Now that has had the chance to relax and come back to his normal self, he tries his best to conjure up some fancy sounding words to appease the mayor... For now. He smiles as he looks at the hosts "Thank you for inviting us, Mayor. I am Albert, this is my good friend Roald." He says, making sure to greet the women as well. "You're looking marvelous, ma'am. I'm sorry about our brushed off clothing, but the tailor was unavailable. And this was the best we could do on short notice.

"Oh yes. We have been adventuring for a while now, haven't we Roald? In fact we've recently battled with a centipede the size of a large horse and even the undead!" He adds some adventurer talk and makes grand gestures with his hands to show the size of the centipede, to not disappoint the children. "May Raynor send them all back to the darkness that they came from!"

"But you see, before all that, I used to be a the owner of a bar. And as any bar or inkeep will be able to tell you, settling arguments is an intrinsic part of the job! Not a day went by that I didn't have to keep 2 or more boozers from cutting each other up." Albert shoves a few spoonfulls of stew in his mouth then uses the knife to mimic his patrons stabbing each other. "Ah, good times. By the way, this stew is delicious!"

"Anyway, we'd be happy to see about solving this matter diplomatically or otherwise." He says without knowing what the 'otherwise' would entail. "I hope we can count on your hospitality while we take care of this problem."

The casual mention of 'tailor-unavailability' seems to confirm your wealth and access to gold. Those with wealth are never considered 'dirty', 'untidy', or 'uncouth', but are instead viewed as 'eccentric', which fits with giving up ownership of a bar to go adventuring. Such people can not be faulted for bringing in a little dirt.

At the talk of giant centipedes and undead the kids eyes are wide, but with enthusiasm rather than fear. The mayor seems to dismiss this talk as harmless exaggeration and make-believe. The mention of Raynor has no impact on the mayor, but his kids share a look, like you just confirmed something important to them.

Compliments about the food are met with wordless demurring, but the mayor pays these no mind, and talks over his wife's attempts at explanation.

Your 'promise to solve' receives a nod, though you talk of ongoing hospitality seems to have come as a surprise. "Of course." The mayor rallies. "The inn is at your disposal. And, once you have news to report we can sit down again."

Roald hasn't said a lot, the stew is truly delicious and he finishes his plate just as Albert mentions the centipede.
'' Oh yes, that creature. It was gigantic, at one point I was sitting on top of it, jamming my blade in between two segments. There was filthy goo everywhere. And then there were these living skeletons and when they touch you, you'd feel your very soul being sucked out of your body.''

''Mam, this is the best meal I've had in weeks! I don't mean to be impolite but if there is a little bit left, you would make me even happier ''

A big smile grows on Roald's face as he gets a refill.

'' About these two families... What can we expect in terms of stubbornness, temper and violence? How big are the families? Can you maybe tell us something about the two leaders?''

At the mention of riding the horse-sized centipede, and then the undead touch, the kid's and their mom's eyes go even wider, their mouths adding an extra O to the pattern.

If you were paying close attention you may hear some muttered complaints from the servant after refilling your bowl, but the mayor does not appear to notice or care if his servant goes hungry.

"Hard to tell for sure." He answers as best he can. "The families themselves are at least a few dozen each? Though I can't say how many are around right now.

"They have many servants, but I don't know about their actual loyalty. Most are co-opted from the various steadings that were overtaken.

"As to the boys in charge, I can not speak. I knew both their fathers --to my detriment-- and this latest batch seem to be cut from the ragged edge of the same cloth. Things are worse than before, what with them both coming into power, after the untimely deaths of both their fathers, at roughly the same time, the lack of steadying influence may have contributed. Who can say."

"So there's a lot of history there, then. I see." Albert says. "Do you think we should start with the Childeberts or the Chlodomers, mayor? Who do you believe is more suitable for compromise? He finish the bowl of stew, happy to have had the chance to eat such a great meal, and uses some bread to clean out the rest of the bowl.

"Delicious!" He proclaims when done. "Surely the gods have blessed this cook."

Mrs. mayor blushes at your compliment, but does not say anything.

"Arrogant blowhards the both of them." The mayor responds. "I would not even know how to tell them apart, neither by appearance nor my personality, though they will be quick to tell you their lineage when you meet them." He shrugs, not being able to provide guidance about who to start with.

After some further discussion you learn that neither of their territories extend out to the temple, and that it is pretty much equally distant from both --sorta in line with the disputed border-- but that the unmaintained logging track you followed to here passed through one of their lands.
OOC:
Do you want to start by visiting the one whose land you walked on, or the other?
Either way: Do you start with the Childeberts or the Chlodomers?

"Very well, Mayor." Albert says. "We will meet with these menaces and see how to resolve the issue in your best interest." he gets up and bows respectfully. "For now though we need to go and check on our wounded comrades. Thank you again for this fine meal and hospitality."

When all goodbye's have been said, Albert heads back to the medical hut to see how Asha is doing.

Night has almost fallen by the time you are done with dinner, the evening light is fading fast as you arrive back at the healer's.

At you knock you hear slow, uneven footfalls from inside, and the captain answers the door. "Ah, it's you." She says, and you can see she has her sword in hand behind the door. "I must admit, I find myself unusually fearful of the coming dark, and every strange sound makes me jump." She is talking quietly, and you can see that the house is in darkness except for the candle she has kept burning in the otherwise-empty front room.
OOC:
If either of you are also feeling nervous about the dark, or were being particularly attentive to your surroundings between the mayor's and here, maybe make a 'perception' roll.

"That was a fine meal, there, wasn't it, Roald?" Albert smiles as they walk back in the direction of the healer together. The "streets" are getting dark and gloomy. "You think they really needed this palisade so badly?" he mentions while looking around. Nothing seems to be particularly dangerous right now. He peers at one of the darker spaces between 2 homes where one might expect troubles in the city.

"hmm... what? ... Oh yeah, fine." Roald is a bit distracted. Is that something moving in the shadows under that porch? Probably just a cat.
There is a strange feeling that somebody is following them, he suddenly stops and pretends something is wrong with his boot, inconspicuously looking over his shoulder.
" I have a strange feeling in this place Albert, it is just too quiet"

There has been a lot of interested in the newly-arrived adventurers --everyone wanted to have words with you as you left the packed inn to go to the mayor-- and some heads popped out of doors or windows to watch you as you make you way to the healer...

But someone is definitely following you, at a distance. When Roald stops and looks around, you can both spot a hulking figure darting away down an ally. From Roald's low position he can see the silhouette appears armed and armoured. It would be unusual to be wearing such an outfit in one's own village, but, by the time you make it to the healer, there is no sign of whoever was following you.

The captain's words breed paranoia. Maybe it is just that that makes the figure seem threatening? If it meant you harm, there were opportunities --before your eyes adjusted to the outside dark-- for it to waylay you, after all.

What do you do?
Aug 20, 2022 9:29 pm
"That is indeed troubling..." Albert agrees.
"It would have to be someone from the village. If not, that would mean the palisade isn't working as intended. But why would they be wearing armor?"

He turns to Roald "What do you make of this?"
Aug 21, 2022 12:53 am
" The only thing I can think of, is someone not wanting us to settle the dispute, or even trying to. Who profits from the feud between the families? An arms dealer maybe"

"Are you alright here captain? We should get to the inn and get some sleep, but if you want, we can spend the night here."

Roald takes a peek through the window, but the light of the candle has ruined his night vision.

" We'll have to be careful Albert, i guess if someone wanted to harm us, they would have already tried. But you never know..."
Aug 21, 2022 1:10 am
"Asha woke for a bit and asked for food, which the healer says is good news. But they are both sleeping now." The captain whispers quietly, so as not to disturb them.

"There are only two beds." She points out. "And both are already taken. So I am 'sleeping' in the chair." She motions to an very uncomfortable looking wooden chair. "But a combination of that, plus nerves and nightmares, means I will probably 'stand guard', and then catch a few winks tomorrow once the healer vacates her bed."

The talk of someone threatening you is making the captain even more nervous, meaning she is now even less likely to sleep tonight. She is curious about the task the mayor set you, but has no significant advice to add (if you give her the details you have).

"Surely you will be safe at the inn?" She speculates. "With other people around no one would try anything." You probably suspect she is right, and that the inn will also still be more crowded than normal due to the local interest in your presence.

What do you do?
Aug 22, 2022 2:30 am
"Let's head back, Albert. We'll return in the morning and can discuss this. Or, if you want, captain, I can stay here with Asha while you get some rest in our room at the inn."
Roald, hesitates for a moment.
"Say, captain,... would you do us the pleasure of telling us your name? The longer we are together, the more awkward it feels to keep calling you captain. In my opinion we've become more than guards of the caravan."

Roald watches her face as good as he can in the dim light, ready to say something like: nevermind, I shouldn't have asked at the first sign of disgruntlement on her behalf.

As they walk back to the inn, Roald is watchful and keeps one hand on the hilt of his sword.
OOC:
If the captain accepts the offer, Roald will stay at the healer's.

- Roald -

"That's very generous." The captain says in reply to your offer to stay here. "But not very practical, what with my hurt leg and all. Anyway, I can sleep tomorrow, you have work to do." She also needs to be here so the healer can see to her injuries anyway.

"My friends --and I count you among them-- call me 'Bimi'." She admits, smiling shyly --and very prettily. "But almost everyone calls me 'captain'." Which says something about the number of friends she has.

Watching closely as you are, you can see something is bothering her at the mention of the caravan and her duties. It has only been a few days, but you all did run off and abandon them right after they were ambushed by bandits, which is not very professional. She can't travel just yet, but you get the impression she is thinking about getting back there.
Aug 22, 2022 7:52 am
"Very well. Let's get some rest, Roald, and see what the morning brings." Albert confirms. He smiles at the mention of 'friends' when he hears the captain's name for the first time. "Bimi..." It's not a call of her attention, but he's pondering the name. "If I'm not mistaken, that was the name of one of the champions of Goddess Larinia." He chuckles. "What an interesting coincidence."

He picks up his things to head to the inn. "I'm sure you'll be back in fighting form soon, Bimi." After a quick check that Asha is still sleeping soundly, he leaves the healer's hut with Roald.
Aug 22, 2022 8:36 am
"Larinia..." The captain says thoughtfully. "Hmm... I have a vague memory of my aunt speaking about her, a long time ago." She has a similar expression on her face as when you found her studying the sign or the wolf and horn in the temple that morning.

"Well, safe travels, and sleep well, my friends." She says, shaking off the pensive mood as best she can.
As you approach the door of the inn, a hulking figure clad all in armour steps out from the shadows and raises a gauntletted hand to stop you. "Erm? Excuse me?" He says in a stammering voice.

What do you do?
Aug 22, 2022 6:01 pm
Albert is startled and acts on reflexes. He sees the armor they were talking about earlier, and before realizing, the broom he's using as a walking stick swings out to try and sweep the threat's feet out from under him.
OOC:
Do I roll for this?
Aug 22, 2022 6:51 pm

Your staff clangs into the armoured shins. Too late figure tries to jump backwards, flails his arms and topple over into the vegetable patch.

"Don't hit me." He pleads pathetically --and, you suspect, habitually.
