You've given me four reasons to consider not taking this job and not a single one to make me consider joining."

Ok , some premise clarifications : it was about sleep time when the Harper called for you . He's at the far end table , away from the door with his back against the wall ; you're obscuring the view at the table , but I like how you're thinking though😂 .
The Harper , dumbfounded looks at Merana and points at Kashi ; "Is he always like that ?"
The Harper rubs his temple through his hood;
"Ok, you must be new around here. The Tea Kettle is all about being safe and discreet. Yes, I'm part of an organization, but that doesn't mean we travel all together like a band of minstrels nor do we like to draw any unnecessary attention. You must be a rookie. Take a moment to see where we're sitting in the hall and how we are seated; I can spare a moment. The Seller is not known to us, but we assume they're of the smuggling lot; they're not the supplier. The only thing we know about them is their race and sex. If the Seller is expecting a female elf, I don't expect them to sit around and make the exchange with a male Dragonborn "merchant". Our captive was known to us of having shady connections. When I verified it and the opportunity presented itself, I made my move and then came here."

He crosses his arms; "Any further questions? It's not like we're in a hurry and the meeting point is a roughly 20-minute walk from here or anything."

A dwarf, stinking of ale, and clutching a pair of mugs plonks down on the seat next to Merana. He has a beard braided into twin forks and slathered in white foam.

"Eee lads, hang about. You wanted me?" Bloodshot eyes swim in and out of focus "Err lasses? Maybe?"

He gives the patient grin of a drunken idiot, before realising that nobody is speaking.

"Something about... something... help wanted...?" The dwarf swigs on his ale as he collects his thoughts.

Gazza gives the confident nod of somebody who wasn't really listening but will agree anyway.

"Shots afterwards? Yeah? Then a kebab?"

He pats the loop at his belt to check that he hasn't misplaced Betsy the warhammer, then has a fumble under his beard to check he hasn't swapped his religious symbol for a pint. He's reasonably confident that he has both of those and even found a stray peanut hidden in his beard's braids. Profit! Gazza throws the peanut into his gob and stands.

"I'm ready when you are, to do the... the thing... the thing that we're doing. Totally ready."

As instructed, you take off for the northern outskirts of Phlan. You keep a brisk, yet non-alarming pace and soon enough, after twenty or so minutes, you spot the appointed meeting place - an old abandoned barn.

The barn itself is a simple, open structure, 30 feet wide and 80 feet long. A ladder at the end of the barn opposite the open doorway leads to a hay loft 10 feet above the barn floor. The loft is 40 feet long and the entire width of the barn, directly above the end of the barn opposite the door. There are some rusted farm implements leaning against the barn walls and a few burlap sacks in a heap by the wall near the ladder, opposite the main entrance.

Entering the barn, you see a fugly looking guy that matches the description the Harper gave you of the seller, accompanied by two goons, that you assume to be his bodyguards. He turns and smiles at his two goons;
The Seller

"I told you they would come. A dragon egg is much too valuable to pass up."
The fuggler* turns back to you.
"Now, let’s do this quickly. Here is what you asked for."
He holds a very large hide backpack toward you.
"You throw the payment over to me, and we will leave the egg here. We will exit the barn, and then you can leave after five minutes have passed. No fuss, no muss."
He pauses and looks at you more closely. "Hold on. Something is not right here."

*Fuggler: a fugly smuggler.

"I... You... Well..."
You notice that he begins to blush and his goons begin to snicker. The blushing turns into a full on red face, as he says "excuse me for a second" and abruptly turns and kicks the two men behind him in the shins.

"Now, what were we talking about before we were so impolitely disturbed? Right, right. I'm rather busy today, with our fortunate meeting, but perhaps we can arrange a more pleasant meeting sometime? A less crowded one perhaps? I'd be honored to wear this token of yours, in fact I'll wear it now until we meet again."

His sleaziness is palpable, but hey - whatever it takes to get the job done, right?

The Seller takes a step forward and all proud with himself for scoring a deal as well as a date, offers his chest for you to place the tracking pin on. As soon as you do so, he extends his hands to you - one holding the big leather pouch, the other expecting to receive your "diamonds".

"Am really looking forward to be meeting you again. Now, we'll be on our way..."

"Bloody Welcomers! Sorry love, gotta scram."

As he finishes his sentence, the Seller knocks the big pouch down hard; with a big flash and a lesser bang, the "egg" explodes and chaos ensues. The Seller and his goons, knowing the true nature of the "egg" are prepared and exit the barn through a hidden back door as the rest of the barn occupants scramble to regain their sight.

Baddies are up first then it's you; you all roll a DC 13 Constitution check, to see if you recover from the flash bang this round. Nifty floating battle map at the bottom.
Being caught completely off guard, the Thug and his Bandits are blinded for this round.

it can happen if the site's lagging and you press/click post again. Sadly for you, the etiquette I was taught dictates that the first post is the one that counts.
Everyone but Gazza - who was daydreaming of ale and kebabs, is stumbling around trying to regain their sight. The Welcomers' formation is no more and they're scattered around.
OOC:
Go Gazza go! I assume you know this, but you roll your attacks with advantage.

edit: I'll be updating the floatbox, let me know how that's working out.

Gazza moves to AE7. He's using his war priest feature to make an attack on each of the foes.
Gazza sniffs, lowers his head, and charges. All while singing a hymn to Haela Brightaxe.

He feels steel meet meat and growls an "Amen!"

Gazza lands a staggering blow at the thug and a lesser - yet effective smack on the bandit.

The egg acted as a flash bang, so its effects aren't permanent. Baddies are up. Bandit no.2 moves to AC10 and shoots an arrow with great gusto at Merana with his light crossbow. Bandit no.1 rapidly unsheathes his scimitar and slashes at Gazza. Gazza is also at the receiving end of two mace attacks from the Thug.
OOC:
Thug's attacks are at advantage due to Pack Tactics. Blame yourself Adam.
The arrow zooms past Merana's head and hits a nearby post; the initial attack from the bandit scrapes Gazza's armor and the Thug's mace misses them by an inch; the follow up mace swing smashes Gazza's shoulder though.

Merana's arrow left her bow so fast, that the Bandit didn't even get the chance to react.
"Gurglblgl!..."
As the arrow pierced the Bandit's throat, he begun chocking in his own blood, gurgling incoherently.

Gazza grunts as the mace splinters bone. Oh well, he has plenty more where that came from, and it wouldn't Haela Brightaxe to stop now.

He continues to swing away, bathed in the righteous glow of bloodlust.

Gazza's warhammer meets Thug's face. Thug's face not so pleased with making said acquaintance.

Blood and a sole tooth are spewed at Gazza's direction, making him lose his second target out of excitement.

As Gazza's attention shifts to the bandit adjacent to him, the Thug decides it would be a good time to disengage and back away towards the door.

The two bandits, watching their Thug in charge back away turn and attack Gazza and Merana; they preferred to clash with these adventurers than meet the Thug's mace up in person.

Rolls

Bandit2: Scimitar - To hit Merana - 4dmg - (1d20+3)

Gazza chuckles at the hopeless attempts.

"Looks like these lads need a lesson in murder."

He shouts behind to Merana as he cues up Betsy the warhammer.

"Shall we show them how it's done?"
Jul 29, 2022 2:38 pm

Merana's attempt to counter attack and run the bandit through with her sword, while executed gracefully didn't account for the bandit's swinging momentum and met the empty space at the bandit's left side.

Gazza though went all out; an overly brutal smash of his warhammer at the side of the bandit's head did the trick. Just to make sure though, he brought his warhammer down at the already dropping dead bandit's head. After all, why not? Better be safe than sorry.

Seeing one of his goons being smashed to a bloody pulp and the other bleeding profusely with an arrow sticking out of his neck, the Thug decides to jump back into the fight. It wasn't the loss of his underling as much as the fact that he expected them to be cleaning their bloodied weapons and laughing over the loot that got the best of him.

He moved back near the side wall and as his lackey fell, he fired his crossbow at Gazza.

Seeing that he wasn't abandoned after all, the bandit facing Merana swings at her with his scimitar - now sporting a bloody creepy smile.

Rolls

Bandit2: Scimitar - To hit Merana - 4dmg - (1d20+3)

With a precise and well calculated strike, the second bandit falls by Merana's sword.

Seeing his last comrade fall, the Thug decided that this was a good time to haul ass.
"I'll get you back for this! The Welcomers don't forget nor they forgive"
He yells and turns around to flee the barn.

Gazza points his warhammer at the fleeing Thug. It glows with the divine red light of war.

He allows the ruddy glow to build before releasing it with a blood-curdling battle cry.

The bolt flies over the ducking thug's shoulder.

"COWARD!" yells the dwarf, crazed with a holy beserker's blood-lust.
